- In this weeks episode of Muscle Garage we threw it back to the 60's with this rare factory 348 black Chevy Impala.
Initially planned to be an average cruiser to throw the kids and the dog in, quickly snowballed into a major revamp.

Always loved the Chevy 348 engine. I owned, back in 1964, a 1959 Chevy Impala. It had the stock 250 horse 348 engine, with a Turboglide transmission. The stock engine was rebuilt from parts of a 1961, 350 horse 348 engine and from the Chevy dealer. A 4 speed transmission, with a factory set of 3.70 rear gears were added to the 1959 Impala. It was the most awesome Chevy sleeper ever that I owned. What an awesome car to the unsuspecting muscle cars of 1966. Oh how I wished I could have stored that car away for the future. Uncle Sam didn't let me, Those 348's were sleepers of the day.

My uncles first car was a brand new 57' Chevy, his second new car was a 1960 Chevy Impala in white.
Lord!....the memories! I was eighteen in September of 1959 when I first saw the new 1960 Impala and fell in love ! I was lucky enough to have a parent who understood, and had the means to purchase one......Mine was also black, with a 250 horse 348 and three on the tree......I'm 81 now and have this recurring dream about 4 or 5 times per year still.......
I am coming out of the theater with my girl and realize that I can't remember where I parked my car! I search and search but can't find it. Then i wake up!
Truth is, I traded it in on a 1968 Mustang......but I regretted it almost immediately and went back to the dealer the next day to buy it back......Alas, some 16 year old kid had just driven it out the dealership and I never saw it again.

My first car, a 1960 Impala with a 348. I bought it in 1973 for $225.
Dang, I love it. I had a 61 Biscayne for 4 years. The guy that owned it before me put a 327 out of a Vette in it, but left the 3 on the tree. My Brother in Law and I put a 4 spd in it then a turbo 350. Your 60 is a tough mother!

The tail panel and lights look like a later model, 64 my guess and a vast improvement.

Glad to see that another Chevy guy knows those tail lights, I'm a die hard Chevy guy myself yet I got a reply from someone insisting that the lights were original, he obviously doesn't know chevy's as much as he thinks he does. 👍
@@truckerray9634 Yea I'm a Bowtie freak I own 7 of them 64,65,67,99,03,07,& a 08 . Here is a really good triva ???? for Chevrolet people what was the 1st Chevy to have bucket seats in them standard & not being a sports car ? The answer is a 1960 & a 1/2 Corvair Monza sport coupe & the full size Chevrolet would not see them till 1962 in the Impala SS & the Nova SS would see them when they where introduced in 1963 ! The Corvette doesn't count because it's a sports car. You'll be surprised how many get this wrong or don't know & thanks for the compliment.

I Like the original torpedo lights for this car better personally but it’s still beautiful I used to have a 63SS so I spotted those lights right away

Well you are still wrong my friend, they may have been on the car when he got it, but they are not original. Those are definitely 63 tail lights. I'm 71 years old and a die hard Chevy guy, and I assure you that those are not original. I had a 60 and we put 63 lights on it when I customized it in 1969. It's just something we liked to do back in the day. Just like the guys that used to put 59 caddilac tail lights on different cars.

cars are like wypin your butt on a hoola hoop...there is just no end to it.....but ya gotta lovem. In 1958 my dad bought a new 58 Ford 2dr htop ...352...yellow and white. Our neighbor at the time was a salesmen for the local Chev dealer. This was 1958 and I was 8 then. One day he brought home a 58 chev 2 door htop,,,,White with red interior, 348....it was stunning to say the least. I looked at that Chev and I thought WTF dad were you thinking buying that Ford?. Actually that kind of language was not in my vocabulary at that time. I curranty have a 66 Mustang money pitt. But I like all cars....all makes. The 58 and 59 Chevs were amazing looking cars. It surprises me that after all the re tooling for the 58 they only ran that style one year. Must have cost a fortune to not use that re toolling of the dies for a few years.
Beautiful photos of thos ole winged warriors! I’m not a chevy guy but if I had my druthers, I’d have a 58 bel air coupe, white with blue interior, or a 60-61 same color combo. Just didn’t like the 59 for some reason. This one you have is a great ride, good to see her on the road! Keep her up and many happy wishes for many happy miles!
I agree I never cared for the 59 either, they were just ugly. I have owned several 60 Impalas over the years. I think it is the best looking car GM ever made. The 4-door flat top was my favorite. Wish i had another, but with the market like it is nowadays, even projects are just getting out of reach for the average guy.
I thought that '60 Chevy is the right-handed drive version. I see that it's not. It looks great either way. Greetings from the U.S.

I've been able to upgrade from a 63 impala to a 63 SS impala. I didn't thing there was a big difference until I owned one. I was just happy to own an impala. Now I can't go back. Obviously the next step up is the convertible.

How much was the car lowered compared to the original setup? Working on an 60 Impala right now and I love your car!
My only comment about this car is I think back in 1960 these Impalas were meant to look elegant. It was a white wall tire car and I dont think that it was necessarily meant to be turned into a hot rod. Your car looks great, but I like the elegant white wall tire look better.
