      I traded a friend a Gibson LP Std. gold top. He lightly dropped it on his couch to answer the phone and the headstock sheared off. Of course, the headstock popping-est guitar ever was the insanely heavy Epiphone Genesis model of the late 1970s, early 80s. Near impossible to find one that hasn't had a repair, and if you do, they want too much, ha. But having owned a Gibson LP Std. and the Genesis at the same time, I can tell you the Genesis makes a LP sound like a Telecaster. They got the fattest HB tone ever, really nice.

      My 90s SG has seen better days, though it’s Gloss Black and that shows EVERYTHING if it’s not 100% perfect, but never had an issue with the headstock (probably helps that I replaced the strap buttons with something more of a Fender style and I use a locking strap (one of those planet waves ones), I tried the Dunlop strap lock system on an old Accubass I rebuilt for a family member (this monster weighed a ton).

    One of the best playing guitars I own is a 50's style two tone sunburst Strat made from South Korean parts and assembled by luthiers in New Jersey and sold through Sears in the late 60's. It plays better than any fender I ever owned has no skunk stripe and no hole in the headstock like a real 50's Fender Guitar. The Tone is unbelievable. The neck was warped when I got it and I looked at it as a worthless piece of junk and left it in the garage with my Motorcycles in an old boogie case for ten years. New York winters straightened out the neck! Solid Ash body with a maple neck! I am no luthier but I filed the wayward frets and replaced a pot switch and it played so much better than my 68 Blond Strat that I gave the real custom Strat to a friend of mine and kept this thing!My Sister in law got it for Christmas when she was a kid. You play one chord on this thing and it is unbelieveably 1968. Screw the Brand! I almost put a fender decal on the headstock but this guitar deserves to be just what it is! An outrageous Guitar! And my friend may think he got a deal on a Free Fender Custom but I kept the better playing guitar and that is what a guitar should be about!you can rebuild , Refret,and Change Pickups till you puke! I am Just some idiot that plays guitar, and this thing sounds better and plays better than a real Fender, it has a mellow groove ,whereas my Fender screeched like some ex Girlfriend sliding naked down a splintery two by four.You can never Judge a book by its' cover says I! What a guitar looks like means nothing! Be it covered with Tobacco Smoke and Dog Shit may make it play better! And Sometimes leaving well enough alone and setting it aside for a while is better than trying to immediately Remove any trace of the previous owner!

  • @nealixd.3011
    @nealixd.3011 3 роки тому

    It sounds strange now, but because the Ibanez RG series and other shredders were so popular in the late 70s, the joke among a lot of guitar players was that you could hardly give away a Gibson Les Paul, let alone sell it. They only cost about $375 new. Hence, Gibson made the Les Pauls with the factory installed flat Kahler whammy, locking nut and the thinnest neck you ever saw on a Les Paul, to try to compete with the shredder guitars. I owned a 1979 Gibson LP Std. that had the Kahler removed and top patched circa 2003 to 2009. I have seen and owned a lot of Gibson Les Pauls since the late 1960s, and that '79 had the thinnest neck I ever saw/played on a Les Paul. It was heavy though, a 10 pounder.

    • @nealixd.3011
      @nealixd.3011 3 роки тому

      Oddly, I bought the '79 at now gone Players Guitars in Jackson, TN, in Casey Jones Village. The two good old boys there, who knew Carl Perkins and had some autographed pix of him in the shop, thought the flat Kahler whammy was an add on, and had removed it and patched the top, etc. It was definitely ruined for vintage value, but was a nice player. They had refinished it from tobacco sunburst to a gold top. A guy who knew his stuff back in Memphis at Yarbrough's Music explained to me what the real history of the guitar was. He had the experience and eye to point it all out to me, from vestiges still left under the paint, the locking nut holes, etc.

