- Foundational aspects of ridge cap installation are covered in this "How to Install Ridge Cap" video. This is a perfect video for a do-it-yourself homeowner and roof installer alike. One of the complicated areas while installing a ridge cap is where the ridge shingles terminate into "slope C" above two valleys. In this video we will illustrate how to do that plus much more.

Great Videos! This was just what I was looking for. Getting ready to shingle a mini barn shed for my Deere. Was unsure of terminating the ridge cap but now I know. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I just had 20 feet of ridge cap blow off my roof in a tornado. I installed the roof myself 5 years ago; that being my first ever roofing project (owens corning duration). What you showed certainly was not my nailing schedule. I put one on each side like my shop teacher showed me back in '91. And the whole piece lifted off pulling the shingle thru the nail and depositing the shingles in the front yard in one piece. ill be on the roof saturday learning my lesson
These are really, really tightly put together roof shingles!!!
Wish all these wannabe Floridian roofers learn from this video!!!
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing.
I just saw this video and was worried I did my ridge cap wrong before, but I did it the same way in video what a relief.
Wow these guys do Great work!
Great video on ridge cap. I have a section of roof that is part of an A-frame with a very steep angle and wanted to know what you would recommend for a shingle (or other type of cover). I think it is 120deg angle and roughly 40ft long. The current shingle is about 18 years old and they used a standard shingle that has held up fine, but not ideal. Thanks again for your help.
exactly what i was looking for
When laying a hip shingle in the precipice of 2 conjoining ridges, do you put an extra nail in that hip shingle and all hip shingles like that, or how would i go about securing those hip shingles correctly?
So you guys add 4 nails per shingle .....my question is this is for high wind now i live in michigan would this apply to my ridge cap here? Or if not would it be added protection of blowing winds keeping the shingle secure? Im new to this and i like that your company does this thank you for thia video
Beautiful job. 👍
What would you sugest sence i live in florida
Awesome video can you upload some closeup footage of mail placement for all the gusts that miss the doubled par of a shingle. Tired of picking shingles off the ground in nd. Or coming on jobs with nails through the face
I really haven't seen a video yet that tells me how to go from ride cap into a T intersection of another ridge cap . Figure it on my own try to
How far up do you take the shingle over the roof point, should it go over to the other side with it or cut it at the line ?
I watched there is a debate over this with some saying it will raise the caping.
How do I see how to end the 2 sides so the roof is ready to do the ridge cap??
As a new roofing project manager, are there any tips that you can recommend?
Is there a way to make your first ridge cap shingle hug the peak ridge? The starting shingle is at the front of the house on a peak.
Could you cut architectural shingles into ridge cap shingles?
Love the improper use of fall protection
They just getting the visual encase OSHA pops by....lol. I used to work metal building construction. A lot of guys use to just make a show like that thinking they wouldn't get busted.
Shut up and learn the techniques
Doesn't the drone drop a couple of retractable laynards just before a slip or fall?
The video is about installing ridge cap, it's not a safety course. You should already know your safety precautions you dipshit.
You would think at the very least they'd put it on for the camera
Wow three years ago and this is a good quality video what is it 4K or is it just my iPhone 11. Most videos on UA-cam don’t look this good nope.
I have never done a roof before, but wouldn't it be better to cap the short ridge before shingling the main slope to keep from having to lift and nail under the shingles (near the end of video)?
Clean finish
Fine job Gentlemen!
Trying to figure how to do the ridge cap that has a ridge end dying in the middle of the the field .
5:30 Finishing the end of the ridge cap
I'm doing a small shed. Where my shingles meet at the ridge there is two inches on each side where you can still see the plywood. Should I just cover with the ridge cap? In the video it looks like they folded another row of shingles over and then put the ridge cap over that.
You may want to install a strip of ice and water shield over the ridge before installing the ridge cap. We will generally overlap one of the slopes of shingles over the ridge to provide additional protection in the event of a hailstorm or bad weather.
Do you have to 45 the nail end
Why do some shingles get 4 roof nails, others get 3 or just 2?
JoeB
Because thats how the roofer did it that day. I might sound like an ass, but thats the truth.
6:12 I'm curious what do you do with the expose nails of that last shingle placement? Do you leave it or calk with something?
My company just uses Rubber Gasket nails.
blackjack, baby. just squeeze some tube tar on that nail head and that's it.
What's the diff between bullnose rigecaps versus shingle rigecap
Are the nails penetrating the shingle underneath, so each shingle has two rows of nails?
No, the guy is nailing on the wrong side of the tar line. It will be susceptible to high winds.
11:15 Legend has it that he is still trying to slide-in that cap shingle to this day.
doing a barn can you send a video on that
Is it wise to install a roll a of metal tin underneath the ridge cap shingles to have added leak proofing?
I live in South Miami, Fla.
it's not necessary but it also wouldn't hurt if you can afford it
Any reason why you guy are not trying to nail through the lower shingle along the ridge? Putting the 4 nails in is great, but if you hit the shingle below wouldn't it be better?
Thanks for your feedback. It certainly wouldn't hurt to add extra nails.
Im a visual learner. What state do you do roofing?
Watch beginning to end he says he's in Colorado
is it really necessary to have a ridge cap on a house?
