I get beautiful blue from my hydrangeas by saving all my coffee grounds and left over coffee and spreading it on the base throughout the year. It really helps increase the acidity of the soil.
I use a soil acidifier, but given both our water and natural soil is pretty alkaline, it's difficult to adjust the soil PH downward. I don't personally drink coffee, but I have heard of using coffee grounds. The studies are too mixed and there are reports it can be damaging to the plant itself and the soil biolife from leftover caffeine or other additives. Here's one study: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1618866716300103
Hi Matthew! You have such beautiful gardens! All of the different hydrangeas and day lilies are gorgeous. I love the ajuga you have. I have the darker one in two different planters, but want to get the ajuga burgundy glow like you have. I love the colors. I'm looking forward to the tour when more flowers are in bloom. Thank you so much for sharing!
I ordered my Vego raised bed. By getting the gray which is $15 cheaper than the other colors and going thru you and getting 5% off it was $175.71. I can't wait to get it. I have been on the fence about buying a raised bed but this was such a good deal and right now it is free shipping.
I clicked on your vid in my feed because it said R & R Parody…I was curious. I’m so glad I did! It’s good to see gardens in my area. And we are getting the rain here😝I’m over it but am grateful not to be dragging around hoses. It seems the perennials love it but the annuals look to be drowning. I might pop over to Berns to see what’s left in the annual sections. Their prices are higher but there’s a sale! Enjoy your Saturday.
By the time we make it to clearance sales there are no hydrangeas in big box stores in Charleston area, South Carolina. A few Home Depots have limelight standard that they refuse to put any discount on even though we are almost in August. That is the extent of selection of hydrangeas around me.
Yep, hello from a Roots and Refuge fan. Happy to be here. Had no idea there were so many hydrangea types. Little wonder bc I didn't like them before this year. Have an awesome day, dear one 😊
Great video. If I may, I would like to make a suggestion: I think the music in your videos is a little bit too loud. lowering the volume of the music would help to hear better all the very interesting informations you share with us about your gorgeous garden. Keep up the good work😊
Thanks! The volume of the background is very different depending on the device you’re listening on and since this is a new track I’ve never used before it can be difficult to determine. I usually listen to it back on two different audio devices before finalizing. It was turned down to 10%. Sorry!
Hello I just came across your channel and found out you are a fellow Ohioan. I'm in Cincinnati and I love your garden. I'm a big Hydrangea lover. I need 11 more Bobo's to complete my flower bed so I may have to go to Home Depot to see if I can find some.
I’ve never noticed Bobo at Home Depot. Natorp’s is probably your best bet for a better price than other garden centers - but it will still be expensive.
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden That's where I buy majority of my flowers. I love that nursery. You never find a rack of dead flowers there. I'll give myself 3 years to buy 11.
I love the combination of your hydrangeas with the peach daylilies. I have bought daylilies that were supposed to be pink but ran peach which I think is hard to integrate with red pinks and blue pinks. Perhaps if I put white or ivory or greenish white hydrangeas next to them it will work. It works for you certainly. Maybe also some dark purple as in petunias. I don't have the amount of garden space you do........Your garden is simply lovely and breathtaking. I garden in zone 6 in central Ill. Just gotta love that clay.😰 As your video progressed I saw a mix of warm and cool flowers and liked it. I wonder what I need to switch up?
Ugh, it has been the same here in my area in Texas! My garden (start of it ) has loved it, however, the weeds have too! I love your garden and have learned a lot that I can apply to my garden. I hope they would be larger nest yea. I’ve invested in david Austin roses as well as other plants and some stop and irrigation system. Thank you .
Same with the rain here in Chicago. I bought quite a bit of new perennials and annuals - rarer varieties - that were planted shortly before our crazy rains. They were very expensive and I lost them all....all rotted! 😔. And I’m not a new gardener....I’m a licensed nursery.
That’s terrible! It’s certainly been a challenging year for everyone weather wise. My location specifically typically has a drought this time of year or very little rain. This is certainly an off year.
