Honestly, my favorite part of The Evil Within is just its immaculate vibe. It swings wildly from a modern city to medieval farming communities to Victorian estates and back to the city. And on top of that, the whole thing manages to somehow feel cohesive. It gives the game a really surreal out-of-time feel. Kind of like Little Nightmares.
Same bro, when I played through it I was actually really sick and was having fever dreams so bad that I wouldn’t be able to tell what was real or not in the first few seconds I’d wake up and that kinda made the trippy visuals of TEW that much more cooler/scarier because I was kinda going through that irl lmao
I never understood what people's problems were with this game. The Evil Within was everything I wanted and expected from Shinji Mikami's return to the survival horror genre. It's a shame we may never get a third entry.
For me it is the obnoxious quick time events that altered camera and controls , while expecting the player to dodge instant kill obstacles. Followed by no save point and having to deal with a stalker enemy. The repeated deaths by the event just to reach a boss segment was frustrating to the point of dropping the game. That RE4 style mechanic was not fun especially on the harder difficulty. It is one thing to punish players for their lack of item management or constantly picking unnecessary fights, but the QTE just ruins the survival horror experience because there is no lesson to be learned from the deaths. Button mashing your way or getting cheap shot is not fun.
It released in 2014 and its voice acting was comparably as bad as a ps1 game. Its graphics looked late stage ps2/early stage ps3. Whoever decided to put the black bars covering half the screen for a “cinematic feel” needed to be fired. Lots of clunky animations and movement. Logic holes all over the place. Guy gets his leg nipped by a chainsaw, goes into an elevator, comes out no longer limping and his leg is fine. The 2nd game improved the gameplay, acting (still not great there but better nonetheless), graphics, told a more emotional and coherent story (but that was also a downfall as we were left with unanswered questions regarding the ending of the 1st), the only thing was it toned down the level of a horror a slight bit which is a sure fire way to get horror gamers in their feelings and hating your product. In the end, I liked both games, but the truth is the 2nd was doomed by a combination of people who had problems with the 1st one not wanting to give it another chance, lack of marketing, releasing it in competition with other highly anticipated games, and making it a bit less scary.

I always thought Sebastian’s demeanor made it feel like he was in a dream the whole time, which fit the theme. Like in dreams you aren’t as conscious as in the real world, you don’t typically acknowledge the crazy stuff happening in a dream, you sort of just accept it.
I miss Joseph Oda so much. He was even more of a lesser char that had absolutely no idea what was going on. I just wish there was a DLC of him like Kidman. She had TWO.

Just finished your Akumu videos while playing through the game myself. I'm surprised you have any love left for the game after that experience. This game, despite all of its uneven edges, has charm that's a rarity to find these days. I always found Seb to be a mix of the silent protagonist approach and his own character; allowing the player to experience the horrors of the game in their own way, while relegating characterization to the cutscenes and occasionally emulating what the player is thinking after beating a boss or a certain event occurs. It makes me happy that the DLC and the second game refined on the ideas of the main game to make them more structurally sound, there's real potential to be found in the concept despite the rushed nature. Here's hoping we get number 3.
One minor correction, Mikami created RE1, RE1R and RE4. He had little involvement with Resident Evil 2. But back on point, The Evil Within is amazing. I would argue that it’s more creative than any of the recent resident evil games, and it’s a 10-year-old game. I’ve played countless times and I never get bored with it.
I’m always surprised at how many people love the sequel over the first. To each their own of course. The first just has such a great atmosphere, memorable moments, creature design. I know some get confused by the story, but the horror of the unknown and the revelation that this entire game is someone’s twisted fantasy inside a collected consciousness machine makes it so enthralling. This video game is literally Ruviks game and he forces you to play like he wants you to.
I like Evil Within 1, but I think most people were turned off the pacing and esoteric plot and flat characters. The story in EW1 is actually pretty compelling, but only if you play the dlc which clears up a lot of the gaps in the main game. The dlc really should have been in the original game to begin with. EW2 is more broadly appealing and conventional so I'm not surprised more people like it.
