Creating New Flower Beds: Step 2 (The Natural Edge)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Hi, everyone! Today is all about the natural edge. After my discussion of why I don't like metal edging in my garden (see • Metal Edging is the WO... ), I thought it was time to show you how I create the edges for my new flower beds. In my opinion, they're easier to maintain with regular grooming with a weed eater and basically FREE, which is the best price, right?

Thank you for the clear explanation about edging. You have giv3n me confidence to do my own!
I am a retired teacher and teacher supervisor. So I think I am qualified to say that you are an excellent teacher! You are clear and precise, which ensures that your students - viewers like me - are not confused at all at the end of your lesson. I am deeply appreciative of your exquisite teaching. Also, what is the variety of the hydrangea in the foreground while you were digging? That is the one I saw at the park that I want in my yard. Esther
Thanks so much! That is a simple Limelight. It has only been planted since March/April 2020 so it’s still smaller.
That hydrangea looks amazing!!
Im in northern Ohio, and looking forward to spring and new garden beds! This video was excellent in explaining how to edge! Looking forward to more videos in 2023! - Thank you!
Thank you for showing how to edge the garden. We make some new beds using the no dig, cardboard method, but the edges are awful! As soon as our weather could off a bit I will be doing this!
As soon as our weather cools off...
Thanks for being a light!!
You always explain things so very well , thank you 💚👨🌾💚
Yes it’s so hot and we get very tired!! Hurray for you to keep going!!
Highly recommend this method!!! Ever since I discovered no-dig I’ve been a fan. I normally make my new beds in fall anyhow so that takes care of the time they need to break down. This year I added another step in there. Under the mulch I put shredded leaves (grass clips would be great in spring and summer) to break down into compost. I will see if I like this come spring.
New to your channel just subscribed. Looking forward to the work you’re doing making flower beds. Thanks
Good morning🌞🌞🌞❤🙏Jess has been talking about putting Limelights in front of her home. I also suggested Firelights and Bobo for in front of the windows ( she didnt want them covered by scrubs). It will be fun to watch what you too decide on.👍👍
Oh boy…. You’re my tribe! I use the paper/cardboard method too and it’s always worked well for me. (Over removing ALL that sod) loving the videos and just subscribed!
Removing sod is THE WORST!!
I need more of these videos!! Love it! Great tips I will certainly be using
Nice job 👍.. I’m learning a whole lot thank you so much..
Love that clean edge and that gradual curve! I’m really becoming disenchanted with grass.
We follow R&R and are fellow central Arkansans (like Jess and Miah are/were). Love your flowers, and these videos about establishing beds. I have a gorgeous rock flower bed I built myself but it’s a glorified weed bed every year. This edging is a game changer! Can’t wait to keep seeing your progress and learning. Oh, and we discovered you from your R&R parody videos, HILARIOUS! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and honest opinions 💁🏻♀️
Your yard is going to look so good! I love clean lines.
You are pretty phenomenal in the yard!! Looks great and very good info!!👍
I love to see the process of anything related to gardening! love your videos.
Thanks for showing us your process- that’s exactly what I needed. I am making big changes in my garden this fall and this will help me create my new beds. 👍🏻😁
Looks great Matthew and I love this method I’ve used it myself. I Garden in Urbana Ohio I’m your neighbor.
Just ordered an edger can’t wait for cooler weather- terrible hot and dry here in deep east Texas - Im a new subscriber and totally love me some cardboard - been using it for several years - keep up the good work see you in the next step of this transformation- also big fan of PW plants-
Thank you, THANK YOU!! I love this and am going to follow this method for the beds I have planned! Looks great!!
I love a natural edge and flow in a flower bed. I can't wait to see what you having coming to plant in the new space.
I just found your channel. I look forward to seeing your garden journey...
Very helpful!
Rental stores usually have cardboard also appliance stores also have cardboard, along with the local grocery stores. May try angling your edger at a 45* to trim up the rounded side left by the shovel. It is going to look AWESOME!
What is that on your cap?
Great tips! Looking forward to watching the rest of the process. 🙂
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I am primarily a raised bed vegetable and fruit gardener. However this fall I will be venturing into adding in ground flower beds with planting a huge bulb order I have coming. This video has given me wonderful methods for achieving the look I want.
Thanks I was just bout to purchase that very edging but my yard is St Augustine-
Great video. Really love watching this process and seeing your new beds come together. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful job edging.
Thank you so much for this! You made this seem so simple. I’ll be doing the same method very soon. It seems way less daunting this way.
Lots of work it will be so nice! I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets a bit tired this time of year calling for heat index of 101-104 not fun.
I love that line! I would like to try that but I worry about maintenance.
THANKS!!!!
Looks great!
Beautiful
Thank you for sharing ❤️
Thanks! I definitely enjoyed. I used the cardboard method with my last flower bed, and will stick with that method. I am always ordering cat food and dogfood online so usually keep a supply of cardboard. I was going to extend my bed was was not sure how to do the curves. It takes a lot of mulch. Since Lowes delivered my lawnmower around when I built the last bed, I had them deliver a pallet of Evergreen compost also. It took every bit plus more! So may have them deliver two next time. Here in SC with the 95 degree heat and high humidity, this will definitely be a fall project.
