Ore wins games. Without ore you lack the ability to reach the timing for exponential growth, you lack options, and will surely find yourself outpaced in the late game. Two points or more of ore should always be a high priority in 95% of scenarios. This is amplified when you are playing on a low ore board. Everyone needs ore, and the best spots will go fast.
In this game, not only is ore scarce but it is also bundled together. This usually means the first and second player will secure the best ore with solid resource synergies lined up. To pass up these opportunities is to throw the game. Orange took the high production 10-5-9 location but had no ore and had gone first. By the time he gets to place his second settlement, he has nowhere to get ore or anything to synergize with his high production placement. Two other inferior production locations existed and they would have been better choices as they each included ore and future synergies for a second settlement. Thus, high production resource tiles are not always the correct choice, sometimes, the low resource is the only choice to make.
For this game, the ore allowed flexible options through the use of development cards. To lack this ore and not get development cards would make the game impossible to win. Ore allows you to get the final victory points you need to close out the game. It also highlights how important dev cards are when you go for longest road.
The series Journey to 1500 ELO is my attempt at sharing interesting games I come across as I learn more about Catan. 1500 ELO isn't really attainable in the current matchmaking system but it is a fun goal to have as one improves!

I hope you keep making Catan content. Enjoying the series
Yeah me too :)
At 26:00 that was a very bad trade for you. Yes you can build two roads but you have to realise how scarce your ore is and you really need that for cities and dev cards
Interesting! Thanks for the feedback.
Love these videos! Hope to see you start putting them out again
You kept blocking greys 8 clay even though he had the log port and an 8 log as well. Would have blocked that instead.
Sad you didnt make more catan content
At around 35 min. grey was dead and orange wouldve been the biggest threat for me considdering the wheat port with 3 hexes of wheat as well as already having played 2 knights. Guess he wasnt lucky with the dice rolls this game so it wasnt a tough contest in the end for you.
Red was really screwed this game, he literally had 0 settlement spots because of the weird placements
Build on the Robber hex haha
red also screwed up her first placements by going for double ore and sheep instead of 2x clay and wheat..
I think the fact that 10s didn’t get rolled made you win that much more certain. Both orange and red were banking on those for cities. However, well played.
thanks for the content!
I feel like you had to value cities a bit more in this game. You can’t win without them and you kept getting rid of city cards when you could have held on.
im confused. can you clearify when diversed numbers are better, or when combined numbers are better.? niuce vid :)
in the beginning you said that generally it is better to put your road towards the desert or coast. I don’t understand why this would be the best option?
I think you're the only one who didn't screw up their starting settlement. You could argue grey did nothing wrong, the 3/8/10 would've been stronger and he should've pointed up. Red just idk (double 3/4/8 poiting to brick and 3:1 ports would've been much much stronger) and orange wasted the 3/6/11 pointing up, which would've given them winning chances still
Also you had the game won from early on but let's say the others randomly had way better positions, I think towards 25:00 ish you made a mistake in what you were thinking. Your immediate priority should've been to city the 5/6/11. I mean, you already couldn't lose at that point, but still.
Interesting, I have a completely different take on the placements, but the eventual outcome doesn't support mine much! I couldn't believe the 9/10/11 was taken so late. That spot went straight to the top of my shortlist for being the strongest ore and sheep. With that out of the way, the wheat options of 6, 10, and 3/4 seemed plentiful enough to be confident of getting a supporting wheat tile with a nearby port. If 9/10/11 had been the second pick, it's hard to say how different the rest of the placements would have been, but I suppose red ended up in a situation I would have been reasonably content with, and that didn't go so well for them!
@@julianpbc1 9, 10, 11 was like the worst option for red, grey and orange competing at the bottom and literally no space to build at 9, 10, 11
25:50 really inefficient imo, holding for a city should be your main concern. especially on a low ore board
When you had the monopoly and 8 wheat, you could have made lots of bad trades involving wheat, and then used your monopoly to get it all back. It seems like you never even considered this option so I figured I'd point it out
Dirty monopoly trick 😋
12:00 i dont understand why would u trade ore away its very expensive in this board.
Is there a competitive scene for Catan online? How does one get involved?
Why didn't orang second pick the 3wheat - 11sheep - 6wheat?
Good point haha
how good its consider 1500 elo?
Are you still on your Journey to 1500ELO?

omg, red was already banned from the game from the start on xD
How do you know the order at the start
Works left to right from first pick, a little placing settlement icon pops up under the first picks name so you can see
Thanks for taking the time to reply my man
hey man i like the content, but i can't listen to someone call brick clay for 45 minutes
What about calling wheat hay??
Stopsay they for one person, thats stupid!

you made so many mistakes, you couldve had 2 cities
how do you play on randomized boards? When I play on Steam, it’s the same board every time.
