  • After driving a Porsche 992 911 Carrera S for three days, I decided to buy a pre-owned 981 Boxster Base with PDK. Along all the same roads, it beat the 911 in more ways than expected. So, this is my love letter to this utterly brilliant machine.

      Thank you. Nice to see passion for something other than money or prestige. In the last two years I have purchase 2 982s one Cayman, one Boxster vs 1 911. I joke about Porsche and Audi paying for the sins of doing wrong for so long by producing the money loosing(I could be wrong) R8, Boxster and Cayman. The 911 has too much of a nostalgia driven price premium . 911, best car made right yet doing it wrong. I still have my V8 Audi RS5.

Sounds like we are very like minded as I've been a Porsche nut for almost as long as I've been an RC Heli nut. Currently have a 99 986 that I got from the Jag dealership I worked at back in 2001 from a good customer and have loved it all these years. Had an older 73 911T before, and while it was still a very fun car and blast to drive, I just found the 986 to be a much more enjoyable all round experience. Kinda wish I kept the 911 however considering they are now fetching into the 6 figures here in Canada, and I only got a fraction of that when I sold it. Even 912's are fetching crazy coin now. @@Gamumee there are plenty of independent Porsche specialists - although official service intervals are 24 months apart and go minor £250 / major £350, older cars benefit from an annual inspection - many parts are no more than a regular german car and it depends where the car is in terms of its maintenance / mileage - many specialists like revolution porsche have a menu of prices on line - I would say that you need to be prepared to spend on upkeep but its not prohibitive and they are very well built - service history is important with Porsche - if the car is 2000 - 2006 its important to have had IMS bearing replaced or budget for this with clutch change. I would have about £1500 spare after buying any Boxster unless its service history is right up to date.

I regard the Boxster GTS 4.0 as the perfect all-round two-seat roadster and one of the best Porsches ever made, so well done you! One thing most people don't realise is that the Boxster is more relaxed than the Cayman over distance because its cabin has much less road noise. While the sloping rear deck and glass hatch panel amplify the road noise behind your head, road noise just goes up through the canvas roof and out of the car. I noticed this consistently over the years when driving Boxster and Cayman models back-to-back on Porsche launch events.

I was a founding contributor to 911 & Porsche World and Total 911 magazines in the UK and I drove my first 911 in 1979! The only downside of the Boxster/Cayman duo is that Porsche does not offer a front-lift suspension option, which is a problem in places with lots of speed humps and steep ramps. That is mystifying since it shares the McPherson front end with the 991, which does have a front-lift option. I learned this when I was trying to spec a 718 Spyder with the Press Department in Germany. The problem became irrelevant when I was offered the GT3 (with front-lift!) at a very good price as its owner had been posted back to his home country. But, I couldn't get past the notion that it was paying for things I did not need. Indeed, the S is exactly what I wanted, and nothing beats the sound of a Porsche 6 roaring towards redline. I love the choice I made.

I don't feel at all that I've settled for the Cayman. but instead simply marvel at the amazing value the 981 brings without the IMS or bore scoring issues. I have owned a ‘13 981 Boxster S for over two years and absolutely love it!
    I also have the PDK and Sports Chrono package as well as a lot of other options.
    I looked for almost six months for this particular iteration of this wonderful roadster.
    It cost $30,000 less than comparable’13 911’s, but weighes ~250 lbs less, handles better and gets better gas mileage to boot.
    I had it shipped across the US after finding it in my brothers home town and he checked it out and I have a warranty so no worries- and zero problems after 15,000 miles and a bazillion smiles.
    Some things only some Porschephiles know- This car is made on the same assembly line as the 911 and shares something like half its parts with it. My S model has the same engine and transmission, most of the interior and electronics and front suspension. It’s built to the same quality standard and imo is easily the best value in a sports car anywhere.

    I own one of the last manual 6 cylinder Boxster , took a long time to find a white version but I could not be happier with the purchase. I fully agree with most of the opinions you have written so no point in me repeating these. I started 2 seater convertible owning with a MGF in 2001 which changed to a MGTF 160 in 2003, a succession of MG’s followed, my son was in need of a car so he took ownership of my last MGTF and I tried an Audi TT roadster very disappointing with a turbo engine, my wife gave in and let me start the successful Boxster search. Now the point I have just passed my 77 th birthday, 73 year old when I purchased my 4 year old Boxster, I have no intention of changing this car as I get more pleasure from the Boxster than anything else now or the smaller time available in the future that will occur, I am a Nikon user but photography interests me and days of equipment rivalry have long gone.

