A couple of the ones in the end close up have very clear bellies, and one looks like it has broken sort of stripes (around 18:41). Could be more complex, a bit like red hair in humans where there are some main mutations in MC1R gene that make red but loads of smaller effect variants control what exact colour. If it's a variant (or a couple) that's clearing up the belly pattern breeding one of those with Stripey might hint if this is a complex trait (multi var) in a way that may not be clear crossed with sisters.
Maybe it's expression levels (lower for dark pigmentation on the bellies) or something. But you guys are the baby bullsnake experts, I have no idea what normal range of belly patterns look like 😂 Super cool to see this clutch!
Yeah! I noticed that too! Also have no clue on genetic stuff, but it kinda looked like at least one has partial striping.
Especially the last baby from the first look at after hatching it had a very clear belly and what looked like almost equally spaced and sized dots along his sides the one at the end had the start of stripes along its side that looked cool
Thought that too! It looked a lot like it had the same trait, just less expressive
I noticed that too!
I think that stripey may have two separate differences going on. One for the clear belly and another for the stripes and his pattern is kind of a reverse of the normal one. Some of the babies did get the clear belly so that’s why I figured that Stripey’s uniqueness is caused by two separate gene mutations.
I agree. I did notice that some of the babies had very checkered bellies, and others had clear white bellies, and I'm surprised they didn't notice and bring that up. Even if his stripe trait is 'nothing', I think the belly scute pattern may be 'something', or at least a random genetic mutation that can be replicated through line-breeding. And they can breed Stripy to the other girls again next year, so fingers crossed we may still get some answers :)
I've noticed that. Plus I think the stripe pattern is either recessive or co-dominant with a different gene possibly. Tho im probably hopeful it can be bred to the babies
Agree!! Well I am excited for next year when they line breed! Maybe we will get the answers then!!
Yep, I was thinking about that. Even the colours look a bit different (I don't if this is due to the camera or the lighting) but I agree with you. There are some babies with white belies and some dark scales to the sides two.
My kids call them "wishers".
Emily: Are these babies going to have decent personalities?
Ed: No, that never happens
They're scared, what do you expect?
“You’re just like your mother! Yes you are!!”
Please- i loved that 😭😭
Fun Fact: The floaty bits on the dandelion are called pappus, whose name comes from an ancient Greek word for grandfather since it resembles a white beard
holy geez just came on youtube and fund this many notifications! thx so much :>
we called them wishes as kids lol
Called them fairies
Awww that’s nice
Came for the sneks but learned something else.. that's nice!
That what I call my grandfather
To save everyone the trouble, a dandelion fluff is a pappus and multiple are pappi, as in "I blew the dandelion pappi off the stem" or "I caught a thistle pappus floating in the air. Make a wish and let it go!" As a bonus, using wind to transport seeds is called anemochory.
I saw pappi and thought Popeye 😂
@@summer_born_in_winter And that reminds me that Popeye's nephews are named... Poopeye, Pupeye and Pipeye. Heehee...Poopeye...

I was honestly talking to my sister this morning about how I was expecting a post about baby snakes and was getting impatient, and then you posted!

Stripy definitely has something going on. Several of the babies have a clear or mostly clear belly while I think one of the babies doesn't have stripes but a busier border pattern.
Clear belly babies look like het pied ball pythons are they
At 18:43 there’s a baby with broken striping.
@@soggymilquetoast I saw that. Stripey has a broken-up stripe as well. Maybe they will hold that one back and if it's female breed it back to Stripey.
@@atticus3442 can someone explain incest breeding? I understand it for this purpose of figuring out mutations, but USUALLY the babies seem fairly normal (these ones hatched 16+ days late but i mean....possible other factors, and it doesnt seem COMMON in incest breedings). So is direct incest/REPEATED incest just not a thing/ big deal in reptilians?
@@Night-ud4ew I can't remember which video they talk about this ... But, yeah? They mentioned that it's not really a big problem with reptiles :)
You've maybe realized this, but Hannah laid first this year, so there might be smthn interesting at work between her and stripey for hatch time too
My mom would’ve screamed 😂
Also, the snakes are…. SOO CUTE!!!

So interesting that Stripey came out late, and then his entire clutch does the same.. i wonder if incubation times have a genetic factor?

