  • His smile fair as spring, as towards him he draws you;
    His tongue sharp and silvery as he implores you.
    Your wishes he grants, as he swears to adore you,
    Gold, silver, jewels - he lays riches before you.
    Dues need be repaid and he will come for you
    All to reclaim, no smile to console you.
    He'll snare you in bonds, eyes glowing afire
    To gore and torment you till the stars expire!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    One of the most haunting and mysterious characters of the Witcher Games gets his Extended Theme Mix: Gaunter o' Dim, also known as Master Mirror and Man of Glass. A shady being that will grant your wishes - for the prize of your soul!

      I wouldn't call O'Dimm the devil, sure he enjoy torturing people, but only for those that deserve it, and even when he lose, he still wins, even if you save Von Everic, he recovers his feelings and the only that he could feel was pain and suffering for those that he lose, he would be drowning in his own misery the rest of his life, if you are good and honest, O'Dimm wont come for you, but if you are selfish, arrogant, brutal and ruthless, he surely would come, if you are lucky, he only would curse you, if you are unlucky, he would offer you a deal for your soul and would trick you and made you think that you have the upper hand, when he in control all the time.

      @@TheKeyser94 What did the professor do to deserve his fate? What did Iris do? The friendly drunk man? The Wight's victims? He doesn't just torture the human who signed his pact or did bad act, he goes after everyone the person interacts with and anyone who annoys him to satiate his sadism. No, Gaunter is evil, THE evil and he relishes torturing human lives. He even has a creepy song. I mean, come on?

      @@hueylongdong347 No one call Mephistopheles a saint, but O'Dimm only cares to play with very bad people, to people that call his attention, like the professor, and toy with him, and Iris is not innocent either, she was there making part of the deal with Von Everec, she was the added the clause that to the deal to be finish they needed to be in the surface of the moon. But call him this kind of characters "evil" when they do this kind of things for worse people, like Von Everec, being to simplistic, Von Everec was a warlord, he pillage and killed, either way if you "save" him or let O'Dimm take his soul, O'Dimm would win, if you "save" him, Von Everec, would recuperate his feelings, and would feel guilt and sorrow the rest of his life for all the lives that he had taken, doing one thing or another is irrelevant because either way O'Dimm would win, I think that make him live is the worst punishment that only letting O'Dimm take his soul.

      @@TheKeyser94 Professor was tasked with doing a job and O'Dimm mentally tortured him for it. He called for Gaunter O'Dimm's attention like a woman with a short skirt calls to be raped. Where is it stated that Iris partook in the blood pact? It was between Olgierd and O'Dimm. Gaunter IS evil because he casually murders a drunk man for simply interupting him. The people Olgierd has killed pale in comparison to the ones Gaunter O'Dimm has. Need I remind you that after Gaunter transformed Marlene into a monster, it would cause the deaths of countless innocent peasants in the Trastemara area? Since O'Dimm is ancient, he has done this countless times.
      Don't act like Gaunter O'Dimm tortures and hurts people because they deserve it, many in fact don't. He willfully and maliciously conspires to cause suffering to people that might be spared. And he does this because he is a degenerate monster in human flesh that feeds on the pain and suffering of others. O'Dimm has a scienter - he knows full well that his contracts hurt people further. Even if their wording is vague, their intent is clear but Gaunter twists peoples words because he enjoys ruining lives. He is like an adult who gives a gun to child with the intent that the child would eventually end up shooting himself and others. He is fully responsible for what happens to the people he bestows his unnatural "gifts" upon.
      Gaunter doesn't win if Geralt saves Olgierd. Mirror wants only one thing - human souls. For him, pain to a soul is simply like a crunchy crust to a bread. If he doesn't get to feast on the person's soul, he automatically loses. Whatever Olgierd further suffers further, guilt or whatnot, is irrelevant because O'Dimm cannot claim him.

    The scariest part is that if you choose to help Olgierd and "beat" Gaunter at his own game, you have just made an enemy of the most powerful (to the best of our knowledge) being in the witcher-verse. Another scary part is, as far as I understand, he chooses to be bound by the rules of the "game" as it would be boring otherwise, so by that line of logic, when you "beat" him at his game, he literally just chooses to walk away, and come back another time.

      @giocommentary 2 роки тому +80

      i personally think its more then just 'walking away' i think the scary part is not the absolute laws of his power and deals, but the way he manipulates us, like a trickster.
      I think that is also the core of his power, he in a way can't lie because he is bound by the contract/deal himself.
      But knowledge is power, and words can be a fickle thing but with Gaunter, words are law, like self fulfilling prophecy's.

    • @PellosMaxhthc
      @PellosMaxhthc 2 роки тому +28

      @@giocommentary That is also interesting and quite plausible, although I’m leaning towards the theory that he chooses to “bind” himself by his own rules, meaning he wields power that could destroy us (the player) at any moment, but chooses not to as it would not be fun.
      He is in all possibility an ancient being who has been around for who knows how long, when you have the laws of time/space, life/death and quite possibly unlimited life at your fingertips, things presumably become really boring.
      I do also believe that he is not an absolute being, in the full sense of a God (an in omnipotent/omniscient/perfect). He’s more than likely some sort of demon or lesser God.
      Just like Loki was a trickster in Norse mythology, but was not nearly as strong as Thor or Odin and many other gods.

