Can I use ice and water shield over a 100 sqft flat roof with out base underlayment sheet? Then just put torch down after or shingles or does it need base underlayment
I worked for a roofing contractor almost 30 years ago. We used Grace Ice and Water Shield. Just recently did a small roof for a friend using all GAF products. The ice and water shield from them was so much more forgiving then I remember the Grace to be. Once the Grace hit the deck without backing, that was it.
Excellent detail along the dormer wall flashing (it was the incorrect flashing) installed by the builder, but it can be corrected w/o having to dig into the stucco, using the exact method you described. Details, it's all about the details when flashing all penetrations on the roof, there is no one size fits all, each penetration can be unique depending on multiple factors, take your time, use the correct flashing products for each one, and install them correctly. It only takes a little extra time and little more money/products to do it right. That roof will not leak.
Grace Ice and Water has a paper back and it sticks like crazy. If you let that paper tear you are in trouble as you get one chance to stick it, no do overs. It doesn't require or need tacks. You set the beginning and you better be right if you are running a sixty foot roll. The nice thing is it sticks better than any I have seen in forty degree weather or even a bit lower.
brand new to this - what kind of hammer and nails are you using? Also, can you install it over a single layer of 20 year old shingles before putting on a second layer of shingles?
* If you don't you run the risk of your shingles getting glued to the ice and water barrier. You'll have a heck of a time removing the old shingles when you reshingle your roof. IMO.
My " thing " as a carpenter is the roof ridge is overloaded with shingles in this video. $0.50 Installment and explanation of underlayment and flashing is done right !
Why isn't the flashing removed and then place ice and water shield 6 inches up the chimney and side wall etc... put flashing back in place with new flashing?
@@BrettTracyRealtor had to cut EIFS or stucco before to correctly install I&W. We then repaired the wall or matching metal counter flashing to cover the tins. Yes that is good business. Also I&W should never be on top of the underlayment
@@johnlieb1 Per GAF, the old flashing is to be removed and the ice and water shield has to be installed at least 5" up. What your workers did in this video creates an area for water to penetrate and get stuck.
Ive used this over the entire deck, glad I did because I wound up with defective 35 year certainteed shingles that started failing in 6, big class-action suit, the Tamko moisture guard I used kep it from leaking despite exposed nails and tabs that lost all their granules everywhere the sun hit.

We had ice and water shield installed during 50 degree day. Then it rained and water leaked through at OSB seams. Do you think it's an ice and water shield issue? Did it not adhere? Can it re adhere on some warmer days? Or does it have to be replaced?
If you don't put underlayment on TOP of the ice and water and under the shingles and instead put the shingles directly down on the I&W shield you will not be able to remove shingles for replacement to fix a leaky or damaged roof. And you may end up having to rip off the old shingles complete with the plywood sheathing for the next roof at a large cost for a completely new plywood sheathing to put the next roof on.
@@Jimmy_Cavallo It's a tar product. It will bond to whatever roofing product you put on top when it heats up on hot days. A layer of tar paper between the ice shield and roofing will make your roof maintainable with minimal cost and effort.

I’ve heard there are good better and best in ice and water shielding quality. Can you recommend which products to use or which to avoid? Also what fasteners to use? Thx
It's going to depend on the suppliers that are available in your region also most company's won't warranty the product if the underlayment comes from a different company for example here we have iko and BP products if I install BP shingles the underlayment must also be from BP or they can viod the warranty.. tbh getting any company to pay out on that warranty is next to impossible they will always blame it on workmanship but that's usually how it goes. Just don't be a pennie pincher, not saying to buy the most expensive product but you pay for what you get so lol
I like that you’re using roofing nails 😉. If it tears the ice-water shield then you should not be using that cheap stuff. Your workmanship is pretty good. The piece you put behind the valley why not just put it perpendicular with the wall Of the chimney. Faster and easier then you don’t have to put that little piece in the corner.