I am a 991.1 2014 C4S owner who is completely devoted to the Porsche brand. My love affair began as a 11 year old in 1972 (I followed my military father on a 4 year posting to what was called West Germany at the time) when I saw my first Carrera Targa on original Fuchs rims on the Autobahn. Then in early 1974 my mind was utterly blown away when I saw the venerable 1973 Carrera RS up close! The ethereal sounds emanating from the flat 6 (Mine is the last naturally aspirated series except for the GT cars as you know) is like no other make in this universe. These are very special cars indeed. Your vehicle is beautiful and while I can certainly see the argument for owning a specific model Boxter or a Cayman based on looks and performance,, the 911 is where my heart is. You are now officially in my Top tier of UA-cam presenters alongside Harry from Harry's Garage and Joe Achilles. Well Done Sir! Just about the best car review I've seen (or, stumbled on).
    Why?
    For once, none of that horsepower or torque vectoring to fuss over. (Sure, they're important to make sure you're buying a solid machine that's just what you've been looking for - but which Porsche isn't?) Instead, it's about how the car satisfies your daily wants and needs, and this video has hit every relevant button. I happen to be just researching the benefits that are meaningful to me in my next/last Porsche - a coupe - and the 911 and Cayman boxster are precisely the two I'm eyeing. 100% agree with all of your observations and rationale for going with a 981 Boxster rather than the 911. I made a similar choice for the same reasons when I bought my 2014 Boxster S PDK (Rhodium Silver with Carrera Red full leather interior). I look for every excuse I can to drive it, top down, and strangers frequently approach me to tell me how great the car looks. Many mistake it for a 2021 or 2022 model and can't believe its almost 10 years old. If I ever move "up" to a 911, it will be because we want to be able to take a passenger (or a dog) with us in a rear seat (such as they are), and it will be a cabriolet model. But I don't see that happening any time soon. The 981 is such great "bang for the buck," I'm not really even tempted to consider a change. Thanks for the great video!

    • @PETERFRITZPHOTO
      @PETERFRITZPHOTO  Рік тому +2

      Thanks a lot, Jax. The silver and red is my dream combo! The brochure images were burned into my brain long before I finally got mine. Sadly, none in that colour combo were available when I was ready to buy. I reckon most people would assume a 981 is a current model car - the design is still fresh.

      Yes it is. But for where and how I drive, the Boxster is the best choice. I know this because I drove all the same roads in both cars, and the Boxster was more fun, more engaging, and more reassuring in those conditions. The 911 is a brilliant GT car. I still might buy one, but in the mountains, the Boxster and Cayman are the preferred platform. For me, and many others who've echoed the same sentiments.

    Congrats on the Boxster. Review is right on.
    When I decided to get a P car 9+ years ago, I test drove the 981cs (manual) and a base 991 (pdk) back-to-back on the same route. I just felt more at home with the 981, had more fun, and more engaging. I couldn't put my fingers on why. Throughout the week after the test drive I kept thinking about the Cayman. So, I went back to submit the order and did not regret one bit since. Took it to the track and had so much fun.
    Had a chance to get a gt4 back in 2020 but due to covid (potential bad economy) I gave up the spot. Minor regret.

I loved my NC MX-5 and and thinking of an ND2, but a part of me has always wanted a 981 and you’re words (and the fact prices are starting to come back down) have really got me thinking. My only negative of the 981 S I drove was the gearing in the manual was so long, especially compared with the MX-5… but it’s still no Porche. 😊

    Really enjoyed this story. I'm 33, long time car enthusiast and new to photography (at least with a proper camera). Feels like I'm just starting to let go of certain life expectations and instead looking to enjoy what I can in the moment... So lots of things to resonate with here!
    I dream of owning an air cooled 911 or a GT3, but I also know how stressful those would be to merge with traffic, and for the GT3 I would not be able to reasonably use half the power on the street. Considering that and the price tags, I'm content with my old car with just enough character, and no big screens!

      Thank you, Sean, for this wonderful comment. One way to increase performance is to raise expectations. But lowering them (or at least, tempering them), can increase happiness. I look at all these ‘10-X-ers’, and they never look happy or content; always anxious and hungry for more. Always chasing the next thing, and the next thing. I know, because I was like that for decades. These days, I choose to be a ‘happy striver’ who’s no longer in a rush.

    • @seanm996
      @seanm996 10 місяців тому

      @@PETERFRITZPHOTO Absolutely, the chase never ends, I even read the anticipation of new toys or better jobs is more fulfilling than when we actually achieve those goals... I’m bought a 124 Spider couple years ago (42m) and have always lusted after a Porsche. After having a lightweight convertible that you can throw around and rev through the gears, I learned it’s not all about 0-60mph. My Audi A4 and wife’s Q5 are both faster, but on a sunny day they don’t compare in smiles per hour. I think I would be perfectly happy with a 718 and have it paid off like my other cars. Sports cars are a lot more fun if you know you can afford to replace it with a check! Glad to know I’m on the right track and a Porsche might be a car I own in my 50s. Thanks for the great video!

However during the past 3 or 4 years I have been looking over a Boxster or a Cayman as well. I took a drive in a Boxster S and I must say it is enough car for me. My reasoning behind the Carrera was exactly what you said, the iconic body shape, and probably those old magazines I've kept with Carreras on the cover.
