plasmanarwhal agreed. Thankfully, there’s a Majoras mask 3D fan patch that removed eyes, added back good deku hopping and Zoe’s swimming, and added quality of life changes such as putting the masks on the Dpad. If you have a hacked 3DS like I do, I recommend it
Atomic Collision Nintendo can’t really do shit to emulators themselves, as they don’t technically do anything illegal on their own You can find most emulators just by looking them up. Citra’s apparently the best 3DS emulator from what I’ve heard. The real issue is finding ROMs since a lot of ROM sites are being taken down. r/Roms on reddit is a pretty easy place to find ROMs, though-there’s usually a repository somewhere near the top of the page. If you want to be legal about it, though, you could always just dump the ROMs onto your computer from the cartridge. For other consoles: Dolphin is the best GameCube emulator by far, being able to run Wind Waker without issue even on my shitty computer, and No$GBA is my go-to for GBA emulation on PC. (It also supports DS emulation in a limited form, though it doesn’t seem to be able to do save states for DS and I can’t get in-game saves to work for the life of me.) Options for Android are fairly limited by the relatively low processing power of phones, but DraStic is a great DS emulator (albeit one you have to pay for) and John GBA is a good GBA emulator.
I reallye like the remake and the original, but....i like more the original, the only reason u like the 3d it's because i can play it anywhere i go, ....maybe i Will Buy the original in the virtual consolé of the wiiu
Spyro 2 and 3 also had really fun swimming, i'm amazed more games didn't do this. I heard so much hype for Fontaine's swimming in genshin, but it's still kinda slow.
There's something really really sad about how the original text when you get the Ice Arrows goes "Try them everywhere!" and in the 3DS remake you can only try them when the game wants you to, that's just really depressing
@@TurlessTiger The entire point of ice arrows is that you figure out for yourself that you can freeze water and then you realize you can use the platforms to jump around to reach places. It's teaching you the thought process. When there are sparkling lights telling you where to shoot it completely ruins it. =(
@@chuifongtam4703 well it wouldn’t be an issue if you could freeze the water everywhere, not just where the game wants you to. But that’s not the case, so you just end up shooting arrows until you actually hit one of the spots that you can freeze. Out of all the changes people complain about, this is the one that i understand the least. Either let me freeze every spot of water or show me which ones i can.
Having the transformation masks on the 3 unused d-pad directions is such an obvious, intuitive, and simple improvement that Nintendo could never even consider it.
An alternative solution: Just make them extra item buttons. Rather than keeping them static so in most dungeons 1 or 2 of the buttons on the D-Pad are useless, let me customize them and just have more items available in general.
@@anomalocaris2593keyword sometimes, I've played through Majora's mask on the 64 at least 20 times and never had a single problem with the ice arrows. If you have an issue that only comes up 10% of the time it's not something you have to change
It's interesting how much of a divide there is between the two remakes. Ocarina 3D is widely considered an improvement over the original while this one...
It's because they were bold enough to make interesting changes and people are entitled and too stubborn to appreciate new things. I think this version is far superior overall. A few very minor dumb changes, like stopping platforms from moving and nerfing Zora Link, aren't near enough to make me consider otherwise. Especially when the brilliant new Twinmold fight is arguably my favorite fight in the entire series. That said, Nintendo should have put a classic mode in so "purists" can play their inferior version.
@@IonSquared You are entitled to have your wrong opinion :) No but for real, most of what is said in this video I agree with, and for me the biggest issue is how it seems like the game lost its soul, its all bright and clean when the original game had a very heavy dark atmosphere that really sold the feeling of despair from the world being on the verge of destruction. But for some people the changes are good, I personally would play the original one over this anyway so it doesnt really affect me too much.
@@HelmuthGerka I feel like the majority of changes he mentions here are minor nitpicks, while the positive changes, many like free camera control or Link's slightly faster running speed that he completely fails to mention, are very substantial. This video feels purposefully misleading in that sense to me. There are certainly points I agree on though, like Zora swimming (which is probably the biggest deal of all the complaints) and the ice arrow thing. But yeah, the graphics being a bit too bright I also understand. It just doesn't bug me because I feel like the world is so immersive now and I don't think it lessons the atmosphere; but I get it. Either way, we both can appreciate this fantastic game.
@@IonSquared For a lot of us, the art style difference is pretty huge. Like, you could impose a cell shaded chibi art style on shadow of the colossus, but even with the same exact mechanics, it’d be quite “off” (or just funny).
It seems like there are some higher-ups at Nintendo who absolutely lose their minds any time a playtester becomes confused or overwhelmed for any amount of time. With the slightest provocation they'll add in obtrusive hints, slow the game down, and remove options so that a player can't possibly do the wrong thing.
@andreslancheros2863 this is incorrect. Games like elden ring or sekiro are difficult and still have plenty of younger fans. Zelda games are generally pitched at the tween to early teen demographic, which in my experience will still go for decently challenging games.
For 2 years, this video has been repeatedly showing up in my recommend feed. Finally today I saw it again and i was like “Fine! Same, but Opposite...Zora link I thought was. really good at swimming...even though it Took up magic, it was like Goron links roll. never knew till now but I still like the swimming in the 3ds
That's not really practical with an N64-controller. The way most kids (including me) held the controller in their small hands was right hand on right handle, left hand on center handle. Reaching the D-Pad from there is really awkward. But obviously, it's a good solution for emulation where you can use any modern controller where the D-Pad is closer to the analogue stick!
"Because when a creator doesn't understand the appeal of their work, they're likely to make changes that undermine it." The number of times this has happened in the last 20 years alone is incredible... UA-cam creators, mainstream media, television shows and movies, computer games (I'm looking at you, EA)... This seems to be the biggest problem when sequels get made in any franchise or license.

