I just adopted a ball python, and when I was buying the bedding I had two different employees tell me conflicting information and was second guessing myself the whole time. So I appreciate your videos they help calm my nerves on being a new reptile owner.
the same thing is happening to me because i might get a snake soon so i'm doing as much research as possible and the bedding options really stumped me
Aspen bedding works great for ball pythons
@victoria kirylow what about corn snakes? What would be the best?
@victoria kirylow when should u clean the enclosure? Like is it similar with cleaning litters of cats?
Omg when I got my first pet (a gerbil) I was still living at home and we did tons of research and even my dad did research and we got to the pet shop and she reccomended wrong food for us and my dad apparently thought she was more trustworthy than all of the research we did cause he forces me to buy the bad food. No bad feelings against him but it goes to show how even when you inform yourself you are influenced by the employees just cause they are standing right in front of you and it's hard to say that they are wrong.
Made humidity box there's a MAJOR problem 😬

My leopard gecko is one that loves her moist hide so much that she stays in there. So I always just let it dry out between sheds. Super important information in this video 😊
Elle's Reptiles How often do you change out the moss and clean the humidity box? Once a month?
Morgan Gobin I change mine whenever it starts to pack down (so it's not fluffy anymore) or when it starts to smell weird. So anywhere from 2 weeks to a month.
Elle's Reptiles I know this is an old video, and I know you use yours for a gecko but I have always been worried about my ball python getting cut on the plastic, am I just being paranoid?
Micheala W If you’re worried about your reptile getting cut you can melt the outside edges with some type of lighter.
@@heysaucemikehere1804 or maybe cut it but put maybe glue around the hole

Do you think you guys could do an in-depth video on how to deal with scale rot someday?
I hope to try out a humidity box and the “layered” substrate technique on my ball python when I take him home. The idea of him getting stuck shed and/or scale rot really freaks me out! 😅
I have never seen scale rot, and I have been using moist hides for snakes for over 20 years. I think the secret, besides not living in South Florida, is to let the moss dry out in the box a bit before dampening it again.
Ball pythons are friendly, just make sure to take it out and do little check ups if you’re real worried. My snake doesn’t mind handling so I take him out like twice a week and always look over him to ensure he’s all good.
@Chad Slithers' Documentary If he didn’t eat when you tried feeding him maybe try giving him a humidity box-especially if you use a dry substrate like aspen. Ball pythons are tough, but they sometimes refuse food if humidity and temperatures aren’t right.
My snake is doing good. Eats like a champ and only usually goes off food if it’s winter or if he’s in shed (which he is now, actually). He’s at least four and a half feet long.
Me: doesn’t have a snake
Also me: now I know how to make a humidity box
So so me

Your crickets chirping in the background made me panic my crickets somehow got out of thier enclosure. I had a good laugh over that.
I just now realized it wasn't my crickets thanks to your comment :p
You reminded me of the time crickets got into the store and I could hear them chirping louder than the refrigerators that they were hiding under.
I thought something was going wrong with my phone or clock at first. I quite liked the happy little chirpy noises they added ^-^

You know how many people probably have a humidity box bc of you? You’re very inspiring. And information.
I was just given a king snake that had stuck eye caps. I gave him a 20 minute soak, also used a humidity box and waaaa laaaa, the next day, eye caps are gone!!!
You have taught me so much! Thanks!!!
Will you do a video talking about the spider morph in ball pythons and some of the recent discourse? It could be another con sub!
TheImpiroGirl well she did say that she was done with con subs in the last con subs video sooo.
TheImpiroGirl Emily is not a ball python breeder or in the part of the community with ball python related stuff, so she will most likely not get into it with everyone else. Plus, Emily is not running a drama channel so I’m certain she’ll just leave it be since everything that needs to be said has already been said.
While it'd be interesting to hear her view, I feel like there's really not much to add to the discussion tbh
TheImpiroGirl it’s refreshing too see a younger person who doesn’t allow their channel to become a drama machine. There’s already so much of that everywhere in UA-cam/social media. Keep it straight and wholesome!
Sorry, I'm just getting into snakes. What's wrong with the spider morph? I think it's pretty. Is it harmful to the snake?
