Its great to see someone else who thinks Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game. I agree. Something that scared me from that game was the snakes in the hole in great bay. Those things would just come out of the hole when I want looking and jump scared me.

I wonder if a big reason we look back on Majora’s Mask so fondly is because it made us experience a wider range of emotions.
Don’t get me wrong, I greatly enjoyed playing Wind Waker, BOTW, and TOTK, but they never made me anxious to the extent that Majora, Twilight Princess, and even Skyward Sword did with its sacred realm sections.
I’ve enjoyed every Zelda game I’ve played, but only ones like Majora’s Mask have put me through the “entire” range of emotions.
Do you think it would be a good idea for Nintendo to release another “T for teen” Zelda game?

majora's mask is a really good game, and I used to think it was the best zelda game, but its just far too repetitive to deem it 'better' than like tears of the kingdom or even breath of the wild. Story wise, nothing will ever touch MM, but the game play side kindof stinks in my opinion.. the main quest atleast. Do some prerequisite quest to gain access an area, access the mini dungeon of the area, get an item that allows you to unlock a song that allows you to get the dungeon, rinse and repeat. It offers some deviation, but its a not very enjoyable gameplay loop, especially considering you have to do it 4 times, and the small amount of dungeons (only 2 of which are good in my opinion). The side quests were fun though, and the NPC's all had charm to them that kept me playing. I dont really deem it ahead of any of the modern zelda's imo. Maybe windwaker, and skyward sword, but ive never played TP so i cant really speak on that.

For me, back in the day it was 2 things.
Bowser's Laugh when entering the castle in SM64 (I was young and spent too long just enjoying the outdoor area) and the giant dragon head in Spyro 1.
They came out of no-where and little me just screamed and noped out.
I look back with a chuckle... but at the time, I just never wanted to deal with them.

Fun fact: the music in Ikana Valley is just alternating tritones (from what I can hear in the clip) one of the nicknames for a tritone is the devil’s interval.
Also fun fact, I paused the video and ran to my piano, then figured out the notes and said “oh no dip Sherlock it’s tritones” like yes that’s how nerdy I am

The surface-level of OoT is light enough, with a dark subtext that occasionally emerges into the clear main narrative.
Majora’s Mask has a surface level that’s dark, and of course you’ll find more darkness when you peel back the layers of subtext.

Yep Majoras Mask. You should make a whole ass video about it.
This game fascinated me beyond words when I was a kid. And it's hard to describe how the sound design was since then baked into my memory. God damn almost everything was creepy!!! The sound the clock made when a day passed freaked me out. It made you feel the dread of time running out and it sounded so final and mighty.
The mask merchant laughing creepy, and looking insane during dialog.
The agonizing screams of Link putting on or removing masks. The sound those masks made; like hardening and encrusting on his face, taking over.
The dancing girls in the back alley with the super weird music and the side quest that had you dancing along with it - the mask being some little head on top of Links head...
Malon being kidnapped by aliens and having a completely empty gaze the next day.
I could go on, this game was psychologically fucked to the core; and I love it.

    • @grieveromega6060
      @grieveromega6060 9 місяців тому

And on top: whatever you have achieved, whoever you have saved or helped like the loving couple, it is all gone once you the play the song. All you did for them was close to in vein. Nothing you did really made a staying difference. And since you now know how they suffer individually, you let them suffer again and again everytime you have to go back to day one.
Just by beating the game, you have achieved somethinh. But then you have to reset and even that feels like it was useless.
This all gives you the feeling of power- and useless despite being the hero of the story.

    • @dipbert

The soundtrack was insane. The Majora's Mask final boss music was awesome (especially Majora's Incarnation), and was honestly one of the best boss rooms in the whole series. The guy at Romani Ranch who was sad his cuccos weren't going to grow up before being crushed by the moon. The infamous Anju and Kafei quest. The monkey being tortured. The transformation masks all being created with the souls of the dead. All of it was so fucked up but I was so obsessed when I was little. I will never forget that Golden N64 Cartridge with the holographic sticker. That game is ingrained in my memory.

You are not alone on this. I was also creeped out a lot during this era. I think the soundfont for some reason has a lot to do with it, they had some really compressed sounds that made everything sound uncanny. And of course Koji Kondo was a master of weird ass dissonant harmonies and creepy ambience. The stretched out textures... Oof

If there’s one thing that can creep me out is how the Fairy Queen looks at Ribbon and you in the bad ending of Kirby 64. Brief, but this and the sound that plays gives that brief feeling you failed your goal of stopping Dark Matter for good.
And also, Ripple Star’s aesthetics in the second and third levels are so dark that you forget you are playing a Kirby game! That is what I love about Kirby 64 as a whole. 👀

Pretty sure that's what spawned my early on arachnophobia lmao. I played the game through and finally beat it years later in 2018 as an adult. After that playthrough I realized the music is the scariest part. "Last Day" is such an eerie song knowing everyone's about to die by the moon soon then you just look up and he's giving you the thousand yard stare

Last week I played Ocarina of Time on my N64 and it seems that I didn't clean the cartridge enough before playing because at a random moment I talked to a guard at Hyrule castle and the music started gliching (malon stopped singing in the background) while link was spinning on his torso doing a ton of fucking noise. I have never been so scared in my fucking life but it was funny afterwards.