I like clearance also. But for some reason, Home Depot never maks their plants down here. But Lowes does and occasionally I kind fnd a few things there. Got w bunch a Guara 2 diff kinds in last month. I has been raining everyday in SC also, and you want humidity, geez, we have it. So taking advantage of the rain, just starting some hydrangeas from cuttings.
Your garden is just beautiful. The gatsby oakleaf looks like it's going into an early Fall mode. One of my oakleaf's is doing the same thing. Looks gorgeous!
My incrediballs are drooping this year. They are 3 years old too, and I think the blooms are too big and heavy. Odd because we’ve been in a drought, so they aren’t heavy from rain. And I’ve been watering well, so they aren’t too dry. 🤔
Are they actually Incrediballs or the older Annabelles? Mine were also from a 3 gallon container originally so that may make a difference if you started them smaller. Otherwise maybe they’ll be better next year. Mine are sturdier this year than last.
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden they are definitely PW incrediballs. I think you’re right, they need another year to strengthen. I believe I got them in 1 gal pots.
I remarked to my partner last night that it feels like spring in July this year. I’m in between Cincinnati and Dayton and we got slammed with storms yesterday. Have you ever tried growing rhododendrons? There was one planted here when we moved in 3 years ago and it hasn’t put on much growth or bloomed. I think it might be getting too much sun so I’m considering moving it to a different spot, but I also don’t recall seeing many of them around. Just curious if you’ve ever had success with them or know of anyone who has? That Lamium is gorgeous!
I have tried a rhododendron. It was planted where the Blue Chiffon Rose of Sharon standard is now, so that gives you an indication of how it did. 😂 They like acidic soil and that’s just not something I can provide. Both our water and soil is so alkaline. I would like to try the Proven Winners Dandy Man Color Wheel Rhododendron though. It looks amazing.
Love my Annabelle Hydrangeas ❤ Did you know you can dry them after they turn green cut them then strip all the leaves then straight into a vase. They will dry perfectly standing up. ❤ I love your gardens!
I'm very interested in the Pamela Crawford system of installing a pole in the ground, with a basket at the top for planting flowers. However, the products don't seem to be available. I was wondering if any fellow gardeners have another resource for purchasing this type of a system? Thanks for any help you can provide!!
It looks like Garden Artisans may have some available. You may have to pay for shipping though through them. gardenartisans.com/products/planters/border-column-with-metal-post/?_vsrefdom=adwords&gclid=CjwKCAjwos-HBhB3EiwAe4xM99376iMNJzYuhGV_-aepErqufqYlXKwcfMZs_8f4JVDx6B0t3L9NOxoCc6sQAvD_BwE
I have to be very conscious about using water, because I cannot afford a high water bill. Is the drip system on your local utility line, or is it somehow hooked into the rain gutters? Love your channel. Thanks.
The drip is connected directly to the hose bibb. There is probably some ingenious method where you could use a pump and rain barrel. You would need a prefilter on the water though to keep the drip emitters from becoming clogged from roofing materials and other debris.
What happened wit the new variety of proven winners hydrangea that you planted in a planter. You were testing it out for zone hardiness? It was named something like fairytale...or something like that.?
I’m interested in something to cover the ground so I won’t need to mulch as much, so it’s exactly what I was looking for. I already have to spread way too much mulch! Certainly not for everyone though.
I just like and love your garden
Well maintained
Clean and leafy
I absolutely love your garden. I’ve been expanding my flower beds each year while experimenting with so many different plants. It has been a blast.
It brings so much joy!
Such a gorgeous garden Matthew. Just beautiful! Love your tours. You are very good at your descriptions of all the plant material. Keep on keeping on!
Everything looks absolutely stunning Mathew 💕
Thank you Mat....be bless 🙏
I saw you on Roots and Refuge and was stoked to see you're from Ohio 🌻💗🌻 I live near Dayton 😊 LOVE LOVE LOVE your gardens 😍

First garden tour. Your garden is beautiful and seems to be filled with most of my favorite flowers. Everything is growing so well and abundantly.

Love seeing all the hydrangeas. I live in the mountains and have tons of deer so only have a few in pots. Your garden is beautiful
I am so glad I don’t have a deer problem. I think it’s because we live so close to the road. My garden would be a buffet!

Haha! It’s easy to get in trouble that way. 😂

My Home Depot has shrubs half off EXCEPT for hydrangeas and crape myrtles. I was looking for a dwarf yew but there weren’t any
Booooo! Maybe you can sweet talk them into letting you have some of the hydrangeas at that price? Hehe