I liked the second more than the first since the first gave me a headache, with the art style, the bright mirror light, and everything else, it gave me a headache. I still finished the game, and replay it often.... buuuuut the headache every time I play is annoying
forever one of my favourites, recently got my dad to try this out and he’s been enjoying it too. I think it was easily forgotten about because there was so many other popular games come out around this time. Great video, glad for you to showcase this hidden gem!
God I fell in love with the save room aspect. This game is amazing IMO. I love it so much I got the lighthouse rune symbol tattooed on the inside of my ankle, it was done using that sharp bone method where they hit it over & over, having to go over it multiple times. It's my only tattoo and I don't regret it. It's cool to see other people are sharing their appreciation for this game now too. I never understood why people were so critical of it originally
Evil Within is great. Not perfect, but above most for forsure. The team did an excellent job with diverse level designs and so many areas are works of art in themselves with excessive detail. My favorite part is still in the beginning chapters when you walk on the dock of a creepy dark lake, watching a slowly revolving lighthouse light from across the water, waiting for it to shine on you as a terrible sound and feeling takes control of you- yet nothing more significant happens. It just makes you wonder.
The evil within is one of those games that a UE6 remaster 10 years for now prob will sell well and everyone will say, "im a big fan of this cult classic horror game", but most journalists and players will be just culture vultures and as a bonus maybe also be toxic to "og" fans
Did we just become best friends? I'm working on a large scale defense of the Evil Within video project myself and it's just nice to see someone appreciating what's right in front of them instead of having the weird expectations everyone else did
Ruvik is one of the best villains of the genre. Deep, twisted, well designed… I loved every bit of the investigation, how you get to discover everything.
Absolutely my favorite horror series. I knew it was a winner when the first game had me hiding under a bed for a literal 20 minutes because the sound design had me shook. RE and SH absolutely have horror, but Evil Within was the first game that actually SCARED me. There's a difference. And the enemy designs are just horrific in a way that few games touch even though you could draw direct comparisons. And when you realize WHY the monster looks that way you feel like a genius.
Just finished watching it. Thank you for this!!! Absolutely loved that edit/montage at the end, too! Always nice seeing others appreciate and adore this game as much or even more so than I do! ❤
Have always adored this game since I played it, its gameplay was fun and rewarding and if you knew what you're doing easy to cheese AI and over save ammo. Its setting and atmosphere I thought were genius for a chapter based game, due to the setting of STEM it allowed the developers a way to change environments drastically. With distorted memories came distorted locations, which in turn allowed varied chapters. It was also unique to have the player character not be the protagonist, while we learn about Sebastian in logs, we learn more about Ruben through dialogue and visual storytelling. While the 2nd focuses more on Seb in that regard. We are Seb in a sense, no idea what the hell is going on. Fragmented story telling in a game can be a pain to do, but TEW does it great imo. Watched far too many playthroughs to come to the conclusion that I find most don't understand the what happened by the end, like Seb, but if you paid attention its easy enough to grasp. Only factor against this is Mobius I'd say since from memory they aren't name dropped or in any logs. 2nd game I don't like as much as the first, wish it was more gritty, and dark.... but also wish it went more with the town taken over setting. Chapter 3 and 7 I think were the best since it played to the strength of the game with its open areas. Found it overall easier than the first game, even on higher difficulties. I doubt we'll get a 3rd game, but would love if we got the best of 1 and 2 in 3.
I like Sebastian Castellanos because first of all he’s a detective you play as a detective police officer and he’s experiencing all of these super natural things which he keeps to himself and his outfit is amazing his hair style he’s very formal calm (In the first game) positive strong his backstory is interesting and yh
Akumu mode is great. Knowing that you are one hit from literally everything is so thrilling and beating the game is such a great feeling. The Bossfights are so hard especially couse resourcers are so rare and u cant get hit once. Took me 700+ deaths but I had a great time
I played this game just this year at May. It was a blast and it made me get into the survival horror genre. Rocks hard and I'll finish the 2nd game soon enough.
I love this game. Ruvik has to be my favorite horror game villain, and the monster design is incredible. I have the artbook which includes the stories behind some of the monsters. The difficulty never bothered me, because I’ve always been a stealth minded player. Patience and resourcefulness is key in this game. It made gameplay creative, fun, and really tense. I enjoyed not having the story spoon fed to me, and spending half the time confused. It made for an authentic experience. I’m really glad this game is getting the credit it deserves, and I’d really like to see a third game where they revisit old characters. The ending, especially in Ruvik’s case, was very open ended, and there’s a ton of story potential there.
