Great overview but thought I’d comment on 986, re. scoring. First, early 2.5 engines are not prone to bore scoring, because they have hard-iron “Ferrostan” coated pistons. These pistons were compatible with the cylinder coating (Lokasil). Around the time the base car became a 2.7, the piston coating process changed (to a polymeric coating). Compatibility with the cylinder coating was compromised. So it’s 986s from roughly 2000-on that are prone to scoring. However, all M96-engine Boxsters have a number of things on their side, notably relatively low displacement… smaller bores, thicker cylinder walls, better cooling, less stressed, etc. In short? Get a non-S if you are mildly concerned about scoring, get a 2.5 if you are very concerned, and either get an upgraded car, or don’t bother, if you are paranoid!!
I knew 2.5's were less prone to scoring, but didn't know about the coating, I thought it had to do with the smaller bore and lower heat production. Glad to learn about it now. I bought a 2.5 a short time ago, partially because of this, as well as the stronger dual-row IMS bearing and the more responsive mechanical cable throttle. 2.7's and 3.2's received drive by wire, introducing some throttle input lag, as well as the single row bearing. Some early 2.7's have the dual row, but as far as I'm aware there's no way to check if yours does without dropping the transmission. Further, the 2.5L has the shortest gearing in 1st through 3rd (The S has a 6-speed that enables a shorter 4th and 5th), making it a bit more fun and revvy at legal speeds. A smaller advantage is that the 2.5 can wear most 16-inch wheels and certain 15 inch wheels, such as the ones from a 944, which makes it more affordable to run a separate set of Winter and/or autocross tires. This is because the brakes are smaller, which isn't exactly an upgrade, but none of the spec racers have issues with 2.5 brakes fading or cooking, so you're not losing anything but bragging rights by sticking with the small rotors. They're still 4-piston Brembo calipers all around, just like every Boxster and 911 of the era with the exception of the GT3. The only update I really want is a late top with the glass window, it's not a cheap assembly but it's cheaper than the price difference to a similar-condition 2.7L, and it drops right in. Bonus tip: 986's came with a clutch helper spring that makes the clutch feel numb, it's held in by spring pressure alone and can be removed in under a minute. Anyone who has a 986 manual should try driving with it removed, as it immensely improves clutch feedback, it's heavier but the weight doesn't take long to get used to. Some people fortunate enough to have driven both a 964 and a helper-deleted Boxster have told me the clutch feels very similar. If you don't like how it feels without the spring, it's another 1-minute procedure to put it back in, no bolts or screws required.
I owned a 2001 986, and drove a 2013 Boxster S, and was still happy with my 986. I did have to spend hefty money to replace the IMS, but the 986 was very light, tossable, and a blast to drive. Very quick in 1st and 2nd gear also, and that Flat 6 sounded great with too down.
I bought my 2003 Boxster new in Feb. of 2003 and it's been my daily driver for the past 3 years. I have done all the maintenance and modifications myself since new and had no issues whatsoever. I thought about getting a newer Porsche but I just like the classic round look of 986 in comparison. I probably will never sell it.
Great video! The wife just bought a 2021 718 base, manual, only 13k miles. Funnest car I've ever driven! I'm always saying to her, "Don't you need my truck today for something?" just so I get to drive the Boxster.
Thank you for this great video. Got my first Boxster in 1999. No trouble at all and crazy corner speeds. Next was 987 S. Better drive but before 70.000 km the IMS bearing killed the spirit. So I moved to 997. Could not forget the 986 and after two years a 1997 (all plastic interior and seats covered with fabrics!) joined my 997 turbo and 964. Two years ago it had to make room in my garage to a 1986 targa. Test drived 981 and 718 and I still celebrate the Boxster. For me the final divorce comes with the Boxster EV. Beautiful memories on this wonderful car, which saved Porsche but also triggered my entrance in the 911 world. Best regards from Bled 😊
I think all real Porsche if you are allowed to say so will be in demand, what i mean by real Porsche is the driver focused ones. But why do you think the 986 specificly with the 2.7 will be collectable? Im not argueing that it wont but it should be one of the most common real porsches there is.
Great video, Jay. I’ve got a 981base in Rhodium Silver that I’ll keep forever. I’ve owned & driven many Porsches in my lifetime and feel that my little 16’ base 981 is just perfect. It’s the only P-car I own now. Plenty of power and with the Turbo 20” wheels, she gets a lot of looks. I have access to a GT2RS whenever I want, but the RS just doesn’t give me the same glorious feeling as my Boxster as I can take the Boxster much closer to that “limit” in the twisty’s or the “occasional just for fun” track day. Long live the Boxster.