I understand that it cannot have any wrinkles because then it would allow water to pass under membrane. That the membrane depends on full contact for a water seal. So installation must be perfect of there is no warranty. Is that correct?
If you happen to spot a wrinkle after you already got the ice and water on, just push it down and it will be fine. If it's a bigger wrinkle, make a small cut into it horizontally and let the excess (the wrinkle will make some excess) lay overtop of the i&w next to the cut. Once heat gets to it, it will seal it around the protrusion.
Roofing contractor in Oregon here. Being costly would be about the only downside to ice and water on the entire roof surface. If you are in an area that experiences a lot of snow, I'd say go for it if you arent too concerned on the price. If you are in an area that doesnt experience a ton of snow, then Id recommend doing the entire outside perimeter then doing the rest with a hybrid synthetic underlayment, such as Safeguard 30 Hybrid synthetic underlayment. Joseph Smith - I have a stiletto framing hammer that has one, but it's magnet is set too deep for the nail length on the cap nails. Will have to look for a shingling hammer with the nail starter... Thanks!
Right over the OSB? Will that come up in 25 years for replacement? Did they really need to stapple? The staples are just to hold it in place during installation? I'd like to use this in a low slope flat single pitch roof in Florida (no Snow).
Yes it works best when it's right over the osb sheeting. Yes you should use some type of faster to hold it down unless its a super hot day out and it's already sticking to the roof when you start, but it doesn't hurt to add staples/nails either way. One thing to add is if it's super hot out and you step on the top quarter of the i&w without some sort of fastener, it may start to slide out if you stand in that spot for more than a few seconds. So staples help with that issue. If your roof is less than a 4/12 you should be looking at some sort of single ply/2 ply torch on roofing system. You shouldn't put shingles on a roof lesser than a 4/12 pitch, especially in flordia
Just do the same as displayed in the video when doing the layer by the eaves, but when you take the bottom plastic off, fold the lower half of the i &W towards the top, so it folds above and lays on the top part, pull it high enough so you can barely see the black underside of the top section of i&w and then peel the plastic off carefully. Try not to let it fold in on itself. Then from one side edge, slowly push the folded half down and gravity should cause it to unfold itself, you might just have to push it down a few times where it gets stuck. Also make sure to staple the top section before doing this by yourself.
Hopefully you left them in. I only install minimal fasteners because it sticks to the plywood once the sun hits it. Basically impossible to remove. The membrane seals around penetrations but will not seal if the fastener is removed
Ice and watershield is good but it's not bulletproof, I've had to do repairs on roofs with ice and water installed more than a few times. And if you know how to install flashing correctly, you don't need it around chimneys and walls. I know it's a good barrier but def not a necessity.
The peel and stick ive used is so loose grain.. i cant walk or even lay on my side on it without the grain coming off and then i slide. Sticks to shoes when wet making your next step on paper or ply feel like your on marbles.
Great job! but... PLEASE! Contractors! Install underlayment over I&W; otherwise shingles WILL adhere to I&W making OSB, I&W, and shingles 1 solid mass. I carry a heat gun in my truck for when repairs are needed where shingles are stuck to I&W
I get that it's going to be hard for the next roof replacement, but it's not really needed. Shingles shouldnt adhere completely to the ice and water if you're using the ice and water that has granuals on it. And you're able to lay ice and water overtop of another layer of ice and water, no reason to tear it off, if there's say two layers of ice and water already, you should be looking at replacing the whole roof with 3/8th sheeting anyways.
Integrity Roofing and Painting yes that's what i was wondering, if I cover the entire roof with an ice/water barrier do I still need felt paper. This is for a workshop so small roof. 1 roll of the water barrier would cover the entire roof.
Ricky B im reshingling my garage r now and my area requires 100% ice watershield so no i dnt put paper down b4 or after... the shingles go ontop of thie ice shield, it replaces the felt underlayment in my case and is code still.
