  • I have been driving for the last two or three weeks mostly errands around town, driving 3 to 5 miles or less between stops with A/C on high, wipers and headlights and my battery did not get charged enough. So here is the conclusion in the video.

You can buy after-market GM style alternators that generate the amps you want.

Very insightful video. I had no idea that Daimler Engineers didn't put bigger alternators in these things because they thought that people won't use them for short distances. May i ask one more question. Why BOSCH battery and not a VARTA? Wasn't VARTA the OE equipment? Wonderful W126!

Varta is not available in the USA and thank you for watching!

    Hello Peter,
I wrote a comment with detailed information about an alternator from the Polish brand AS-PL.
    My comment disappeared....😮
A (in words) zero three nine five
is what you can look for....it has 90A.
I use AS-PL for years without problems.
Shipping to the USA should be no problem.
    Greetings from Bavaria/Germany 😊

AS-PL produces replacements and sometimes improves the original design...
A couple of weeks ago I changed the alternator in my daily driver, a 1998 E430, and used the AS-PL alternator. They had changed the position of the cable connections so that you are able to do the whole installation from the top of engine bay in opposite to the Mercedes original alternator where you have to work from underneath the car for cable connections...

Hi Peter.. my understanding is that the aux fans should only come on at 105c or when the ac pressure goes to 20 bars..... Unless you put a resistor on the temp sensor to kick them on earlier......for the alternator with ac and fans on at 13.50v I would think it is still reasonable..... 13.50+ should be ok no?

Hi Charles, the aux fans have two stages. Low stage, which you see here comes on at app 195F refrigerant temperature or the equivalent in psi / bar and then second stage (high stage) when engine coolant temperature reaches either 95C or 105C depending on temp sensor installed.
The problem is, which I did not show in video, that voltage drops to 12.75 with rear window defrost, headlights, both seat heaters, wipers and all turn signals activated and AC running.
This will equate to a charge time of 2+ hours to charge a 85% charged battery after one start back to full charge.
If you drive for 10 minutes, then battery is not going to charge sufficiently to recharge after each start. After visit of 4 stores and 12 miles of driving, your battery is down to 70 to 75% charge
