Test drove all three. It was the i4 edrive 40 that I ended up ordering. I tested the M50 as well, but the car’s character and drivetrain felt mismatched. I loved the Polestar’s simplicity, but the controversial styling, range and driving dynamics where right up my alley with the BMW. The Tesla was… meh.
Agree, I test drove all three and the i4 impressed me the most so I’ve ordered one. The Polestar 2 was great fun to drive, but I felt hemmed in by the centre console. I discounted the Tesla early on as I didn’t think I could ever get used to that single screen!
None of you have made a bad choice ta all. I was really impressed by the i4 eDrive 40, and I concur, it is a much better car than the M50. It just feels better balanced and fleeter of foot. Thank you all for watching, taking the time to comment and supporting the channel. Bryan, Rod & Charlie.
I4 for me also.. except I went M50.. another 200hp was to addictive :( seen way more interest in the I4 now than back in Sept when I ordered, majority of car mags have dared to say they are better than the Tesla!
I test drove the three of them and ended up with the BMW i4 edrive 40. I'm not a big, tall person. Both Polestar and then also Volvo of course, has always been a hassle for me to make comfortable in driving. I did not get an inch of the feeling described in the test. Instead I found it harder to look through the rear window compared to the BMW and had not a nice driving position regardless how I changed chair and steering wheel. It did not respond at all in the same way as the BMW. When I went from the Polestar to the BMW it did not take many minutes before I shouted "THIS is the car". Perfect driving position and view, perfect feeling and response when driving it and also longer range. Tesla did not have that quality and felt off in comparison too and lacked the HUD that really worked for me. For me the choice was easy... BMW :).
15:35 The Polestar doesn't have a dedicated EV platform. It sits on the same platform as the Volvo XC40 which is a ICE platform that also fits hybrids and EVs just like the CLAR platform the i4 is build on.
Testdrove all three of them. Each of them has their pros and cons but in the end, BMW i4 M50 was just so awesome driving experience and quality was top notch. I ended up ordering one
The point of the grand coupe is the styling of a coupe for people who need rear doors and to be able to actually carry big things in the boot. Plus, you can turn the noise off.
Surely if the I4 is criticised for being a ICE platform the polestar has the same issue - it is based on the XC40 platform - hence why it has a transmission tunnel??
@@waynerussell6401the polestar is build on the Volvo concept because of safety reasons. Volvo is the safest car in the world. So this is a good choice by polestar that it is build of Volvo.