What brand of ice shield is that ? I like the granules for traction and also the shingles won’t stick to it. We’re having a lot of problems ripping shingles off that were done with ice shield. Almost have to take the plywood off to do it right.
Death to Ice Shield Not sure what brand they are using but shingles will most certainly stick to it. About 4/5 roofs I do are a pain in the ass because of it. I suggest you put your felt down over the ice and water. The next roofer will be extremely thankful for it!
Hey buddy, Grace Ice & Water Shield is a protected trade Marked Name. You are not using Ice & Water Shield. You are using a self adhered underpayment that doesn’t stick.
After applying this to my eaves and valleys, do I roll the felt paper completely over it? Or do I just roll the felt out over the rest of the decking and stop where it meets the Ice and Water Shield Strip? If I stop where they meet, how much should the felt overlap, if at all? Thanks for the informative video!
Thanks for your reply. During new construction it is important to install IWS on the wall and roof slope, however during a re-roof it's not practical nor possible on most applications.
Integrity Roofing and Painting Im calling bullshit on that, here in Ohio that shit wouldnt fly you have to go up the wall with ice and water pull some siding if you have too or cut stucco and repair.
Thanks for your reply. If code did not require you to pull siding than the market would not accommodate the additional pricing for a contractor to perform this unnecessary step. Our code departments do not require that ice and water run up vertical abutments in Denver nor in Colorado Springs. However, in different areas the jurisdiction changes and if required than ice and water shield would be ran up the walls. Once again the building departments do not deem it necessary in our area to remove siding or cut stucco therefore we can't justify this to our clients. We live in a high dessert region with little precipitation and each building department will do what is best for the geographic region. When you have a lot of rain and a lot of snow the procedures will change such as in Ohio.
Integrity Roofing and Painting thats where we disagree I do reroofs for R.F.D. services new Franklin ohio and all we do is reroofs and it is company policy that we remove siding and flashing to do it right...we even grind out brickwork, stucco, and mortar to make it right.
We expect the unexpected, therefore we will add some nails. High winds and rain can come in quickly. Once we install some nails we don't have to wait for the ice and water shield to activate. The additional nails protect the property from water damage if the unexpected weather occurs.
They are nailing cause it doesn’t stick. Ice & Water Shield is a trade marked name this guy is violating. Ask for it by name Grace Ice & Water Shield by GCPAT.
you say you do need felt paper in addition so since I didn't see it under the ice/water shield it is then applied on top ? Also what is your recommendation for a reasonably priced ice/water shield. Will only be applying on the North and west sides of home and one strip. Thank you!
Synthetic underlayment or felt paper is installed on the balance of the roof surface where the IWS is not installed, however some building codes require synthetic to be installed over the IWS. While working in the Denver metro area and in the foot hills we have over 20 governing jurisdictions for building codes. Once you start working in Summit county the codes change drastically. If you work in Florida and in Miami Dade County the codes will be different. Be sure to install IWS and underlayment over local building codes.

Mexicans do all the hard work ✊🍺👏
If you don't go to school and study you have to do the hard work

Doesn't the plastic lock in moisture?
It's nice that they are wearing a safety harness... but no lanyards are attached. (?)
What is the brand of the material that you are using? Thanks
This Ice and water is a CertainTeed brand. Called WinterGuard.
just noticed that the guys have harnesses but not buckled in (@ 3:00)
rsuplido it’s like that all video

As a illegal alien I approve this message 😀 in others words we don’t give a shit about dying, anyway coronavirus is around the corner
You only need to actually clip your harness to the anchor if you notice the safety inspector showing up.
Do you still need felt paper if you use this water barrier stuff?
Yes, either felt paper or synthetic underlayment is needed, unless you are in an area that code requires all ice and water shield for the entire roof.
Ricky B . does the timber need to be primed to get fully bonded
Yeah but once you have to replace your are done. Hard to find a leak too.
what kind of hammer is that ? does it hold the nail?
Magnetic
@@frankorner8797 ok, thanks.