I agree that for a rushed game, Majora's Mask is awesome, but I would argue that Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was also rushed (having been developed in the same time frame as Majora's Mask) and it is also, in my opinion, awesome. In both cases, they are my favorite of their respective series' 3D graphic entries.

@@awryri Super Smash Bros. Melee had a considerably short development cycle and thanks to many oversights made by the developers it became the flawless masterpiece still played competitively today.
There's a patch for the 3DS version of the game that fixes basically everything wrong with it, and it's genuinely my favorite way to play Majora's Mask now. Love this game.
@@celeste2762 The most dramatic changes are as follows: - All of the transformations now function identically to their N64 counterparts (meaning Deku Scrub has its momentum when bouncing on water, and Zora swimming is no longer sluggish), with the exception of the Giant's Mask which was changed too drastically to simply patch. - Giant Link and his attacks are faster so that it's less of a pain to use the 3DS version of the mask. - Bosses no longer have eyes to signify weak points and function exactly like their N64 versions. - Ice arrow functionality has returned to their N64 versions, meaning you can now freeze any body of water and not just the shining spots. On top of a whole lot of miscellaneous QOL changes, this is definitely the best way to play MM3D if not MM as a whole.
the thumbnail (for those who dont know) is the disgusting cgi alien chick from Return of the Jedi that they added in the special edition which is super imposed on the moon from majoras mask. I think it gets his point across well xD
I remember my general reaction to the remake being something akin to "man, this just doesn't feel as good." I was a little afraid I was just blinded by my love for the N64 original, but it's nice to see someone put it into words. I was never able to explain exactly what the changes did to it that made me like it less, because I was usually talking to people who bounced off the original anyway. It's just kinda nice to know I'm not insane. The swimming was also a huge disappointment, good god. Even as an adult, I'd happily just swim around for a while.
The first time I saw the remake was on my friends 3DS because he was struggling with the water temple, in which I told him it was easy once you got the swim controls down (not realizing they changed). He asked if I could do the hard part (in the video) for him. I played for 5 seconds and though the swimming was broken, I was like "Why is he swimming like that? It's weird. I think your game broke."
The ice arrow change pissed me off the most. I distinctly remember being able to freeze any water surface in the original, so i was really confused when the game wouldnt let me freeze water unless it was sparkling
I honestly loved that idea cause it makes things so much easier. That's why they changed that to make it easier for people who have a hard time like me. I prefer using ice arrows in the sparkling spot so I know where to use it. Genius change. I'm very impressed.
@@HeroShades ...but if you can only freeze sparkling parts it dumbs it down to an extreme, it's good you can properly play the game but that restriction is not a good change especially since ice arrows in the original aren't that hard to use considering the ice blocks are so big and it really removes the point of having them as the dungeon item because before it use to be a puzzle and you would have to find the best way to use them but now that they literally tell you where to use them and only there it might as well just be an ice path that was already there to begin with
It is literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. Imagine eyes on every dark souls boss. Just ruins the experience when you know how to defeat a boss immediately.
I actually like the thematic implication it has, with eyeballs traditionally being tied to one's ability to perceive magic and the spiritual world (The 'third eye' so to speak) and ties into the mask in it's colours well. What i dislike is the removal of all of the other things. Not the addition of the eyes.
@@bartandaelus359 lorewise it kinda makes sense as evil tends to have eyes in zelda since ancient times... also sometyhing somethimg malice eyes... the problem is how easy it makes it
Because it's an easy way to display weak points. Eyes have always been considered weak and they naturally look like targets so players ar inclined to shoot or hit them
It's clickbait in the best way possible. It's so weird that you HAVE to click on it to figure out why it looks like that, but it uses the iconic imagery of the moon from MM and the weird CGI additions from Star Wars to convey exactly what the video is about. It's probably my favorite thumbnail on the entire site. I unironically see it as a work of art, it's just so creative!
Same. It would have been better as an HD remaster on the Wii U. Wind Waker 3D would have been perfect for the 3DS since they could use the models from the DS games and update the lighting, to make Wind Waker 3DS.
@@traviscunningham7062 Agreed, they also had a version you could get on the Wii U (using the classic Wii app) which is the version I have and the reason I'll never get rid of my Wii U, though its not remastered.
I agree on OoT except in regards to the final Ganon fight. I feel that fact that you couldn't fully see him made the fight so much more tense. It was like he was a shapeless shadow monster, only illuminated by the occasional lightning flash as well as two glowing eyes.
15:13 It never even crossed my mind that I could still use the ice arrows there because the game made it clear to me that I could ONLY use them on sparkling water.
The funny thing is that remembering the original version wouldn't help there either, since, in the original version of Majora's Mask, the ice arrows don't work there. I tried it; they don't freeze the water in Gyorg's boss room.
If you reuse the engine and assets the largest part of development is already done, you only need to create content. Of course there were some mechanical additions such as the time mechanic and the masks.
Running out of Magic in the Pirate’s Fortress sucks. I also hate that they moved Shiro there. The Stone Mask is most useful in the Fortress, yes, but I liked that you had to go out of your way to get it first, you had to work for it, know ahead of time. Now it’s basically just handed to you. Unless, of course, you ran out of Magic, and now it’s nigh impossible to get the mask without leaving the Fortress to get more Magic!
Shiro's original spot at the Road to Ikana rewarded exploration without rushing the intended order of the game. Really, anyone playing organically had a decent chance of exploring each cardinal direction and taking note of the barrier. The initial barrier to the coast and ikana is epona - ikana further being gated by hookshot, then ice arrows. Placing shiro with the pirates is a way of trying to spoonfeed it to you. MM is also exceptionally replayable for a zelda game in my opinion, on both a small and large scale - or rather, I should say the game experience can be different depending on how you play. Heck, a player who has less than 4 bottles and is unable to finish the pirate's fortress in one go may decide to spend time exploring once finding the hookshot. In the case you didn't see shiro in ikana initially, but you did see that you needed the hookshot to progress, you get another opportunity to organically visit and potential spot shiro - rewarding you with the stone mask for your return visit. Kinda lost focus on the point as I rambled on, but I think it's just such a shame for shiro to be there. Not even considering the *why* of shiro being in the fortress. A place that is prohibitively difficult to get into, and two steps removed from clock town where all of the guards are, compared to being reasonably far at the road to ikana
Them moving him there is fine. How would you know ahead of time? That could just be needlessly annoying. It isn't handed to you, you still have to look around. No it isn't impossible at all.
@@Xarenth But it could still be missed and it would be annoying and tedious to go back. But it is still natural and organic exploration. What if they already got the hookshot though? You are only talking about the more positive situation where they would already need to go back anyways. It really isn't a shame for Shiro to be there. He infiltrated it in a attempt to stand out. Yet he is invisibly so he could clearly get in.
@@Jdudec367No it could not be missed. When you get near him, Tatl alerts you that something is nearby. The game basically holds your hand, telling you he’s there. If that’s not enough, a gossip stone outside the fortress straight up tells you, you need the Lens of Truth to see him. (The original kept things more obscure simply saying you need eyes that can see the truth to find him. Any player with a brain could connect the dots from there)