    • @nealixd.3011
      @nealixd.3011 3 роки тому

      Players had the '79 up high at $1250 or something like that. But, they gave me an amazing trade in value of $4 more than I had in the Chicago Blue Gibson Blueshawk that I had bought new, including the nice light brown Canadian TKL with pink throw blanket OHSC I had bought used years before by accident, thinking it was an SG OSHC, so I just paid the extra $550 by check after trade in value, and took the LP home. The Blueshawk was cool, esp. in looks, but I never really liked the P-90s on it that much and the varitone control was sort of weak or odd sounding in most positions, so I was super happy to get such a great trade in value on it and liked playing the 79 LP a lot better.

      It was definitely that Wall Street Trader idiot Henry J. who ruined Gibson. They were a little bit pricey, but still affordable, until he took over in the late 1980s. He was not necessarily such a terrible guy (remember Obama and crew raided him, but not Martin for the same exact alleged wood import crimes, that was pretty obviously political), but he really turned the average working musician against owning Gibsons when he immediately jacked up the prices upon his ownership of the company. After that, when you assessed the risks of live gigs to the cost of buying a Gibson, I just went way more Carvin, Fender, Ibanez, G&L and other brands after that, although I still own three Gibsons and one Epiphone.

    One and done for me. I bought a studio new at Sam ash. It played like shit. The frets were sprouting. Never again. And the fact they charge so much when their quality has took a nose dive is just a testament to how much they don’t care. You can buy a schecter at half the price and have it slay a Gibson as far as playability.

    I have that junior, bought it used, came with a new nut, kluson tuners, gutted it for cts pots, orange drop capacitors, treble bleed and I dropped an antiquity p90 in it. Thing plays amazing, it’s so loud acoustically and really resonates

    • @mikeellis9720
      @mikeellis9720 3 роки тому

      My 58 single cut Jr. has a nice, clean but warm tone at low volume, then you crank it up and it's insane! In the 70's I ran it through an Ampeg SVT with 2 cabs & 16 ten inch speakers. That thing sounded like the live version of Missippi Queen. Yeah, I'm old. Still playing.

    • @Livelaughlimpbizkit
      @Livelaughlimpbizkit 3 роки тому +1

      Mike Ellis that’s amazing, jr’s and specials are my favourite guitars, I only have a 2015 (one in the video) everyone hates that year but I changed out the crap parts (got it really cheap) and now it plays amazing. I’m planning on getting an Eastman jr too.

    • @mikeellis9720
      @mikeellis9720 3 роки тому

      16 Tens. 750 watts RMS. 1500 Peak Power. Too Much. The 70's were all about BIG Amps, Loud Volume. The Stones used 2 Ampeg SVTs per guitarist in concert. Good thing I only needed one! I had to buy a Step-Van to move it around. It's long gone now but I still have Jr. With the original price tag. $120 in 1958. I was one year old.

    And don't forget that eBay now charges sales tax on everything. In some places that can be up to 8 1/2% or more ! So on a $2,000 Guitar that can be up to $175.00 just in tax ! And they charge tax on the shipping as well ! You can thank Donald Trump for that one ! "He" signed it into law !

      Sales Tax here in Tennessee is 9.75%.
      However, we don’t have state income tax and property tax is reasonable in most places especially if you’re not paying city and county property tax. Another plus of the high sales tax is that Tennessee has (or at least had pre COVID Shutdown) a large tourism industry which generates a lot of sales tax revenue. Additionally, for residents near the border I think every state that borders TN has a lower sales tax, and the majority (if not all) of the state is within an hour’s drive of the nearest neighboring state.

    • @kevinpatton108
      @kevinpatton108 3 роки тому +1

      Actually its a state by state law, made possible by the supreme court in SD vs Wayfair, thats why Reverb keeps adding states. Not a national thing that would be all states at once which is what the President would do.
      I could understand a business paying tax, but paying tax for a used item that already had sales tax collected is crazy. Just another way for the government to get in your pocket.

    • @charlesbolton8471
      @charlesbolton8471 3 роки тому

      Kevin Patton
      I totally agree with you on the collection of sales tax on used items in sales between two individuals. It is absolutely ridiculous.
