    This evinrude outboard was not getting to operating temperature. I first check for a thermostat. Then I check the water flow. The reason I check water flow was the engine was bought with no thermostat and no temperature switch. I thought it might have been getting hot and both were taken out. As you can see the water flow is good. I will still keep a close eye on it to make sure it does not run hot.

    I'm no marine mechanic...... but I'd guess by the guy in the background that that's a 1 horse powered outboard! Ha ha.

    I just mounted my 30 horse Johnson on my transom for the summer. Its a 1998 motor but still like new under the cover because my boating is all fresh water. We here are very lucky not to have the corrosion & salt deposits of salt water operation.That must be a real pain in the rear for ocean boating.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 роки тому +1

      The ocean is a real harsh environment. Most equipment does not last a long time. It's like a car in the north don't get to attached because the salt is going to eat it.

    You probably know it, but always check the lower seal of the powerhead after overheating situations and weird diy fixes like that one.
    Many times i have come across with burned lower seal when someone had driven with a bad impeller or thermostat (or with both).

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 років тому

      I had not had that problem yet. But thanks for the tip. That does make a lot of sense that the over heating is going to damage the seals too. Thanks for sharing and commenting.

    I have 84 35hp Evinrude. ran on trailer, water circulating sporadically. Put in water and idled about 1/2 mile before no tattle tale and steam coming out. motor was hot. Changed water pump ran on trailer only got it to pee a few minutes and now, no pee and steaming again from tattle tale. What should I check next? I did run hose trough water tube before pump change, had water at TT and out exhaust ports. Thanks in advance.

    Have you ever heard of the motor over cooling? My 25 hp 1984 evinrude I think my water is by passing the thermostat. The part of the head where the rubber stat seals looks all rough and corroded. The engine never warms up
    About 107 degrees
    I tested the thermostat starts to open right at 143 degrees
    What do think?

    Hello I have a question I have a 1986 15 evenrude I bought from a friend, it’s in excellent shape for it age, I replaced the water pump kit, first time I took it out after the water pump it ran good, water was coming out the tel tail but not like it should, I took it home and blew compressed air threw the tel tail hose and it started to pump water good, then the water stopped coming out,some dirt clogged the the hose which connects to the tel tail it looked like a mixture of sand and grinded shells,I cranked it up then it started peeing good again. Took it out today 11/20 it was dripping than pouring out, also steam was come out the exhaust as well,took the cover off and the engine was really hot like I couldn’t put my hand on it for 2 seconds, looked at the hose and it was clogged again with the same sand/crusted shells,took it back home ran compressed air again thru it and water is flowing good throughout the motor again, Please any suggestions on this will help.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  3 роки тому +1

      There are some small passages the water has to go through. If the motor has sand or fine shells in the in side making it run hot. You are going to have to pull the side cover and most likely the head too. check out my video on the cooling system. I will put a link to it.

    Hello, I have a 1984 140 horsepower Johnson cross-flow. I noticed when I have the earmuffs on the engine the water was coming out very slowly not as a strong steady stream like I seem to remember it used to have. I changed the complete water pump and housing assembly and put it back together and it's still discharging the same. Is fresh water engine and has never been in salt as I'm here in the Chicago area, but Do you think there is a clog in the water jacket? Thanks for your wonderful and informative videos!

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  3 роки тому

      Sometimes when we replace the water pump the tube going from the pump to the engine lose it seal at the engine. I would make sure it is not leaking there. We most always replace the grommet at the pump but not the upper one. Looking at the parts brake down I don't see a upper grommet on this motor. That tube has to seal at the top.

    • @Epressroom
      @Epressroom 3 роки тому +1

      @@OmFishing thanks, but it was flowing slow on the earmuffs prior to me replacing the entire water pump impeller assembly and after I put the new assembly in it's still a weak stream. Someone else said that maybe that water hose could be clogged with sediment, as I'm up in Chicago I guess I'll have to wait till the spring is now it's too cold to run it outside

    Great vid, Any difference in performance? Isn’t it better if the motor runs cooler? Cheers

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 роки тому +2

      Proper engine temperature is a critical to good engine operation.A outboard motor that runs to cool will experience Fouled spark plugs, poor or rough idle , loss of wide open throttle speed, excessive carbon deposits. It is important for the engine to reach the proper running temperature. I know that it seem like it would be good to run cool but it can be bad on the engine. Thanks for commenting and stay well.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 роки тому

      You can run your motor with out a temp switch, but if something happens to your water pump or the water intake gets blocked while you are running. It would most likely cause engine damage before you notice it was hot.

      If you want to go through the work. I would check the grommet on the bottom of the engine on the water tube. You would have to pull the engine out and unbolt the exhaust tube. That is about the only other place left for a restriction.

      You are right I think the water pump is weak. I had to put the muffs on it to make this video. I had it in a container full of water and it would not pick it up on its own. Once I give it a little water it would start working and stay working. After I shut it off it would not pick up again until I give it a shot of water with the muffs. It was like I had to prime it. If you look right at the end you see me give it a shot of water off the muffs and it starts working. Then it is picking the water up from the tank. I like your fish you are holding in the picture. Thanks for watching.
