    Well, that was a lot of negativity in a short video. Spain is a very safe Western country, but being an obnoxious foreigner may attract pickpocketers and beggars. Just, please, don’t generalize so much, you’re making it sound like it’s an awful place to visit or live. I, personally, never encountered a bathroom without soap and toilet paper, so I don’t really know where you actually stayed in Madrid for you to have this experience. The gypsies are a world-wide problem, it’s not only related to Spain. I’m sorry, but I for one, do not agree with your description of Spain here. People are super friendly, service is usually great and it’s a very safe country overall.

      I was there for 2 months. The food was bad 80% of the time it was poor quality, the service was horrible and most people were not friendly at all. I'm a very friendly person and was very disappointed, all over Spain. But there were cities near the water that were friendlier, so I'll stick to those in the future and have to cook healthy food myself.

    Living un Madrid for almost 9 years and I’ve never been pickpocketed. Just need to be awared of gypsies, romanians, morrocans, and occasionally older gentleman. You just have to know how to detect them, it's easy. Not a big problem for local people, just for clueless tourists. Spain is a very safe country, lot more than US.

    My wife and I went Granada Spain, we loved it there. Spanish people were so nice and friendly. The only thing we did not enjoy was the food. We chose Turkish and Arabic restaurants instead. Everything else was super nice. As for pickpockets, they are everywhere and in every touristic location in any country. Local people are victims too. Love from Iraq to the lovely Spanish people.

    I have a question...if Americans who work there are expected to carry identifying papers that show they are allowed to work there as well as your passport (because that has a photo)...isn't that scary to carry all those important documents when pickpockets are so prevalent? I am stressed from here thinking about losing vital documents! How vigilant can you be? These pickpocketers are so skilled you can be brushed by someone in a crowd and not really feel their hand in your pocket or purse.

    • @KatTheo
      @KatTheo  7 років тому +4

      I personally do not carry my passport and personal information with me because I have heard too many horror stories and quite frankly just don't need. Foreigners are supposed to carry identification at all times with them but no one ever asks for it. I only carry my passport when I am going to the bank or airport. If not all that stays at home and I suggest you do the same. Just carry minimal amounts of cash with you to prevent huge devastation, be overly vigilant and NEVER PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR POCKETS!! and you will be good:)

    • @hipretty
      @hipretty 7 років тому +3

      Thank you SO much for replying. That is a big relief! Part of my worries were about losing legal documents in a foreign country moreso than losing huge amounts of cash!

    I've never had any problems with pick pockets after living in Zaragoza for two years (yet), but perhaps that has something to do with you being in Madrid and/or speaking English, looking foreign ect. Also normally it's the gypsies who pickpocket, not your normal Spaniard. Now, one thing that for me was a culture shock was the number of beggars and how quick they harass you if they think you're foreign. They have quite the scam going on, or those who control parking lots and if you don't pay them some change, will break your side mirror or something.. But, besides all the petty crime like that, Spain is a super safe country, hardly comparable to the US and it still shocks me how much safer it is.

    • @kennalime5644
      @kennalime5644 6 років тому

      Just tell them you don´t have cash and that you will pay them when you are back, then when you are back you can also tell them that you don´t have any cash. Then you can go with your car without paying, is not obligatory to pay anything to those people and I encourage you not to do it so :)

So for asia i want to hear about, What your doing there, how people react to you in passing, the social/party atmosphere, how you made friends, the different races you see if any, How you found housing, the average prices for decent housing,possibly an apartment tour even if its just your room, does housing come furnished, what are the main differences in their housing and the US or Spain, How the wifi?, comparisons between Asia and Spain, Visa process, what kind of hair products are available, how is vegan life in asia,what is grocery shopping life like(farmers market style or walmart style?) if you could keep an eye out for organic products and tell us what the availability is ( all natural body wash, shampoo, lotion, oils ect.) the normal dress style, swear/cursing culture, what you thought itd be like vs. what its like, maybe your top five agricultural favs, top five natural landscape sights, are there any African American influence in music, dance, or/and slang, do you miss home, if so what do you do to get over it, will you be traveling throughout asia, difference between south and north parts of the country, how often do you visit home (unless you in korea lol), AfroAMerican or/and just American you encounter. ok *sign* im done lol :)

    About people not having a good attitude when they're servicing you I find that to be true also in Puerto Rico where I live. I am Puerto Rican but not born and raised in Puerto Rico. But I've been living on the island for three years now. I've noticed that if I go to a place where I need to be serviced and if I suck up to them I get so much better attention, for example I'll say, hello my love how are you? You look so nice in that yellow blouse, listen, can you help me? I need such and such or so and so. And I immediately notice their attitude changes. I hate sucking up but it works. And sometimes I really mean it when I tell them other times well...

    One hilarious problem I repeatedly encountered in Spain was public bathroom lights that were on timers, so once you were on the toilet the bathroom would go dark! And you'd have to flail your arms around on the toilet to get the sensors to pick up the motion and turn the lights back on, which didn't always work. 😂 Still cracks me up a year later.

