Chris - is it normal/possible to check how the clutch and flywheel are as part of this inspection when underneath or is it only possible when driving and checking for any sticking vibrating issues etc? Such a helpful video for my 986. Amazing work chaps 👏
@@TheChrisParkhouse Hi Chris, unfortunately the only way to check the clutch and flywheel is a test drive on a service. The only way to check these items properly is to remove the gearbox. Hope this helps 👍🏼
Currently looking at picking up an old Boxster for fun. My dad sent me this video. More encouraged than ever and could see my visiting EPorsche. Reasonable, knowledgeable team.
If this isn't an advertisement for a great reliable and honest Independent Porsche Specialist, then I don't know what is..How reassuring to bring your Porsche here and know you are getting great straightforward feedback...I bet you are happy that you got that car now- it certainly looks like a great buy Joel, well-done mate.
Such a helpful video! My concerns over servicing costs and buying an older higher mileage car fully dealt with. And the team letting you involve them as they did. Great advert for them. Thanks very much!
Glad the mechanic was accurate on the IMS issue, really it’s a change when you change the clutch job because 90% of the labour is identical until you get to the other 10% removing the IMS bearing. That weeping is the RMS, it happens basically the seal perishes slightly and it weeps, you get drops of oil on the drive and can get a slight smell of burning oil plus your oil consumption increases slightly but give it a blast with the jet washer and your good. You drain plugs can be sorted with a trombone cleaner, literally a long metal springy flexible length with brushes on either end used for cleaning the inside of a trombone. It costs about £5 just push it in the top and look for it out of the bottom. Pull it all the way through and the drain is clean.
Really nice guy showing you round the car. Great content Joel, nice to see you've got a bit of a gem. Love the fact that you look after, maintain and better your cars. Get the merc a looking over!

I should eat my own medicine , ive never taken my BMW to a specialist garage expecting the price to be well too high. This video genuinely highlights the benefits of a proper specialist garage . Well done Eporsch!
I'm very surprised at how mint the car actually turned out. Like even the water drains were pretty clean, new brakes and radiator, very nice/clean interior, pretty okey exterior. Very lucky purchase. In any other car I wouldn't think about the suspension work the car needs, but this one might be worth it. The exhaust could indeed use some improvement, especially with those high revs. It's interesting to see that such a childhood dream car is pretty reasonble/cheap to maintain (if the car wasn't abused). I'm enjoying the content as if I bought it, so keep it up! 😄😄😄 Also funny to hear gf took the Porsche 😂 She knows her stuff!
I purchased one for £2k. I've stripped out the interior and carpet to clean 20 years of grime. I've found minor issues supposedly fixed at high cost by specialists in the past.
My IMS failed three years ago on my early 2005 Boxster (I purchased the car new), and the car had just over 21,000 miles...250 miles after my last oil change. I always changed my oil myself every year, had a spin on oil filter and a magnetic drain plug. No metal ever showed up, and I always cut my oil filter open to look inside. Sent the car to LN Engineering after the failure...one of the best experiences I have had with a business. They rebuilt the motor (not too much was wrong...just metal that needed to be cleaned) and had them install the "IMS Solution". The car runs better than it ever has. By the way... Porsche told me to kiss-off. I've owned at least one Porsche since 1975, so I'm a Porsche guy. Still love the car, just not the company. The last tips on keeping those drains clear was excellent. Thanks.
Did a full suspension/chassis refresh on the driveway on my old 2002 986 at about 120k miles. All the arms, top mounts, dampers, springs, gearbox and engine mounts, inner and outer track rods etc... Its nothing like as expensive as some claim so long as you shop around for parts (Meyle, TRW etc). You wont beleive how much better it is once done, even though the car feels 'fine' before hand. Very nice to work on as allthe fasteners etc are good quality. Just watch the ARB droplink upper bolts through the hubs holding the struts on, often stuck. Highly reccomend Koni FSD shocks too!
When I see helpful, patient mechanics like this it makes me want to buy a certain marque just so I can take it to them for that extra care and attention.
Great video - really enjoyed the content and the insight into the common issues with these cars. It sounds like you've found yourself a decent garage too. Owner and mechanic seem like decent, honest blokes that know their stuff.
