ROAMS01E07 Suzuki Jimny VS Toyota Fortuner at Helderberg Offroad & 4x4 (2019)

  • I decided to take the Suzuki Jimny on an offroad trail while in Somerset West. The vineyards of the wine route would be our playground for the morning as I met up with Simon & Minouw from Rolbos Overland, and headed to the Helderberg Estate for some 4x4ing! Putting their Toyota Fortuner to the Test against the Jimny!

    I own a 2009 petrol 2.7 Fortuner and I'll be the first to admit it's not perfect. But for the price you pay and the all round capability you get it just cannot be beaten. 7 seats, good off roading ability, decent cargo space, livable as a daily driver, tough and reliable engine....the list goes on. Kudos to the Jimny but if I could have only one the Fortuner wud be it

    Reducing tyre pressure will not prevent your tyres from being punctured. It's works the other way. When we go in to the deep jungle we always use high tyre pressure to prevent tyre damage. It's the trade-off we pay for safe return :). It will make the offroading harder but safe for the tyres + tyres are very expensive in our country:)

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому +6

      Very interesting! I have also heard of using hyper inflation to prevent punctures in certain situations too, especially in certain rocky terrains. I know its a bit of a contravertial topic in some places! But thank you for the perspective.

    • @ianparsons849
      @ianparsons849 5 років тому

      I’m curious about tyre pressures for slick mud in rainforests. Would it be beneficial to have higher pressures to cut through the top layer or lower pressures for increased surface area?

    • @ianparsons849
      @ianparsons849 5 років тому +1

      And I’m assuming you run the skinniest tyres available to minimise puncture risk?

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому +1

      Ian Parsons we don’t have too many roads like that around here. But in general in South Africa we use lower pressures, I’d be interested to hear his opinions on it, as he probably has a lot more experience of forest roads

    • @sugarnads
      @sugarnads 5 років тому +2

      Lowering pressure causes the tyre to conform over rocks when stepping up etc. it sure as hell does NOT give any resistance to punctures. Quite the opposite. Youre effectively softening your sidewall and the bulging outwards exposes it to staking.
      In mud i imagine a high pressure tyre works to cut down to more solid ground underneath. WRC teams have been using skinny tyres at high pressure for many years in heavy mud and snow conditions for that reason.

    Hi guys, the Fortuner Diff lock was not locking. Check at 2.25 the rear wheel compressed is not turning, if it was locked is should be turning under flex.
    Have Simon check that out, car must be in Low range and the diff lock light must be solid. If it’s flashing it’s not engaging.

    Cool video
    Just have one question though: What about the 'Boomslang' ?
    Was waiting the entire time for that to pop up
    :-)
    If I can comment (in my limited experience - I had a 1st gen 'proper 4x4' Kia Sportage that I took up Helderberg 4x4 a couple of times) - the biggest advantage of having a smaller 4x4 (apart from the obvious being lighter and really climbing well) is that I found the narrower track of the vehicle giving you quite an advantage when it comes to some of the obstacles. The bigger 4x4's all track basically the same width and therefor keep on digging the 'cross-axle ditches and ruts' deeper as they kick their way through it.
    On the Sportage I chose the shallower of the two tracks for the one side's wheels to go into and then the other would track right next to the deeper rut, causing the 'cross axle flex' to not even be close to what the bigger guys had to contend with.
    Also on some of these obstacles a bigger vehicle would fill the width of the road completely, giving no 'wiggle room' for the driver.
    On the narrower vehicle you can choose a line that the bigger ones won't be able to.
    I always loved the Jimny and I think the new one is an awesome upgrade to the previous.
    I also love the fact that Suzuki don't think that they should 'skimp' on 4x4 features just because the vehicle is small.
    There really isn't any other small (proper) 4x4 vehicles available in the market and the Jimny fills that gap really well - from the SJ410 all the way through to the latest one.

    The fortuner on that obstacle just proves why I'm not the biggest fan of traction control...they work until they don't...I mean for people who barely go through such obstacles, by all means traction control is more than sufficient, but for me a 4x4 enthusiast, getting stuck like this would bruise my ego so bad, especially knowing that their are after market diff locks that can prevent all that...; anyway goes to show how the JIMNEY's weight and overall silhouette make even the toughest obstacles possible even with just factory traction control. :)

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому

      Well that fortuner was equipped with a rear locking diff, I think it’s more a situation of not having enough wheel travel to get enough traction for the weight. But I get what you’re saying, that’s why I sold my Amarok and moved to a proper off-roader.

      @@RoamOverlanding An Amarok is also a proper off-roader though? The Jimny is a great off roader, but it only has a tiny petrol engine , that needs to be revved. The 2.0 manual Amarok has the lowest low- range ratio out of all the local bakkies, and it has a good traction control system and a locking rear diff. I would bet that an Amarok will go further than a Jimny on many courses. We completed Helderberg in our Series III Land Rover and Colt Rodeo without any problems.

    Does that suzuki have a lift? Factory ground clearance of 8.6'' seems really low.

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому

      It has no lift kit, however the tyres raise the vehicle by 0.3” just remember that that is the ground clearance on the Diff, and the vehicle has solid axles front and back, so correct positioning of your tyres can raise that ground clearance immensely in comparison to a Independent suspension vehicle. The vehicle also has really good break over and clearance angles, again it just helps you not need that much clearance. It’s an interesting combination of things, but it works really well.

    How does the load on the roof affect the dynamic of the vehicle? What kind of roof loading would you consider as safe for travelling unsealed roads, not heavy offroading?

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому

      That will depend on you, you will immediately feel the vehicle becomes less agile and too heavy. While cornering and brakingthe vehicle will lean more too.. you will need to test what you’re comfortable with, as your speeds will certainly have to decrease if you load up the roof.