Thanks for sharing a complete history of Boxster. I live in Singapore and the cars here cost the most bucks anywhere else in the world. I am fortunate to own a 981 Boxster S and i must say it a brilliant mid engine sport car, handle well at bends and sounds awesome with the Remus exhaust and always enjoy the pops and bangs when top down ( well here is too warm in daytime, top down usually by evening hours)
This is an outstanding video, Jay. A LOT of work must have gone into this. It’s well researched, well-written, and delivered professionally (save for the colour balance on your talking head clips). Thank you for producing one of the most informative Boxster videos on the Internet. 👍😄
Have loved all my Porsches. I presently own a highly tuned / customised 3.2sec boxster turbo S. Its been my longest ownership of all so far. In love is where lm at. But honestly, you cant go wrong with any variant from 986 to 4.0l 982.
Go get one! You will not regret it. My recommendation (sweetspot) would be 987.2 manual - if you can find one. Still affordable but so much fun to drive.
I have a 2005 987s for over 3 years now. I really love it. Im thinking of upgrading it, but it's more than double the money and that is a bit much for me.
I’m not sure it would be worth it either. The 987 is a sweet spot in the range. Maybe the 981 is the best but if it’s twice the cost then I’d stick with what you have!
Well, I love them all. While I think the 981 is the best, I love how the older models have aged and feel like the pinnacle of that era. The interiors are timeless, and the exteriors, while criticized as too feminine, I think match that era of sports cars. Those sports cars were our best girls. However, if I had the money and space, to go with my 981, I would get a 718 because it would offer the most different driving experience.
Awesome thanks. Still own my original 986 with quarter mil kms. (19"/275/30 Carrera mags rear) Immaculate and jaw dropping beautiful, I just can't part with it.
Another great video. Thank you. You deserve and I predict you will have a much larger subscriber base. I used to own an 2008 design edition2 boxsterS when I lived in Dubai. Had to sell it when I moved home due to import restrictions. I currently have a 2012 convertible bmw 135i with a flash tune, updated charge pipe and the m sports exhaust. It’s nowhere near the car the boxster was :(. Please keep doing what you do.
Recently discovered your sight Jay. Looks like I'll be doing some binge watching and enjoying every minute. May be buying a Porsche in the near future. Cayman is on top of my list. Thank you for all the good information.
Jay, I really do love your videos. I wish you every bit of luck with your channel. I’m convinced it will only grow! Please keep them coming 👌 2015 991 owner.
That’s really very nice of you. Thank you so much. I enjoy making them so, I’m afraid, there’s no danger of them stopping any time soon! All the best, David. Cheers!
I own the 2000 986 S Rain Forest Green Metallic, six speed. one in the photo. It has been one of the best sports cars I have owned. It is now 24 years old and still turns heads.
I admit I am torn by the boxster. I own a 986 base, and it is a wonderful car. I think they are a real bargain. Decent power, great handling, comfortable. But here is the rub. I also own a miata, which is not as comfortable, nor as powerful. But when I just want to have a fun drive, I pick the Miata.
Late to the party here but thank you for this great video! I currently own a 2014 981 Boxster (2.7, flat 6). I have an opportunity to buy a 718 Turbo engine but I'm not sure if I should do the trade! I wonder if anyone can give me some insight?
@@JAYREAD Thanks for responding, Jay! I'm still torn about it. I just looked over the build sheet and the 718 has a few extras in it. Just have to convince the wife, I guess! Also: Off the line, the 718 is VERY fast compared to the 981.
@adamorly2971 yes, I suppose it is a bit more modern after all. I think the 981 will hold its value better, particularly after they start building the electric ones. Good luck! Let me know what you decide!

That was pretty cool to see for the first time. Just be careful not to look too long at that speed. Take care my friend and happy driving!
