    Thank You SO much for this video and the links you've provided for reliable products! I just installed my first section of drip irrigation today and it was a success thanks to you. So happy I found your video, pretty confident it saved me from purchasing inferior products and hours of frustration.

    Oh my word. This video is absolutely loaded with gold. Thank you so much for this comprehensive guide on irrigation. After moving to the south, I had been hand watering each evening and as the heat has started getting more intense, also hand watering in the morning and on my lunch break. I had no idea where to start with drip and only found the overpriced packages in the big home hardware stores. I'm container planting currently, so I just purchased a timer and a sprinkler head and grouped my plants in the same area and this has eased my time up and helped the wilting situation. However, I'll be preparing for drip when I finally get my home purchased though and I cannot thank you enough for all of this information. You're a legend.

    This was the best, most complete and informative video on drip irrigation I have seen. Even the channel I watch done by a professional landscaper/nurseryman didn't explain half as we!!. Thank you very much! I'm lucky enough to live in the country with my own well that's over a hundred feet deep so only cost is the electric to run the pump. However, I'm hoping to downsize within a year and water availability and cost is going to be a high priority for my new home! 👍👍👍😀💖

    What a great resource! I have the behyve timer on my raised beds, but the drip 'tape' I'm using has started just pouring water at the female connection. Time for 'real drip' and to try again to research what I just couldn't find and understand last spring.
    THANK YOU for making this video- now I know exactly what is needed and how to go about it. I've popped in occasionally as you've come up in suggested videos (probably from all the roots and refuge content I follow! HA!) but now you have a subscriber in your own right.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  3 роки тому +1

      I'm glad it was helpful! I have an enormous amount of bed space so I do think it would be cheaper than hand watering for anyone because you can more easily gage how much water you are using than spraying it all over the ground. In my climate watering isn't necessary every day after shrubs/perennials are established and I'm finding myself watering certain areas less now (except for annuals) than I did when they were initially planted. With all the rain we've had (which has been unusual), I've actually watered very little this year at all.

    • @chrisolson1755
      @chrisolson1755 3 роки тому

      The Southerner's Northern Garden you are lucky because here in Wisconsin this year, the rain just doesn’t come and some plants suffer so I find myself watering everyday. I guess I’m just hearing things like 2 gal per hour and my brain goes “ oh wow the water on for a whole hour!” Without understanding that it’s actually not a whole hour of water from a hose but it is controlled 🤣. Next year in the spring I’m going to start this because it’s getting to be a lot to hand water. Thank you so much for your time and for responding so quickly. Looking forward to your next tour ( which I hope will be soon). Have a blessed day 🌷

    This is so helpful. I’m struggling with order of items on my line. I have a Y splitter, hose 1 side and I’m trying to setup drip order for other.
    Does the back flow device go before or after timer?
    I’ve watch a couple of these drip videos, but always farmers with commercial setups, or people living in South or out west. I live in lower Mich and we get real snow. can you leave the drip hose outside all winter? Or do you pick them up? I’m worried about 1/4” tubes for containers & window boxes

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  3 роки тому +3

      The timer will go on the hose bibb first. You can certainly leave the drip out year round! Because the tubes are all flexible plastic and because they’re designed to emit all the water that enters them (for the most part) you don’t have to worry about them freezing/busting.

    Hi there, thanks for the very beautiful informative video. I’m trying to plug a drip tube onto my existing sprinkler system. The zone is for flower beds and I have about 10heads in that zone. If I connect the riser kit to a head do I need to cap off all the other heads in that zone? I read it in the product description and got confused. Please let me know what I should do in this case. Thanks a lot

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 роки тому +1

      For the best pressure I would convert multiple riser heads to connect to the same drip system, but yes you need to cap the ones not connected to drip so they’re not spraying at the same time. For example, I had three heads in my flower bed out front. I converted every head to drip.

  • @sandyg8794

    Hi Matthew! This was great video with awesome information! Right now I have a timer, backflow preventer and PSI regulator I'm sure there is a filter, too) that I connect to my irrigation water spicket/spigot (?). Then I have a garden hose attached, run it along the fence, use a 2-way splitter with short sections of hose that I have 2 soaker hoses attached to for my 2 raised beds. This works really well, but I want to be able to run drip to 5 whiskey barrels that are kind of spread out from the raised beds in the Spring off of this system and not really sure how to do this. I know I would need solid tubing to run between the beds and barrels. Do you think it would be better to use a 3-way splitter and then run the solid tubing around all of the barrels, then add the 1/4" tubing to each barrel in a circle connected to itself? One barrel has a rhubarb, one has a chocolate mint (confined in a pot) and the 3rd has lemon thyme that I need to dig a bunch of it out because it's spreading too much (I may confine it to a pot, too). I usually plant peppers and eggplant in these 2 barrels. The fourth barrel has a liner in it so I use it for violas and extra marigolds. Sorry this is so long, but I thought it might help if I told you what I have to work with. Thank you so much for sharing and adding the links!

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  3 роки тому

      You’ll probably want to use the 1/2 inch black distribution tubing to the barrels and then the 1/4 up to the barrels for the best water flow.

      Drip is designed to emit all the water in the system. There should be no or very little water in the system to cause any busting or cracking of any tubes. You should remove the timer and bring it inside.

    Thank you so much for sharing in such detail. I don't quite understand if you switch your sprinkler head will it no longer provide irrigation to the grass or does it have the ability to both water the grass and water beds as they are installed? I want to install 3ft beds around the perimeter of my square backyard which is just grass right now with six sprinkler heads in two zones. But I don't want to stop watering the grass.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  3 роки тому

      You shouldn’t mix grass sprinklers and drip on the same zone. Each have different watering needs and you’ll be unable to control them separately.

    Thank you so much for this information! I did have one question- what do you do with your drip in the winter?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 роки тому +1

      I believe I answered this in another comment, but drip doesn't need to be winterized like other irrigation. It's intended to emit all the water in the system after use. Even if there is water leftover, because of the emitter holes there is room for expansion. However, you should remove any timers and bring them inside and disconnect the drip itself from the hose bibb until after freezing temperatures in Spring. Mine is personally blown out as part of my irrigation winterization because it is hooked to my sprinkler system, but it is otherwise unnecessary.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  3 роки тому +1

      It’s ultimately up to how you want to do it and the actual space itself. If the spacing isn’t consistent you can use just the 1/2” black distribution tubing and place emitters at each hosta. If it’s pretty consistent spacing, you can just purchase the emitter tubing with the appropriate spacing you need. Depending on the size of the bed, you may be able to get by with just the 1/4” tubing alone. Although for later expansion purposes, you may want to stick with the 1/2” tubing.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 роки тому +1

      I have not had any issues. Wifi can be tricky and there are all sorts of things that could be the cause, including the location placement or your router settings. My hub has been plugged into an outlet in my basement for over a year and I've not experienced a single issue since installing it. The connection from the hub to the actual valves are bluetooth though (to my understanding) so the valves should be placed within the distances noted in the instructions to the wifi hub for them to function properly.

    I’m considering installing a watering system. Do you remove the tubes in the winter and reinstall all of it the following year?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 роки тому

      I assume the "watering system" is drip since you commented on this video. Drip does not have to be removed in winter as the holes drain water from the system itself. However, you should not leave it connected to your hose spigot if that's your method of connection and should bring in any timers or other items you have connected to your hose spigot that could be damaged from the cold.