Very happy with my Polestar 2 Launch Model (both option packs but no performance pack) with the 480bhp software upgrade. Done 20k miles already and its been bullet proof reliable. Its a miles better product overall than the Model 3 I had before.
My brother had one for 3 months - with endless series of problems - both major and minor hardware but especially software glitches. He sent it back after it had spent more than hafl its 3 month life being stuck in a volvo Garage. Just goes to show
@@bbbf09 What major hardware problems were you having on the Polestar 2? and what car you end up getting? I had so many issues with my Tesla's and got the P2, but it would be nice if you could share some of those issues.
@@s13dad82 It wasn't me it was my brother. I think it was many and varied issues - at one point the wipers wouldn't even work....but mostly various soft / firmware issues with the navigation and infotainment not working. He was one of first owners - September 2020 - so perhaps many issues have been solved now. He also had some brackets, clips and and other hardware features come apart in side the car - like they were cheaply made - so he was not happy (given the premium £50k+ cost). After 6 weeks in a garage waiting for software updates and parts he had had enough and asked for money back - which they didnt quibble about. He eventually went for Mercedes GLA SUV type plug-in hybrid car. (Myself I have Tesla model 3 long range - which I happy enough with )
Polestar is still Volvo. Volvo has too many software bugs. I have an XC90 & the interior was great new. 2-3 years later plastics & leather on dashboard start to fall apart.
The whole point of Tesla’s existence is to produce the maximum amount of cars in the least amount of time. Without doing that, the goal of transitioning to sustainable energy fails. In order to do that, however, you need to be appealing *enough*, in many *different* areas to ensure *maximum* demand. So you do that by making an inoffensive, enjoyable, practical, *relatively* cheap car. That’s why options are limited and the design is only decent enough. At the same time, Tesla the company, need to maximise profits so they can continue to churn out more factories, to churn out more cars, to replace more ice vehicles on the road. A lot of people don’t, won’t, or can’t see it: it’s a literal example of programming in reality - like playing a game of Factory (I made that game title up in my head but I’m sure it exists somewhere). It’s pretty damn impressive that a start up, that is so focused on software and mass manufacturing, have much such and fun to drive, fun to own, practice and technologically advance car. Let along the *margins* they are making on it. Something that even experienced OEMs (and other startups) are struggling to achieve.
Exactly this. Whenever someone says a car is a Tesla killer, ask if it can be made faster and more cheaply than a Tesla. Nope? Though not. Fundamentally Teslas strength is its manufacturing, when folks insist on looking at the cars they miss the point.
@@gothmog2441 manufacturing fast isn’t always best. That’s why everyone also complains about the build quality and mismatched work in many different areas and inconsistencies like crazy
My favorite one, I will buy xxx EV, because soon Tesla superchargers are open to all EV's....LOL what?? Tesla drags all manufacturers kicking and screaming to start making EV's, now everyone else knows better. Let's see how the electric motors and batteries, software, electronic hardware hold out over time.
Well done reviews. Love my 2021 Polestar 2 launch edition (Plus, Pilot required in launch edition), no performance pack. I look for every excuse to drive it.
Test drove all three, ordered the Polestar Performance Pack and will add the 75HP upgrade OTA. Why? Most attractive design (by far) inside and out. Great performance, firm but extremely controlled drive on the limit. What could be better? BMW has more tactile ride, better build quality, better materials but I can't live with newly over-designed iDrive (having owned 10 BMW's ranging from 2002 to F80 M3). The Tesla is just beyond boring, and frankly I still don't understand how you get a type rating for a car that has no instrument binnacle or HUD for the driver and forces you to look at a centrally mounted screen every 10 seconds to do ANYTHING. Supercharger network is opening up for all EV's worldwide and Ionity et al. are pushing sites out fast so that argument will be gone by the time you get your car :)
🤣 26:09 cigarette butt gets dropped. 26:45 cigarette butt gets bored and f**ks off. Great review though. I watched every review on these 3 cars over the last year, and finally decided on the i4. The familiarity was a winner for me and the wife, and the hatchback, the range, the towing, the styling, the handling. The whole package suits us. I think the i4 is the more competant car overall. The others have very good points, but the package as a whole goes to BMW. Ordered mine last week. 😊
That's the unfortunate thing about filming in public places, we do get a lot of people coming up and talking to us. And smoking at the same time obviously! Wells potted, because I didn't spot that when I was editing it! Anyway, good choice on the i4. I want to reiterate what Rod said in his summary, it really was a hard call between teh Tesla and i4 for him. The i4 is a much more composed car to drive than the Model 3, and the chassis dynamics are way ahead of it. That being said, all three cars impressed us, and choosing any of them will hardly be a mistake. One thing is for sure, though, is that I think the eDrive 40 is better car than the M50. It's another great electric BMW. I hope you enjoy it when it comes, and thank you for watching and continuing to support us. Bryan @ AutoEV.
Polestar 2 FTW! The Polestar 2 seems to be the better *car* in general. Range and charging speed are more than good enough for daily commutes and errands. Sure, the Tesla is better for road trips (longer range, faster charging, and the SuperCharger network) but I do that at most once a year. Two of the things not liked about the Polestar in the review were directly related to an optional pack (Performance Pack) so skip that pack to save $5000 and subtract two "cons" from the review. I've had my Polestar 2 Launch Edition (without the Performance Pack) for 8 months and I smile looking at and driving it every time.
I don't understand the obsession with range; most people aren't driving on long trips very often. If you are, just rent a car for a few days... you're saving more than the cost of that on gas by driving an electric vehicle. Or if you're in a multi-car household, just keep an ICE car or plug-in hybrid for the long trips.
Great video. The BMW and the Polestar look like they have true luxury car interiors. The Tesla, at the price point it's at, looks cheap on the inside, which is disappointing when you spend that kind of money on a car. I'm also not a fan of having to use the glued on iPad to do everything, or even something as basic as my speed; seems much safer to just glance down than to my left (or right in the US). Heads up displays are the best (like the i4) - I have one in my ICE Audi and now I hate not having it when I drive my wife's Range Rover. By the way, as someone in the US, I always get a chuckle out of hearing people from the UK refer to cars as "saloons." :)