Really enjoyed this video. I really like the Boxster and I learnt a great deal of interesting facts to look out for when I get round to buying a second hand one.
Modifying the exhaust will effect fuel consumption. Any future alterations that are non-standard must be declared to your insurance company. All round, a great purchase. Years ago, my neighbour took his Boxter abroad. The drain holes got blocked with sand from joyriding on the beach with the roof down! When the Winter came, the rain quickly filled the car up with water, and the alarm couldn't be silenced (throughout the night!) Expensive repair!
I’m due to retire in four years or so and one of my wishes was for a nice little classic or roadster to muck about with. Something fun but reliable for weekends away etc. I have looked at Boxters in the past but worried about maintenance costs. After seeing your video, Joel I think this may be the way to go. Cheers for all the information. Mike.

I'm looking at buying a Boxster 2002. It's in such great shape and beautiful yellow, but the internet has got me terrified of the IMS bearing issue. I guess you never had any issues with that?
Part of the exhaust sound is that wonderful intake bark at 4000 rpm and over. I had a sports exhaust fitted on one of my Boxsters once and wished i hadn’t because the exhaust sound completely drowned out that bark!
Personally I would forget about a louder exhaust and refresh the suspension ... plus any detailing the car needs. Cant beat going to a specialist on a marque, good viewing
Excellent video. I purchased a 57 plate Boxster from these guys in July and it's been great to drive. It was so educational to get the run through commentary from Chris. On the exhaust I'd say leave as is and maybe invest in refreshing the suspension.

I just checked a similar car (same year) here in Quebec, Canada which has 125,000 km selling for $21,000 CDN! Sounds like you got an incredible deal! Cheers.
Good video. Thanks for sharing. Props to the mechanics for there thourough and friendly service! Not sure if you've made the upgrade or even if you still have the car but I added an aftermarket exhaust muffler to 986 which made a huge difference - perhaps too huge which is why I changed over to a Porsche PSE exhaust system, a more expensive option but one that yielded a subtle improvement to the original back box and was less showey than the aftermarket version. If you are looking for that perfect sound then one thing I would upgrade are the headers becasue they not only imporve the sound but also the overall perfomance and efficience of the car.
Great vid 👍 Just in the process of buying boxster 987 from these guys, due to land with me this week. So far they have been a total pleasure to deal with.
Great video. Do the suspension first, you'll get more out of the car. The aftermarket suspensions are great and come in at about the same price as factory with much better gains. @@DeepEnterprises my brother is running kw in his boxster s. I've driven the car on 2 different hpde events at walkins glenn. they have performed great.
Notwithstanding the click-baity title, another great one Joel. You did a smash-and-grab on this car IMHO. Obviously a well cared for Boxster, new brakes, etc. that is a major bargain. It looks post inspection like you nailed it on the head...sometimes you do business with people where, at a certain level, like 3K, their time is worth more than money and it's worth it to price very aggressively and shift it fast. That's ALWAYS a great situation to find yourself in! And now you've got a great shop for it too. I'd say a good day at the office lol. As a '03 Z4 3.0 six speed owner myself, I absolutely love the car to bits. Just a run to the grocery, hearing that straight-piped M54 burble and flinging it around a couple corners puts a smile on my face every time. But I'm very ADD with my cars, and obsessions creep into me that I inevitably act one (and yes, it's cost me a lot of $ and headaches over the years, worth every one of 'em!) And I've always loved Boxster S's and the bug is creeping into me. How would you honestly compare the driving experience, the vibe, etc. of each? I know it's early days for you with the Porsche so might be hard to say but definitely curious. And apologies if you've covered all this but did you sell the Z to buy the Boxster, or did you want rid of it for other reasons? Thanks much and cheers! Keep up the amazing work.
First video of yours I've seen....well presented and will be following this with interest. Independents like Eporsch are invaluable in the layman running these types of car at an affordable price...hate to think how much that level of service would cost at a dealer.
Wow! 1st, Joel you did got a great deal for the car. 2nd, EPorsche owner and Chris are very honest and seems a very nice guys! That is the reason this shop has lot of customers!
This is an excellent perspective and thorough vehicle inspection and quick service call. Great tip about cleaning the debris in the end. No one talks about that as of yet that I have seen. I hope you continue to use their service and vlog them all.
