My bike has started running 'rough' at lower RPM's - and I just passed 50K kms so I bought some plugs from FortNine (NGK Iridium CR8EIX) for just under $80 for the four (w/tax). I will follow along again when they arrive and I want to re & re them. Thanks for all your excellent videos Mike 🙂

Reply to my reply...I watched a very informative video on UA-cam about counterfeit spark plugs (CN). The presenter did a comparison with a genuine set and a fake set, packaging was identical and there were only subtle differences between the two sets. And really the only way to determine if you have a genuine plug is to test the resistance with the ohm setting on a multi-meter. Link: ua-cam.com/video/vpH4O14EBxA/v-deo.html

Hey Mike I saw a comment of yours about the ignition issue with cold joints. Since you have no video on that one I was hoping you could assist in telling me how to remove it.
Hello, I'm guessing were talking about a bad connection on the boots. They screw on the end of the plug wire. You could unscrew the boot from the wire by twisting counter clockwise on the boot while holding the plug wire. Once off, cut about 1/4" off of the wire and screw them back on. Also there's a resistor and spring inside the boot. They can be unscrewed from the boot by using a flat blade screwdriver into the plug end of the boot. Clean and reinstall. Hope this helps.
Another issue is, there was a recall on 2nd gen bikes for the ignition switch. cold solder joints inside of the switch. I had this happen on my 05 as it's exactly the same switch. The next day after a interstate trip the bikes electrical went dead. Left me stranded. I had to remove the top of the triple tree and drill out the anti theft screws holding the lock. These bolts have no head so the lock can't be removed. Once I got the lock off, I took it apart and found a solder joint broke off of the switch leaving the entire solder bulb on the wire with no solder on the switch. I cleaned the switch and the solder pad, then resoldered all connections. I used regular allen head screws instead of the anti theft screws to put it back together. No problems since.

Just bought a 2013 FJR with 12K miles on it about 2 months ago. Whenever I buy used motorcycles (my other bikes for the past 35 years have all been dirt/MX), I always go through typical maintenance activities: oil and filter, check coolant levels, check valve clearance (dirt bikes need this frequently), maybe fork oil change (depending on hours on bike and bike type), and replace the plugs. Since this is a street bike, I've looked at maintenance intervals. The manual says for this bike to change plugs every 8K miles. Now, I know that might be if the plugs have normal plugs (not iridium). If others here run regular plugs, do you change yours that often? How well do those iridium plugs work in this bike?
Hello, I ran iridium's when I first got the bike and at the time I had vibration and rough idling. I figured out the problem was due to bad coils. After the coils were changed the engine smoothed out.
A short time later I changed the oil and plugs back to stock. So I don't have a very long track record with the iridium plugs when the engine was running correctly.
Right now I have stock plugs and I'm way past due, like twice the interval. I'm not feeling any problems. In fact it is running better than it ever did.
I did the same thing, changed all the fluids, valve check, lubed and cleaned drive shaft, triple tree, rear swing arm. and eventually used motul oil. The previous owner had shell rotella. I used it for several oil changes. It seemed to be noisy on the top end. When I changed to motul 7100, it was like night and day. I no longer hear the valves.
I'm thinking maybe I'll give the iridium's a second chance.
@@mikesfjrcorner7129 I got the iridiums and will likely change the plugs this weekend. The bike seems to run pretty smooth, but I know that worn plugs seemed to effect the bottom end on many engines I've had in the past. I don't know if mine were changed. 8000 seems like a very short life interval for plugs, which is what the manual recommends if I read it right.
Yep, it's always good to replace them. I just got very busy and did not change them when I should have. Let me know how they compare. Thanks, Mike

Yes, I plan to do it in the future. I had planned to do this this along with other videos this past winter. Unfortunately, my brother past away this winter and I'm in the process of handling his estate. Once settled, I'll have time to commit back to the channel. I'm driving the FJR 80 miles a day, So i'll have plenty of maintenance to do.