I GOT A PET SNAKE THIS MORNING! Then I woke up.😭😂(I actually had a dream where my parents got me an albino milk snake, and it was great)
I had one the other day were I got a chocolate ball python I named Indiana Jones but i just called em Indi.
I had dream like that but it was a ghost hognose, I hated that i woke up
I had a dream that I got an albino pied bp and I placed it in my Crestie’s cage. The end. That’s all that happened.
Oof, Owens I am in the same predicament
I was at the tinley reptile expo. I had just brought an albino hognose and then i woke up😭😭
Years ago when I started watching Snake Discovery, I was not scared of snakes but I never thought I'd get one. NOW, I have adopted two corn snakes from a less than ideal previous owner and everything I've learned over the years helped me transition them to a much better situation including separating (from cohabing), vet visits, humidity boxes, temperature gradients, proper feeding, and proper enrichment all within one week. My rescue corns thank you, Ed and Emily!! 💖
Thank you! I did this with our Ball Python when we first got her because of this video. She is doing AMAZINGLY well. She sheds perfectly, and has no problems with eating and using the toilet. We purchased a really nice rock hide humidity box from Echo-Terra for this purpose, and it has small drain holes in the bottom to help make sure there is never any standing water in the bottom. I also mounted a battery powered Bluetooth cigar hygrometer thermostat unit from Inkbird to the wall of the hide and love being able monitor the humidity and temperature of the box. Recently, I added a separate heating pad and redundant safety wifi temperature controller to the box and now have a perfect daytime/nighttime temperature gradient in this hide and the same with her dry hide. She spends about 50% of her time in each.
I held my first 2 snakes yesterday!! A lovely cornsnake and a mystic ball python! It was amazing
1: I'd like to see your take on spider ball python morphs. I have a feeling I know what your take on it would be, but I've seen you holding some spiders (like at NARBC) enthusiastically so i'm not sure.
2: have you guys found Candycane yet? iIm gonna keep asking until I hear about her in a video!
What is wrong with the spider ball morph I see a lot of videos about it in my recommended but haven't watched them?
@@starfirebird3099 ohh wow I didn't know. Thank you! I'll keep this in mind in the future when I hopefully get a ball python and I hope this stops.
Patchy_ Art thats what is the real problem. People buy the spider because it looks cool, and there is no disclaimer that there is this problem with the snake. They then do research and find out what is going on.
We need the update on her!!
Yeah, in addition to spider bps, gotta include the other morphs that have the same wobble issue, such as woma, champagne, and super sable.
Interesting to note is that when spider is bred to spider for an attempt at super spider, or similar method to super champagne, or spider is bred to champagne, it is lethal and the baby dies 100%. I personally think that's a good sign from nature that the half-step to those lethal combos, the het gene spider/champagne morphs, aren't healthy morphs for a healthy snake.
A good counter point I hear sometimes is that a wobbling bp isn't suffering or in any kind of pain because the snake most likely wouldn't eat if it was suffering in any way, so at least breeders aren't hurting those snakes like how pug breeders are giving pugs horrific breathing issues, but even then, I don't think it's fair to an individual to purposefully give it a physical handicap like the balancing issue of the wobble, when it doesn't understand why it has a harder time righting itself than it should have. And I would support a ban of the sales of spider/champagne morphs or at least hope that the public becomes so aware of the wobble issue that the drop in sales causes breeders to stop breeding them.
Lucky timing.
I recently (I mean today) moved my danger noodle into a bigger terrarium and wanted to get them a humidity box. Wasn't too sure how to make one, until now.
I finally got a humidity box in my ball python’s tank and she just shed and it was perfect! Keeping humidity levels up in the tank when she’s in shed is so hard, especially in the winter! Thank you for the info!
I got my first snake about a month ago and she's going into shed! I really needed this video! Thank you~!
I love the 'bloopers' that you include at the end of the video! 😂❤️
Love and Blessings to you both. I am 66yrs old and enjoy you and your snakes. You help me get through my chronic pain
Me and my significant other just got a beautiful snow morph baby cornsnake!
This channel has helped educate us before getting her (we think it's a little girl but know it's hard to tell when they are younger) and has helped us to give our new little one the best care and environment/home we can. We both have always wanted a snake as a pet. I particularly have always wanted a cornsnake and now we are so happy to have a new family member!
This channel has also inspired us to do a lot of outside education before getting our little one so we could be prepared for her.