Since we talking N64, I gotta say how unsettling Turok 2's Dead Marshes and Jet Force Gemini's Tawfret were. The soundtrack was tense, the background was dark and heck, even in the present days these maps make me go YIKES sometimes lol

Majora's Mask was creepy. If I can remember that place where you get the mirror shield, and the empty shell you leave when you played that song scares me. Also in Ocarina of Time, the bottom of the well freak me out as a kid. I remembered I couldn't continue playing because of how scared I was of that place.

Majora's Mask definitely had the scariest shit. The bosses were creepy as hell and I always hated the quest where you had to protect Romani Ranch from the aliens. Still the best game in the entire series, but messed with me during some of my childhood.

I’m a Kirby fan so is it safe to say that 02 back in Kirby 64 scared the shit out of me?
It’s not just the fact that we’re fighting a giant eyeball that BLEEDS (family fun for everyone). But it’s the music as well, I get that when HAL made this music it’s supposed to be a more final boss worthy song, but at the same time, it shows how much shit you are in now that the leader of the Dark Matter army has woken up.

I remember being really scared of Hitmonlee, Arbok, Muk, Lickitung in Pokemon Stadium when I was at least 6
I found Hitmonlee's general design really unsettling, especially when it stretched it's arms and legs. Vaguely reminded me of Redeads for some reason. Arbok scared me because I thought it 's fake face was the real one. I only saw the preview image when choosing rental Pokemon for a team so I didn't get a close enough look to see it's actual face until after I stopped being scared.
Muk and Lickitung scared me because both of their animations when they came out of Poke Balls made them get a bit too close to the screen for my liking in some way (Muk made me think of a spooky ghost going "BOO!", except it was jiggly and Lickitung stuck it's tongue out, i'm pretty sure the thing basically doubled in length)
There was also ReDeads (Specifically in Melee's adventure mode) that scared me so badly that when I actually got the chance to play Ocarina of Time some time later, I refused to leave the first area because I was scared they'd show up early in the game

The first game i ever got for my N64 was also DKRacing and it was my only game for like a year until I got Turok 2 for Christmas of 1998 and yes DKRacing was amazing! Being that it was my only game for a long time I managed to unlock and uncover every single hidden character and all secrets! But it wasn’t scary for me…..but the game that really scared me for like the first time ever was turok 2, it was on the first level where the first 2 Dino-humanoids come after you….those things really scared me so much that I ended up turning off the system and I placed the game back in its game box and I went back to bed….thinking that at anytime a Dino-humanoid would come onto my bed and kill me!!!!

There's always been something about the blocky, polygonal graphic style of this era that just kind of creeps me out, along with the sound design and the darker lighting a lot of games had. It feels off. Wrong.
Like, I find the eel from Mario 64 way more scary than the more realistic one in Odyssey.

abt how one could manage to make a pig scary: there's this one breed of pigs that look light pink and have very human-looking eyes and when they look at you it feels kinda creepy bc their eyes make them look so uncanny... as if there's a human in there. and i don't even have such anthropocentric views or anything, i don't eat flesh and think we humans are animals too, but still it just feels like, "those aren't pig eyes"... idk. lmao

Something about the textures in that era of graphics is both better at conveying what they're trying to be in the most simple of ways and are _absolutely_ nightmare inducing unintentionally. You got greenery hanging down? It looks WET EVERY TIME. Why is there sad, soggy, exposed seaweed in this jungle? The answer is just: "they're vines don't worry about it :)" but that doesn't make me not worry about it. Is that a cobble street? Why is it... Why is the street I'm walking on _out of focus?_ The answer is just: "don't worry about it, had to save space :)" and again I worry. Why does that vine texture repeat, but on a 45 angle instead of a 90 this time once it hits a very obvious corner? Again: "we tried our best in this artificial landscape :)" and that still does nothing to ease the discomfort of seeing it. I can't even fault you for being afraid of the poo, it doesn't even look like poo. It's poo-adjacent _at best._ That's significantly WORSE than actually looking like a crap pile, at least I KNOW FOR CERTAIN WHAT THAT IS. The poo just sort of... Oozed poo-like if you're generous in describing it. Why is it constantly flowing, I do not like that this was added more than the I dislike the insinuation of the contents of a septic tank coming to life and singing to me.

I’m always captivated by the thought that so many gen z kids were “traumatized” or “emotionally scarred” by stupid things. I’m a total middle of the road millennial, having been born in the late 80’s…and don’t get me wrong, I had my fair share of losing sleep over creepy instances as a kid, but it just seems different for Gen z. What made these kids so weak? Is it never having lived in a world pre-internet or pre-cell phone?…why are so many of them completely emotionally unstable?