Those eggs are huge! But I have been binging hognose and garter kids. 😆 I love this channel!!!
I’m so happy that all of them hatched hopefully you have more and hopefully we see other snakes that have hatched and our like the father of Hannah
It seems like the clear belly is definitely a genetic trait of some kind. I counted 8 with clear bellies versus 6 without(from what I could tell in the video). That would mean it could be a recessive trait that Hannah is het for or that maybe Stripey’s pattern is a codominant trait and with only one copy it comes out as a clear belly with no stripes. Or maybe it’ll just be a line bred trait. The genetics are super interesting to think about because we don’t know yet
Yeah
Yeah it is
ua-cam.com/video/vM6YwVtcJjg/v-deo.html
Yeah I wondered why they didn’t comment on the clear bellies.
@@Erin78G Because that's not a genetic trait (Sorry if I had some bad grammar) my first language isn't English.
At 18:41 in this video, when your planning across the baby's, one of them has a solid section of stripe and a clear belly. If that's a girl you could retain her and try breeding Stripey to her. Just a thought.
But thats stripeys child?

For any new viewers, at 7:58 Emily is rubbing the shell to encourage the baby to emerge. In the wild, baby snakes are encouraged to hatch by the feeling of their siblings slithering over their eggs, and this recreates that. It’s similar to how Emperor Penguin chicks are encouraged to hatch by the sound of other chick’s calls.

this seems to be a pretty healthy clutch, many of them came out by themselfs, none of them got rotten, damn, stripy has some good genes on him (also same as him, they all took their time comming out XD )
Wow you look like you now your snakes (I’m new to this channel) I certainly don’t
God, it feels like yesterday Emily was saying that in a year or two Stripey would be able to breed, and now we get to see his babies.

Ya
The reason I watch you on UA-cam ur actually very educational
They are so cute keep it up with the snakes
Didn't you say Stripey himself took a long time to hatch? Maybe that's why these took so long to develop. And maybe all that extra time is why they survived so well.
Emily: “Welcome to the world?”
Baby snake: “SCREW YOU!”
Lol
Lol
Lol!

So true
I love the cute baby snakes, they are soooo precious! Can I go on a wait list for a future clutch?
Watching your videos make me happy 😃
The way Emily says "adorable" is so freakin adorable
I love hearing how excited Emily and Ed are every time they get a clutch. They get to be proud parents every couple of weeks
I love how you guys just put words for the snakes to say something
They are more cute that i expected😄
Then my mind is like "If Peanut kicks the bucket, you should see if Stripy and Brad would breed, since we know for a fact that since Stripy came from Brad, if it's a recessive trait Brad would 100% carry it"
woaaaah lets bump this up
@Napstablook Hannah and Stripey are brother and sister anyway, I think in one video Emily explained that since snakes don’t always roam far from where they are hatched, some inbreeding is expected in the wild and doesn’t harm the snakes (as long as it isn’t for multiple generations).
@Napstablook ALABAMA SNAKES 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's next year's plan ;) Even if Peanut is still with us, we've decided to retire him from breeding. (Shh don't tell him though!)
@@SnakeDiscovery just give him a couple of sheds from the girls, and that should cheer him up
You should definitely hold back at least one female! Theoretically if Stripey won the genetic lottery and developed a mutated gene on his own, only his offspring would carry it - none of his sisters would have it. It could take several more years to find out, but the payoff could be a really cool morph. Love the weird stuff like this, you never know! Beautiful babies regardless. :)
I love you
@@nevaehpetch319 what the
Absolutely right. Though breeding him to his sister was a good experiment, I feel like the truth will HOPEFULLY be revealed after breeding him to one of his daughters. Can't wait to see where this goes! Hope we're witnessing the birth of a new morph!
I’m obsessed with these videos!
Love the video! I love snakes so much
I think it's remarkable that Stripey, who took so long to hatch, managed to help produce n entire clutch of late-hatching babies. That sounds like a dominant gene indeed, and all the bullsnakes look healthy. Hannah made good tough strong healthy eggs for those babies.
That's like where I did my internship. They had a mutation for their vultures that basically changed their incubation period XD
(Also made them have feathers around the neck)
I love the names of the parents, so I was so happy to finally be able to see their clutch after months! IM SO HAPPY!

She used to be called Plain Jane. 🧐
maybe she spread her poop all over the cage?
Ok
I think she spreads her poop around.
i wonder if stripeys gene mutation is more of a "blank belly" gene than a "stripe along the sides" gene? because lots of these babies have super blank bellies. what if you bred one of the blank babies to stripey to see what happened?
I’m not too sure they’d be keen on that mainly because they’d be breeding a second generation with Stripey. The mom was already Stripey’s clutchmate, I don’t think they go past that
@@arachanine i assumed it would be fine though because they've said in a lot of videos that in breeding snakes really isn't that big of a deal
@@hannahk.jeckell3503 for so long. If you keep doing it it will eventually cause deformities and other negatives that outweigh the positives. Stripey may also be the product of inbreeding himself, but I’m not sure
It would take 3-4 generations of inbreeding for deformities to show. If Stripey isnt a product of inbreeding, breeding with one of his offspring should not cause issues