The 2nd one is one of my favorites. The exploration, side quest, the map size are all perfect. It's got a scary atmosphere and momster designs. 1st was fun but the 2nd expanded on it and fleshed it out. Perfect sequel it built on to what worked on the first and asded to it
So happy to see this game has had a recent resurgence and sort of a second chance. I stumbled upon it not long after it's release, and I was absolutely in love. Every point you touched on was perfect lol, I have not found another horror game that offers the same experience. The sequel was also really good, but in my opinion it wasn't nearly as immersive and bizarre.
A comforting game for me. For some reason, that one water enemy's design stuck with me really hard and wormed its way into a lot of my art over the years. The areas and creatures in this game are impeccable 👌
1:21 A few days ago Tango was revived by Krafton. It's unclear whether or not they'll be able to or want to make another Evil Within, because Hi-Fi Rush was the focus of the deal, and also because Shinji Mikami is gone, but it's not entirely dead. EDIT: 2:27, should've been patient.
IP most likely still belongs to Bethesda. They COULD let somebody make the game and publish it but since Tango aren't independent and Mikami probably won't collaborate with any of them, I assume Evil Within is gonna be dead for a long time.
@@Batmanfan4life Hell, with what Bethesda has been releasing, even with Mikami it would suck. However, if Tango gameworks makes another (Unlikely I know, but still) it might be good, even without Mikami, if the old team was still there and/or they just got some skilled people who knew how to make a good horror game
I didn't play the game at its release, and hearing that people complained about Sebastian being "bland" and the story being confusing is well, confusing to me. I loved that the game did that. The story develops as you play along but you need to actually be cognisant and pay attention to it. I liked how Sebastian is just as clueless as us, but we learn and understand more as the game progresses. It really lets you immerse yourself and Sebastian is in a sense you. It's your way into the world. Just how games as Half-Life made their character "bland" so it could represent you and get you really immersed into the world. The character is meant to be an extension of you. The complaints about the game makes no sense to me since for me, it is what makes this game so great. I didn't think I would like it as much as I do. I got really invested in it and this game is peak, I love it. Shame Microsoft shut down the studio, killing all hope for a third game.
Im glad someone makes videos about this game/franchise. Its one of my favourite games ever made, and i will never stop wanting a third entry. I love pretty much everything about this game, funny enough pretty much every complained you mentioned people had, is a reason on why i love the game. Everything from the story to the characters, athmosphere and world was immaculate to me. I still remember having hour long discussions about what the story truly was, and how much each char knew, and what happened to them etc. And the gameplay was junk, but in a perfect way, it added to the horror, if i died it felt like the game was bs until i realized the mistake i made and simply played better. The game was hard, but not unfair, the story and characters were a confusing mess, but truly great if you actually took the time to analyze it. I also liked the second game, i enjoyed the story and gameplay, it just lacked many things the first one did so great, it was no longer a confusing nightmare that neither you nor Sebastion could wake up from, it was just a normal day with some spooks. In TEW1 Sebastian and the player had no control and were strung along the ride, in TEW2 you always have control and it no longer feels like a true horror experience.
Evil Within is easily one of my favorite survival horror games. Definitely an underrated game, we need more entries in the series for sure. There's almost endless possibilities you can do with it.
This is such an under rated gem of a game. I was crushed when I heard Tango was closed by Microsoft. It really deserved a follow up 3rd installment explaining where Joseph is and what he's been up to and to address the rebooting of stem at the end of game 2.
I love the Re-Made Video you did for The Evil Within, I absolutely love the first game when my friend showed it to me years ago. It's not for everyone that has thier opinion on it but this game just gives me RE4 Vibes and how nightmarishly the world the player are pulled into. You are awesome ❤️
Absolutely right. Unpredictable. That's what I love. Being in one place and the next moment in another. And the monsters were crazy scary. Haunting indeed.
