I have installed rockbox on it. In fact, you should be able to dual boot rockbox and the native iPod OS on several iPod models, and switch between them by keeping certain buttons pressed during the startup of the device. I decided to keep both because the original iPod OS has a simpler, cleaner, smoother interface, but rockbox was the only way I could find to bypass the loud volume limitation enforced on iPods sold in the EU at the time. In every meaningful metric, this hackPod is definitely an upgrade. *"Here comes the big, hairy but"* BUTT, one of my favorite aspects of my old iPod was the sound of that mechanical hard drive. Something about that winding-down sound was incredibly satisfying.
I own and flashed a few iPod videos, classics and minis, however I daily drive an iPod Shuffle 1, sometimes a Shuffle 4. When you have 90 gigs of songs, choosing songs for daily commute really becomes a time wasting thing. Then you’ll appreciate the convenience of the Shuffle because it’s just plug and play, giving you no choices.
I've been running a modded iPod 7th gen for years now. I love having my music and podcasts separate from my phone. I'm using the 3000mAh battery and the iFlash Quad with ~900GB with the intent to expand to 2TB in the future
the lost details in the back panel print from pcbway is probably because it was automatically post processed with acetone vapors or alcohol vapors (depending on what kind of plastic they printed it in), the acetone/alcohol will dissolve the surface a tiny bit making it lose some of that detailing you noticed on your print and depending on how the print was oriented when it was dried out, the acetone/alcohol will deposit the dissolved plastic where it sat on the print
Except if you listen to tons of music and over thousands of artists Spotify can provide that. I wish Spotify made a physical MP3 or something. I know they did that car thing but that failed and it wasn’t really a music device
Oh man, I STILL remember my old Video iPod and eventually switching up to a color iPhone. I don’t think I still have it-or it’s in storage somewhere-but I loved that thing. This was an exciting project for sure.
Replacing the nostalgic cold feeling of the stainless steel back and adding the bluetooth in my opinion is a crime to the essence of these childhood gems. It feels wrong. I'm also against the transparent everything trend going on but oh well. Completely changing the premium feeling of cold solid steel is the biggest one.
Nah, steel enclosures look good only at first. Then it turns into a mosaic of scratches and dents pretty quickly. Especially on a device that will be your pocket. It's the same as with piano black finishes. Looks good in promo photos, but turns to crap the instant you turn your back.
@AmartharDrakestone there are etching chemicals to add a frosted finish to metals, you can laminate the housing to keep the durability of stainless steel while avoiding permanent scratches, some people appreciate the patina/scratches/wear and tear that occurs naturally. Or, and hear me out on this one, you take good care of things that you want to keep! Especially something that reminds you of good memories.
Get the 80gb iPod 5.5 because it has a thick back to accommodate the larger battery and other widgets. The 30gb version has a thicker back. Alternatively you can just purchase aftermarket backs.
just for your information... visual impaired people use rockbox because can be added a sound file that reproduce all the menus, and that file can be generated for different languages. Some of my friends use it.
Wish I had the skill to add Bluetooth and usb-c charging but with my luck I’d have my iPod classic sitting around for weeks waiting for replacement parts. Amazing work!
I'd recommend either scoring and snapping instead of the rotary tool for chopping circuit boards, or the least doing it outside. You don't want fiberglass dust to go all over your workshop!
Seeing you mess around with Rockbox was nostalgic. Back in HS, I had the 5th gen iPod video. There wasn't much modding to do back then, but I remember costuming the UI with it, it was so cool. I wish I still had that thing, I've been thinking it would be fun to get an iPod again and upgrade it, although I don't have the skills to do anything too crazy lol. I still even have my external HDD with my crazy huge collection of mp3s I hoarded.
I bought an iPod 5 off that same site. I use current Apple AirPod max headphones with a Bluetooth receiver Velcro’d to the back. Having the Bluetooth mod would be awesome!
I like that LTT doesn't care that a different precision set was used throughout the video. Other sponsors would have a clause in their contracts prohibiting competing brands from appearing in the video.
These things were a game changer on deployments going away from huge DVD/CD wallet to 3 inch magic rectangle saved so much room. I used mine for almost 10 years until it died.
LTT sponsorship on a non-Linus video wasn't something i expected, congrats on becoming honorary LMG now, joking aside, I'm glad the iPod & dedicated media players are having a resurgence
I’m giving my 5th Gen iPod to my son for Christmas. He’s at the age where he’s starting to appreciate music and wants to listen to it on his own. Was going to try Rockbox but I haven’t changed out the hard drive and it runs dog slow on it. I forgot how painful iTunes is to transfer music onto the iPod. Have to convert almost all of it to mp3 since they’re in flac.
