BMW i4 eDrive35 - The cheapest BMW i4 could be brilliant...except for one big problem!

  • BMW have always produced compact saloons that are great to drive, and the all-electric i4 is no exception. And we have always preferred it in the less powerful, single motor eDrive40 over the range-topping M50. But now they have introduced a less powerful, smaller battery entry level model, so could the new eDrive35 be even better than the eDrive40? And if it is, does this make it our EV sports saloon of choice? Potentially. But it has one BIG problem........

    Thanks for this review. Most other reviewers use higher trims like i4 40, 50. And I'm looking to get the cheapest one like this, so this comes really handy. Well done!

    As far as the dashboard and center console clash, I have to say that I’m a fan of it; as someone who grew up in my dad’s 525i, there’s a certain nostalgia about the car that makes it more like a restomod car than a futuristic car, which to me stays true to BMW’s classic (to me 😂) interior. Everything about this car is perfect to me as an early-2000’s kid. Great review overall, thank you for your take and the information you provided!

    Had my i4 e40 Msport about 18 months, tried other cars since and nothing comes near the driving experience of the Bmw. It just does eveything with ease, daily shopper or long distance, even tip runs, and looks a million dollars.

    Great review and very helpful. I have ordered the e drive 35 M Sport for work. Not many reviews in the UK for this battery size. This will be my first electric car, still a little nervous about the range of the 35, I could not have the longer range 40. However I am looking forward to putting some time and miles on the i4.

    I’m in my first EV a BMW i4 eDrive40 MSport Pro, the cars with the 18” wheels are conventionally sprung whereas the 19” MSport Pro cars use adaptive dampers…I would have been interested in a comparison between the two. TBH I’m not an EVangelist, I just bought the i4 because it’s a good car and doesn’t look like a fish or feels like it was designed as white goods. I had a look in the BYD and the smell reminded me of the cheap vinyl used in cars in the 70s, and again cabin quality of it and the Hyundai products was a big turn off. One thing I will add however is my car specced new was £71k which was far too much, but I bought an ex demo at £53k a saving of £18k for a 4 month old 73 plate car and I must say I’m well pleased.

      First of all, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. You certainly got a great car for a great price, and as I say in the video, we love the eDrive 40, and I still think that is the pick of the i4 range. The BMW is certainly still a quality product and is the one we would choose as a driver's car.

    When most surveys report EV take up is still being hampered by range anxiety and charging infrastructure, why are we still seeing more executive cars with executive prices and now LESS range?

    • @RTR1879
      @RTR1879 2 місяці тому +3

      Because range anxiety is something that only exists in non-EV owners. A month or two living with an EV and it's not an issue an longer. People adapt rather quickly when you never have to go to a petrol station again.

      Not experienced this with an i4 and taken it to and around Alps and to Ireland: going Spain next and can’t wait. But we all need a sensible wltp which I think has to start with a 3 or you’re asking for trouble

    Interesting detailed review thank you. Doesn’t it have the feel of being a model year run out? Standing still with design that’s frankly looking old? This seems to be the problem with legacy auto makers? They will get left behind every time they try to flog old parts and tired design. Wake up Bayern you might find yourselves a dodo sooner than you think?

    Great video except for the last minute, the BMW i4 35 (RWD 280hp) competes with the BYD Seal Design (RWD 310 hp) not with the BYD Seal Excellence (AWD 530 hp). The price of the BMW i4 35 with comparable amenities to the BYD Seal Excellence is £15000 higher.
    PS Nobody in the UK needs a car with 500 hp or more.

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  2 місяці тому +1

      In terms of power and performance, you are of course correct, the RWD Design is more comparable. However the point of including the AWD Excellence is to show that you could get the range-topping Seal for less money than the basic, least powerful i4.
      In terms of power, I do agree, over 500bhp in an electric family saloon is over the top, and in fairness, the BMW is still the better car to drive even with over 200bhp less. But again, its more about how the value stacks up.
      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

    • @Popdog76
      @Popdog76 2 місяці тому

      The price comparison is fair not the power

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  2 місяці тому +1

      But the point is how much more you get with the BYD over the BMW. In other words, even the most powerful Seal with a bigger battery, better specification, longer warranty and more range is still cheaper than the most basic i4.

    The more BMWs I see with the buck teeth front, the more it confirms just how much I dislike that look.
    I fundamentally disagree with you on the matter of BMW not making a dedicated EV. Their electric fork versions of their ICE models are signicantly compromised (space, layout, efficiency), even though they retain a BMW quality driving experience. I am always left wondering how good a new, dedicated electric BMC car might be. Those compromises are even harder to accept when one is faced with the significant price differential for BMWs.
    Whilst dedicated EV cars often offer something in the design, space, practicality which is attractive beyond just the greener aspect of driving electric, I struggle to see why I would choose an electric BMW over the ICE version (apart from not burning oil).

      The oversized engine compartment in models where the ICE option includes V6/V8 engines is a relic from the era when the size of the bonnet was a cue to the performance of the car. In an EV it's inefficient. My iX1 does lack a frunk -but at least it hasn't gone overboard on bonnet length, and the engine compartment is actually pretty full. If I had one I'd maybe keep the AC cable in it so it's accessible with a full boot and, if wet, doesn't cause problems. That's all