The Zora swimming was the thing that disappointed me most. When I was a kid on Saturday mornings, sometimes I'd pop in Majora's Mask just to swim. I'd go to the place with the beavers and just swim back and forth along their course without doing the race. I'd relax and think about other things while I was doing it or make up stories about Link. It was so much fun. I was excited years later to get to swim around in the remake, but it ended up not being nearly as enjoyable.
MM3D was my first time playing Majora's Mask and I genuinely wondered how people thought the deku jumping was so good. I genuinely thought I was doing something wrong, and I'm just now learning that they broke it on purpose.
there nothing wrong with the deck jumping its fine I really do understand this complaint I've tested both versions side by side still could figure it out lol
@@Aelvir114Even if that was true (which I doubt), that's not the issue. Nerrel literally explains this in the video. They changed Link's movement to make his acceleration slower, meaning that the movement across the water is slower due to Deku Link's hampered movement speed, and the size and placement of the lily pads are not designed for this new movement. This also results in areas where you are unable to reach certain pads without awkward movement to build up speed. Furthermore, Nintendo should know, more than anyone, that when designing a game, fun is king. It doesn't matter if the spinning boost was an unintentional glitch, people enjoy doing it and it works. It's not a game breaking bug, it's a movement strategy that rewards players by experimenting with the game's mechanics. To take that away (and to make it worse by deleting the player's momentum) is not only punishing player's experimentation, but also taking away a fun mechanic that did nothing to ruin the immersion or level design. The right move here, if it really was such an issue, would be to slow down the movement boost from spinning slightly, not just stopping Link in his tracks. Let Link keep the momentum at least.
I still love the 3DS game, but I completely agree with everything, the version I played first was the N64, I’ve never beaten it, but I wish the 3DS game didn’t nerf it all.
Honestly, I'm sure that many things with the original version were better, but as someone kindof new to the franchise that is Zelda, I'm somewhat thankful when things were "dumbed down". I have autism, so some puzzles are really hard for me to figure out. Sometimes I don't know what is a door an what isn't, lol. But when I played the remake few years ago I thought it was nostalgia... or that I was playing like shit when I was a kid... or that I had became so much better.... and actually they just changed a lot of stuff ahah
With Breath of the Wild making a resurgence in Zelda games, I'd say they could potentially do these remakes better on the Switch. We already got a solid remake of Link's Awakening, so it's possible.
Platform certainly wasn't holding them back, lack of desire to remake Majora's Mask was. Unfortunately for those that love the original, the majority of people get too frustrated by its' mechanics to stick with it and play the game the way it was intended to be played. I'd bet all the money I have on them never remaking Majora's Mask again, sadly.
Link's Awakening suffers from a lot of stutters through the game and they never bothered to update it. The game literally only received one patch since launch. I REALLY hope they don't fuck up OoT and MM remakes.
They should actually remake this on the switch and optimise controls for the switch, or even just a new game like this with young link and amazing graphics and maybe adding a jump button for it
I played this for the first time with the "Project Restoration" mod and it is definitely worth it. It gets rid of almost every issue shown in this video.