So thank you snake discovery for inspiring and educating us! We really appreciate it and will continue to learn so we can be the best snake parents we can be!
Thank you so much for this video!! My ball python had been having issues sheds and while I could get a humidifier to raise the ambient air humidity to about 70%, it wasn't effective at all. This video saved me so much headache. My snake has loved it since I made one according to your tutorial and had a beautiful shed yesterday. His scales feel soft and healthy too. Thank you again so much!
I haven't seen many reptile channels talk about this so thank you!
I’ve been watching you for a longtime. when I got my western hognose and he went into blue I knew just what to do so he would have perfect sheds. Love the humidity box, what a great idea!
Laura Chapman Have you had any issues with the snake cutting themselves on the plastic? I’m so worried my bp is going to hurt herself.
@@heysaucemikehere1804 you can melt the cut edges with a lighter to smooth them out, or use a soldering tool to cut it with.
Absolutely wonderful ! I made a humidity box as you mentioned exactly and she shed out instantly ❤️❤️❤️ love love your UA-cam channel!!!! I highly recommend this !!!!
The importance of this video can not be overstated. In Germany sphagnum moss boxes have been a popular standard hiding place for ball pythons for years ever since the concept was introduced into the reptile hobby by Stefan Broghammer. A lot of people in the US seem to struggle with stuck sheds so it is great to see you establish the practice in America. I have been using sphagnum moss with my regius for 10 years and I'd say it is an absolute necessity. Boas enjoy them as well though they will frequently use their sphagnum boxes as toilets.
Hey Emily! Did you ever find Candy Cane??
AAAMANDA I was just going to ask this!

Great video! I have been wondering about humidity boxes for a long time because I live in a very dry part of Nebraska and I don't want to dry out any reptiles by mistake or have shed issues when I get my snake. This answered a lot of questions I had and made me more confident that I will be able to provide everything a snake needs when I finally bring one home.
That rat snake is absolutely gorgeous by the way. 😍
Literally shook. I made this box and my snake at the most perfect shed ever!! Thank you!!
Love your videos. I dont have have a snake but i do have a leopard gecko. this info is really helpful for her humidity box
I love your videos, and you made me love snakes!! I used to be scared of them and I'm glad you changed that about me.
Thank you so much for this video. I have had a ball python for years and she has never had a complete shed. Even in a good, 'high end' enclosure I have struggled with her sheds (and had bad experiences with more tropical substrates, so I use aspen). I put in a humidity box like the day after I saw this video and this morning I check on her to see her first complete shed, eyecaps to tail tip all together. I was so excited and rushed to show my roommates.
Thank you for this! I'm sure my snakes thank you too. :)
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I watched the original video you posted on humidity boxes to help with shedding. I have had perfect sheds since.
That Texas Rat snake looks soooo pretty with his rows of scales.
I love that you put the bloopers at the end of the videos.
We just adopted our first snake, a ball python! He has an amazing personality and we have learned so much by watching your channel! Thank you for the education!
Thank you so much for your videos. My daughter and I absolutely love them. You have given us so much knowledge as new snake owners. 🐍
Bruh your coffee maker in the back round looks like it's gonna kill me 😂
Thanks for the help with this useful hacks 😁😁👍🏻😊🐍
Thank you for the information! I added a humidity box for my ball python's habitat about 3 weeks ago and last weekend he had a great shed! First time since my daughter got him that he wasn't crawling around with ragged shed for weeks. I'm hoping for a picture-perfect shed soon because I want to frame it for dear daughter!
I had been concerned that he seems to ONLY want to be in the box (which is actually one of those round, wide-mouth, cookie canisters I found at Walmart - the cheap one, not the one with the sealing lid, or the glass one). It is reassuring to know I can just keep the moss mostly dry when he's not getting ready to shed and he will be just fine.
Looking forward to your next video and learning something new!
Hi Emily!!! I'm getting a ball python in a week! I've been so excited! I love your videos, you help so much in my research and I live for the adorable subtitles you give the snakes.❤❤❤

i finally got my first snake and had to show this video to my mom because she didnt believe me when i told her my snake needed a humidity box! thank you !!
