Great, straightforward video. I'm in the process of changing the orings on my 1979 115 Johnson from my late father. It's actually also mounted on a glastron, mine is a 1980 SSV 167!
Sweet boat and I’m sure your grandfather is happy that you have it as he looks after from above ❤️🙏 Thank you for posting and this vid is very helpful. Stay awesome!
Great tips! Love the old Glastron! We had one when I was kid (60's) and you just don't see 'em around much anymore! I guess they're still building them but they have changed the iconic paint scheme a bit. Again, great tips!
Finally somebody with a video on the exact type of unit that I have to which I can see the shit that I thought was going to be needed is needed. I appreciate the video
Glad it helped you! That’s why I make my video. I just uploaded a video on the lower gear unit oil as well. Check that out too. It’s an important part of maintenance!
That was the perfect video that's exactly what I needs to see I'm about as green as the grass when it comes to these boats LOL thank you thank you very much and looking forward to more helpful hints.
Nice one mate! My 85 HP Yamaha tilt trim played up today. I was gunna' check our crab traps. & at the ramp the motor wouldn't go down. The hydraulic pump is running , and eventually dropped. I thot' lack of fluid! I know it's an Evinrude/Johnson but it is exactly the same as the Japanese rip off. I appreciate your vid especially the ATF fluid.
Do you happen to have a video on how to replace the trim motor (in case that is what I need to do)? I loved your video as I have an Evinrude VRO 140 (1985) (On a Glastron), so it looks very much like your boat engine.
Thanks! I'm about to tear into my 125 horsepower Force for the same problem... The shop told me they couldn't rebuild the pumps and it would be 6 or $700 for a used replacement unit...
Glad it helped! I believe most units have a manual release. So check into yours, I’d start with trim and tilt fluid and then move on to seals and rebuilding. If your hearing no motor pumping or trying to pump. That may be gone as well. Best of luck to you!
Very helpful. Question that maybe you can answer? My fill screw seems to be rusted tight. Any ideas on how to free it up? 1988 Johnson 88 SPL motor. Motor mount looks exactly like yours.
Try PB plaster and an impact screwdriver, but the chances are the fill screw will be damaged. Heat can sometimes work, but there should be a rubber gasket. So if you do use heat you’ll want to replace the screw and gasket.
@@ProjectComplete PB really is the best penetrant. And very good advice. I've been am mechanic for over 30 years and I would have given the exact same advice.
My system is a little different but it definitely sounds like that. I didn’t know if I should leave the cap off or not because the fluid was pouring out lol.
I don’t know your exact system, but generally during the flush part you leave the plug off. Fluid is supposed to come out during the flush. Once the lines and cylinders are clear of most of the air, then the final part is fill the reservoir to the max fill. The whole process is very similar to bleeding brakes.
I will gave to give this a try. I'm tired of doing it manually letting down and lifting up the motor. And also a question what do I use for lower unit to fill the gear oil?
Yes, that hydraulic system was actually from a another boat of the same year. Before it was just a manual trim tilt system. I had to wire everything from scratch from relays and fuses. It’s funny you mention lower gear unit. My next video is on lower gear unit maintenance. I typically use 80w-90 gear oil and change it once a year unless your noticing water getting into it.
I'm at seal kit do they contain the seals for the center hydraulic cylinder we have one from the same year bought that exact kit and it did not contain the main cylinders seals
I believe they include the seals for everything in the hydraulic trim and tilt unit. But I’m not 100% sure. I didn’t end up using all of the seals in the package.
This was a very informative video, thank you. My motor won't go down unless I open the side screw. However, the two lower pistons won't go down at all. Any thoughts?
Usually it’s one motor for the whole system. What you mentioned above is why I replaced my seals. Start with making sure the pistons aren’t seized and then replace seals and fluid.
@@ProjectComplete thanks. I was able to get it to go up and down by leaving the fill cap off, backing the relief screw out to lower it and lowering it. Then lraising it. I did this a few times and it would go down.
