    I really do need to get over my fear of setting up drip and I will take a look at your original video. Many of my hydrangeas that have been in the ground since summer of 2017, last year during an unusual, extended heatwave, they really took a hit, so much so I wondered if 3 of them were completely dead. This spring, thankfully, they have all budded out. Unfortunately, the Japanese Maple, also planted 2017, is probably dead. Thank you for your videos, I love your calming, pleasant voice. I'm a Texan now living in New Hampshire and sometimes miss a Southern accent. Have a wonderful weekend!

      I was not able to get to that project this Spring with all of the other projects I had to complete and the neck issues I was experiencing. I also further evaluated the cost after determining how many lights I needed for the back yard and it was much more expensive than I had initially planned for. It'll be a project for fall or next year hopefully.

    How do you figure out which emitters to use i.e. 2 gal vs 1 gal? Trial and error? Starting my first system. Thanks for the videos, very helpful!

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Рік тому +1

      It largely depends on how long you’re going to run your system and how thirsty the plant is you’re putting an emitter on. I tend to run around 30 minutes so my 2GPH emitters put out 1 gallon of water in that time.

    We added grass and a flowerbed that runs around the grass about 2 ft wide and he added a water line now we need to add the holes and drippers but we didn't plant plants we decided to just put wildflower seeds down so how would I go about watering the flowerbed cause the whole thing needs water not just to certain plants.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 місяці тому

      I’d recommend you buy emitter tube that has emitters closer together - every 6 inches or whichever you feel is best. The water spreads out after it enters the ground different widths depending on your soil type.

  • @ConcettaColinRedaMcGrath
    @ConcettaColinRedaMcGrath 2 місяці тому

    Is there a reason you went with the 1/2 inch tube over 1/4 inch in the bed?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 місяці тому

      1/4" tubing doesn't maintain pressure for the lengths of tubing needed in this garden bed with the other drip already located on this zone. I use 1/2" everywhere except in areas where the tubing needs to be more easily manipulated (e.g., curved), and that is typically in small areas around sidewalks. I don't recommend 1/4" drip irrigation in landscape beds generally unless you have a shorter distance to cover for purposes of future proofing your drip system for expansion later.

  • @Alex-qe2lf
    @Alex-qe2lf 2 місяці тому

    Do you stick with the same size emitter (2gph) throughout or do you use various sizes (0.5, 1, 2, 5 gph) for your garden just to keep things simplified.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 місяці тому

      Depends on the plant. Sometimes I use 1 GPH and sometimes 2 GHP, or multiple 2 GPH.

    • @Alex-qe2lf

      Home Depot has these bugcap diffusers / stake kit . one would install it downstream from the 2gh dripper. Do you use these and are they really necessary.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 місяці тому

      Someone has ask about this before and I’ve never seen them. You can instead put your emitter at the end of the tube if you like.

    Do you tend to use more of the black tubing and emitters at each plant than the brown tubing with the emitters embedded? I did a whole shrub/perennial bed with the pressure compensating brown tubing per directions from a customer service rep at Dripworks - 1 gallon, 18" emitter spacing & lines 16" apart. I'm running the water upwards of 2 hours and there was still so much bed that was left dry and plants not getting water so this spring I added 400 more pressure compensating emitters - so the emitters are now 9" apart. I talked with the Dripworks rep to make sure this would work. Still so many plants not getting water. All emitters are working. Maybe I'm not understanding how drip should work. So much work & money and I'm still hand watering things...ugh. Any advice? Zone 6, clay soil.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Рік тому +1

      I only use the black distribution tubing for lengths where I don't need emitters or when I'm not attempting to water an entire bed like in this instance. You didn't clarify whether this is connected to a hose or if it is running through a sprinkler system, or whether this is 1/2" line or 1/4" line. The sprinkler system will likely provide you more pressure than through a hose connected to your home. Overall, I think you have WAY WAY WAY too many emitters for a single zone, which is creating a low pressure issue overall. Unfortunately, the fact that you've added more has likely made the situation twice as worse. I'd encourage you to go back and watch my Drip 101 video if you haven't as there is a portion of it that discusses system pressure.
      It sounds more like you need to zone off areas of your system to get the pressure up overall in each smaller zone and run each zone separately consecutively. For example, fewer lengths of tube in the system increases the pressure of the system and provides consistent output throughout the system. The unfortunate news is if you've added that many more emitters and poked additional holes into the lines and cannot find a way to zone off your system it'll never work correctly.
      The bottom line is you can't connect as much tubing and emitters as you want to drip. The pressure eventually won't support it at some point and then you'll be left with no water in certain areas and/or poor output overall, which is exactly what you're experiencing. If you're using a pressure reducing coupling on the system, I'd encourage you to remove that to see if that helps first (keep the backflow device). If that doesn't work, then shrinking the system into multiple zones that run one after another is the only way it's going to work.
      I don't know what your garden looks like or its size, but to break it down a bit further as to how my system is arranged, I have 5 separate zones to run my entire system that are split as follows: front of home, side of home, other side of home, back yard, containers. Each run at separate times and can be controlled independently with timers.

      @@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden Sorry I should have included more information. It is 1/2" line connected to a short garden hose to spigot. I have 2 zones in this bed and each zone is less than 275' total as that was what Dripworks rep said was the max length and it is tied back into itself (so it's a complete circuit). Each zone is run at separate times. I am using a 35psi pressure reducer as we have very good water pressure and that is also what Dripworks said I should use. All of the emitters are dripping water??

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Рік тому +2

      If all of the emitters are dripping water I don’t understand your concern. Drip is slow, so it’s not going to spread out on top of the ground and water multiple plants. It’s a direct method of watering to a specific rootball to conserve water. It’s going to go into the ground where it’s needed by the roots of a specific plant. You won’t be able to see but a small portion of wet ground immediately surrounding the emitter.
      But due to the number of emitters you said you added it could still be a pressure issue if it’s not putting out enough water. That’s a lot of emitters even for two zones.

  • @at1the1beginning
    @at1the1beginning Рік тому

    Unless your plants are spaced out really far apart, I don't see the point of using individual emitters. A soaker hose would be much easier and advantageous in a situation like this. If you have 50 plants in a bed and you direct 1 emitter to every single one of them, you've so many holes in the tubing it's practically a soaker hose already.
    The argument that it's wasteful of water isn't true in my opinion. People always say that it's better to soak irregularly instead of a constant and steady supply to make the plants more drought tolerant because the roots will grow out in search for water (they do; roots grow where there is water and oxygen). Well in that case, watering the entire bed using a soaker hose will induce that: larger, spread out root systems all throughout the bed instead of right underneath that single emitter.
    It's also much easier to install.
    Also 2: I can't believe your government hasn't implemented a rain water catchment system yet....Here it's obligated. It saves SOOOOOOO much! We use it for all outdoor water use (washing vehicles, irrigation...), our washing machine and to flush the toilet....You can even shower with it if you have the right filtering system.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Рік тому

      I understand your point. But personally, I’ve tried multiple soaker hoses and absolutely none of them work correctly or deliver water evenly that I’ve found. Maybe we don’t have good options here. They also don’t tend to work very long and develop clogs and/or holes. The brown drip tubing with built in emitters spaced every so many inches works much better than any soaker hose I’ve ever seen and is what I use in beds where I have perennial plantings combined with annuals and shrubs. It wasn’t applicable in this specific use case.

    • @at1the1beginning
      @at1the1beginning Рік тому

      @@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden I'll admit, I don't have much experience with either of them, only one soaker hose spiraled across a tree I planted 18 months ago. I might change my mind one day indeed, but it was just my thought.
