We had to shingle our old barn and didn’t know what to do with the ridge cap that Home Depot sold us. I looked and found your video, you are amazing! Short and to the point. We figured out how to cut the shingles and they went on like a gem. Thanks for sharing your know how - I don’t think my husband and I would have been able to figure it out. My husband is 70 so he was pretty proud of his roof! Thanks again. ♥️👍🏻♥️🔨🔨 Shar from Gillette, Wyoming.
I watched a master carpenter cover the last end cap nails with tar, then rubbed two colored pieces of a shingle together to get a small pile of colored particles, then sprinkled them over the tar-covered nails and pressed them in.... totally blends in with the cap -- you never see the nails. I thought that was soooo cool! :)
The only problem with this(not saying it's bad) is over time you have points where water can eventually seep in. If u were to dip or cover the nails in caulk or sealant then do the tar and color match then most definitely a good idea but I'd say it be a bit time consuming. We know everyone is in a hurry to get the roof done
Dude, I’ve i stalled roofs all my life in my personal homes. Your series of videos taught me things I didn’t even think of all those years!!!! Great job.
Dude thank you for explaining how you overlap the ridge with the roof shingles instead of cutting them off! I have been on google and youtube for an hour trying to see if i am supposed to cut off the top of my shingles or just lap it over to the other side and now i finally have my answer! With your help, my shed roof is looking pretty damn good and im confident it will hold.. i used to do siding and windows but never really did any roofing so your videos really helped!
Yes! I don't know why "professionals" cut the tops off and toss them. Why not overlap both shingles when they get to the ridge. It gives you 2 layers of shingle before you even install the ridge cap which then gives you 2 more layers. The ridge is where failures occur first!
I had this same question! I still don't know if you need both sides to overlap or not. I just finished one side and cut off the shingles at the peak, so no overlap. I didn't think about researching that until afterwards 😔 I will probably have just enough shingles to finish my other side - my question is, should I continue with the other side and have that side overlap the peak to the other side or should I remove the shingles I have on the first side at the peak and replace so it overlaps there and then the other side overlaps over those too? Hopefully good to just keep what I have and overlap on one side, but always want to do it right.
You Rock! I’m putting shingles on a shed this week. I’ve watch two of your videos and picked up a couple of your tips that I wouldn’t have done on my own. Thanks! UA-cam Rocks DIY.
Thanks! As an average homeowner with no skills, talent, or experience, seeing how you said to orient the caps so the prevailing winds don’t blow them up is really helpful. Pretty cool that you got TWO tar lines at the end. I’m sure you really are much better than average!

Man, did a shed in the last couple months - ive done shingling before a few times but its been awhile, followed every video youve made, no other sources i found were as clear, simple, and easy to follow - thanks for all your help brother!
Thank you man.. ive been roofing a shed on your videos.. youre straight to the point and full of knowledge. Ill be watching these again on my next job!! Lol
Me too. I'm actually sitting on top of my shed right now wondering what to do with the Ridge capping. Very handy to see what the pros do. QUESTION: What kind of hooked knife are you using? I've been using one of the Olfa extendable break-off blade knives, but my shingle slicing isn't nearly as easy as you make it look. Of course, that's probably all know-how on account of you being in the trade, and I'll just have to suck it up. But if the kind of knife being used helps much, please do tell. Thanks. Much appreciated! Oh, almost forgot: is the Lake Street Tavern still a place to go? Back in the 80's, it was a decent place for a pint or three?
@@eejuice the snap off blades are flexible and that would be the reason you are struggling. We use primeline or Stanley hook titanium hook blade that fit in most standard knifes. Approx $5 per pack of 5. One blade should lay 1 full roof unless it’s cold then they do tend to break more often

We had a roofer come to our home and I asked him to do our guest house. I wanted to see what kind of work he did. We had a bigger job to do. But he never put on the ridge cap. So now I am going to have to climb up on the roof and do it myself. I can handle a hammer just as good as anyone. Not afraid to nail. Just needed to see how it's done. Thank you for the video
Wonderful video - super helpful to align shingles so they are not caught in wind. I like to wrap the top of last row of shingles over the cap for protections also looks smoother especially if there is a severe pitch.
Great video describing how YOU do it versus others that were trained by less knowledgeable persons. First time I heard about “prevailing wind” direction so that makes sense on a rental I am doing myself. The only thing I would add: Go down to the driveway and get an idea if you’re tracking straight on the ridge cap. I see high $$$$ Owens shingles shimmering beautifully in the sun, and then the ridge cap shingles look like the ruffle shirt Napoleon Dynamite wore

Nice tip on cutting the 1st & 2nd to last ridge shingles as starter shingles... It might also be a good idea to put a bit of a tar strip under the 1st top ridge shingle & final ridge shingle to help the 2 tar strips bond better. That's how Owning Corning starter & 1st row of shingles mate/lock up for the strongest bond.
Just good enough to do a good job that will last. The hardest part of your clear instructions was confirming the prevailing wind and comparing with direction of our high wind storms. The other tips were terrific. Going out to finish the cap. Cheers, Seaminus

About the only time we cut the top back is for ridge vent, lapping 1 side will be fine because it’s getting capped over anyways..