@@MK-su6eg Sorry MK. John said 85 km/hr speed(which is 53mph-not 85mph). But you're almost right. The spoiler activates automatically at 75mph. But if you went 85mph, you wouldn't see the spoiler, although it would be deployed, but difficult to see from the driver's seat; John, on the other hand, wouldn't see it either, as it wouldn't be deployed automatically@53mph, unless he manually raised it with the console electric switch, and was viewing it driving past a shop window by reflection. lol
As to the Boxster, I bought a '14 981 Cayman S in 2018. The guards red/luxor beige car had been in two minor accidents, cosmetic damage. I was able to get $4k off the $42k value as a result, and traded a $10k car in the bargain. The Cayman had a falling headliner and the door cards were peeling up; The deal was that they would replace the headliner and the cards. So I go out to Porsche West Broward with my 928 to do the trade, and "Well, the car isn't ready yet. We'd like to take your 928, and we can give you this black '14 Boxster for a day... [I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday....] Heh! What the hell, I'll take the Boxster for a day. I owned an '80 Fiat Spyder at one point, and I've never thought much of convertibles as a result. That was an easy car to deal with: Unclip two latches and throw the roof over your shoulder and down the road you go. I guess I just don't get the point. I like a roof over my head and the windows down instead. Being wide open is great, but it brings up all sorts of other problems that a hard top with the windows down DOESN'T have. The Boxster was nice, but it was a base and I don't want anything to do with a base model at this point, so I was happy to hand the car back to them a day later and bring my Cayman S home. But I did take it to a local bar with the Ultimate Home Appliance and she said it "wasn't bad". It's sad that a PORSCHE DEALERSHIP would try to force a car on me like this; I'm sure they got a better offer on the Cayman S and that is why they pulled this shit-
The 986 ended with the 550 edition which wasn’t just cosmetic upgrades. It had more power, thicker swaybars and 5mm wheel spacers for increased track. And it was a global car, not just for the US
Yes. It has the 987 air box (which is in part the reason for the added HP), the 987 gear lever and 15% shorter throws. There were globally 1953 cars and 500 of them went to the US. It has the GT silver color that was only ever available for the Carrera GT, the 40th anniversary 911, and the special edition 986.
Great video Jay. Thanks. I learned a lot. Did I miss it, or did you not include price ranges and a value score for the 981's? That's the one I want. :) Thanks again for your informative videos.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it! If I missed the 981 prices, I’m truly sorry. They go for late $20k’s up to around $70k for a good GTS and then up again to middle $90k’s for a Spyder. Big range, I know!
Thanks, enjoyed your video! Good to get some facts straight though: - re: IMS and Bore-score. The early cars (986 2.5) are not the most affected. Statistics show that the 2.5 cars, that have a double-row IMS bearing, are least affected. Also on these cars the IMS can be replaced without taking the engine out. - re: bore score … the larger the cylinders, the more sensitive these are for bore-scoring. #1 cause is driver behavior, revving a cold engine. 986 2.5 is same engine with the smallest cylinders, and as such least vulnerable.
Where can I get that sheet from timeline sheet from? It’s not on your Instagram or Facebook page. It would make it easier for us neophytes to follow during your video.
Just happened to stumble on this video. I have a 2004 Boxster S that’s my daily drive. Yes there are quicker cars around but seriously this thing sticks to the road like the proverbial to a blanket. I treated myself to this car for my 60th birthday 6 years ago. It still only has 83,000 miles and a full service history. My only issue is the electronics on the car. But I love it anyway. 👍👍
I currently own a 2000 Boxster, I can't imagine a stiffer suspension, this car is not a daily driver it is just too stiff for my taste, so I hope to take it to the track. I understand that from 2009 on, the interior is longer and they no longer used the doors off the 911, it finally got it's own doors. I am 6 foot and I have the seat all the way down and back, if you are over 6 foot this car will be to cramped, hopefully this was rectified in 2009. I would buy the 2009 just for the PDK, I love paddle shifting. I also own a 1980 MGB, it is a much more comfortable car and would make a great daily driver except in the winter, or if its raining, honestly if you have to put the top up it's like driving a phone booth, so no, not such a great daily driver and on a fast road course, a dog, but get it on the back road twisties, with its overdrive, it puts a smile on my face every time.
@@JAYREAD I knew I liked it bye the time I hit third gear. It is small like the MGB, but it is heaps faster, should be lots of used ones to chose from. I recommend 2009 onward as they have the PDK, and if your MGB has overdrive then you will love the PDK (English translation...... Pretty Dam Quick )

You incorrectly stated that the 2004 3.2 special edition (anniversary) was only available in the US. Wrong. 250 were sold in the UK in right hand drive format, I have one.
Cool fact: The Boxster 25th anniversary model is designed by Grant Larson, the same designer who penned the Detroit show car and the first Boxster production model, the 986.
You are incorrect in saying that the special edition was only available in the US. 300 were sold in the UK and called The Anniversary model as it was called came in a cocoa Brown interior and GT Silver for the exterior. A no cost option was available for the interior if Brown was not wanted.
Yeaahhh!
Nice show, thanks. I would have appreciated a ranking at the end. So I’m following
Theyre all great but i think the 981 boxster s with that flat 6 is king.
I might be the same!
Great video! The wife just bought a 2021 718 base, manual, only 13k miles. Funnest car I've ever driven! I'm always saying to her, "Don't you need my truck today for something?" just so I get to drive the Boxster.