Hi Fellas, Firstly, thank you for your brilliant in depth review, enjoyed the pros and cons of each car that you all highlighted and it is good to listen to a review which has three different presenters. I test drive the Tesla Model 3 standard car and then a few weeks later I took a BMW i4 40 M Sport out for a drive. I did look at the Polestar online and spec one up and the car did catch my eye over the Tesla, I did not test drive as I could not get a part exchange on my current BMW i3, not something Polestar accommodate apparently? Long story short I signed up for a 4 month old BMW i4 M Sport demonstrator (2,086 miles on the odo) with numerous packs added for £10.5k off list price at the weekend in my favourite colour Portimao Blue. To really add the cherry on top of the cake my trade in value was £4.5k better than I received from Tesla so financially made much more sense for me. I was also concerned about the constant almost weekly Tesla price reductions then increases which as a buyer would infuriate me as I would feel I was being ripped off and don’t even get me thinking about the future residual values. So on hindsight I should have given the Polestar a test drive and more of a chance but I was not prepared to faff about trying to sell my BMW i3 to an online company like Motorway, WBAC, etc for a fraction of its worth just because Polestar’s business model does not include trade ins. In summary Tesla was not an option, Polestar has that great Scandinavian look and feel and as an ex Volvo owner I like the styling but the BMW won out for me, I just wanted to drive it and enjoy the experience. Best wishes everyone
That Portimao blue is gorgeous. We wanted it on ours, but could justify the M package upgrade cost (another $3,500 US) so we went with the Tanzanite II metallic. The car just drives so sweet.
We have ordered the BMW i4 (M50) after extensive test drives in the BMW and Polostar. In 2019 I enjoyed driving a Tesla M3 for a year. Then a year in a Volvo XC40 T5 Recharche, many similarities with the Polestar. The Tesla and Polestar are both fine cars, but personally I do not understand the preference for the Polestar. We found the finish and material use of the Polestar significantly less (premium) than the BMW. Another advantage of the BMW is that it can be made more to your own taste. The Polestar and Tesla have (much) fewer options/packages compared to the BMW. I also don't understand why the i4 40 is preferred over the M50. Yes the BMW i4 40 is lighter and cheaper than the M50. On winding country roads, being lighter is an advantage, but on the highways or while overtaking the extra power is very nice. In addition, four-wheel drive has the advantage of extra grip and therefore safety. In short, unfortunately I do not share any conclusions but I liked the review.
Thank you for watching Jeffrey, and for taking the time to comment. Let me first of all say that this was a very close call when it came down to the wire. Both Rod and Charlie kept swaying at the end the more they drove the BMW. In the end, Charlie couldn't get on with the styling and the interior, hence his final decision. Now, in the end, all three cars will appeal in different ways, but all of us agreed that the Polestar was the one we would all prefer to live with on a daily basis. But we also all agreed that the BMW is the choice for a dynamic drive in. We all like different things, and your final reckoning is very understandable and not questionable. On the basis of the eDrive 40 over the M50, I just felt that the higher powered car didn't quite deliver on its promises. That's a difficult thing to quantify in words, but I just preferred the better balance of the single motor car. It didn't feel like it was writing cheques that it couldn't quite cash. The M50 felt a bit "safe", almost like they had engineered it to have huge power and dynamic ability, but then got scared at the last minute and built in a level of safety between driver and chassis. They can still claim big power and performance, but they've taken out some of the "feel". Don't get me wrong, I agree with what you say about highway driving and the safety element of all wheel drive, but I feel simpler is better. Anyway, thanks for your well-judged (and well-mannered) comment, and thank you for supporting the channel by watching us in the first place. I hope you enjoy some more of our reviews!
Great comprehensive review. Coming from a C-Class, test drove the Tesla and Polestar (ordered a Model Y) and here is why. The ergonomics in Polestar are the poorest of the 3 especially in the front. A lot of things are placed just a touch out of comfortable reach. For example, you only have on one cup holder up front (nothing for your passenger) that is placed too far back so it is awkwardly hard to reach your hot coffee mug while driving. You have the bend your arm back to grab your cup. The way the centre tunnel slopes up really high to meet the dash also means that your inner knee is cramped especially if taller. You can’t really rest your knee to the side comfortably. That centre tunnel also makes the front cabin feel quite cramped compared to the Tesla or BMW. The main screen is too far forward meaning you have to turn your heads a touch more than in the other two. All things that with prolonged use I felt would be quite annoying. Build quality is definitely great and love the styling (those rear lights are so good) but seeing as you spend more time inside than looking at the outside the ergonomics for me were a big deal.
Polestar for me too. I tried them all and ended up getting a Polestar and I'm on week 3 and love it. I agree with some comments that the center console design / lack of storage is the weak point. If they fixed that I wouldn't have a single bad thing to say. Also for those not a fan of the taller stance, you can get lowering springs for the Polestar and the pics I've seen looks amazing. I'm tempted myself to do it.
I've been a BMW driver for many years. Currently own a 530d and it's a great car, but want to make the transition to EV. Test drove the i4 eDrive 40 and M50 a few weeks ago and loved them both, but like your review, preferred the 40. Then test drove the Polestar 2 dual motor at the weekend, was so impressed, I came back home and ordered one. When I weighed up the pro's and con's of i4 v Polestar, the Polestar for me offered better value for money. The time you added the extras to the BMW to get anywhere near to what i'm currently driving, the overall cost of motoring was significantly higher than what i'm paying now, even with the high fuel prices.Tesla just don't do it for me, so not even considered.
Yes, not considering the Tesla makes lots of sense??? The Tesla has more range, better performance and more space for the family, but hey, the BM-fan is blinded to the facts and goes for the feeling of luxury... but its your money and thus your choice. Go for it!
@@birdyashiro1226 What do you mean less save? "kekw"???? The Tesla range of vehicles has the greatest level of safety ratings available on the market. What do you mean by "yet less safety kekw"

