    You were lucky you went on Wednesday or Tuesday. It was wide open those days. On Thursday and Friday, it shut down hard for the entire fleet. Too much boat pressure and the fish were more gun shy. We went back the next week and the whole area was empty. We hooked up 7 fish that day in the same area. We told some friends and they went out next day and caught two 100lbs fish. There are some nice big ones out there mixed in. Life is good!

  • @ahndeux
    @ahndeux 3 роки тому +2

    Nice.. Next time, let the fish run for about two seconds, put it gear and wind but don't set the hook. Let the fish set the hook themselves. If you let the fish set the hook, the hook will end up in the corner of the mouth if you use circle or J hooks. If you hooked the inside of the mouth, you're at the mercy of the teeth sawing your line off. You would have hooked up the first fish if you let it run with bait. Its not bass fishing where you yank at the slightest bite. They take the entire bait down and run with it. If you set the hook, they would spit out the bait if there is any slack. With tuna, you wind wind wind... Wait till the fish get up to 40 to 80 lbs. It would have rocked you. You would be crying for mercy. We were out in the same area in private boat about two weeks ago and hooked up some big ones from 35 to 45lbs. Once the weather gets better, we are heading out there again for more.

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  3 роки тому +1

      Alright, I'll keep that in mind, first time tuna fishing still got a lot to learn!

    • @ahndeux
      @ahndeux 3 роки тому +2

      @@DerrickVan When the captain told you to wind wind wind, you weren't even hooked up fully yet. He thought you had fish on. Your reel is probably a 6:1 gear ratio. At the rate you are winding, you were winding too fast. Just calm down, let the fish bite and take the line, put it gear and wind until its tight. Its pretty easy with tuna. The main thing you have to watch out for is to always check your knots. Best way to tell is put hook in a ring and pull as hard as you can. If it doesn't break with almost 20+ lbs of force, you have confidence in your knot. The only thing that can cut you off is someone's line or if the line goes across the tuna's teeth and nicks the line. That is why you use fluorocarbon leader. It can withstand abrasion better. Good luck next time!

      @@ahndeux yea I kinda freaked out there since it was the first drift of the day and I got too excited and did everything too early. I was on high gear at that time so it was 6:1. when fighting the tuna, try and keep your tip up, sometimes the tuna will swim right at you and then if you are pointing your rod at the tuna you’ll lose tension on the line, always try and keep your rod tip up so you don’t lose line tension. You were doing a good job of that at the end of the fight but at the beginning it was a little hairy.

    When was this trip? I went out of Seaforth on an extended 1 1/2 day trip. We were skunked the first day but we were up in Catalina on Tuesday the 11th, and we were able to get boat limits on the bluefin. What seemed to work better than nose-hooking them was butt-hooking a sardine. Either way, from what I read these fish went AWOL by Thursday, and pretty much most boats had to go hunting on Friday.

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  3 роки тому

I landed 2, and 2 fish I hooked came unbuttoned, I'm guessing from using small hooks. They had us using really small hooks that day, I guess because the bluefin can see bigger hooks. Edit again: I just checked out the fish counts out of 22nd street. The Amigo and Freedom both got BFT. I guess the bite is back on -- for now, until all of the fishing pressure will scare them away.

    You think its worth taking my rod and reel, I have a pen 5500ss and shakespeare 20-40lb rated rod. It was given to me a while back and i am new on gear.. The catch is I only have 15lb mono on it. Supposedly brair is a nightmare on the 5500ss and is rated for 30 tops. I tried spooling 30lb mono and it just pops off the reel.
    I have someone lending my gear but I wanted to take my rod n reel but I'm afraid it's a little on the skimpy side with my line.

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  3 роки тому

      I wouldn't use 15lb on any trip. Lowest I recommend is 20lb. If a yellowtail bites you on 15lb test you might as well lost it. If you want to really into the sport I recommend putting out $200 for a spinner setup, and if you have a $100 more to spend I recommend a baitcaster or conventional setup because its easier to flyline on those.
      But since you already have the gear from your bud I think you should just leave your Penn at home, on the boat you will probably not use it so might aswell save yourself the trouble of moving around a heavy setup.
      Hope this helps

    why cast when wind is blowing at your face. ?

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  2 роки тому

      The boat is drifting so when you cast wind in your face the boat is being pushed away from your bait. When you cast wind on your back your bait eventually gets pushed under the boat and tangles on the other side

    I don't understand guys with spinning reels fishing for tuna. Why don't you buy a 2 speed reel and conventional rod 20-50lb.

    • @DerrickVan
      @DerrickVan  2 роки тому

      Some people just don't want to shell the money out because they don't go fishing that much, or they come from a place where spinners were their workhorses like Florida. It was way harder fighting a tuna on a spinner but whatever floats their boat. The same methodology with people who fish with spinners facing the sky, I tell them it's way better fishing it down but they end up pointing it up in the sky again. I would never fish spinners again on boats unless I had to I will always be grabbing my conventional, there is a time and place for spinners and bluefin just isn't it lol. Thanks for watching my video

      @@juanablaze1889 They are still around. I can guarantee it. Its actually better when people don't know and all the googans come out and scare the fish away. We found massive boils and foamers half a mile long. The fish got spooked and was not around crowded areas. We were marking tons of tuna under the boats down around 100 feet below. The key is to get away from the massive armada of boats. We hooked them about a few miles from the big floatilla of boats. The fish in the foam was about the same size of the one shown here and some even football size. The big ones are on the outside of the foam. They were in the 40 to 80 lb range. Some hooked up 100 lb fish too. It was insane!