Another problem that I have that you didn't mention is the 3rd day. Yes the other days look perfect and better in my opinion in the 3D version, however the night of the 3rd day takes away from the atmosphere. The fiery sky is great but the fact that the sun never comes back up takes away from the atmosphere. In the original nature still took its natural course even though the world of Termina was fixing to be destroyed. The sun still came up as if another day was fixing to shine. On the 3D version it remains night even at 5 AM making the world feel less real and immersive.
@@DerpyRhythem I mean with the added context of the game being all in links head, when the moon crashes the world literally ends, so it’d make sense the sun never comes back up. And overall, I loved playing and beating Majora's Mask 3D...but I do see why fans of the N64 version are disappointed in the 3DS remake
Yeah. Cause the fact is, it's a remake. No matter how many dumb changes they make to it, it's still the same game at it's core. It's only he people who played the original that can point out this minor flaws that hamper the experience.
@@lukebytes5366 they're not minor. The Deku hopping is a flaw in general, not just from the standpoint of comparing the original to the remake. The zora swimming is extremely boring compared to the original, which, in a video game, is a pretty big flaw. The boss fights were much more interesting and varied in the original, which, again, is more fun. That's not a minor flaw. I played through the remake once and I would never again play through it unless I was using the restoration mod. Besides that, I just play the original. Which is a shame, because I love the visuals, aside from the over-brightening. So the fact that fans of the original still play the original or the restoration mod, kinda shows that these flaws aren't minor.
I wish Nintendo comes out with a similar bundle like Bioshock and Kingdom Hearts where you can play all of their 3D zelda games on one console. With the option to play the remake or the originals.
That can happen with N64 Online. It might not happen but there is a chance it could happen. Maybe on September. If it does happen they will definitely put Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask in, maybe even both.

