  • Our 4 experiences as language assistants are completely different (primary vs secondary, bilingual vs non bilingual, location etc.) and we hope that they will be able to tell you everything you need to know about being a language assistant in Spain. We specificially work in Madrid but it will be very similar across most regions!
    In part 1, we talk about what it’s like teaching abroad during the pandemic, the pros and cons and what it’s like teaching with masks and the difficulties there.
    You don’t have to have any level of Spanish for this job and we discuss whether it’s sensible to have 0 knowledge of Spanish and why knowing Spanish can be better and where it is necessary.
    We also talk about the differences between being a language assistant in a primary vs a secondary school and which is better for you.
    Stay tuned and subscribe for PART 2, which discusses the differences between working a bilingual/non-bilingual school, being placed anywhere around the region and what it’s like travelling to work outside of the capital and the compulsory MOOC course.

    I love your videos I’m actually thinking about teaching in Spain in the Madrid area would you be able to tell me what are the best towns to live in? I’m trying to put my preferences for places but I’m not really knowledgeable on the Madrid area

      Hey! In all honesty, wherever you're placed you can live in the centre and commute because Madrid's not that big and is really well-connected transport wise. As far as living in towns I'm not sure which is best because I lived in the capital and really enjoyed the lifestyle in the city vs being in a town

    Thanks for sharing your experiences and a very informative video! Quick question; I noted that some of you worked with older students and others younger students. If you had a preference, which age cohort would you prefer to teach and why? Thanks!

    • @aimeeweekestravels
      @aimeeweekestravels  3 роки тому +1

      I think it's really hard to say because they're so different and both come with their pros and cons and I would have loved to experience working with older kids. But honestly, I wouldn't trade my experience of working with the younger kids. It's really rewarding seeing them grow in their language because they're not going as advanced, they do really silly funny things and they really look up to you! For me, it felt like less work with a high reward

      @@aimeeweekestravels thanks for sharing your insights, it really helps. I was thinking of working with older students as a language assistant since I have more experience with teaching them. Older students tend to have longer attention spans, but you definitely have to earn their trust and cater to their interests. The possibility of working with younger students and helping them develop their rudimentary english skills seems more appealing...I’ll have to think this through lol.

    • @aimeeweekestravels
      @aimeeweekestravels  3 роки тому

      Hello!! We all applied through the British Council as that's quite a popular one to use from the UK so I'm not too sure of any other programmes! I have heard a few people come through with BEDA and Meddeas but I don't know much about them to be honest. There's a Facebook page called 'Auxiliares en Madrid' where loads of people write about their experiences so maybe it might be useful for you to get more info about them there!

    If you don’t mind could you please tell me what course you did to work as a language teacher in Spain. I’m actually a non native English speaker (from India), May I know how can I work there as a language teacher as I’m already doing my TEFL/TESOL course.
    It would really helpful if you reply to my comment.

      Hi!! I used the programme with the British Council but I'm not too familiar with how to do it if you are not a native speaker. Perhaps you have to do it directly through schools or job postings? I found some links with people looking for TEFL teachers for the next year. Let me know if this helps you!

    Hey, I'm planning on applying and I was wondering if you know of anyone who has tattoos on the programme? I have a few small ones on my lower arms and a biggish one on my shoulder (but a short sleeved top would cover it). Id love to work with primary school kids but I'm not sure if I'd be allowed to because of the tattoos

    • @aimeeweekestravels
      @aimeeweekestravels  2 роки тому +2

      Hi! Yes my colleague actually had tattoos although she did tried to cover them. But towards the end of the year we actually found out from a teacher that if you work in a state school you’re literally allowed to wear whatever you want including tattoos and piercings and no one is allowed to complain! That was a small culture shock 😂