@@pauldbeer The Tesla feels like it was put together by a bunch of IT specialists without driving licences. Build quality is shocking and like they said in the review it doesn't feel like a performance car. Turns out 100 years of experience building cars actually matters. Then lets talk about all the Teslas that like to catch fire and incinerate themselves
Thanks for the reviews, I am having an i4 delivered next week which I’m looking forward to, just a comment on the comparison, both the Tesla and Polestar tested were both dual motor, whereas the bmw was a single motor, the review feels a little unfair as it’s not quite comparing apples with apples. Clearly the bmw competes with both of the others which is good to hear. I test drove the polestar and the game changer for me was the stupid centre console which I kept banging my knee on, I also didn’t feel like the interior had the same quality as the i4, I also messed with the google assistant which failed to find my nearest charging station. I love the look of the polestar so I was a little bit disappointed in those game changing points. The Tesla was never an option for me, too many around, I’ve heard too many people complaining about the build quality. But again thanks for your review it’s been very informative
Hello David. First of all, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope you enjoyed the video. Let me first of all address your concern that we didn't stage a fair comparison. When we pitch cars against each other in a group test, we tend to do it with three factors in mind. The first is where the manufacturer sees the natural segment for their product. In this case, the i4 is BMW's compact sports saloon (ie, 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class, etc) and so in the in the EV world, this is the Tesla Model3 and Polestar 2. Next, we consider a price point. Yes, BMW do offer a dual motor i4, but that is the much more powerful, and therefore more expensive i4 M50. Using that car to compare to the Polestar and Tesla would be even more unfair, as it doesn't compete on price, and offers far greater performance. So, the eDrive 40 M-Sport is the natural rival. Lastly, we have to consider specifications, hence choosing the M-Sport as opposed to the Sport. Back to the points you raise. Yes, many have commented on the Polestar's uncomfortable centre tunnel, although it has never been that much of a problem for a shorty like me. But everyone is different. And I like the Google OS in the Polestar, but again, many don't. Its funny, because after we concluded the video and we were driving back, my two colleagues did admit to falling a bit more for the BMW, although the sway of the tech in the Tesla along with the charging infrastructure wouldn't have changed their minds, they did admit to really falling for the i4, like I had. What I find fascinating about BMW (and Mercedes-Benz to be fair) is how they are able to take one of their ICE models and so comprehensively re-engineer it for an EV application is outstanding. In some ways, you'd never know the i4 was anything but a ground up EV. I much prefer the eDrive 40 over the more powerful M50 as it feels better balanced with its power. You will not regret your decision to buy one. Its a great car! Thank you again for watching and supporting the channel. Bryan @ AutoEV.
Thanks for your reply, I can see exactly where you’re coming from, I think the point I didn’t make very well was that both the Tesla and polestar have single motor variants, appreciate the price point is different and the M50 is also a lot more expensive than it’s rivals (although I don’t know the cost of the performance model 3 cost). I really liked the drive of the polestar especially the performance and it was only the dual motor long range not the performance model. I suppose I am also biased as I currently drive a BMW 330e, which I have loved, so I already have the BMW bias! Again thanks for your review and reply, videos like yours have been invaluable to me when choosing my new car, I am a research type of person so have watched and read everything to death! Keep doing what you do, I am a subscriber to your channel and enjoy the content that you produce
I initially found the ride of the Polestar 2 too firm for all the blemishes on the road. Then I asked the dealer to soften them on the Performance Pack, since most roads are NOT a racetrack. The dampers on the Polestar 2 can be softened to ride like a very smooth luxury car. If they are adjusted at the dealership, you will never need to touch them yourself. The ride is really comfy when the dampers are softened to their max and once that is done, this car is hard to ignore!
I'm sure once the dampers are in their softest setting it will be lovely. I just still feel they should be more easily adjustable from the driver's seat, thats all. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment though.
Personally felt the ride on the non-performance pack much nicer than the PP, even with softened dampers. For me the performance pack isn't worth the money.
I’ve had a Polestar 2 now for 2 years (everything on it apart from the Performance Pack, which really doesn’t add anything meaningful) and would totally agree with this review. Love the car to bits!
Remember that there are several states in the USA where you do not need to have a license plate on the front of the car. Then the design might look a little different

