Dirt Daily. Ditching the Flatfender's Generator for a 1-Wire Alternator

  • Old Jeeps came with generators to charge their batteries, but new Jeeps come with alternators. On this episode I'll swap out the old generator with an alternator and super easy install brackets so my wiring and charging system are cleaner and ready to go wheeling.

Great. Now I have no reason to not convert my ‘63 AMC 232 L6 to an alternator. Damn you, Fred.

Looks like the alternator is a Delco 10Si of some sort. I think most use up to 63a since there are people still wanting to use the Amp gauge. I wholeheartedly agree to going with parts available from a local Auto Parts store when possible. In my case, I removed the 24V generator which is a beast and got a 100a Delco. I did the TLC high-torque starter since I had to replace the 24v starter too.

I am a pro, but i really like the fact that you are getting some new people interested in car/jeep work! remember the new jeep with the bad module under the hood? would like more of that stuff... or common jeep problems=rescues

Ok,why an alternator instead of a generator. Generators make DC current to charge your battery and run the accessories. Alternators create AC current and convert that to DC, via rectifiers, to charge your battery and run the accessories. So why switch? Generators are bigger and heavyer than alternators. They also reach their peak power at higher RPM. As cars got more complicated with bigger and better accessories generators became larger and heavyer. An alternator will be lighter smaller and produce their max output at a lower RPM. Imagine trying to power engine, AC, radeo, and large lights all while in stop and go traffic with a generator. It would be three times as large as an alternator, run hotter and have to rev at a higher RPM than the alternator. If you didn't keep the RPM up your battery would go dead...

Thanks Mike! I'm not sure if you are agreeing with me, disagreeing with me, telling me I got it right, or telling me I got it wrong, but I appreciate the input either way...

As I understand it, a generator produces different voltage depending on the RPM at which it's spinning, while an alternator always produces the same voltage regardless of RPM.

Solid state diodes made the alternator a no-brainer. Electronic internal regulator even better, although that's usually the first thing that fails.
Very nice adapter brackets. I make my own and they look it. More points off at Pebble Beach.

Correct. Generators make DC current. Alternators make AC current and convert it to DC.

Ps..a 70's GM Alt will replace that one if it takes a dump on the trail..just jump the wire closest to the Main Charge Wire with a butt connector..3" of wire...and a Eye hole connector to the main Charge wire..and keep the Wheels Down and injoy the rest of You Day on the Trail...

I converted my 1952 Ford tractor to 12 volts and I have a one wire alternator. It takes high rpm to start charging, but then it will charge at low rpm. My lights actually light up the area in front of it like it should.

The alternator is a 10si alternator. The only things that might be different vs a standard GM 10si alternator is the voltage regulator and possibly the windings. You can get parts for it anywhere.

One big problem with generators was they didn't charge or didn't charge much at idle.
Back in the early 1960's, Chrysler put alternators on their vehicles in 1961, GM and Ford by 1963.
I used to rebuild generators, starters and alternators in the 1960's at my Dad's repair shop back then. His specialty was electrical repair and carburetors which I learned from him. He also did a lot of general repair.
A lot of 60's cars had "GEN" lights and no volt or amp meters. At a low 500 RPM a lot of these lights came on and didn't go out until 1000 or more RPM's. Alternators solved that problem and as compact as some alternators were, I saw early ones capable of putting out 55 amps at about 1500 RPM. To do that with a generator you'd need a generator twice the size that Fred was showing there. There's more to this comparison and story, but not enough room here to explain it all.
You'll appreciate that alternator when driving at night on and off road Fred, especially if extra lights and other electrical loads are added to the Jeep.

generators create dc current. alternators create ac current that is rectified to dc.(sorry made this comment before reading a comment below. that has better detail.)

My guess is the very small pulley is the main thing that helps it run at lower RPM and not going to big on the Amps will help limit belt slip with the limited belt angles reducing wrap/contact. As you say the guy's spent a bit of time R&Ding a nice balanced system.

Hit the alternator with some OD green paint or the stuff you have on hand that got used on the bumper repair and that alternator will blend right in.

    @northmanlogging2769 Місяць тому

if it runs on batteries its going to be DC, so EV's are all DC just running crazy high voltage, like 400v or more. The AC thing from spinny winnies is because its a matter of reversing polarity of magnets, and doing so creates AC current. Rectifier reverses the - side to + via magic pixie wrangling... where as the commutator does it mechanically with large lumps of copper.

i'd be concerned about the size of the wire. it doesn't look anywhere near big enough for 75amps 12v dc even if it is just barely adequate most of the time there's no drawback to using a larger gauge wire.