Haunted In PA yes
Never understood layered layered ridge capping, but it seems to work. My issue is, shingles rely on slope to shed water, but this is a horizontal surface and any wind is going to blow underneath the cap. I'm not saying anything is wrong with the job, but I wouldn't mind some feedback
Just guessing, I don't know for sure. But, I bet you are supposed to run the lap edge so it is facing away from prevailing wind? Curious, what do you suggest? Not being a smarty-pants, I really want to know some suggestions. I am replacing my own roof ridge. That is why I am here. I'm guessing there is a better way. Most houses in my area seem to use this shingle ridge method. A solid ridge piece (aluminum, rubber, or vinyl) seems like it might be better. The shingle ridge is likely just done for aesthetics to look consistent with the rest of the roof. I don't care about that crap.... I just don't want the roof to leak.
if the shingle is flat, wind can get underneath it. if it is curved, it's naturally MUCH stiffer against wind lifting it
take a piece of paper and curve it down then try to lift up the front edge. take another flat piece and try and lift the front edge
you will notice a huge difference
thanks
At the edge where you terminated how would that protect from water leakage? those nails were bare
Because a drop of water expands it will eventually ruin the gable right?
A tar seal is used to help prevent/reduce water exposure, and ensure the cap is seated securely against the elements.
@@roberthazelton8824 Thank you I was wondering the same thing!
Thank you I wondered the same thing!
Think the camera should have been closer to the action for greater effect.
Wish camera shot would have been closer. I know would have been hard with a drone.
Oyes me gustaría aver mirado cómo cómo se isieron esos valley’s porque a mi me isieron un cochinero y ahora quiero aserlo yo
great video...feel for his back ...
I had about 7 ridge cap shingles blow off in the hurricane. Any issues reusing those shingles?
Hello Brusier, sorry that you were impacted by the hurricane. The ridge cap shingles can be be reused, however you will need to apply several quarter size dabs of plastic cement. The old sealant will not reactivate. The new plastic cement will bond the ridge cap together.
Integrity Roofing and Painting is that plastic cement like for building models or rubber cement?
It is roofing plastic cement. You can purchase what you need from a local building supplier or Home Depot. Old school roofers will call it roofing tar.
Integrity Roofing and Painting thanks.
Hello. I am not a construction guy, but watching what's going on next door is worrying. My neighbors have a new build going on. It's been raining. The inside of the house looks like a lake. The roofing plywood (Weyerhaueser Gold) is soaked. The black roofing paper is wet and wrinkled. When the guy works, tiles are going down on top of wet paper. No edge tiling is being used at all. It's not my project and I should just probably butt out, but I feel my young neighbors are not getting the best job for the money. Is there an email address where I could send a few pics? If you can confirm my suspicions, then at least I can warn them. Thanks.
Hello David, you might consider contacting your neighbor and than the building department.
That's what I thought, but the roof is completed tiled over wet paper. Maybe will dry out towards the underside like the builder said. At least the flooring is drying out now that no rain is falling on it.
I would be less concerned by the moisture and much more concerned with the lack of starter shingles.
Teamwork
I have a roof that is all in good condition except the ridge cap. Can just the ridge cap be replaced, so I don't have to redo the whole roof?
Are the nails placed on either side of the tar strip?
Thank you for asking about the placement of nails. The ridge cap shingles need to be installed per manufacturers installation instructions. Locate the nails as described on the shingle package.
Aren't you supposed to hit the tar strip with the nail? I heard that's where the nail should go as it's stronger for windy conditions it'll hold better and it also acts as an adhesive for the shingle above it.
NO, you're actually supposed to go bellow the tar line because then it will also penetrate the shingle below, effectively doubling your fastener count per shingle. Nailing in or above the tar line is weaker and will void warranty. The guy in the video was nailing on the wrong side of the tar line.
stop talking out of your ass. Nail just above the tar line, and overlap the next row so its 1/4-1/2in past the tar line.
@@scumbaggo every roof where I've seen singles blown off were nailed above the line.. theirs not enough meat there
Great. The best crew doesn't even tie off. When having the Harness on.
Lmao where would you anchor your safety rope on an otherwise finished roof? Once the shingles are to the peak you can’t drive anchor screws through it. Also that looks to be an 8-10 pitch which is more than walkable with asphalt on it. Perhaps critiquing a job people should know more about what they are pointing out the wrongs in.
It would have been nice to see a little bit more of a close up to see what you were doing. Aerial video doesn't really do much for me
Ok
I'm just hoping these are one and half inch nails!
and why not screwdriving them nails instead to make it even 200 mile winds warranty😂
Safety rope sitting there unused... even when they're 6 inches from the edge of the roof. Yep.. must be "professionals"....
why do you clowns even bother with the fall protection??!!
Can't believe i just watched the guy shoot four nails into that last cap. No excuse for exposed nails. Just bull it down with roof cement.
nail it, then tube tar the exposed head. youre an idiot if youre worried about someone seeing 2 nails on the ridge.
GAF seal a ridge instructions literally tell you to nail on the wrong side of the tar strip. It’s ridiculous.
guy # 1 falls, then system arrest saves him. guy # 2 falls, an ambulance comes, insurance claims he died without proper PPE use. edit: Now I realize that none of them is attached to the roof. got confused by the air hose....lol
Not sure why this video was recommended or why the guys using harness but not connecting them to anything .....either way I watched the whole video
Just wonderful, been searching for "how to build a truss for a shed" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Beybigail Nonpareil Breakthrough - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a smashing exclusive guide for discovering how to create better sheds and improve your woodworking without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy got excellent success with it.
If you had to stick around for more than 15 seconds, get the fuck off the roof.
BIG TIME
Nice but there is about 2 minutes of content. Most of the video the installer is doing the same thing repeatedly.
Can I get away without buying ridge cap? Say... Cut my own out of the extra shingles?
No issue with cutting your own, as long as theyre not architectural shingles. just cut your extra 3tab into 3rds and youre good to go.
Blah blah blah blah in this video you will see a video of some visual aids of roofing and during this video you will see some video and visual and keep in mind I will be providing a narration and blah blah blah
MOST ANNOYING VOMITOUS AD MUSIC EXTANT!
To much blabla