HA! Thanks! Aren’t they great cars?
Agreed on the electric front! Glad to hear there’s love for the Boxster. Loved mine! ❤️
One of the most comprehensive explanation of all the models of boxer
Thanks for watching!
I’ve got an 981S. Would change it only for 718 GTS 4.0
Love my 718 "base" model, a very underestimated sport car. Keep up the good work and nice video's Jay !
Thanks Peter! Do you know, that might be the exact model I would buy. I need to try one. Look out for a video on this!
Nice one Jay, my favourite is the 981 Spyder. 718 Spyder even better but doesn't sound as good in the UK.
Congratulations on this video and on your channel. I have a Boxster GTS 4.0 since July 2020 and it has been 12,000 km of pure driving pleasure.
Thank you! You lucky man!
Thanks Jay, nice overview. Concise, informative and well delivered.
Thank you!
I have a 2000 Boxster with a 2.7. I love it, handles great! Reliable! Very practical for a 2 seater!
Porsche 986 Boxster 2.7 this is a great car. These will be collectable.
I think all real Porsche if you are allowed to say so will be in demand, what i mean by real Porsche is the driver focused ones. But why do you think the 986 specificly with the 2.7 will be collectable? Im not argueing that it wont but it should be one of the most common real porsches there is.
Great timeline presentation on the Boxster Generation!
Thanks chap! Did you post offering to help with the polishing? Can’t find that post now. Might take you up on that!
Nice! I’ve been to Singapore many times. It is ALWAYS hot! Lol!
Yes crazily hot 🥵
Thank you. Well done. This is one to watch over and over again.
Oh yes...RS 60 Spyder.
Thanks Richard. Really glad you enjoyed it and, of course, feel free to watch it over and over again! :-)
I have a 981, for me it's the one, with the flat six!
Nice!
This is an outstanding video, Jay. A LOT of work must have gone into this. It’s well researched, well-written, and delivered professionally (save for the colour balance on your talking head clips). Thank you for producing one of the most informative Boxster videos on the Internet. 👍😄
Thanks Peter!
What a brilliant and informative video. I just purchased a 987.1 Boxster S 3.4l, so excited as this is my first ever flat six. 😋
Thank you! Welcome to the clan!
981 is the best generation
Totally agree👍
Correctomundo!
981 Spyder here agrees
I’ve driven both, the 981 lost the steering charm.
Have loved all my Porsches. I presently own a highly tuned / customised 3.2sec boxster turbo S. Its been my longest ownership of all so far. In love is where lm at. But honestly, you cant go wrong with any variant from 986 to 4.0l 982.
YEAH!
lovely car Boxster 2.7 it drives fantastic
Been thinking of buying a Boxter for ages, great video, very informative, just what I needed, appreciated…. Will check out more vids 👍👍
Go get one! You will not regret it. My recommendation (sweetspot) would be 987.2 manual - if you can find one. Still affordable but so much fun to drive.
@@simonhurlimann908 Great appreciate the info 👍👍
Love my 99
I have a 99 also, and I love it.
Thanks so much for doing this video! Support you!
Thank you! Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
the definitive Boxter guide. Brilliant.
Thank you. I am really happy to hear you enjoyed it.
Really glad I stumbled across this channel - super informative! Thank you for the content.
I’m glad you did too, Alex! Thank you too!
Well said!
Thank so much! More to come!
I have a 997.2 so I have to go for the 987 from 2009-12 but I have a soft spot for the 986 with the 2.5 engine
Recently discovered your sight Jay. Looks like I'll be doing some binge watching and enjoying every minute.
May be buying a Porsche in the near future. Cayman is on top of my list.
Thank you for all the good information.
Mark, welcome to the gang! I love the Cayman. Let me know if I can help you. videocarclub@gmail.com
Cheers!
thank you for this video, it helped me decide which boxter is right for me 🙏🏻
Great! Good luck and thank you for watching!
I own the 2000 986 S Rain Forest Green Metallic, six speed. one in the photo. It has been one of the best sports cars I have owned. It is now 24 years old and still turns heads.
Nice! Greatest color ever!
I’m going to look at one of these Sunday. If there are service records with it, I’m buying it.
I’ve driven a few and the 981S or GTS would be my choice. They are all great cars though
There’s an inaccuracy in the chart regarding the 2009-2011 2.9 base Boxster engine: It’s PFI not DFI. Only the 3.4 of that era was DFI.
Oh you might be right.