Nightmare mode and akumu are hell i played both, and it is also my favorite game it is a misunderstood masterpiece. The reason you're my favorite person to play it is because the way you edit it, it is so funny
I adored this game! I remember looking up all the content for it before it came out and played it day one. I love its atmosphere and story and characters. The save points having clair de lune playing, just the whole feeling of it in the cracked mirror, man its so magical to me. I totally agree with all you said, though Joseph was a soft spot for me. I was so excited about the possibility of his return when collecting all the slide show in EW2 teased it, but was disappointed that not even a DLC was announced for the game or sequel. The crossbow as a versatile weapon was such a good choice too, it was such an awesome feeling to land a real good harpoon shot. A great video and loved the segment at the end as well!
This game is a hidden gem i swear, also i love the first game more than the second, i know it’s controversial but the first one was genuinely terrifying for me. I think it’s mostly because it’s so unpredictable and odd, but also the story was interesting along with the “villain” WE NEED A THIRD GAME!
I preordered this game for my 360 back then. This game did not disappoint. I loved this game sooo much. Dang that red-ring-of-death that turned my 360 into a paper-weight 😭😭😭😭😭
I love this game still, thanks for making this video, it really summarizes it well and agree with your thoughts on this. Also we can't forget about this gem ^^.
Hell yes!! I’ve always loved this game even with its noticeable flaws. It’s a fantastic ode to the horror genre and has such a wonderfully realized universe. Love the second one too and would love to see your thoughts on it!
The Evil Within was one of the best horror games I’ve ever played and definitely deserves a spot in my collection. At first it was a little hard but once I got the hang on it and progressed the Storyline, i fell in love.
I loved this game! It oozes atmosphere, I loved the difficulty and scarcity of ammo, I love games when you barely survive the fights, it makes them really memorable. I loved the weird transitions, I could never guess what is going to happen next.
Your first video on the evil within reconcile me with the horror genre and motivate me play this game. Now this game and the seconde episode are probably my favorite video game universe thx to u. I'm really sad microsoft fvcked up tango.
Honestly, I never liked the 1st The Evil Within. Way too clunky for me, but I absolutely love TEW2. I felt it way more compelling with semi open world, exploration and more refined controls. Combat feels awesome.
Indeed. Plus in the first game, none of the characters have any fear at all considering what's going on around them. In the 2nd one they have human emotions.
@@tankourito5419 Ngl it felt like they were just writing TEW1's story as they went. Each event was preceded by something even more cryptic and ridiculous, which works to a degree since the setting of the games are pure insanity.
Finishing The Evil Within 2 first actually gave me the balls to push through and finally finish The Evil Within. Was too afraid and easily frustrated when I started playing the first one. The second has better feeling and playing gameplay overall, but I gotta admit... something about the grime and grit of the original... just works ten times better for me in terms of atmosphere. It's one of many reasons I absolutely want a third game. Hoping to see the best parts of both games finally realized into one.

The Evil Within 1 was a game I loved when I found out about it and played it. When I went online to see if anyone else liked it, all I got was people hating it. I was saddened that people were severely harsh with it, but I am glad people are starting to love the game.
I purchased this game on my birthday when it first came out. I have always loved horror games. And I heard it was made by the game guy that helped make RE4. I loved this game.
Took me 700+ deaths but I had a great time
The Evil Within and Alien Isolation were my GOTY games back in 2014. Masterpieces!
I played this game just this year at May. It was a blast and it made me get into the survival horror genre.
Rocks hard and I'll finish the 2nd game soon enough.
Tango was actually bought by Krafton recently so thankfully the studio isn’t dead after all. The Evil Within might still have a future
The Evil Within is one of my top 5 favourite games of all time. It’s so good I actually come back to play it again and again.
Very very cool musical outro. Love the cinematography!
@@persona3rulezyeah and even if Bethesda wanted to do an evil within 3 it wouldn't be as good because mikami wouldn't be involved
How people say that The Evil Within is a bad game? This game is a masterpiece!
Are we gonna ignore that insane Transition at 0:34
The entire music video at the end was absolutely amazing.. seriously all of that editing had to take.hours. thank you for this 💜💙❤️
This is such an under rated gem of a game.
They need to bring this franchise back!!! I loved it
Absolutely right.
I think it’s mostly because it’s so unpredictable and odd, but also the story was interesting along with the “villain”
WE NEED A THIRD GAME!
Both Evil Withins' are good games to play back on PS5 💯
The game has such a banger song. I could tell you enjoyed making that montage at the end.