Pretty soon, this great review will need to be updated with the Ioniq 6 Sedan. And Polestar has done a nice improvement for MY24 in range, power and charging speed. And BMW has the eDrive35, slightly more reasonably priced. Good competition!
Thank you, good sirs. After months of reading and watching videos I was still undecided between the i4 and the P2, but your analysis and arguments (and friendly disposition) have done it. I'll go with the P2. Best YT comparative review I've seen. :-)
What I find strange about all of these reviews is how people disregard the ride - which is an incredibly important part of the comfort of any car. Also the size. Has anyone seen how large and wide the Polestar is? It feels like you need a disabled bay or a mum and kids bays just to park it somewhere. It’s an interesting design and I like that they are doing something different. My view : Tesla - fast, less refined chassis, not enough customisation options and very bland generic styling especially at the front. No hatchback which is a major letdown for me. Polestar : interesting design, nice interior apart from the door card design, over large and wide in my view fir this segment but good value. Good compromise car. BMW: incredible ride quality, far better than Tesla or Polestar, engaging drive, but slightly fussy design inside and out and not actually as elegant as the old GranCoupe ( which I have 440i). Think I will hang onto my car a bit longer as I’m not convinced we are in the sweet spot for electric vehicles yet. BMW is a great car but just not that much better than my current car which is prettier, slightly more practical, better size and cheaper. So will wait this one out

It's the shortest by far; shorter than the i4 by 18cm and Tesla by 9cm. It's only wider than the i4 by 0.7cm and the Tesla by 1cm.