    I don’t know if this is true but it seems that you don’t really like Spain. And about the bathroom thing I have never gone to a bathroom in Madrid that didn’t have toilet paper. I have no clue where you went. Also, you talk about Spain as it’s not a Western Country, it is. And I’ve lived 11 years in Spain and I have never been pickpocketed once, that’s only in the most touristy areas. I’ve been pickpocketed 2 times in New York and none in Spain. Otherwise I think the advice is very good, just a little exaggerated

    1) No. don't be overly friendly, because they will see that you are faking it. Be nice and kind. Never arrogant or superior, and don't get angry. They will never forgive you for it. Are we the only ones that despise nasty behavior?. 2) Stop comparing the ways of your country vs. the ways of Spain. Just adjust. You have to adapt to Spain, not Spaniards to you. 3) Of course you have to learn Spanish, it is our language. Don't Spaniards have to learn English when in Anglosaxons countries?. 4) Never leave your phone on a restaurant table, or your bag in the back of your chair, or on an empty chair besides you in the terraza of a bar. Wear you bag not on you shoulder, but across your body (from shoulder to hip). Probably while you are looking around, some pickpockets are already targetting you. I do that, everywhere of the world, not only Spain.

    Hi Kat! Thanks for sharing these tips, I wouldn't have thought that I need to be so careful with pick-pocketers and schemes to get your stuff robbed. I am moving to Spain in the begining of March and am wondering what I should do about cell phone service/data, as well as how to go about opening a bank account (if I have to at all) while I'm there. Thank you!

    I'm seriously considering teaching in Madrid this September and I will be doing it through a TEFL program that allows me to take Spanish classes as I teach.
    With the whole pick pocketing thing would you say you can carry a purse? Because in America we're known for having large purses and I have 2 (one of which is my Tory Burch that I use ALL the time) and I'm wondering if I can still use them?
    I always keep my makeup on hand and I'd be ready to fight if my purse and makeup were stolen for a few dollars. I don't keep heavy cash on me because I was once held up at gun point so I'm curious about purse size now.

    • @KatTheo
      @KatTheo  7 років тому

      I think a big purse is okay if you always have your hand over the zipper. I guess its just more annoying to always keep up with it. whereas a small one is easier to manage.

      Jaime Fernandez I'm from Chicago in the US so I'm not going to be as culture shocked in terms of crime as some might be. The program I'm going to have is in Madrid and I'd prefer to be in a larger city since that's what I'm used to. At least at first and once I get used to everything and know the areas and can speak fluently then maybe moving out of the city will be my option

    • @BlairWaldorf2013
      @BlairWaldorf2013 7 років тому +1

      Jaime Fernandez we can get -20 in windchill so we're pretty used to cold weather.
      I'm African American so I'm curious if people are not welcoming because some people say they're not and others say they are. Now I'm from America so racism on the whole is not something I'm new to but if I'm moving for 12 months I'd like to move somewhere that isn't like the US in that regard

    • @BlairWaldorf2013
      @BlairWaldorf2013 7 років тому

      Jaime Fernandez...thanks for your insights. This would be my first time moving abroad and I want to move somewhere that is culturally engaging and since I want to teach English Madrid offers a program where I can teach English and learn Spanish in a classroom setting and it offers other components that will help me get acclimated to a new country.
      I want to live in Europe for potentially 2-3yrs so I'm trying to invest in a country that will have a good culture and standard of living.

    Do you mean your English weren't intermediate, thus low and your Spanish weren't either? Is it only in Madrid and Barcelona you have pickpockets or do you have them for example in Valencia also.

    • @KatTheo
      @KatTheo  6 років тому

      Sorry I do not understand your first question but I can only speak about Madrid and Barcelona because that is where I've lived. Valencia should be fine

    • @1985ccc
      @1985ccc 6 років тому

      And if it is English you mean, is it not important to have a good level of Spanish? Which one is more important for the cities you visited? I guess in Barcelona it is English since their main language is Catalan and Barcelona is verry internationally. But what language is important for Madrid?

    "A Western thing"...really? Even for an American this is pretty dense. Spain was (I'm not Spanish) part of the 'West' when America was just a dusty no-mans land with bears picking off near stone-age people from their huts. Come on now! Please slow (way) and don't slur your words. Hard to understand even as a native speaker! Lots of good tips though, thank you.

      No toilette paper? Where were you? In a nightclub? If there's no toilette paper, maybe it's over, so go to the owner and ask him for more.
      The fact that you said that we raise our kids to steal people is a lil bit meh... It's like saying that black people in USA raise their kids to be criminals...
      And about pickpocketting, well go around Europe (tbh the world) visit touristic areas and just be like you are in US --> you gonna be spotted from 100 miles away and seen as an easy target.
      Im sorry baby but imo you are misleading a lot with these kind of statements.