Interestingly enough, my two favorite memories of my original playthrough are accidentally discovering you could spin hop as the deku and when I first saw how fucking cool it looked when you swam in zora form. I literally spent hours doing both of these things as a kid, and when I found out they ruined not one, but both of them in the remake, I was just like... why...
I have the best memories of Zora swimming for the first time too and it is a baffling change (even if I find the remake vastly superior overall and this video to be the equivalent of 25 minutes of nitpicking).
@Grape Heart exactly who thought making twinmold phase 2 take 10 hits to stun and reveal weak points and if he burrows once during that the counter resets. Being a giant is supposed to make you feel powerful not handycapped.
honestly, even if the swimming was intact, it wouldn't be as cool as on an actual console and TV. It's the kind of movement and camera angle that is doomed just by viewing it on a handheld, all hunched over.
I loved to dolphin swim at a corner in a certain way and it would make me fly straight up into the air and land really hard and lose several hearts. It was good fun.
Exactly! The moon's face in N64 always emotionally confused me because it's expression was so ambiguous considering the danger that it was. When I saw the moon's tear fall, it made me think that the moon was in fact crying because it didn't want to fall, - hence it's conflicted expression. But in the 3DS remake, forget that. It's just a predictable and uninspired angry face.
Lol, no. It wasn't expressionless, the eyes are way too wide, and the teeth were visible. It was clearly an "angry face", the only thing the remake did, was make you question whether the Moon itself was sentient or not, as imo the N64 version feels like just a rock with a carved face to look scary, not actually be scary. Imo the remake is more unsettling, in a good way ofc. The N64 just looked like a rock shaded wallpaper when it was near the end of Day 3, where as in the remake it feels like the Moon is actually breathing on your neck.
@@rainofkhandaq6678 the remakes moon is easily one of the worst things about that game, it just looks comical and kills any tension that it would have whatsoever as, again, it looks comical
The good parts of MM are more to the credit of Koizumi rather than Aonuma, in my honest opinion. Just look at interviews and Koizumi's other work. I don't think Aonuma was very attached to MM because it's not a very Aonuma-like game, compared to the TWW which he probably sees as his own magnum opus.
I always thought the bosses were held so open and general in the original, because you'd be able to refight them to do side quests you missed, and going in with new tools felt great. Now it's all "use the one weapon" like every other Zelda game...
it's a late comment but after YEARS of seeing this thumbnail, and me wondering....I finally sat down and decided to watch this video. And....it's well explained in every sense of the word. Everything the remake is guilty of, you explain, contrast to why it doesn't hold up as well as the original. I played the 3DS version and did enjoy it, but maybe that was more because as a kid, I gave up on the original N64 version. It was too different and foreign to me. So maybe if I went in with the N64 version committed to memory, I would've had a lot more disappointment and confusion to it. I still love the game as I got to experience its story, its characters, and its world. If I played the original, where more of its ideas were fully realized.....well, I'm rambling. Excellent video m8.
I modded my 3DS and installed the Project Restoration Patch and it's a Blessing from the Community! Almost all Issues got fixed, at least the really big ones like Zora Swimming, Mask swapping, Slowing Time to 1/3 and Deku Hop!
I love how Majora's Mask is considered a masterpiece by anyone ever, ( which it is, the game is a legendary for being so different and meaningful) and then creator Eiji Aonuma goes and says "at the time, I think there was something wrong with me..." I'm still so thankful that it even happened. The new BOTW sequel is said to be getting the "Majora's Mask" treatment even though it has nothing to do with Majora's Mask, I do hope the BOTW sequel has that same meaningful real effect as Majora's Mask did.
Something about Odolwa you didn’t mention is how much his new animations lessened his threat level. In the original, he was like a determined and quick-witted swordsman. In the 3DS version, right from the getgo in his introduction, he looks more clumsy and tired and now has moves that further cement this new look of him.
@@PanickyRedundant Agree+changing the fight from the original robbed from me what was a cool moment in having an epic swordfight/duel with the boss. When I originally played MM as a kid, I don't think I felt the need or understood how the deku flowers could be used. I just had an absolute blast of a slash off.
N64 Odolwa is one of my favorite Zelda boss fights because you could choose between having an epic clash of steel with a powerful warrior or make it easier with items if you were having a hard time. Then they decided to railroad you into a very specific, mandatory way to do it that isn't nearly as fun. It's like giving someone who likes to cook and try different dishes very specific ingredients with a recipe they have to follow to the letter. It just baffles me how Aonuma thought this was a good idea.
Yeah that's a weird change. I liked how it was a wild and chaotic fight, there wasn't one winning move but both you and he throwing everything at the wall until one of you died. I remember hiding in the deku flower to get my bearings the first time I was playing, it felt like hiding in the bathroom after having a fight at a party, knowing it wasn't over and I'd just have to adapt