Very informative! Thanks!
Amazing job 😀
Edging looks perfect! I think my mistake is mounding my bed too high. Looking forward to the next video!
I would love to be your neighbor. You do all the hard work and expense and I'd reap the beauty of your garden! 😃😆
Thank you for sharing this method with everyone. I looked forever for a video to help me with this exact thing a few years ago. Sorta came up with a very similar method on what I read and saw from others. Excellent video information
I’m tired also this time of the season. It’s just exhausting with the heat & watching things struggle. Excited to see what you do this month.
Ps can you speak about the GG Arbs…how they’re doing.
lol other than when I dig my Texas lawn I only stumble on rocks 😂
Usually the far end corner of the property is where all the construction debris gets dumped…. in my old garden - same spot as yours…dug up chunks of concrete and gooey
‘cement soil’…yuck….eager to see how everything turns out🙂
I really enjoyed watching how to do this.. Is there a follow up video showing you laying the mulch and where you lay it up to at all? Is it up to the trench? I take it I wouldn't fill the trench? Thanks for sharing
Nice!!!
Go to any recycling center they will give you all you need.
Hi Matthew! I love the way your natural edge turned out. I've tried to picture it when you talked about it. It was nice of you to show the actual way to do it, and the way you explain everything is awesome! You explain it in such a way that anyone should be able to do it. Unfortunately our back area is gravel, but weeds and grass come up and needs to be pulled, or dug up, which is hard for me because I have arthritis in my hands. Can the cardboard method be done without mulch and water? Probably a silly question, but thought I'd ask as my only other alternative is using a ground sterilizer on it. You're such a tease! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have coming and where you put/plant it. ;-) Thank you so much for sharing! BTW, loved seeing one of your pups out with you, so cute!
Thanks so much! The cardboard will eventually break down, but you can put soil or compost over it as well instead of just mulch. There’s a new organic weed control called Dead Weed Brew by Bonide that works pretty well if you mix it at the highest rate, if you want something organic to spray.
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden Thank you Matthew! I'll see if I can find the Dead Weed Brew. Hope you're having a great day!
Curious to know why you didn’t use the half-moon edge to made the 45 degree cut.
Thank you for the Contractor Paper tip. Didn’t know that. I’m making a bed with retaining wall bricks either 3 or 4 bricks deep. I plan on putting bags of soil in to create a raised bed. Do I need to put a mulch or compost over the cardboard/paper layer? Area is where I had a large Azalea removed.
You can put soil directly over the cardboard instead. It may be deep enough that you don't need to put anything down before the soil is placed on top, but it doesn't hurt to add cardboard or newspaper first before the soil.
So no need to clear the grass from the bed? I have Bermuda and I always have problems with it growing in the bed, even with cardboard
I've been watching videos on creating natural or live edges, and I've been waiting for someone to address the possibility of rain washing the mulch into your trench. Is this not an issue?
Looks great! What do you do with the grass that you took out? It’s so heavy and seems such a waste to throw away although I do throw mine away sometimes. I also have edged my garden and dug a deep trench that I can then place the grass upside down and cover it with many inches of soil and then mulch. Crossing my fingers that I don’t regret it. Seems like a built in compost in theory
I, like most of us, have a junk dirt pile. Haha. I throw them there upside down to “compost” as well.
Great job on the Edging. I was wondering if you have clay soil how do you amend the soil for plants with this method?
I discuss this a bit in my next video that airs on Thursday. The mulch will breach down over time and amend the bed. I don't fully amend any beds unless I notice a severe problem that could present issues. I also try to plant smaller plants to begin with, so they can grow into and acclimate to the clay soil easier that way.
Is any of the area that will be behind the fence part of your property?
I used contractor's paper a few years ago and it didn't break down well for me. I tried contacting the company to make sure there weren't any additives that might be concerning but they did not give me a response. Have you had good luck with it before?
This is my first time using it. I have used only cardboard in the past, but I ran out and have heard success with the painters paper.
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden Thanks for replying. I'm working on building up my cardboard supply at the moment. Please let us know what you think of it in the future, maybe I purchased the wrong product.
Great demonistration!
"Dispose rather easily." How? That's a lot of weight, and a lot of bulk. For most homeowners, that's not going to work with their standard garbage collection.
Hmm. Well good thing I didn’t mention to throw it away in your garbage bin.
Were not supposed to use bird feeders!! If you could take them down till next yr. I just lay bird seed down onmy ledge they come still. Im an animal lovee and it breaks my heart thst thesebirds are going thru there this we are there advocates to
They’ve not been fed all year. You’re not supposed to be feeding them at all this year - whether by bird feeders or otherwise.
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden I have 6 blue bird familys that iv been feeding for 2 yrs and they sure do let me know when im late putting there undalted shelled peanuts. My camera catches them and were good no signs of deseas on thrm. I do undalted shelled peanuts and its the same birds lol, they called dibs lol. You can hear there babies waking up lol and mamma will tap on my back door its cute. And i never touch there food ever to scared to. So i hope the peanuts are ok.
Yes i was laying bird seed until i heard they didnt know if it was the seed. Such crap for them i pray it all stops soon. I literaly hate to see animals suffer.❤