    • @DeutscherDummer
      @DeutscherDummer 11 місяців тому

      I know I'm picking on an older comment here, but one of the great things about O'Dimm is that he has a solid amount of lines and scenes, but not too much (in comparison to other well-written characters like Solas from Dragon Age or Kreia from KoTOR 2). He is amazingly presented, but I'm not sure if "well-written" is the most fitting term here. Us not knowing much about him, about the details of his personality, powers and story/lore make him so much more exciting and menacing. We get hints, and our fantasy fills the rest with stories about evil we encountered in other media. On the other hand, I guess them knowing when to stop giving exposition, when to stop writing, also counts as "well-written".

      One of the main problems is that the Wild Hunt's strength is, mostly, in numbers. They were big, bulky and had super human strength and only few could freeze everything. That's it. Gaunter could single-handedly, instantly, wipe out the Wild Hunt if he so desired. Detlaff was one of the more powerful vampires, and he could probably rip those giant, slow, armored elves a new one with vampiric agility. Hell. Detlaff and Regis could probably wipe out the Wild Hunt albeit not was easily as Gaunter.

Gaunter takes pleasure in ruining humans lives but he has his reasons for it. Unlike Geralt someone with pure and noble intentions was indeed sought out by Gaunter to be his aide in this Quest, at the end when you wish something from him he will grant it without any catch or contract; it is a gift for his honesty which Gaunter must've appreciated. When I got Heart of Stone, I didn't immediately jump into the quests. I cleaned out all those new Question Marks that popped up on my map. After the local populace came back to a place that I rid of ghouls, a small circle of children started chanting this little diddy I haven't heard before, suprising to me since I played the game for about 80 hours already. I wrote it off as a neat little detail. When Gaunter approached Geralt on the Offieri ship, the dots connected immediately and I don't think I ever had such an intense case of dread-filled goosebumps~

In Poland, at least where I come from, people often say that the devil is a complete opposite of the God - for example, in many old stories, dark magic spells are based on reciting prayers backwards. What I'm telling is that Gaunter is devil indeed - he is the mirror reflection of God, the Liar, so as it's said in our Polish folklor.

    If you think about it, Gaunter O'Dimm is, in a sense, more important (Not to mention powerful and evil) than the Wild Hunt.
    - First introductions in White Orchard, the fact that when Geralt turns around when they finish talking, Gaunter has suddenly disappeared.
    - You will pass children on your way to missions / waypoints, and the children will often be singing his song.
    - He is watching you from afar in many cutscenes, perfectly blending with the background.
    - In Blood And Wine, a woman has a horrible curse bestowed upon her, by a "Beggar that sold mirrors". While you tell this to the Majordomo, O'Dimm's theme song is playing.
    In Thronebreakers, there is a forest with a house in the middle. If you lower the raining sound for that map, you can hear Gaunter's theme being whistled in the background by someone.
    On "Whatsoever a Man Soweth" (after the professor dies) if you extinguish all the candles around the pentagram, you can hear something breathing before it abruptly stops.
    - If you get the good ending, he will say something in 3 different languages, translated to:
    "You are insignificant. You think you've defeated me, but you are wrong. I cant be killed. I will be back."
    Gaunter was given more attention, and has always been more present than what meets the eye, and hopefully, he will come back in future games!

      Yep, that's precisely what made Sovereign so damn scary and the way it was revealed. You're set up to believe that Saren is the main villain and the biggest threat and then out comes the Sovereign-conversation from nowhere and you realize what you're actually up against. IF even a fraction of what it was saying was true how the hell would anyone stand a chance against something like that? Harbinger just... didn't live up to the air around Sovereign. It's hard to put a finger on what it was, it's just no contest between them.

    • @MrImastinker
      @MrImastinker 7 років тому +19

      Harbinger was more badass, but Sovereign was more frightening.
      With Sovereign the threat of the Reapers is very new and they have no idea what Shepard and friends are capable of. To Sovereign, he/she is just another organic ready to be squashed.
      Harbinger is fully aware of Shepard's threat and thus treats him/her as a more personal enemy. He is not as coldly attached as Sovereign was. Hence the overall lack of menace compared to Sovereign.

    • @speestechsupport1341

Amazing how you use Geralts strength and sword to defeat 99% of the enemies but with the greatest of them all the sword is useless, the spells and bombs have no effect, you must play by the rules and use the mind to defeat a "man" who controls time itself. Gaunter is exactly like the Satan in Master and Margarita- he is dark and terrible and will not hesitate to deliver judgement, even going so far as to encourage people to commit evil so he can punish it. However, he doesn’t go around committing evil for the sake of it or for his own benefit.
      I recommend reading Master and Margarita, one of the greatest philosophical books of the 20th century, and you will understand to a much greater extent what Gaunter represents.
      Whether you think Gaunter is good or evil probably depends on what you think represents justice. Olgierd (spelling?) is about as vile as a human can get, but at the same time he is full of regret... Does he deserve to lose his soul for his cruelty, or does his repentance excuse him from a lifetime of evil?