As a massive fan of the original, I bought a 3DS (the MM edition of course :D ) just for this remake. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end BUT I do agree with pretty much everything you pointed out. The Zora swimming and Ice arrows changes are the most baffling to me. The Deku spin sprint change isn't that bad as you get used to the new acceleration, but it's just less fun and satisfying to use compared to the original as you said. Also, hearing that Bomber Book notification sound from the original made me realize how much I miss it. Didn't even realize it was gone in the remake :( One change I was really hoping them to make was to add a way to keep the 2nd sword. I've always much preferred the look of the 2nd compared to the final, gold-infused sword.
I do agree that the Razor Sword looks really cool (it's even in the concept art for the game) but my personal favorite is the Gilded Sword. It has so much range, does a ton of damage, and I feel it looks the best. Still, I agree that there ought to be a way to keep an un-breakable version of the Razor Sword; I would add an item called Silver Dust you could obtain that if given to Gabora and Zubora with your Razor Sword they could temper it into an unbreakable version. It wouldn't be as strong as the Gilded Sword - same strength as before (maybe a _smidge_ more) - but it wouldn't break after 100 swings.
@@hanburgundy4317 Yeah something like that would have made a lot of sense. Also I was hoping they would have done the same with shields too. They should have revamped the inventory system to make it closer to other Zelda games so that you can switch between all 3 swords and the 2 shields whenever.
They could of maybe even had it so after you’ve upgraded the sword, you could take it back to the blacksmiths and they could make it look like a previous version with the abilities of the version you had, so you could have the gilded sword look like the razor or kokiri sword
What do you think of the remake's bosses? In which they added the overly-used eyeball weaknesses to everyone? I personally hated this change to no end.
@Paulo Penado: i personally didnt mind the "eyes" as that showed majora controlling the mask spirits that were originally the 4 giants. what i minded was the changes to the fights themselves, for example Odolwa (as mentioned in this video) was made immune to almost all attacks besides deku dropping his nuts on him aswell as the fight no longer changing as the enemy learned to counter your strategy. Goht while not changed much since most people fight him with goron (wich is the most fun) got changed aswell, causing you to change out and use the bow on him slowing the fight down immensely and was an unneeded change. Gyorg was kinda nice in the way that it wanted you to shoot him with the bow rather then just jump into the water from the start, but then the second phase happens and while an old player might catch on something is different, new players will think this is the moment to "zora swim" and try to ram into the boss. Twinmold is the worst of this 4, everything mentioned in the video is included here and to add to it, as giant link you can still only damage the head and tail. if Twinmold dives into the ground, his hit count is rest and thats what makes the fight take forever. to top this all off, all of these changes severely nerfed the reward for 100% completion. fierce deity is no longer good for clearing the bosses quickly as all of the changes to the bosses did not account for him. Odolwa is the only one you can viable fight with him and its still hard to do, his shield blocks your sword beams and he does not do more damage then the fairy sword, which at this point you would have. Goht is basically immune now (not like he wasn't someone you fought with FD anyways) only the eye can be hit by the beams and its unreliable as sometimes the beams just phase through the eye (im my case). Gyorg and Twinmold are basically the same with the changes, FD cant hit either (even in Gyorg phase one the beams dont reach and Twinmold is the same case) while before, he could sweep through Gyorg and even kill Twinmold if you timed your beams right. all of this compiling FD to fish fodder (wich correct me if im wrong, actually cant catch any fish normal link can while the other masks get specific fish) rant over, sorry for the wall of text.
@GoingBackToThe1980s What do you mean what about it? I'm talking about how many people complain that there isn't enough time in the game, when all their problems could be solved via the inverted song of time.
@GoingBackToThe1980s the song of inverted time slows down time. Your thinking the other variant of the song that skips ahead I think song of double time or whatever.
Man the zora swimming from the original was probably one of best part about the game. My only guess as they think playing on a handheld is harder? That or the play testers who never played the original probably complained about those specific mechanics
It was changed because in the Great Bay Temple you bonk into everything so easily with the original swim speed. That said, it's one of the few critiques in the video I actually agree with. They already fixed that bonking issue by having different speeds of swimming - now don't make the fastest swimming speed drain magic. Dumb change for sure.
I remember my mind being blown by the Zora swimming on the N64. It made you feel like a badass, alongside being able to do Kung Fu underwater. The fact that they took it out in the remake is so sad.
I agree with many of your points Nerrel, but how did you skip over the improvement to the Song of Double Time? The ability to skip to a specific hour significantly cuts down on the amount of time players have to wait idly for an event to occur.
@@BobJoe-dn1sc I think if you're aiming to complete a certain quest, you're not going to wander too far from where you need to be at the risk of missing an important event. This is especially the case if you've played through the game more than once.
OOT 3D has many subtle changes over the original to make it easier, too. Basically every enemy in the game attacks a lot slower. Sometime Deku Babas will just sit there and let you kill them. That never happens in the N64 version. I really have a love/hate with Nintendo sometimes.
All games are dumbed down nowadays make them easier and more accessible , even a Mario game is far far less punishing than it used to be , most of society has a short attention span and a need for instant gratification .... Anyone who's played games for 20-30 years isn't catered for now

I am amazed about how I can make a simple agreement into a paragraph but I guess that’s a power of mine welp that’s the end of this unintentional rant I guess.
One of the points you made that I super agree with was the whole "Everything was made brighter and clearer." There is something really ominous and unsettling about early 3D games. It was still a transitional stage so things could be a little more abstract and let your mind wander. Nowadays graphics are GREAT... but this makes it so stuff that looks even a little off needs to be ironed out, which is a shame. Tbh, if someone was to make a horror game nowadays I would suggest using a early 3D polygonal art style rather than any glossy unreal engine stuff or pixel stuff. Also, don't get me wrong I'm not here saying better graphics is worse, just that the modern clean aesthetic of Nintendo products doesn't jive with the old scrappyness of the N64 days.
I feel like I'm in the minority that actually feels like n64 type graphics can still hold up today as an artistic choice. Just like how NES/SNES style graphics is nowadays in indie games, but most don't touch n64 because they view it as actually outdated, which is a shame.

The fact that they altered the mechanics but kept the same level design is astounding to me. This has historically broken games when porting them. It's why Sonic Genesis sucked: The levels were built for the Sonic 1 physics, but the physics used were from Sonic Advance, a game with entirely different level design and subsequently different ways of handling speed and momentum. As a result, the game broke down constantly when the old levels did unexpected things to the Advance engine. Incompatible mechanics and level design kill ports. To do it intentionally is unforgivable.
@@islandboy9381 Good point. It was just the first example I could think of involving altered mechanics similar to what was done with the Deku mask in this game.
Yea I know what you mean, changing up the physics for a remake is a big risk but it can also pay off in a big way like what Super Mario All Stars did for the NES titles.
There's no eloquent way to say this, but putting a giant eyeball on every boss is incredibly stupid.
plasmanarwhal agreed.

Having the transformation masks on the 3 unused d-pad directions is such an obvious, intuitive, and simple improvement that Nintendo could never even consider it.