Great video!!! Just starting with snake keeping after I bought a baby corn and then rescued another. I’ve seen mentions of humidity boxes but not how to use or make. The rescue had some stuck shed so I’m definitely going to start using these. Thank you so much and keep up the great videos.
The snake at the end: DAD! I want to go to film schoolz 😵😵
I love you guys❤️❤️❤️
Our BP use a humidity box when he blues up. Works like a charm. Used to have all kinds of problems with stuck shed, especially around the neck just behind the head. Now, full complete sheds every time! Thank you!
My Ball Python is coming in tomorrow morning, and thanks to you I finally feel I'm completely prepared! He'll be the first snake I've ever owned, so I'm nervous and excited equally.
Be sure to quarantine him on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor his health. After quarantine don’t use aspen, it doesn’t retain the humidity they need. Cypress mulch/forest floor is a good substrate. Humidity boxes are insufficient. The humidity of the entire enclosure should be 60-70% (measured by a digital hygrometer), and a bit higher in shed.
#early squad i love your channel so much!
First,and i really,REALLY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
my western hognose was in shed last month and these worked great! she is my first snake and this is her first shed with me and it came off all in one piece including eye caps!
I wish I would have discovered this channel couple years ago when I first started taking care reptiles, it would have been pretty useful, not to mention the fact that it would have avoided lots of mistakes
Who else is here, not because you need to learn how to make a humidity box, but really because you get to see the cute little noodles?
I love you... Can you do moore vids on lepord geckos bc in getting one but if you dont know alot abt them kts fine i love you ❤❤❤
I just wanted to thank you.
I'm a first time snake owner and my ball python is just over a year old. I did SO much research prior to getting him. I thought I was set. But turns out there's still a learning curve.
He's had rough sheds the last 6 months, despite my attempts to keep the humidity at the appropriate levels. That hygrometer you tossed? The same exact one I had in his tank.
A few times I've had to soak him and gently scrub it off because he was so miserable. This last one was bad, even soaking didn't help. I was at my wits end and ready to take him in to the vet. I stumbled across this video. I dumped his coconut fiber substrate that held moisture a little TOO well and replaced it with reptibark. Made him a humidity box that same afternoon and within DAYS he had a complete shed. Nothing stuck anywhere.
Thank you so SO much. I have a happy snake again!
Keep in mind that humidity boxes on their own are insufficient for ball pythons, they require high humidity throughout the enclosure to stay healthy. Are you using a digital hygrometer now? What’s the enclosure humidity?
Thank you for making this. My Marine Bio teacher has a spider ball python and a red corn snake, and both were having some pretty bad sheds, so I saw you posted this and was able to make one for her corn snake and she made one for the python. The corn snake has had 2 perfect shed now and we are still trying to get the python to use it properly, so thank you for helping
You made this vid today. I love your channel and snakes thay are so cute. soon i am getting a corn snake i can't wait but i have to save up
£200. right now i have £15 and it will probably take long to get £200
Lucian Bandac that’s so cool! I want to get a snake but my dad is petrified. Try getting a baby sitting gig or car cleaning for some say money!
You could try rescuing one!! If you don't mind me asking, where do you live? It's weird that they're so expensive lol
Pippetandpossum the only countries I can think of that use pound currency are Arab countries and the UK. Usually though, the Arab countries use the $ symbol AND are not big on snakes nor do they ‘usually’ keep foreign species of them, so I’m leaning towards UK.
Lucian Bandac I strongly recommend you find out how much snake, accessories, enclosure and two sets of food will cost and then wait until you have triple that to buy a snake. Pets are costly, hard to maintain and you might end up having to go to the vet or needing a “snake savings” in case of emergency. Of course, that’s just my advice. Best of luck!
Anna Ah makes sense, thank you
Me: I need to make a humidity box.

Also me: oh yah I don’t own a snake
My new snake is in blue and getting ready for his first shed with me and I’m so glad I found your channel a couple months ago! I feel confident now I can make the best environment for my little guy🐍🤗
Nice, what species?
My little milksnake baby was having trouble shedding about two weeks ago and I made her one and she shed completely within 2 hours :o these are awesome :)
I'm also wondering how long you can leave the moss in the box before needing to change it out and clean the box. I can't find the answer to this question anywhere. Please Emily give us some guidelines on the upkeep of the humidity box.