I love projects like this. Actual effort and sharing with comunity. Not some indian guy who made "200% efficient 3 phase inverter out of only 3 transistors and 3 resistors that energy compnies dont want you to see" or 2-3 AliExpress blocks wired together with some plugs and thrown in a plastic box.
Very interesting, when I first saw this video I thought "man I would love to do everything here if only iTunes wasn't such a hassle" but then you showed the alternative OS and that speech on music freedom. I agree with everything and congratulate you for inspiring me and other people to do the same
22:16 I stopped using iTunes a long time ago even when using the stock firmware of the iPod. I always used a program called Copy Trans, allowing to sync the files to the iPod without using iTunes. Of course you still require the drivers that iTunes provides, but that’s a very minor detail that’s not bugging me at all.
I've done a few mods to my iPod Photo many years ago. It was great until I wanted more functionality so, now I just use an "old" phone that's 15 years newer. It has a big bright touch screen, built in speaker, a million audio players and apps (real games if wanted), haptic and audio feedback, Bluetooth, more space (hot swappable), much better battery, and more. Best part, it didn't cost me a dime. 😁💪
If you’re gonna have your music as audio files on a device, both android phones and iPhones still have MP3 functionality where you can just put the files into the phones and have the phone work like an mp3 player instead of having to stream music
This was an amazing build and a suggestion maybe figure out a way to turn on and off the Bluetooth board right now it sounds like it's automatically turning on with the hold switch which anyone can access it upon turning on
I think there's a modern market for a high-end music player with local storage... Honestly, I'd love for Apple to make a new iPod Touch with lots of storage. But even if not Apple, I'd like to see someone else do something similar to this: melding the "old" with the "new".
My middle finger to Spotify was setting up a Jellyfin server with all of my music as FLACs and then using Finamp on my phone which connects to it and can even download and transcode music for offline playback. And since it's proxied via a VPS to the outside Internet I can listen to my music wherever there is an Internet browser. However having a physical device only dedicated to music is also nice.
Damn, another great video! Love how you're assembling clear plastic 3D cases for all the builds.... I mean, clear case N64, Gameboy, PSP, and now iPod! How about Nintendo DS for the next video?
U doin a great job at soldering it self but u shoul change solder u using and lower temperatures. As perfect example - solder after getting cold shoul be shiny almost like a mirror. U can achieve it with just great solder and lower temps. Try to find "Kaina Blue 63/37" solder. It's melting point just around 290C and have great rosin core.
I'm probably dumb but I'm curious about the Bluetooth mod. Because with, for example, a smartphone you would have to go to the Bluetooth settings and pick WHICH device you wanted to connect to, but with this it's just a button you press. Does it just connect to the closest bluetooth device in pairing mode? What if there are multiple devices within range that are in pairing mode? Does the custom OS add custom Bluetooth settings? I have a lotta questions-

Not a fan of the full clear shell you have on this, but I definitely like the storage swap since the full-size iPods still relied on an HDD - the newly-introduced iPod Nano relied on flash storage. The USB type-C swap, though, is definitely needed, too, since compatible charging cables are getting harder to find. Though your other mods took the iPod 5th gen and made it the thickness of the iPod 1st gen.
or just put your mp3s on your phone...
@@thomgizziz I have a Plex media server and use the Plex app on my phone via a self-hosted VPN. It's served my wife and I well on road trips since I first set that up.
@@thomgizziz or just host navidrome or any other music server yourself...
@@thomgizziz I hope you get permanently banned from Earth
In every meaningful metric, this hackPod is definitely an upgrade. *"Here comes the big, hairy but"* BUTT, one of my favorite aspects of my old iPod was the sound of that mechanical hard drive. Something about that winding-down sound was incredibly satisfying.
Awesome loved the video. How about adding a wireless charging coil to the back of that bad boy.
Hughjeffry already did this mod. Its so cool😊
Totally, check out my PSP video if you want to see how!
20:21 BEST Commercial of all TIME! I bought LOTS of SONY products because of that advert! Excellent work, Zac! Cool build!
Hey! I wanted that older cable! 13:21
I hope he didn’t really throw out the cable, not responsible e-waste.
Two videos within a week! Wow.
Money's tight.
Right
I've been running a modded iPod 7th gen for years now. I love having my music and podcasts separate from my phone. I'm using the 3000mAh battery and the iFlash Quad with ~900GB with the intent to expand to 2TB in the future
All I think I'd dank pods video on making a modern iPod. Well done this is alot crazier
I have been thinking about building something like this for many years now, glad to see someone actually did it!