First time for me to view your video. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience especially the commentary from Chris. Hadn't realised how competitively priced the service cost and especially liked the eporsch garage. Excellent video Joel.
Very impressed with the way Eporsche dealt with the issues and didn't ramp them up as essential repairs to boost their money!! Did you ever establish what was the EMS warning which came on twice? I wouldn't change the exhaust unless you get the whole system remapped and making it noisier would be a nightmare on a long journey!!
Great and simple point re drain points and holes. so many cars have various front and rear drains which if blocked will cause internal overspill and damp smells or puddles and other more serious issues such as electrics. Worth checking on any car twice a year and especially if you park under trees and in the autumn. Plus nice pace of video and explanation, sounds a genuine place and who only fix or replace what needs to be done.
Actually, the video does not explain why the Boxster was so cheap (contrary to what the title says). Instead, the technician points out that the previous owner(s) spent money on the car and that this was a good deal. Despite the click bait, an entertaining and informative video.
I think you’ve got yourself a bargain Joel. A minor issues (suspension) that you can expect from any 20 yo cars but overall, not bad! And yes, please change the exhaust. Almost forgot you’re near to 55k subs, we’ll done. have you still got the merc ;)
Well done and i like your mechanic, he is the real deal and very strait forward. Nice to see a shop not looking to pile it on you with panic statements of doom.
Thats got to be the most informative video ive seen in the last 4 years + of owning a 987.1 S . Hope you feed back to Chris . Only 2 IMS failures puts my mind slightly at ease but end of the day is pot unlucky. Bought my csr and have a video of them going to the effort of changing the seal and saying yes IMS is good . Why wouldn't you change bearing while your in there ? Anyway i bought the car and listened to too many negatives on UA-cam and it spoil the drive having this in the back of your mind. I can say shes good at moment. Chris was correct but when i take my oil filter out i have one bloody strong magnetic. Chris did point out suspension issues but didnt say if it would pass a MOT ! Please bear that in mind . What you paid for full service was excellent. Ive just paid £120 just for the oil , about £10 for a magnetic sump plug and washer . Am in Yorkshire so unfortunately Chris is too far to travel to . Thumbs up to you young man and Chris
Joel, what a great video, you are so lucky with that boxster, what has turned out to be a really good purchase, and the guys at eporsh seemed really knowledgeable and very reasonable, if you ever want to sell it, I'd be interested!
You got a good deal on the car, it looks to be in fairly good condition for it's age and mileage. Now, a major service would include new spark plugs, engine air filter change trans axle fluid change, coolant, etc. in addition to the engine oil & filter change. Changing the plugs, performing an oil & filter change, engine air filter & cabin air filter are all tasks that' aren't hard to do at home and will save you money. I do this on my Cayman. Also do my own brake pad replacements - saving even more. Think about joining a forum that educates you on how to do some of these tasks at home and you'll continue to save more money down the road. Planet-9 is a good forum to check out.
Don't change the exhaust. The half-life on the satisfaction you get from it is brief. Save your dosh for the suspension work and IMS. Or a nice bottle of Chateau Angelus!
I am have had several different styles of that car. My comment is don't change the exsast for now. You have a fine machine and that service shop looks honest and top Notch. Again -- Happy Motoring . John
Hey man, congratulations. I’d agree with those recommending to keep the exhaust ‘stock Porsche’ 🙂. Instead, spend that extra money on at least partial suspension refresh, that will actually be a favor to car, yourself and maybe even the next buyer, later on… good luck
Great car’s Joel I have a Boxster 986 56 miles on clock 03 I have owned it for 9 years passed mot every time straight though she’s got us down to Tarifa Spain on a road trip never missed a beat enjoy your ownership 😊👍
Great video, Very informative! I just bought an 03 Boxster myself and I have the same suspension issue, Stops are gone. Also needed thermostat and a water pump. I think these cars are a great buy and worth fixing up. Values at least in the US have steadily increased.
I suggest you add a "SAE Loop Connector" to your battery, mount it above the battery under the windshield between the wipers. You can then connect a battery charger/maintainer which insures you can open the bonnet when the battery dies!!
