59 the most underrated 50’s Chevy. The metal work for the wings and taillights section was one of the most complex designs to manufacture, so much done by hand.

Thank you so much Lou, for today's feature on THIS particular '59 Impala convertible! It's stunning, and hasn't been ruined with the hideous continental kit, fender skirts and other junk I see on so many '57 Chevy convertibles, unfortunately. I really wish things like that were never options. Gloria, you look very much like another favorite of mine, Michelle Phillips!

When this car came out, I was 14. It was quite an eye catcher at the time. Almost as much as a Cadillac. No one had ever seen the sculpted wings before. It was even more dramatic than the 1958. A beautiful time capsule of that wonderful year for automobiles! My folks had just bought a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville Vista Dome flatop 4 door hardtop. Another beautiful car by GM with it's Wide Track, split grill, and twin fins above each tail light. It was an amazing time to grow up. Especially if you were a teenage male !

@@martinedwards4522 Without question. I was born in '57, and (doing my homework) found out that was the year this car (and all the '59 GM's) were designed!

Lou great job on the story. How amazing that she has managed to keep this car for so many years. When people run into these 58-60 Impalas one of the first things they ask the owner "Does it have a 348?" This car does and the owner pointed out the hood flags that says it has a 348. I never knew this.

Now that's a beautiful car Lou! The 1959 Chevrolet is my very favorite car from that era! This lady has taken excellent care of that Impala convertible. That car is in pristine condition with a healthy sounding 348 big block V8 engine. She is spot-on correct whenever it comes to the hood emblem. The V with the crossed racing flags means it is equipped with the big block 348 engine, the V without flags means that it is equipped with the small block 283 engine, and no V means that it is equipped with the 235 inline 6-cylinder engine. I happen to notice that it is still equipped with the original generator/power steering pump combo that was discontinued after the 1959 model year. The interior is perfect, and that original ermine white paint job still looks awesome! I can tell that this is Gloria's prized possession, and it definitely shows!

As for this great car of my childhood, one remark to your well-said points, is to consider for the 283 V8 the optional Rochester Fuel Injection, offered by Chevrolet since 1957, then with 283 HP, and 290 HP for 1959. But due to the amount of issues occurred, it is said that only 26 of all 1959 big Chevies were so equipped, from around 1,500 in 1957 and less than 600 in 1958. Therefore the 348 was more reliable with the traditional carburetor and so was prized with the racing flags. In addition, there was a case of incompatibility of the RFI with automatic transmissions, which were deleted for manual ones (3-speed in 57&58, 4-speed in 1959) in the list of optionals.

¡Saludos cordiales, Lou!

When I was a little boy ( circa mid '60's ) , my Uncle drove a '59 El Camino, and for some reason, I thought those vintage cat-eye tail lights were scary looking and the big cat would come alive. An amazing car with an amazing story to go with it. I love to see people still have something they got a long time ago and still have it and use it many years later, and take great care of it and keep it in beautiful shape like Gloria has down with her Impala. You just don't see that much in this day and age . What awesome graduation gift too, I would've been thrilled to get a car like this for a graduation gift or anytime. Great video Lou!

What a SWEET 59 and it's story! I love it. I am a 59 Chevy nut also. I have a 59 Bel Air sedan I purchased in 1978 for $75 with 58,000 original miles. It has over 200,000 miles now and I still drive it often. Mine has the 348 also, but mine has a three on the tree.
One thing I did notice, was her starter solenoid click a few times before it cranked, a very common problem on GM cars in that era. A new solenoid will correct that problem, plus a little lube on all the hinges and latches would elevate the creaking when opening the doors, trunk and hood.
Great video, enjoyed it so much I saved it to my favorites.

Beautiful example and a great story. I like the contrast of the bright sky blue interior and the white paint. It's so hard to imagine back in the 70's, when I was a kid getting into classic cars, that the '58 and '59 Chevy's were criticized and shunned by car guys! Now those year Chevy's often surpass the Tri-Fives in value!

My uncle in Bridgeport, WV, had a 59 Chevy in white, though it might have been a biscayne. He called it his “sports car,” had 3 on the tree manual transmission, and no options, as best I remember. This was a long time ago, in the 60s. I think he kept it 11-12 years. It was his second car.

    Aloha from Down-Under Lou, 🤙🏼
I find it rather amusing how IMPALA is often pronounced differently in different parts of America,
    like Im-pella.
And as we all know, that the impala is a type of African antelope, where they pronoun it im-parla.
Which is how people pronounce it throughout Europe, Africa, and Australasia.

When I was a little Fella there were still a few of these running around on the roads, rare as Hen's teeth nowadays, the last time that I laid eyes on one was back in 1999, a quarter of a century ago.
It was a standard 4 door Biscayne saloon.
The Citroen 2CV and this car compete with one another in terms of ugliness and yet that is what I find so endearing about them.