How much does it cost to replace a Tesla battery 3? According to an invoice from Tesla shared by Current Automotive, a complete 75kWh battery replacement for a Model 3 costs $16,550.67. That's $2,299.27 in labor and $14,251.40 in parts, with the actual battery costing $13,500. However, battery prices may vary depending on your vehicle model.Jan 26, 2022.... Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any estimates for battery replacement on the I4 or the Polestar 2 because they are too new.....
True, however, replacement of Batteries in low mileage EV's are rear, very rear! With the exception of a few "dutt" or faulty batteries, 99% will last way past the 400 000 mile range, or well in access of 15-years. That is longer than most ICE cars run. Even when the batteries are to be replaced or simply at end of life, nearly 95-97% of the battery can and will be recycled. I see the battery no-sayers as a wind in a tea cup, or a non-issue!!
@@pauldbeer Thank you for your response. I truly am trying to do my best research/due diligence on all these EV's before I go "all in" on a purchase. Thanks again.

The Volvo will definitely appeal to old men as it always has. The screen looks like those mobile phones with the huge buttons for less nimble fingers. My elderly parents like the Volvo (Polestar), my teenage son likes the Tesla, and being the middle-aged one who's actually more likely to buy one of these, it's the BMW for me.
I have a 2020 Tesla Model 3 and am looking to change. Test driving the i4 next week. The Tesla has been good, but I am getting bored by the poor workmanship and dreadful adaptive cruise, wipers, lights etc. It's also rattly and crashes over the poor country roads where I live. I'm looking for something a bit more refined. I'm less worried about performance as the Tesla is just too quick, and I end up driving like an idiot.
This review had all the excitement of a 1970s Open University geography lesson. Anyway, my wife got the Model 3 Long Range in June and loves it. Range, comfort, simplicity and tech are great. Based on our experience, I’ve just taken delivery of the Model Y as nothing comes close, in terms of space, performance and economy. Very happy indeed with the Teslas and I’ve come from a range of new BMWs and Audis in recent years.
BMW is the car you get for the driver, the other 2 is for other people as well. I care about what the car is like for me the driver. That’s why I have an i4 on order 😂
Im a volvo fan boy and have reviewed the Polestar 2 on my channel and also the model Y so my assumption is the Polestar is the one I'd pick as the bmw seats are too hard.
Nice review(s) When you see that 2 have very practical liftbacks, don’t you wonder why all cars don’t have one??? Can you translate for me; you noted that the BMW suspension is “spot on”, can you tell me what that means?
Thank you for your kind comments Rob. And thank you for watching and taking the time to write to us. When I refer to the suspension of the BMW, my thoughts are that it has the right balance between comfort and control. Chassis development is an art form in my book. You get some cars that are tuned so far for comfort, they lose body control. So for instance, Citroën tune a car’s suspension to be comfortable over bumps and harsh surfaces, isolating the occupants from these imperfections. And that’s relatively easy to do, you make the dampers very fluid in their movement and the springs slackened off to absorb those situations. The trade off is that through corners, because the suspension is tuned for softness, the car rolls as it goes through corners as the weight transfers to the outside of the car in a bend, making it feel like it’s tipping over. The other extreme is to make a suspension so stiff that there is no roll in the corners, keeping the body resolutely flat, but giving no bump absorption. I feel BMW have struck the right balance with this car, which is a really tricky thing to get right. Suspension supple enough to be comfortable on heavily rutted roads that also has enough control and rigidity to make sure cornering is fluid and roll is kept in check. I hope I’ve explained that correctly, but please do let me know if you have any further questions, or I’ve not explained myself very well!
@@AutoEV Hello (from Toronto, Canada) Thank you so much for your kind response. I can relate very well to your comments about the Tesla! I am getting increasingly disappointed in the noisy and rough ride in my 2020 (September) Model Y. And my wife dislikes it even more, particularly when compared to her 2020 Lexus UXh which provides the expected Lexus comfort. Have you driven one of the newer Model Ys with the softer suspension, double glass side windows etc. to see if it has improved? I have replaced my original springs with custom “coil overs” that provided some relief, but not enough. I am considering having my shop install the new softer ride springs that Tesla introduced last year. And retrofitting the front side windows with the double glass. Both of these can be ordered from Tesla. And I am toying with installing some noise deadening Kilmat material. But honestly I am not sure that all that effort would deliver the quiet and ride quality of the i4, Nissan Arriya, EV6 or Ioniq 5. My son drives the latter, so I will be trading vehicles with him for a few days. It really is a shame because the Model Y is so good for what I need. Particularly the ability to so easily find Supercharges and to pre-condition when navigating to the SC, which is rather important in our cold winters. The struggle that Hyundai/Kia are having with preconditioning is disappointing. Bjorn Nylund’s i4 winter tests are encouraging. And it appears to be one of the closest to the Tesla efficiency in his 90 and 120km/h tests, Now …. If only I could get one here in less than 1 year☹️
For the effort and money, I'd say go give the other cars a test drive. The i4, for example is loads quieter, and dead-solid on the road. @@robwanless7551
Nice review this is. I'm still indecicive. BMW i4 and Polestar 2 are both still on my list. A tip for your audio in this video, the mics could use some wind protection.
Now a new Polestar 2 has arrived. but the old one As you showed in this video it didn't have very good reviews from others when it came to charging speed or electricity consumption after the road and the navigator shows it is apparently not really correct information About how much power would be left in the battery when the person would arrive at a commercial charger
I have tested a few electric cars; Hyundai and Kia, ok cars but don't seem worthy of the price tag; Porsche Taycan, fabulous but too much for me by the time it was specked up; Tesla Model 3 great car but has no soul, reminded me of my washing machine in being great at the function but that is it; EQC (Mercedes) great but range and battery too small, old tech for a very high price point, and then the i4, which in balance was the best of all. In black it looked great and disguised the buck teeth nicely, great tech, great range and felt like quality, so that is the one I have ordered. I wanted to try a Polestar but I live in Inverness and they are the only company who have no presence up here and no test drives. I would have to drive to Glasgow, for the privilege. Tesla, although they are not here visit regularly and a test drive is easy, so Polestar did not get considered.
I live in Inverness too and I've taken a leap of faith and ordered a Polestar 2 (LR SM plus pack) without a test drive. It arrives in May, very excited!
@@dianeforsyth8019 Good luck Dave. I was tempted but I needed that test drive as I have found the experience with different cars very distinctive. I have to wait to September to get my i4 so very jealous
Thank you. I had actually ordered a VW ID3 in July last year but got fed up waiting (estimated build date pushed out to June 2022), so I grabbed a pre-configured Polestar earlier this month. My wall box was fitted October last year in preparation - I went for a PodPoint.
on a ni electric car, the navigator is probably important that it provides accurate and correct information. the purpose of it is also for you to find commercial chargers. and if it does not give correct information, it should be and the conservative way so that you have more left in the battery when you arrive at the commercial charging place than the car said you would have left. if, on the other hand, the car miscalculates in the other direction, then in the worst case you can be left behind on the road With an empty battery
I've just ordered the i4, Polestar was lovely great quality feel but I thought it was a relatively poor driving experience compared to the i4, tesla felt cheap, what you guys are calling simplicity I felt was just a lack of good ergonomics, I hated the fact I have to constantly take my eye off the road to do anything with the randomly placed iPad, nice acceleration though, I'd struggle to design an uglier car. A great video though guys.
We use Rode mics. The day we filmed this was one of the windiest days we had, and it took a bit of editing to get the levels better, but unfortunately the wind roar was quite evident, and it still wasn’t perfect however. Hopefully we will get it better next time! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. It’s really appreciated.
Every EV bought is a win in my book. The Tesla is becoming very very popular/ common these days and with good reason, the running costs are minute, they just make sense. I know 3 local mini cab drivers using Model 3’s and 1 guy with a model Y, are they set to become the new mini cab standard!? Hardly good for office or golf club car park bragging rights, fear not though the BMW cost the most, has poor range and will be built in such small numbers that exclusively is assured.
In Canada the BMW is around the same price...cheaper in some configurations and more in others. The range on our coming M50 couldn't be described exactly as poor at 270 miles EPA. It's better than average in fact. You're right though...any EV sold is a win regardless what a person buys and these vehicles are going to get their largest pool of buyers from people leaving an ICE vehicle and not switching the EV that they currently drive
@@gregmiller9957 As stated, every EV is a winner. Each buyer must examine what their own use case is when considering any vehicle. If the BMW fits the bill, it fits the bill. Wear well and enjoy!
Interesting comparo video! I like the minimalist idea of Tesla, but like the practicality of buttons, especially for basic things like the AC. Having to go into the screen or speak to the car is kind of annoying for something so basic. They should also just put a speedometer and energy meter in front of the driver in some kind of screen or read out. The Polestar has very respectful, grown up styling, but just looks too cramped in the front for the driver. Maybe it's the camera angle and will be more spacious in real life. The Beemer looks very cool, but looks busy yet luxurious on the interior. Not totally sure about it yet. Knowing that it will have better build quality than the competition is a huge plus. I'm in the market for an EV as a daily (not too worried about long trips and charging). I've tested the Tesla and liked it overall. I will test the other two shortly, so that's a big factor before I put my order in.
Not sure why Volvo felt the need to create a separate brand to sell EVs under. Volvo is as big of a name around the world as BMW. BMW knows their name will sell electric cars.
Test drove all of them, ended with the i4 edrive40.. the only thing I feel it looses to the others is rear seat space, everything else, no comparison really...