Excellent video with good content and advice, my Boxster S 2001 on 93k and I am always concerned about the IMS bearing and RMS seal, this video tells me it is very rare. Thank you
I bought a 1988 Carrera Sport from ePorsche 10 years ago, still got it. I can recommend Roly , I’m very happy with the car and would buy again from him 😊👍
Just had my coffin arms replaced by eporsch together with top mounts and arms just like yours Joel - £3K. Was worth it though and still a bargain car afterwards! Love the channel and keep the content coming!
Jeez, I just had my coffin arms and top mounts done by a specialist in the North East, as well as a full laser alignment, for less than £700. Thanks dude, you've just made me feel a lot better about that!
I recommend you have the water pump / coolant pump replaced immediately. or check the service records to see if it's been done. when it goes, you'll lose the engine without warning. they don't just sort of start to fail, they just fail. you might notice coolant leaking underneath or you might not. it's damn bloody expensive but cheaper than an engine rebuild. I just replaced the coolant pump in my 987S and consider it well worth the investment in preventative maintenance. this is really the only crucial service that the engine needs. with your 986, though, you need a water pump and the IMS bearing replaced. do these before suspension If you plan to keep the car.
Nice to see a 928 in there as well…. Ran a 928 s2 manual…. Back in the 90’s😎 Well informed chat with the mechanic Seems a good guy to have in your pocket👍🏼💪🏼
I own a 911 turbo & Panamera 4SE I thinking about getting a old Boxster for cheep. I want a Porsche I could drive every day. Great video. Ashley didn’t like the bugs do because it looked too small for me growing on me I used to have a 944 and a 924. They’re all great reliable cars I think I’m sold on a Boxster as a everyday beater 😀
I have a 2004 Boxster S with 29 000 miles. The rear main seal was replaced by Porsche as part of the first major service. I was originally told I would have to pay 30% but in the event it was done without charge. As my car gets light summer use only I decided to change the IMS bearing s I could drive it without constantly listening for any early signs of engine disintegration. I had an EPS roller bearing upgrade fitted by my nearby independent specialist who has done several of these. Cost £1100 all in.
IMS is a rare thing - bore liner failure is a more common in the water cooled cars (still rare - but does happen more). I believe it affected the 996/997 (especially the S/4S 3.8 997) more than the boxsters, but i wasn't unheard of on the 2.5/2.7/3.2s. For the price you paid - i'd say you got winner. Also subscribed, look forward to seeing your channel grow Joel.
Like mechanics tip: Replace when doing clutch as maintenance. That being stated, do not ignore any odd noises. (IMS bearing) Q: Even if IMS bearing issue is present, does it relate to any oil leak/seep? Cover for rear IMS leak in my opinion not related to bearing failure? If leaking from IMS.....replace immediately, otherwise would blame the rear main seal. Again, at any clutch replacement should address both RMS and IMS issues.....and why not the transmission input seal also. Great time to P.M. vehicle while your are in there! My thoughts only P
Great vid , that garage and Chris are very knowledgeable and if I was in area they would be looking after my 2. Go for gundo hack on exhaust anything else will set lambda sensors off. Google gundo hack. Also when closing "frunk" on any Porsche place your palm on the badge it's straight over the clip and avoids and damage or hand prints to paint 👍
I’ve just had a major service on my 718 Boxster S which has 23,000 kilometres. AUS$2095.00 which converts to about GBP1,800.00 . $50 each for a spark plug, glad there’s only 4 of them. The cost servicing a Porsche in Australia is outrageous.
I moved to Thailand from the UK in 2003. Miss very little from the UK, but used Porsches are one thing I do miss. Lots of very good used cars in the UK and lots of very good small specialist places like this one. I had two very nice 944's, an S and S2. In Thailand the prices for new and used Porsches are astronomical, and outside of Bangkok proper servicing is very difficult if not impossible. With a Boxster or 996 (despite his advice) the IMS bearing would worry me! Enjoy your car!
It was a pleasure Joel, looking forward to hopefully seeing you again for a suspension refresh video 🤟🏼
I vote to upgrade to the Porsche M030 euro sport suspension.

