    Hey derrick when youre board waiting for bait, while they are loading up bait you can fish for halibuit and sand bass by casting near the bait barge. This guy was using a hook up baits for a sandy but hooked a halibuit and it was pulling drag. or dropshot with a 2 oz torpedo with a 4 inch zoom fluke (reccomend the white split tail ones)

    • @DerrickVan

      LOL, that's how I feel. The best feeling is when the line starts screaming out and you set the reel in gear -- or whatever the case depending on these new methods, and the second best feeling is after the gaff. The rest is just work, LOL.

    Your drag is to loose my friend. Your short pumping and winding for zero gain all along he's still taking line. Also when your using the rail try putting your left hand on the reel instead of holding the forgrip. The rod is twisting and turning with the wobble of your reel. In short you're fighting the rod and reel just as much as your fighting the fish. Not very efficient

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  2 роки тому +1

      I had the crew set my drag. Most of the time I wasn't gaining was due to me trying to use my rod as a rail rod when it was not stiff enough to do so. It was my first time fishing with 50lb line so the fish seriously kicked my butt. Excited to go out again since I learned from my mistakes this trip

    • @DerrickVan

      In the video I included the seminar from the crew he talks about the rig I used. I used a ringed circle hook and I toed my main line to the ring and tied another 5ft piece of mono onto the ring and that went to my sinker

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  2 роки тому +1

      @@natebeefy yeah I like it because I like having the weight on the bottom so that when I grab my hook the weight doesn't swing everywhere. The old rubberband rig got bit more on my trip though so I'd say its a new technique worth trying out but I haven't proved it works better yet. In theory it would be better since you can bomb your bait down to the level the captain is marking fish but in practice it doesn't really matter during a slow bite where presentation is everything