How about 1959 Cadillac Tailfins on the Model 3? That would be a styling change. Model 3 looks good, why make everybody's older Model 3's look dated? Change for changes sake?
This type of car is usually leased for three years in the USA. My Tesla will maturate its lease in March. Looking to replace it with a i4 Bimmer! Looking forward to a real auto!
The Polestar is not on a dedicated EV platform. It's on the Volvo XC40 platform. Hence, the transmission tunnel. You even mentioned the hump in the back. Was a bit amateurish.
Yes, I know it is on Volvo's platform, but that was designed with EV in mind, so "technically" it could be seen as an EV platform as it also underpins the XC40 P8 and C40. But I do take on board your comment that it wasn't explained better. Fair point taken. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@AutoEV Well, all EV's are designed with EV in mind. So that is no valid point. The Volvo CMA platform is the same concept as the CLAR2 platform of BMW. So there is literally no difference in those concepts. The only problem I had with the Polestar 2 was the interior space in the rear. It was claustrophobic compared to the other two. Otherwise good review. Thank you for that.
@@SuperHumhum I test drove Polestar 2 few days ago and really liked it. And unlike you I like tight cabin/drivers place. My only complaint in drivers place is that seats do not provide as much side support as I would like.
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. to me the i4 is the best looking inside and out. #2 Tesla. Though it's " minimalistic approach" to the interior is just brilliantly lazy just like the exterior they haven't change it and how many years now?? And #3 polestar. Can't find anything to like about it.... Maybe the price?
Polestar needs more interior room. My knee bumps steering column. Rear seat my head hits roof by door and my feet don’t fit under seat. I’m only 5ft 11inch. Not great for a pricey ride.
The BMW looks like a chipmunk or a beaver. I've always like the looks of the Polestar 2. Teslas have always been, "meh" and I can't stand Elon's arrogance. It's reminiscent of my all-time favorite car, the 2006 Volvo S60R. I traded my 2018 BMW 530e for a Chevy Bolt last year, which was to be a short term driver until the VW Buzz was available. Now that the Buzz won't be out in the States until 2024, I'm going to get something else. I'm down to the Polestar 2, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Genesis GV60. With the chip shortage, who knows how long it will take to find them to test drive and then purchase. Great review, guys.
@@TrainsFerriesFeet Strange you don't buy a car because you don't like the CEO, but you seem comfortable with buying VW, even after the cheated the whole car industry with dieselgate, and creating major damage to our planet and the people. Wow, I nominate you king of double standards.
@@TrainsFerriesFeet But you are ok supporting such behavior, and yet you have a problem with Elon. The man that made EV's go to main stream. That has forced these crooks and others to start making EV's. For the benefit of the planet, but somehow you are able to support them and not the company that made it all happen. Go buy a VW and keep hating Tesla, but you will very quickly awake, when you start using the non working non Tesla chargers on your trips, good luck with your many hours of trying to charge your car. Best you stick to home charging, don't do long trips.
absolutely disagree on tesla being disconnected from the driver. if anything it is a go-kart, super planted, super responsive (maybe even over responsive) and always goes exactly in the direction you point it. i'd like more bucket shaped seats and a bit better ride quality, but from connection with the driver perspective the tesla actually should be number one. and i do know because i have both the i4 m50 and the m3p
My brother had Polestar when it was first launched for all of 3 months. It had endless series of problems - both major and minor hardware but especially software glitches. He sent it back after it had spent more than half of its 3 month of ownership being stuck in a volvo Garage waiting parts and/or software updates. That was his experience. Given this is now a Chinese brand and quite soon we may well be on brink of WW3 with China or at least heavy sanctions it might make you think about it's future here in west.
I can't believe you guys spend 15 minutes talking about which car looks best. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, surely. This is a pub car park conversation.
It can be, sure, but what you have to remember is that at this level of spend, and the type of buyer that may be looking at these cars, design is important. BMW’s design language has been controversial of late, and as Charlie and Rod are both designers, I felt it important to get their take on each design. But we do break the reviews into chapters if anyone wants to skip to the next if they feel it goes on too long. Plus it’s the first time all three of us have conducted a video on the channel, so we are taking note of peoples opinions.
C'mon gents. If you want to be taken seriously as a review channel, you have to get your sound sorted. The wind noise is one thing, but your levels were all over the place. It is hard to enjoy the content and get sticky viewers when you allow such problems to go uncorrected in the final product.
If only you could see how fast you are going. Why oh why don't they add a heads up display. Having your speed reading a small number over to your left is borderline unsafe in my opinion. I can't help feeling bored in the tesla, minimalism can only go so far, it's like sitting in a mock up of a car that wasn't finished.
I don’t get why an EV needs to shout “I am high tec” with it’s design language. The black gurneys flaps next to the kidney of the BMW are no fakery, they guide the air to the air curtain. The polestar is beautiful, but “revolutionary design”?!?! Isn’t it just a modern interpretation of an S60? By the way, why does no one complains about the Polestar having a “grill” but about the Beamer having kidneys?
Welcome to the new car market Steve. I had a discussion with a fellow hack a few weeks ago who had a Golf GTI on test. It was £45,000 as tested! I remember when a top of the range Golf was a lot less than half of that! Cars are very expensive these days, although many are choosing to lease rather than buy, so in a way, it is the monthly payment that people concentrate on, not the total price. But your point is valid.
Absolutely agree. Have same story. Booked i40 just today
Also agree. I4 is the one for me.
And the ICE platforms are much heavier and give space over to a non existent engine.

