i literally just had the same issues with over heating only i found the issue, after back flushing and disassembling the entire disassemble-able parts of the water flows i found my issue was fragmented impeller peices located in the lower unit directly from the impeller pump to the feed tube the pump goes to up about 9inches into the pipe was an entire 6 peices of rubber blades now my engine ran with water during months of running before i just got sick of never going over 2400rpm, back flushing alone couldnt get the fragments out, i ended up taking a long wire and bent a tiny hook in the end and pulled each peice out one at a time. my engine seemed to run water only causing overheating when the water pressure sensor was plugged in, yes in. but this just goes to show that somtimes you really need to look hard for those peices as black in a black pipe can be mistakenly overlooked. hope this helped :)
Use vinegar in a bucket that will flush out the corrosion in the galleries but keep an eye on the tell tail because the debris may clog the tell tail, but done on occasions will keep your motor clean.
Have a 60hp 2 stroke yamaha. Had a problem with the rubber grommets and seals not sealing on the water tube between the pump and tube. Odd place to have a problem but a zip tie tightened around the seal has held it snug against the top of the pump housing and stopped my overheat problems.
Great video, thank you!! Question: I have 1999 225 Mercury Optimax. I saw a video recently showed how a dirty strainer that filters water going to the air pump needed to be cleaned on a regular basis. I've owned this motor since it was new and have never head of the strainer, so I looked it up in the service manual. The service manual shows two strainers, one on the exhaust plate and the other on the top of the powerhead. I can't see the one on the top of the powerhead without removing a bunch of stuff and the one on the exhaust plate appears to be plugged with no water connection. Since these cool the air pump and the air pump has no heat alarm, I am concerned that I may be neglecting a preventive measure that should be taken care of. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you, sir, for the video, there's supposed to be a strainer that is located above the water pump further up in the housing , I was hoping you would talk about this. Cause I'm trying to figure out how to access it. I have a 2000 Mercury 225 EFI.
My impeller was destroyed. Most of the pieces felt out of the bottom. But I have a feeling some have been clogged above. How could I get them out? Use shop vac with straw attached?
Compressed air thru all of the intake vents at the bottom, remove the thermostat and blow. Do the same thing for the pee hole. You need to get all the pieces out or it will block the system.
Hello. Thanks for the video. We have an 1970, 70 h.p. Chrysler engine. We have changed the impeller and it is still getting hot and it does not spit out much water. Could you tell me where my thermostat is? Thank you.
Great video, my question is, my impeller blades were all sheared off, and there was not much inside when I took it apart, does that mean it is further inside the engine ? The motor is a 25hp 4 stroke yahama 2003.
Great video, I thought you may also adress deflectors that swell on some manufacturers V6's and don't let water run down to lower cylinders and usually cause a overheat horn under throttle. Not a every day issue, but happens. Anyways great video!
Hi i changed thermostat on my outboard, changed new impeller..pee like a dream..changed carb as i suspected the carb, the powerhead gasket has been changed ,checked cylinder adjustments and gaps and still overheating..changed engine oil...3 5hp mercury 4 stroke..almost new hence i dont suspect anymote gasket blown..any suggestion what i have to look at...not changing the gear oil and not opening it...any suggestion what to look at for more to sort out this overheating ..thanks in advance..
Hello can i ask something i have a 25ph yamaha autolube a 3 cilinder outboard. When am running the outboard after 2 munites s getting slow down by self and a red light s get on. What can be the reason of that light?
I’ve replaced the water pump, the thermostat, and the poppet. Water is flowing out the tail tell and it has never not flowed out. But this year, the motor goes into limp mode when I run at over 4500 rpm for more than a few minutes. It runs fine for long periods of time if I keep it below 4500…over an hour with no problem. Could it be a false alarm from the temperature sending unit?
new impeller on my 25 evenrude. 92, 2 cycle. removed the broken thermostat. Water isnt flowing through the pee hole. Engine 0verheating. Do I remove the side plate to check for stoppage? This plate is situated where the pee hole is before going through the hose that feeds to the mounted pee thingy on the bottom side.
I Have a 1997 Merc 50hp 4 stroke. Bought the boat in 2000. I've had this problem for quite some time Only when motor is idling for about 30-40 seconds I get and ALARM buzzer. It does have a SOLID stream of water coming out the discharge outlet so the impeller is sending water through the engine. So thinking the cooling ok. I thought maybe its a low oil buzzer. Checked that and oil is full. All I have to do is turn the key off and restart and its all ready to go. If I continue to idol the buzzer goes off again after a while. no buzzer at any time other than idling . I change the oil regularly and someone told me there may be a RESET oil change timer that may need to be reset. But have no idea how to reset it ?? Is that a possibility ? Thanks for any help on this manner. Dale
Figure it out? I have a 40hp merc doing the exact same thing right now.. will run strong across the lake with water existing telltale and when you slow to idle it'll alarm solid..
@@zellerized Yes, Changed the impeller and the alarm stopped going off. The old impeller did not look bad but was a little more flexible than the new one. 1998 yamaha 250 2 stroke, saltwater series: new impeller, cylender heads removed and interior brush cleaned. when water is applied and engine running water doesn't make up to the thermostats and engine overheats. water comes out the tail tell. pop valve is good. i replaced the lower unit last year. plese help.

I have a 20 HP 4-stroke Yamaha outboard. every month, I run the motor using a deep bucket. Last month, the bucket had a hole in it and it ran dry. See this is a little late but remove your thermostat see if it’s getting water if not your water tube might be damaged not allowing the water from the pump into the block
My 1998 Vmax over heating alarm sounds after it has been trimmed up for a few minutes. The intake is still under water and pushing water out the exit port. Not sure what might be causing this.
Double spark maybe? Does your engine stop suddenly the movement from the starting motor when you try to start the engine? An out of time spark causes an explosion that stops the movement of the heavy flywheel? Heating may occur if an out of time spark reaches a cylinder besides the right in time spark works alright. Replacing the two ignition units that send voltage to each coil may solve the problem.