You should change the sphagnum moss every 4 weeks/once a month. Also make sure to change it out completely and clean the box if your snake decides to go to the bathroom inside of it.
This is kinds a stupid question but do all snakes need a humid box?
Wait better question: Is a humidity box all you need for your snakes humidity levels.?
They don't need it, but it helps with stuck shed.
thank you sooooo much for making this video! My ball python is shedding perfectly now! I for the life of me couldnt keep the humidity high enough and this box did the trick! Thank you again! 💜💜
That Texas rat snake is GORGEOUS!! I love it’s coloring😍
for wetting the moss in a humidity box could you use a spray bottle filled with water?
Yes it works well
Is it just me or the fear you have having lots of animals, that at night like the shelves will fall and all the animals will go everywhere? 😂
Huh, it's interesting that you made this again! I had some rough times with sheds, I'd tried changing to tropical substrate or having large water dishes and they'd still have stuck shed. Using a humidity box during shedding has been fantastic!
Thank you for teaching me about reptiles I have been watching this channel for 3 years and thanks to you I might be able to get a snake 🐍
That derpy snake looks like Gritty from the side!
do you have to replace the moss frequently? to clean the box
I clean my moss out just because after my snake sheds, he usually leaves behind a big poop. 😱
I was wondering about that too. I use paper towels in my ball python's humidity hide because he is a little urate king. I don't want to have to throw away the moss every time he wets it, which is inconveniently frequent.
Austin Mark i dont have a ball yet, id probably mist the tank daily
If you use sphagnum moss, you can rinse it off a few times before it's done, as if naturally has antibacterial properties, which is why most use it. Less chances of scale rot.
Great video Emily! ❤ i love the idea of the humidity box and i use them for multiple animals I keep!
I had my ball python for almost 2 years before I stumbled across your channel last year and learned about this simple hack for my snake and ever since her sheds have been complete and she’s stayed hydrated in my dry Nevada climate! I have gotten more tropical arboreal species and an axolotl since so the humidity levels in my home have almost increased to where I don’t need a humidity box in my snake enclosures besides shed times
Did anyone else see the pickle? 9:22
U should colab with goherping
Although I do not have a snake or reptile, I find this the best channel I've seen thus far on reptiles.
Emily your channel is one of the only ones not involved in a drama or controversy which is why i have continued to watch since you were like at 80k subs.
Hey, Emily & Ed! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the spider-morph ball python controversy. I think that’d make a really interesting video.
I’m getting my first snake and it’s going to be a ball python
My albino corn snake, shed for me for the first time last night. I couldnt find moss in time to make a humidity box so I used damp paper towels. My moss from Amazon arrived this morning (sooo helpful) so I'll be changing out the towels with moss and making one for my rescue ball python.
I have a snake and you are the reason I learned to love snakes in the first place
Simply use mothers tupperware container
*SAY YOUR PRAYS*
I use humidity boxes for everything because they can also act as lay boxes 😁
Oops should have watched the whole video before commenting she said this lol
I just used one for the first time and my baby girl had a beautiful shed!
I know it's a year later but thank you SO much for this! I got a baby ball python last week and I've been struggling to get her habitat humid enough. I made her a humidity box last night, she went right into it and stayed almost all night! Happy snake, happy snake mommy :)
Keep in mind that humidity boxes are not a replacement for proper enclosure humidity. After quarantine on paper towel for the first six weeks, cypress mulch/forest floor is a good humidity retaining substrate. Mixing in coconut fibre can help as well. The humidity of the whole enclosure should be 60-70% (measured by a digital hygrometer), and a bit higher in shed.
Did pickle rick show up for just a second to use the microwave, then leave?
Roxanne Machado yep.

Was wondering if you're for or against breeding spider ball pythons? It's ok if you prefer to stay out of the recent hubub going on with reptile youtubers right now but I am curious.
I got a snake and started watching you she ran away and when never found her a few months later I got a bird but I still watch you beacus I just love your videos!
Thank you so much for including geckos and humidity boxes, I recently got a sick leopard gecko and was told to give him a humidity box, this being the first time I'm ever using a box with a reptile (i've had a three toed box turtle for 8 years and we just got a special needs respiratory virus ball python about 2 years ago) I'll be making adjustments to my gecko's humidity box now that I know the correct set up. (I've only had him for about 3 weeks)