@@JAYREAD Yup,davidnicholas is right on. I have an 09 base Boxster since new with the 2.9 PFI, 142000 kms, 6spd manual. A keeper
@@barrywiseman7012best car ever! Ok amount of power, reliable engine, fantastic quality and still hydraulic steering… fun, fun, fun, keep it!
Very useful and efficient video, thank you!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love my ‘02 986S model. Just replaced the IMS Bearings and it’s a fun little car to drive! People shouldn’t sleep on these cars.
How much did it cost to replace the IMS bearing? I am considering buying a 2001 with just 45,000 miles on it. I have never owned a Porsche.
I have a 986 2.7 from 2000. Yust a great car gor the value!👌
Great video, thanks. I’m currently shopping/considering a Boxster S.
Glad you liked it! The spreadsheet is available on my website www.jayreadyoutube.com
Late to the party here but thank you for this great video! I currently own a 2014 981 Boxster (2.7, flat 6). I have an opportunity to buy a 718 Turbo engine but I'm not sure if I should do the trade! I wonder if anyone can give me some insight?
More or less the same car with one important factor: one has six cylinders and the other doesn’t!
BS 982 S very drivable and heading to work with her tomorrow
Nice!
Jay the 981 was a flat not straight six wasn’t it? The film accompanying your intro to the 987 was a 987.2 not a 987.1. If that matters...
Huw, I’ve taken time to consider this and, having adjudicated on the matter, I have judged that it doesn’t matter. (Sorry for the incorrectness in my video!)
@@JAYREAD well I’ve watched it again cos I enjoyed the substance of your video and that nice little spec/model year table.
@@huwd2292 Thank you for watching!
718 is a fantastic all round car but the 981 has to be the sweet spot
There’s something about a flat six!
I’m driving a 2003 Honda Accord with a 2.4.. but the 718 spider sounds
Cool, hopefully my future wife will buy me that or an Aston Martin or a Camaro zl1 or one of those super rare vipers VLF Force 1.. can’t wait
Sounds like you plan to marry well! Good strategy!

I drive top down most of time as well. I find that since the cockpit doesn't have a back seat that if I keep my speed in excess of 80 km/hr, the wind deflecting over the windshield keeps rain from landing on me. I love it!
@@johnc.8298 ooooh o, don't make me try it and get a ticket!? You know I'm, gotta shouldn't do it, wish me luck? Love my boxster.,,,I'm testing the fin in the back to rise at 85 miles automatically? Yeahhhh. That's the tcket, noooooo
@@MK-su6eg That makes me laugh!!! Ok, I wish you luck! :)
Oh and the fin? I wanted to see it extend automatically as well but it's impossible to see from the cockpit. However, I was driving along a freeway at high speed once and saw the shadow of my boxster on a stretch of hwy with a cement median one morning when the sun was still low in the sky.
[I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday....]
Heh!
It's sad that a PORSCHE DEALERSHIP would try to force a car on me like this; I'm sure they got a better offer on the Cayman S and that is why they pulled this shit-
Hahahaha!
“all sorts of other problems”, right. Like a headliner falling down. Funny I had a 987 Boxster S and now a 981 Spyder and my headliner is fine.😹
a very happy subscriber here!
Thanks Dave!
@@JAYREAD Thanks again Jay.
Cheers Jay
Great video
Thanks a lot, Juan!
981. There is no substitute-
Thanks, enjoyed your video! Good to get some facts straight though:
- re: IMS and Bore-score.
Glad you enjoyed it! Watch my IMS video to see my approach to that! Here’s the thing though, there are no reliable statistics!
981 series was the first time I ever liked the looks of a Boxster it took them years to make that car look balanced and holistic. 😂
Where can I get that sheet from timeline sheet from? It’s not on your Instagram or Facebook page. It would make it easier for us neophytes to follow during your video.

Love my 986 can’t wait for spring to come 😎
Just happened to stumble on this video. 👍👍
Nice! Just the way I feel. It’s not very fast but it is VERY nice!
Wondering what the original weight was in 1996? Why the non-"S" is used for Spec racing?
...and which one is actually more fun?
We have similar tastes, Sean. I have an MG too. I think I might have to get a Boxster.
@@seanwalsh999 haha! Mines an RV8 so it has five gears. Do you know what? I fancy a really early Boxster with a manual. One of the first ones. That would be interesting.

You are incorrect in saying that the special edition was only available in the US. 300 were sold in the UK and called The Anniversary model as it was called came in a cocoa Brown interior and GT Silver for the exterior. A no cost option was available for the interior if Brown was not wanted. Of the 300 sold in the I was informed that only 27 were ordered in the cocoa Brown and I had one in cocoa bought new in 2004 and sold 15 years later with 108,000 miles on the clock
