    Hi Matthew! This was very interesting. I really appreciate how well you explain everything and make it seem doable for everyone. I hope you're able to get a standard from the offshoot. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. Your "happy accidents" will be fun. I think the Bobo will look good potted up on your patio. Thank you so much for sharing!

    Matthew, I follow both Mike Kincaid and HortTube with Jim Putnam on UA-cam. They are both extremely knowledgeable gardeners with a willingness to share their knowledge with others. I believe that gardeners, as a whole, are some of the most caring and sharing individuals on this wonderful planet! I hope you have a wonderful week! ~Margie

    I noticed an extra shoot on one of my Bobo’s just last week while I was weeding, I will do what you did and pot it up, you can never have to many Hydrangeas, plus I have 4 daughters with gardens, thanks 🙏 for the video

    I LOVE happy accidents! I often get Japanese Painted Ferns from such events and, of course, all kinds of hosta may appear each spring.

    I'm so glad I found your channel. We have similar gardening interests. On my garden chore list for this week is to prune my lilac (am hoping for a sucker to pot up). And I'm in year 3 of trying to train a Native Western Redbud (I'm in SoCAL) into a standard. Will be following your projects, as always, with interest. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to share with us.

    You’ve inspired me! You explained propagation for hydrangea very simply and that Bobo looks perfect for a pot on my deck lol. Thanks again for all info shared. You are very organized!

    I had a shoot near my Annabelle hydrangea this spring, dug it up and moved it to another area. It is doing beautifully and has some buds on it. So happy!

      You can safely dig up an entire mature arborescens from it's roots and replant it in pieces. Almost every little piece of root will eventually regrow.

    Very nice! I love to find happy accidents around the garden. I divide all my new plants including hydrangeas, and spread them around my yard. Sometimes I think they plug a few plants in one can to make it look like a bigger bush. Looking forward to seeing how your standard propagation comes along! 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌸🌸🌸😃

    Excited to see if you get a new hydrangea standard out of this!! I love how easy it is with hydrangeas. I found a single plant of a Butterfly Bush variety that PW doesn't seem to sell/grow anymore, so I'm going to try propagating it a bit later this Summer for my own garden since I'd ideally like 3 of the variety! Your vid gives me confidence to try!!

    I purchased 3 candy apple hydrangea paniculata 3 years ago now is bigger than my limelight but 2 of them get more sun and has few big steams from the roots like standard. Actually I can made 2 standard hydrangeas from my paniculata but I scared to divided
    Thank you for this video I will dig it out and try
    Instead of limelight that grow as shrub candy apple grow with long stems from the roots

    I've had a number of happy accidents with hydrangea offshoots. Today I was dumping out the pop up bag that I throw weeds and dead plants into and out came a piece of a very woody branch from a shrub I ripped out thinking it was dead. Leaves are sprouting at one end and roots at the other. Can't remember what it was (callicarpa?) but stuck it in a pot and will see what happens. I am a retired attorney (not IP) now spending my time gardening. My husband installed floodlights on our New York City terrace because when I was working I often came home late and did my gardening after getting the children in bed! I always enjoy your videos.

    Mike Kincaid is a really good channel for propagating! I hope your cutting roots well for you. I can tell you that in the Fall I've taken cuttings and stuck them into my outdoor pots and so so many rooted. I probably have about 15 limelights that are about 2 foot tall that I need to find a permanent home for now. I don't think I need anymore. lol

    I have had a lot of luck with propagating these. I have 2 standards and they do root easy without hormone. I now have 6. Kept in the shade and watered until I saw new growth. Good luck I hope it works for you...🤞🏽

    Best of luck with your propagation. It's a terrific experiment. Also good legal information about propagating patented plants. I don't begrudge plant developers their profits because they do a lot for gardeners

    I had a happy accident few wks ago with my Bluebeard shrub. one of the branches i guess was laying in the soil and mulch. There were 2 pieces that had roots 😊 I have wanted to propagate my Limelights but never take the time to. I wish i could get my Annabelle Hydrangeas to bloom had them for 4 years now and no blooms 😑

    I love love your channel!! Did you go to Alabama? I live in north Alabama on Weis lake. I am so excited to see how this does for you!! I love Jim on hort tube and have learned so much about planting in my area especially stuff that doesn’t like wet feet!! I have been planting my stuff up above the ground more!! Now hydrangeas my blue ones flower early and are so beautiful but they wilt in the evening!! I have them in too much sun!! Been here since 2005 so I just can’t move them!! Even live the structure in the winter!!
    Good luck!! I enjoy gardening so much!!
    As much as plants cost and the time, water, and fertilizer I dare someone to think they can sue me!! Love that you addressed the patents!! I appreciate all the science and work that goes behind a patent! I am a nurse and can’t believe how long some medications were branded before becoming generic. All of these varieties wouldn’t have been here without science but like coleus I shave learned that they root within a week so buying big ones for so much money such a waste. I love to pin my plants down water well for a week and see what happened!!
    My bubblegum petunias all lived through winter!! I cut them back and the nights below 28 put burlap cloths over and they are a fulls 6x6 bed!!

    What about putting a little clear baggy over the top leaves to help prevent water loss through the leaves?? Just a thought.

    I would have air layered it.

    • @SouthernersGarden
      @SouthernersGarden  2 роки тому

      I tried that on this exact shrub last year and didn't have any success. I need to experiment more with that propagation method. Since this was more of a sucker because it was growing so quickly, I didn't really want to leave it hanging around on the mother plant much longer. It's reached that size in a matter of weeks out of nowhere. Next time! Great suggestion!

      Have you tried air layering? I’m keeping a very tall straight stem on a limelight I propagated a few years back. I chopped it all very low last year and it through up a bunch of super string shots. It’s a 4’ stalk and I’d like to cut a band of skin away and bag it with medium to see if I can root it while it’s attached. Looking to source some info. 😊

    Please conduct your own research regarding the cultivars of any plant you are propagating. The patent protection for Limelight expired in 2021, as the patent was originally filed in 2001 (see patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&d=PALL&s1=PP12874.PN.), but trademarks exist for a much longer period and legal counsel should be sought before propagating anything for sale to others.

    Hello, I live in Hattiesburg and I am overwhelmed with weeds. As soon as I pull them, they come back en force! My garden looks like a jungle. It is so embarrassing! I don't know what to do. I don't want to use chemicals. Why don't you have any weeds? How do I get rid of mine, without the chemicals because I don't want cancer and I don't want to harm my wildlife and dogs.

    What would you suggest getting for preannual that would only get morning sun?
    I wanna bring life to side of my garage that face southeast sun

    • @SouthernersGarden
      @SouthernersGarden  2 роки тому

      Do you mean perennial? A true southeast facing wall should get a pretty good amount of sun unless there is something else shading the area, like a tree or other structure. You'll want to look for part-shade plants, but depending on the light some full sun plants may do perfectly fine (or stretch a bit). I can't really provide suggestions because I don't know where you are, what zone you garden in, what the soil is like, or what your watering needs are. If you have a local garden center, they should be a great source for you though!

    Great video. On hydrangea standards, does the stem continue to grow taller through the years or do you need to start off with a stem that is the height you want? Thanks!

    • @naeelabdur-rahman4303
      @naeelabdur-rahman4303 2 роки тому

      Start off with the stem the size you want it to be,it doesn't get taller through the years.