@@IonSquared You are entitled to have your wrong opinion :)
No but for real, most of what is said in this video I agree with, and for me the biggest issue is how it seems like the game lost its soul, its all bright and clean when the original game had a very heavy dark atmosphere that really sold the feeling of despair from the world being on the verge of destruction.
But yeah, the graphics being a bit too bright I also understand. It just doesn't bug me because I feel like the world is so immersive now and I don't think it lessons the atmosphere; but I get it. Either way, we both can appreciate this fantastic game.

- Giant Link and his attacks are faster so that it's less of a pain to use the 3DS version of the mask.

I honestly loved that idea cause it makes things so much easier. That's why they changed that to make it easier for people who have a hard time like me. I prefer using ice arrows in the sparkling spot so I know where to use it. Genius change. I'm very impressed.
@@HeroShades fuck off noob
@@HeroShades ...but if you can only freeze sparkling parts it dumbs it down to an extreme, it's good you can properly play the game but that restriction is not a good change especially since ice arrows in the original aren't that hard to use considering the ice blocks are so big and it really removes the point of having them as the dungeon item because before it use to be a puzzle and you would have to find the best way to use them but now that they literally tell you where to use them and only there it might as well just be an ice path that was already there to begin with
WHY DO WE NEED EYEBALLS ON EVERYTHING NINTENDO
It is literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. Imagine eyes on every dark souls boss. Just ruins the experience when you know how to defeat a boss immediately.
I actually like the thematic implication it has, with eyeballs traditionally being tied to one's ability to perceive magic and the spiritual world (The 'third eye' so to speak) and ties into the mask in it's colours well. What i dislike is the removal of all of the other things. Not the addition of the eyes.
@@bartandaelus359 lorewise it kinda makes sense as evil tends to have eyes in zelda since ancient times... also sometyhing somethimg malice eyes... the problem is how easy it makes it
They sold rareware, since then they wanted to preserve that tradition
Because it's an easy way to display weak points. Eyes have always been considered weak and they naturally look like targets so players ar inclined to shoot or hit them
I seems like every few weeks or so, this video pops up in my recommended over and over again. That thumbnail is so uncanny it’s unforgettable.
I love how they brightened OoT, but brightening MM felt like a betrayal of the original tone.
I Love the Darkness of the originals.
@@Whocares158 I can understand that, I just hate it when I’m playing a video game and can’t see anything.
:( this change is so stupid. It was so much fun trying the ice arrows on everything.
The funny thing is that remembering the original version wouldn't help there either, since, in the original version of Majora's Mask, the ice arrows don't work there. I tried it; they don't freeze the water in Gyorg's boss room.
Same
The original was made in a single year? Damn, that's the best example of using creativity to overcome restrictions i've ever seen
Well they did use the same game engine and assets from ocarina of time.
With the song of time, everything is possible 😁
that and melee. melee was slapped together within a year and turned into one of the most competitive fighting games around
If you reuse the engine and assets the largest part of development is already done, you only need to create content.
Of course there were some mechanical additions such as the time mechanic and the masks.
Fallout New Vegas had a similar story and its arguably better than Fallout 3.
That bomber kid segment was painful to watch.
Chateau Romani is the way to go if you do anything in Zora form.
Any player with a brain could connect the dots from there)
Wow, I thought this was going to be one of those "It's bad because it's not what I remember from my childhood." nostalgia-talk videos, but you actually pointed serious flaws within the remake that not even I noticed, and I played both versions!

Broke it on purpose? The speed boost from a spin attack was unintentional in the original.
With Breath of the Wild making a resurgence in Zelda games, I'd say they could potentially do these remakes better on the Switch. We already got a solid remake of Link's Awakening, so it's possible.
Link's awakening remake artstyle is crap.
Platform certainly wasn't holding them back, lack of desire to remake Majora's Mask was. Yeah that's I honestly feel as well. I never played the original N64 version and played the 3DS one cause I don't own a N64 and I'm not a huge fan of the how the game looks on the N64.
@@arekmg0003 exactly my position
I like it as a much easier version of the game but its worse as a remake of the original.
I wish Nintendo comes out with a similar bundle like Bioshock and Kingdom Hearts where you can play all of their 3D zelda games on one console. With the option to play the remake or the originals.

Fiiine I’ll rewatch this again. So, when is this video going to receive a remake?

The N64 just looked like a rock shaded wallpaper when it was near the end of Day 3, where as in the remake it feels like the Moon is actually breathing on your neck.
this made literally no sense. the original expression does not look conflicted whatsoever.

it's a late comment but
after YEARS of seeing this thumbnail, and me wondering....I finally sat down and decided to watch this video.

I'm still so thankful that it even happened. The new BOTW sequel is said to be getting the "Majora's Mask" treatment even though it has nothing to do with Majora's Mask, I do hope the BOTW sequel has that same meaningful real effect as Majora's Mask did.
Majoras mask treatment as in it being darker. How dense can you be?
The dark souls of Zelda games.
YPhoenix they probably called it the “Majora’s mask treatment” as in taking the same engine and making a new game from it...