I really respect your explanation of the "safe rooms". Thanks
That was the best Long Way Down AMV I have EVER seen
1st game was a tripy answer to the new guard of deadspace in survival horror. 2nd game was a true open world horror masterclass.
Bro went crazy with the outro editing!! Very well done what a love note to a great game.
While I love the first one, I find it hard to replay because the game is basically a stealth game for the first 2 hours or so.
Gone but not forgotten rest in peace TEW you’ll always have a place in my heart one of the greatest games I ever played
Thank you so much for this video, i love the first game sooooo much❤ i think it is way too underrated, it's really just so sad why it gets so much hate😢
Yea its like some people are blind.
I so agree. I’m relatively new to the horror genre and The Evil Within was such a good introduction to the genre. Such a good game.
I never liked the sequel but man the first is indeed a masterpiece, I love that game
"I told you I wasn't going to leave this place. It's fucking EVIL out there."
"That may be... but there's EVIL WITHIN, TOO"
👁👄👁 👁👄👁
when I found that Easter egg... I just fackin' laughed so hard... it fit so well and also was so out of place. Truly something that could only work in the evil within
I love that you have the dying light start menu music playing in the background around 15 minutes
Good news actually tango game works is back baby with a vengeance and we are getting hi fi rush which is really awesome
Maybe we get a third game afterall though we all know how these things go it takes alway a MASSIVE amount of time before the gears are set in motion
@@ZgermanGuy. that’s true and you’re right about that
@@ZgermanGuy. I'm sure the IP belong to Bethesda. It would be only natural, they're the publisher and Tango were acquired by ZeniMax even before The Evil Within development started.
More video game essays need to end with an edit of the game . Loved the PEAK part great work.
I play this game at least once every year, it's one of my favorite games ever
Also my number one.....played it probably 5 years back. Playing R.E.4 for the first time on ps5. Fantastic game but as for the scare factor.....Evil within beats R.E.4 by far. Especially with a good headset.
LOVE this game!! Always have! Thank you for making this video on it!
Hell yeah, always happy to see love for this game, also i love the way you edit, subbed
The Evil Within 1 was a game I loved when I found out about it and played it. When I went online to see if anyone else liked it, all I got was people hating it. I was saddened that people were severely harsh with it, but I am glad people are starting to love the game.
Proxi nice vid. You can really see the progress on your editing skills
i remember being so excited for this game back then, absolutely loved it
Loved the montage with the music :D
I purchased this game on my birthday when it first came out. I have always loved horror games. And I heard it was made by the game guy that helped make RE4. I loved this game. It’s one of my favorites as well. Laura is such a memorable boss. Such a great visually horrific game in the best way. I can’t wait until you release the DLC video. Earned a subscribe for me. Thank you for the content.
10 ears later and the idea of fire being the main weakness for the enemies in this game cuz of ruviks trauma is such a brilliant detail, i love this game sm, this is objectively better than the sequel
1:19 so glad the studio got picked up again just sucks that they only got hi-fi rush back and can't make a sequel to evil within
BRO. YES. all I want is a remaster of this game and a third one. 😅
thank you so much for this! The Evil Within was and still is my favoritte horror game! It really is a comfort game. So sad we'll never see a third game..
I am playing it right now and it is fantastic! A little slow at the very beginning, but it gets so much better
Big Evil Within fan here! Anyone who sleeps on this series is missing out big time!
I was still in High school when this game dropped and I did a few art projects based on it. It truly was underrated. Some of the best creature designs I’ve ever seen.
i love this type of game reviews, hope you do a review for the second game
Great video! Despite its flaws I still believe that evil within is one of the greatest horror games (at least from the ones I played).
TEW 1 is a masterpiece it reminded me of the og re4
@@gabrielbraz6119 Same creator, Shinji Mikami
I concur good sir! Underrated gem of a series!
Just buyed evil within 1 and gotta say it's scary the combat is so good and you can fight back on your own and explore I recommend buying it.
Been actually thinking about replaying both, i really liked them on release
Great video my guy. that cool edit made me sub and it's nice to see people who holds the first game in high regards. Imo i think The Evil Within 2 is a huge step down compared to the first game in terms of horror and atmosphere.