Hi man, my boat yesterday the trim tilt was working, and the next day I went to do some check the only think I can hear is noise and the trip tilt is not working, the engine is not going up or down, but the noise sounds like your boat when air was in there. What you suggest to do?
fyi if you dont have that special tool, you can use the blade from a dull chisel or screw driver and hammer the small holes in the losen direction to remove and tap it off and on, same as the old school sttuts on a car,
I only did that to remove the pin to the center hydraulic. It was attached to a beam on the exterior over hang of the house. It allowed me to raise and lower the motor without a second hand and get fine adjustments to reinsert the pin. If you are not replacing seals you don’t need to remove the pin or detach the hydraulic from the motor mount the standard safety catch on the motor is all you need. When you have to remove the pin, the motor has to raise past the safety catch. I just didn’t want it slamming back down on the safety catch when the pin get removed. When you are just checking and refilling fluid the motor needs to raise and lower freely.
My 1979 85 hp seals are leaking I can’t find the part and I’m not sure if that’s the proper term for the part? My mechanic can’t find any online but he said if I find the parts I could do it myself , can you help identify the part for me? It’s the circle thing with the 4 holes in it , he said that’s all I need to replace
my trim sounds like the pump is working but it won’t raise or lower at all, just makes noise and it’s full of fluid . could my seals be blown in my pistons ?
You don’t but, it’s not like an engine oil change. If it were me id try to drain as much as possible and replace. If they did it the correct way they should have used hydraulic fluid.
Well, I would start with a wire brush and good soaking of PB Blaster, let it sit for a while then try again with the tool. If the holes are stripped you could try drilling 3 new holes for the pins of the tool or even possibly hitting it counterclockwise with punch and hammer. Either way you will most likely destroy the old caps and seals. So prepare for that...
@@ProjectCompletegracias por tu respuesta,me refiero a cuando el motor está en la posición de arriba,al bajarlo con el trim hace movimientos bruscos,da muchos brincos!!!!
To remove the pistons. You use the pronged tool to remove the caps and they just slide out. There is nothing that holds them in other than the cap and o ring around the piston. Hope that helps!
Just refilled same tilt trim system but now when lifted all the way up the lift moter stay engaged. Have to disconnect battery to stop tilt motor from operating. What would cause this? Thanks!
@@ProjectComplete it is a thumb lever on the shifter. There is also a switch at the bow. I could attempt with bow switch to isolate shifter switch as issue.
Hmm, seems to be an electrical issue rather than a pump or hydraulic issue. I’d start with checking relays and fuses, then move on to the switch to make sure a connection isn’t sticking after the button is released. You could try jumping the switch to see if it stops when the jump wire is disconnected. If it does then you know it’s the switch. I also know some units have a max stop switch that shuts the pump off when it reaches maximum up or down tilt. Possibly that lever is broken or the wiring is corroded. Sorry I can’t be more help. I am by no means an electrical wizard, either way I’d start with the easiest and move to the harder eliminating one thing at a time.
I am not sure. It does come with 2 different pin sizes, but I’m not sure about the pin distances. It does fit on several different types models. So I would not be surprised if it does work for your model.
Are you referring to mine or yours? If we were talking about mine. It could be a couple of different things. The portion of the engine moving up and down was edited in fast forward. Which can make things look a like jumpy. Also the trim hydraulics move faster than the tilt hydraulics. So you’ll see it’s slow to move and then much faster once the tilt hydraulic kicks in. The trim hydraulics move slowly for fine tune while boating and the tilt hydraulic moves fast to raise the motor. Kind of like a second gear on a car. But really in person it wasn’t jumpy.

Yes, it’s possible the system is not holding pressure. It’s also possible that your pump is trying to pump, but not actually working.

nice and clear. .. but I saw another vedios tit the scrow

If the caps are corroded to no end what’s the best way to remove them. Holes on the caps are shallow and brittle when I use that specific tool