Great video!! Don’t go silly with the exhaust, the money is better spent getting the suspension refreshed 🙌🏼
Good video Joel, nice seeing the detailed inspection filmed- that mechanic seemed really nice
Mechanic was very nice indeed! Thanks for watching
One of the best video for someone willing to buy his first Porsche! Congrats for both! 👌
I love the sound independent specialist mechanics who are honest with you. They are gold.
My Toyota CHR 2 year service was £340 yesterday and only had it less than 2 hours. You have made a great purchase and service very reasonable.
Nice to see an honest opinion from eporsche on the Porsche not trying to get work but advised what is required later. Nice to see from a garage .👍
Really happy to hear about the IMS. Just got an 06 Boxster and it drives great. Got a quote to upgrade and got a quote of 6k!!!
Excellent video, very interesting. I would leave the exhaust as it is. Only thing to do is to straighten the rear number plate 😊
Thanks to you young guys, Joel, this Porsche passion of ours is robust and positive for the future :-)
Don't change the exhaust. The half-life on the satisfaction you get from it is brief. Save your dosh for the suspension work and IMS. Or a nice bottle of Chateau Angelus!
What an honest caring garage you have found .
Can you do video where talk about the difference between the Porsche boxtet and the BMW Z4 ?
I am have had several different styles of that car. My comment is don't change the exsast for now. You have a fine machine and that service shop looks honest and top Notch. Again -- Happy Motoring . John
Hey man, congratulations.
I’d agree with those recommending to keep the exhaust ‘stock Porsche’ 🙂.
Instead, spend that extra money on at least partial suspension refresh, that will actually be a favor to car, yourself and maybe even the next buyer, later on… good luck
That Chris knows his stuff, pleasure to listen to somebody with honest opinions.
On my year 2000 S I keep it on charge through the cigarette lighter with an Optimate battery maintainer.
Excellent video with good content and advice, my Boxster S 2001 on 93k and I am always concerned about the IMS bearing and RMS seal, this video tells me it is very rare. Thank you
It is pretty rare yes, and the higher the mileage the better really because after around 100k if it hasn’t given way it probably won’t
The Boxster Babblers (SF bay area USA) recommended "desnorkeling" to vastly improve the engine sound
Excellent video and many thanks to Chris!! Nicely done to both of you!
Great video content and great to have a walk round with a Porsche expert. Keep the content up.
It was super informative for me, thanks for watching!
That also included the full service and spark plugs, and Chris does know his stuff, he's a good man
@@cindercruz Thankyou 😎
Jeez, I just had my coffin arms and top mounts done by a specialist in the North East, as well as a full laser alignment, for less than £700. Thanks dude, you've just made me feel a lot better about that!
@@tameracingdriver Would you mind sharing the specialist name please. Thanks
Great video! Shows a person around the vehicle who may be unfamiliar with the design. Thanks for posting it!
Nice to see a 928 in there as well…. Ran a 928 s2 manual…. Back in the 90’s😎
Well informed chat with the mechanic
Seems a good guy to have in your pocket👍🏼💪🏼
You got to do the suspension my friend. The car is a good one and should be kept in tip top condition. Its definitely a keeper.
One of the best 986 videos I've seen! Mechanic was a total pro!
Got mine almost 2 years ago for $4,500 US (in NYC). Still makes me smile. LOVE that car!
Like mechanics tip: Replace when doing clutch as maintenance. That being stated, do not ignore any odd noises. (IMS bearing)
Q: Even if IMS bearing issue is present, does it relate to any oil leak/seep? Cover for rear IMS leak in my opinion not related to bearing failure? If leaking from IMS.....replace immediately, otherwise would blame the rear main seal. Again, at any clutch replacement should address both RMS and IMS issues.....and why not the transmission input seal also. Great time to P.M. vehicle while your are in there!
My thoughts only
P
By far the best video you’ve put out to date!
Cheers Tomos, thanks for watching
That was a very interesting informative video. Thanks for taking so much trouble. The costings are always so important!
Great to see what appears to be a very honest mechanic, great video.
Really enjoyed this video - the guys eporsch seem a really nice bunch too. Very informative!
Blocked drain holes in the bonnet allowed water in and flood the tilt unit that spiked the ecu. Expensive
Hi Joel
Great information on the boxster service ,,, would keep the original Exhaust ,,any louder attracts the men in blue