@@thecreep5123 who shat in your oatmeal?
Something about Odolwa you didn’t mention is how much his new animations lessened his threat level. In the original, he was like a determined and quick-witted swordsman. In the 3DS version, right from the getgo in his introduction, he looks more clumsy and tired and now has moves that further cement this new look of him.
I felt this too. His model is not nearly as scary as in the 64 version. Probably has to also do with the lighting
@@PanickyRedundant Agree+changing the fight from the original robbed from me what was a cool moment in having an epic swordfight/duel with the boss. When I originally played MM as a kid, I don't think I felt the need or understood how the deku flowers could be used. I just had an absolute blast of a slash off.
lol, he must have become real-time older between the original and the remake.
I am irrationally angry that someone would destroy their own art like this

“The Moon’s face is a confusing mix of emotions, as if every negative feeling is being expressed by this thing at once”
God, that’s the best description of the moon I’ve ever heard and I keep revisiting this video because of it.
Didn't even realize it was gone in the remake :(
One change I was really hoping them to make was to add a way to keep the 2nd sword.
Gyorg and Twinmold are basically the same with the changes, FD cant hit either (even in Gyorg phase one the beams dont reach and Twinmold is the same case) while before, he could sweep through Gyorg and even kill Twinmold if you timed your beams right. all of this compiling FD to fish fodder (wich correct me if im wrong, actually cant catch any fish normal link can while the other masks get specific fish)
rant over, sorry for the wall of text.
I'm also shocked about how many people don't know about the inverted song of time.
@GoingBackToThe1980s What do you mean what about it? I'm talking about how many people complain that there isn't enough time in the game, when all their problems could be solved via the inverted song of time.
@Francis Serra I found out by accident because I accidentally talked to a scarecrow and skipped a day lol
@GoingBackToThe1980s the song of inverted time slows down time. Your thinking the other variant of the song that skips ahead I think song of double time or whatever.
I know, it's just the song of time(Down, A, Right, Down, A, Right)
i've used it to the point where i can barely imagine beating the game without it
Man the zora swimming from the original was probably one of best part about the game.
@@IonSquared how bad are you to bonk into everything ?

I remember my mind being blown by the Zora swimming on the N64. It made you feel like a badass, alongside being able to do Kung Fu underwater. The fact that they took it out in the remake is so sad.
I agree with many of your points Nerrel, but how did you skip over the improvement to the Song of Double Time? The ability to skip to a specific hour significantly cuts down on the amount of time players have to wait idly for an event to occur.
The down time taken in between let us explore
And it gives more experienced players a chance to see how much they can really do in a cycle.
Double time improvement is still cool though.
@@BobJoe-dn1sc I think if you're aiming to complete a certain quest, you're not going to wander too far from where you need to be at the risk of missing an important event. This is especially the case if you've played through the game more than once.
THANK YOU
i've only ever played the N64 version and that zora swimming in the 3DS version is depressing to watch...
It is actually practically the same speed, it just looks slower.
This is when Majora’s Mask turned into Minora’s Mask.
OOT 3D has many subtle changes over the original to make it easier, too. Basically every enemy in the game attacks a lot slower. Sometime Deku Babas will just sit there and let you kill them. That never happens in the N64 version. I really have a love/hate with Nintendo sometimes.
At least with OOT3D none of it really breaks the mechanics or structure of the game that much.
I always assumed that was just the heightened frame rate making the whole game easier and more responsive
All games are dumbed down nowadays make them easier and more accessible , even a Mario game is far far less punishing than it used to be , most of society has a short attention span and a need for instant gratification .... Anyone who's played games for 20-30 years isn't catered for now

THEY CHANGED EVERYTHING ELSE BUT THE ELOGY OF EMPTINESS?! That made me cry laugh
the 3ds version lost the creepiness of the 64 graphics

It's all about style baby. They lost the style.
eh...3ds one is still creepy but that just happens naturally
Crazed Lunatic really?wow...
The 3ds version sucks but im still gonna buy it
One of the points you made that I super agree with was the whole "Everything was made brighter and clearer." There is something really ominous and unsettling about early 3D games.
Yea I agree. Ever play turok 3 on the 64? that shit was scary AF especially being a kid and playing it.
Why I love silent Hill 1!
I feel like I'm in the minority that actually feels like n64 type graphics can still hold up today as an artistic choice. Just like how NES/SNES style graphics is nowadays in indie games, but most don't touch n64 because they view it as actually outdated, which is a shame.
@@tiarabite I think it's because it is a 3D game. 3d graphics are made to approach things to the real world, and n64's 3D doesn't do good.

My brother self-described it as a bitch slap across the face to veterans of Majora's Mask, preferring the original game over the remake.
NoEsUnUA-camr that is not why Sonic Genesis sucked lol
@@levobertus Ok, there were indeed other reasons why Sonic Genesis was bad, but fucked up physics certainly didn't help it at all.
Sonic Genesis is literally broken, MM3D isn't so I don't understand the comparison
The thumbnail still haunts us to this day.