Now you need to have dankpods review it.
Next, do Zune. It would be absolutely amazing to see new Zune mods after all these years
LTT supporting youtubers is wonderful
I agree ;)
the lost details in the back panel print from pcbway is probably because it was automatically post processed with acetone vapors or alcohol vapors (depending on what kind of plastic they printed it in), the acetone/alcohol will dissolve the surface a tiny bit making it lose some of that detailing you noticed on your print and depending on how the print was oriented when it was dried out, the acetone/alcohol will deposit the dissolved plastic where it sat on the print
My iPod is one of my most treasured possessions and I still use it constantly. It's way better than Spotify.
Micro soldering blows my mind, great skills!
I LOVE the solution that you came up with to solve Bluetooth pairing. Awesome work!
Yes! RockBox _does_ totally rock. I have it on multiple devices and it works fine with everything I have.
0:39 MP3 players out here like, "Am I a joke to you??"
Get the 80gb iPod 5.5 because it has a thick back to accommodate the larger battery and other widgets. The 30gb version has a thicker back. Alternatively you can just purchase aftermarket backs.
I had a Zune... 🤣
Oh man.. I had a Creative zen nomad jukebox NX in high school and was always jealous of the iPod kids, great throwback! 0:57
Theseus just called, he wants his ship back.
Fantastic comment, internet person.
just for your information... visual impaired people use rockbox because can be added a sound file that reproduce all the menus, and that file can be generated for different languages. Some of my friends use it.
Very nice project. One last thing is missing: wireless charging...
You just Frankenstein that ipod. The best build OG devices with modern tech.
These videos, I promise, are among the greatest available on UA-cam.
When I was much younger, I wanted this iPod since I always liked the form factor. Now I really want THIS one.
These things were a game changer on deployments going away from huge DVD/CD wallet to 3 inch magic rectangle saved so much room. I used mine for almost 10 years until it died.
LTT sponsorship on a non-Linus video wasn't something i expected, congrats on becoming honorary LMG
now, joking aside, I'm glad the iPod & dedicated media players are having a resurgence
also, is a personal taste thing, but i feel for iPods the full clear doesn't fully work, maybe frosted white/color or solid metallic
Have to convert almost all of it to mp3 since they’re in flac.
rockbox is an absolute must. had one of these ipods back in the day and itunes was always horrible so i put rockbox on it and never looked back.
Got a good recommendation after this

I built an Ultrawide DS ... a DIY Steam Deck thingy. /@MarcinPlaza
Very interesting, when I first saw this video I thought "man I would love to do everything here if only iTunes wasn't such a hassle" but then you showed the alternative OS and that speech on music freedom. I agree with everything and congratulate you for inspiring me and other people to do the same
22:16
I stopped using iTunes a long time ago even when using the stock firmware of the iPod.
Fun fact: In iTunes the icon for Artists is actually a rendering of Bono from U2.
Cool build.
This is the conformation I needed to do this work to my ipod classic. This is legit perfect.
I'll never agree that transparent electronics look good, but I do love the mods! Well done
Dude, you and Doug DeMuro need to do a video together ASAP. Glad I stumbled onto these videos, but the two of you would be magic, UA-cam magic.
If you’re gonna have your music as audio files on a device, both android phones and iPhones still have MP3 functionality where you can just put the files into the phones and have the phone work like an mp3 player instead of having to stream music
I LOVE transparent electronics. This is amazing.
The birth of the mythical super nugget!
LTT sponsorship is so strange but strangely so welcome at this stage ✌🏻
Wonderful soldering job. Wish I had the chance to do this kind of soldering at work, but they have me doing stupid easy stuff.
This was an amazing build and a suggestion maybe figure out a way to turn on and off the Bluetooth board right now it sounds like it's automatically turning on with the hold switch which anyone can access it upon turning on
when you said "this" at 6:50.... this guy is the tech doug demuro
The combination hold switch/bluetooth pairing button is so perfect and elegant, love it!
20:24 you missed the chance to use some bambu lab effect sheets
I'm probably dumb but I'm curious about the Bluetooth mod. Because with, for example, a smartphone you would have to go to the Bluetooth settings and pick WHICH device you wanted to connect to, but with this it's just a button you press. Does it just connect to the closest bluetooth device in pairing mode? What if there are multiple devices within range that are in pairing mode? Does the custom OS add custom Bluetooth settings? I have a lotta questions-
That is a throwback. I never owned an iPod just the generic MP3 players. What fun!