Polestar is still Volvo. Volvo has too many software bugs. I have an XC90 & the interior was great new. 2-3 years later plastics & leather on dashboard start to fall apart.
Same experience with my Polestar 2. And it got better, also in range, with every software upgrade 🤗

Tesla drags all manufacturers kicking and screaming to start making EV's, now everyone else knows better. Let's see how the electric motors and batteries, software, electronic hardware hold out over time.
Which is exactly why they make a poor car.

The Tesla is just beyond boring, and frankly I still don't understand how you get a type rating for a car that has no instrument binnacle or HUD for the driver and forces you to look at a centrally mounted screen every 10 seconds to do ANYTHING.
Glad you like it!
That would be our choice Scott. The Polestar 2 without the Performance Pack, so we wholeheartedly agree with your choice! Well done sir!
By the way, as someone in the US, I always get a chuckle out of hearing people from the UK refer to cars as "saloons." :)
you can use the wheel on the steering wheel of the tesla. And use voice command
The Polestar2 is not built on a dedicated EV platform, it built on the Volvo CMA platform, like BMW it's also used for ICE vehicles. It's an EV XC40.
But the polestar is truly the best car of these ones. And I’m talking about the 2024 models. Beautiful and great driver.
@@andreasl4507 the i4 is much better car than the Polestar.
Hi Fellas,
Firstly, thank you for your brilliant in depth review, enjoyed the pros and cons of each car that you all highlighted and it is good to listen to a review which has three different presenters.
Well a similarly equipped BMW M50 will cost ALOT more than the other two. At that point it’s not nearly as much an apples to apples comparison.
The BMW M50 has an understeer tendency that the E40 does not share, hence the more sprightly reputation of the RWD model over its AWD siblings.
If you base your car choice on the position of the cup holder you've already lost.
@@matc1603 sigh, I guess “ergonomics” is too big a word for you 😉

Polestar for me too. I tried them all and ended up getting a Polestar and I'm on week 3 and love it. I agree with some comments that the center console design / lack of storage is the weak point. If they fixed that I wouldn't have a single bad thing to say.
Also for those not a fan of the taller stance, you can get lowering springs for the Polestar and the pics I've seen looks amazing. I'm tempted myself to do it.

I purchased the i4 40. I love it.
Go for it!

Great review and comparison. This is one I’ve been looking forward to, and it did not disappoint! Thank you!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Wow, what a genius! A button to adjust the suspension! Brilliant!
Polestar for me. I ordered one this past Tuesday. Should be delivered in June.
I’ve had a Polestar 2 now for 2 years (everything on it apart
from the Performance Pack, which really doesn’t add anything meaningful) and would totally agree with this review. Love the car to bits!
Remember that there are several states in the USA where you do not need to have a license plate on the front of the car. Then the design might look a little different

Thank you, good sirs. After months of reading and watching videos I was still undecided between the i4 and the P2, but your analysis and arguments (and friendly disposition) have done it. I'll go with the P2. Best YT comparative review I've seen. :-)
Well done that man! Glad we were of some use! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

BMW i4: 4,783mm L x 1852 mm W x 1448 mm H
Tesla Model 3: 4,694 mm L x 1,849 mm W x 1,443 mm H
I have no idea where you get the idea the Polestar is "big".

When you see that 2 have very practical liftbacks, don’t you wonder why all cars don’t have one???
@@AutoEV Hello (from Toronto, Canada)
Thank you so much for your kind response.
I can relate very well to your comments about the Tesla! I am getting increasingly disappointed in the noisy and rough ride in my 2020 (September) Model Y. And my wife dislikes it even more, particularly when compared to her 2020 Lexus UXh which provides the expected Lexus comfort.
Have you driven one of the newer Model Ys with the softer suspension,
double glass side windows etc. to see if it has improved?
And it appears to be one of the closest to the Tesla efficiency in his 90 and 120km/h tests,

You don't get Gran Coupe? It's just a hatchback shape. Mondeo hatchbacks were the best why BMW have struggled with them is a surprise.
Now a new Polestar 2 has arrived. but the old one As you showed in this video it didn't have very good reviews from others when it came to charging speed or electricity consumption after the road and the navigator shows it is apparently not really correct information About how much power would be left in the battery when the person would arrive at a commercial charger
We’ve tested the new one as well.

Polestar wins and dam it’s a hot car might get one .
on a ni electric car, the navigator is probably important that it provides accurate and correct information. the purpose of it is also for you to find commercial chargers. and if it does not give correct information, it should be and the conservative way so that you have more left in the battery when you arrive at the commercial charging place than the car said you would have left. if, on the other hand, the car miscalculates in the other direction, then in the worst case you can be left behind on the road With an empty battery

@@RemoteSpeed007 VW has paid the price, and will continue to pay the price for Dieselgate.
Collected my MY yesterday. It’s in a different league to the Polestar and BM. Utterly thrilled by it .
5.7s ...seems to be faster. Yes it is was measured from other Yt..it is 5.1 to 60mph, since this is only 92km/h and 5.7s is the value to 100km/h
60 mph = 96.56064 km
The Tesla 3 looks nice from behind if you stand, for example, 20 meters from it. Even some young women apparently agree with me
Oh dear! with the sound quality...
The Tesla reminds me of the ugly Chrysler Neon that was sold here in the late 90’s
But thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. It’s very much appreciated.
C'mon gents. If you want to be taken seriously as a review channel, you have to get your sound sorted. The wind noise is one thing, but your levels were all over the place. It is hard to enjoy the content and get sticky viewers when you allow such problems to go uncorrected in the final product.
Noted, and we are working on it. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment constructively.
i4 all the way
Minimalistic always dates well, less to go out of date
It’s not the grille so much as the size of them. I like the double kidneys on the i3, and the 3 Series, but they are a bit big on the i4.
Got it. I guess that’s why I love these kidneys because they remind me of my 72 Camaro.
@@oolleehaagan6212 that’s a good and decent spin on it! Very much approve of the analogy!
The wind noise is so irritating that I can't continue...
I just cant get my head around how much these cars are being sold for.In parts of England you can buy a house for less.