I love roofing..i Roof in florida..hot as fuck..
Thats a frikin pitch 4 house men
Any body can do it
But when is pitch 7 to 12 is the real challenge
Walter Boy bid those ones way higher so you can just do easy roofs during damage season😅
Wear steel cleats, no problem staying on roof. Lol
Yeah, once it hits 8 it's time for the cougar paws, unless your gonna sit on cushion all day😂
REAL CHALLENGE IF YOURE A IDIOT AND DONT KNOW HOW TO WORK LOL
You just about can't on 8
What brand of ice shield is that ? I like the granules for traction and also the shingles won’t stick to it. We’re having a lot of problems ripping shingles off that were done with ice shield. Almost have to take the plywood off to do it right.
Death to Ice Shield Not sure what brand they are using but shingles will most certainly stick to it. About 4/5 roofs I do are a pain in the ass because of it. I suggest you put your felt down over the ice and water. The next roofer will be extremely thankful for it!
If its actual branded Grace Ice & Water it isn't too bad. Any bargain brand self-adhered is an absolute nightmare!
Hey buddy, Grace Ice & Water Shield is a protected trade Marked Name. You are not using Ice & Water Shield. You are using a self adhered underpayment that doesn’t stick.
Hello .. is this Grace Ice and Water Shield or a different manufacturer ??
No it’s not Grace. It’s WinterGuard by CertainTeed. We only install CertainTeed and use this ice and water for our jobs.
Modified Bitumen or SBS. Styerene Butidane Styerene. Or Rubber. Mixed in with Asphalt. Type 2
I’m amazed at how many roofs I see where it’s left out
Great video very helpfull
What i learn is how the job is done with the arneses DETACHED From the ROPE. Wow! IMPRESIVE!
Felt over the whole roof. The next time the roof needs to be done, the roofer will thank you.
We always cover whole roof with bitumen underlayment then lay shingles over it. We do have harsh winters with snow and freezing temperatures.
That's an excellent way to be prepared for harsh weather.
I ran it all the way up my addition. The added cost is low. Put on steel roof. If any leaks/sweating I essentially have a waterproof roof under steel.
If is Florida its good ..cover hole roof with i&ws. North states with snow 1 row or 2 row Around eves its ok
Great video!
Why don't leave the plastic, wouldn't be more protected?
Oops what about around the chimney and walls paper should go up minimum 2 inches
Integrity Roofing and Painting plus in Colorado dont you get tons of snow and ice and rain??
No primer?
wait so put my pro armor o first then this?
Why are they nailing it if it's self adhering? Thanks.
We expect the unexpected, therefore we will add some nails. High winds and rain can come in quickly. Once we install some nails we don't have to wait for the ice and water shield to activate. The additional nails protect the property from water damage if the unexpected weather occurs.
Gugguggug100 if they didn't prime the wood first they'll nail it so it doesn't slip.
They are nailing cause it doesn’t stick. Ice & Water Shield is a trade marked name this guy is violating. Ask for it by name Grace Ice & Water Shield by GCPAT.
Do you need to tape the seams afterwards before shingling?
No..it glues itself once the heat gets at it.
Nope. As long as they are lapped over as per instructions

GAF shingles and CertainTeed used to be 4 inch up the wall and 4 inch by 4 inch by 8 inch step Flash instead of that continuous crap that leaks
Kenneth Fisher the shingles are on the roof
you say you do need felt paper in addition so since I didn't see it under the ice/water shield it is then applied on top ? Also what is your recommendation for a reasonably priced ice/water shield. Will only be applying on the North and west sides of home and one strip. Thank you!
We are producing new videos on ice and water shield. In the new videos we will share our recommendations. Thanks
Great video
Good video but try to do it on a 14 pitch. And second thing Cricket on that roof way way to small against the chimney
Do you have any videos showing American workers installing ice guard?
John Bailey no, they complained it was too hot up there And needed a break every half hour worked.
