That Ventura MIJ was awesome for 695 that a sweet guitar and a great player. I’ve got a couple 70s MIJ ibanez Gibson law suit era and they are phenomenal guitars. The craftsmanship on MIJ stuff in that era is some of best.
yeah I was going to say to Trogly-chances are that's a Matsumoku MIJ Ventura-I have one of those-and they are epic. They can be so rare that even Trogly has never heard of them. They shred. Mine's a a 1971 Black Beauty. 🙂
There’s an Orville EB-3 from the 1990s on Reverb, it’s got the traditional varitone setup, unlike the “SG Bass” they’ve been selling now, and it’s short scale (Unlike the last Epiphone EB-3 which was full 34” scale and just made the neck dive worse.)
Gibson does have a database. I own an ‘81 LP Standard, and a ‘77 Flying V, and I have spoken to them more than once about these guitars. They were able to identify them.
Loved the old roadworn EBO ... (I have a weakness for it only as my first Bass was a fair EBO copy ... not because of it's tonal characteristics ! Mind you, it would be fascinating to hear the tonal range from the additional pickups ...).
Ventura still has a model of Guitar of their own under the Kaman or now Ovation in 1983 with a single Ventura model Ovation at least in the 2000's. Just looked that up.
Yeah so Triumph Motorcycles & Gibson Custom Shop worked together to make a 1959 Les Paul Standard & it’s pretty cool looking, maybe try & get a hold of one to review & demo?
I think what sticks out to me on that "Custom" is that the binding is just way too wide, it looks like it's something like 1.5 times too wide and makes the top look ... "cramped", sort of.
10:22 Using a water bottle as an improvised neck rest is actually pretty clever. Full or empty, as long as the cap is on tight it’s all good. Empty might be the safer option.
Ngl, if I could know the back story behind that SG Franken-bass I would totally buy it. I think it would be better marketing to just list it at a higher price and claim that the shipping is free though.
I owned an Ibanez Les Paul Custom in tobacco sunburst with a set neck in 1980. IMO it was 98% as good as my 78 Gibson LP custom with the same finish. Wish I had kept it as set-neck Ibanez’s are hard to find these days. Would love another one 40+ years later. The Super 80 pickups were killer.
I have a Jay Turser sg with an ebony finish. It has guitar fetish p90s in it. And it plays amazing. My dad has more guitar knowledge and he says that it almost beats my Jackson in a close game.
"Why did they sink the shaft of the pot through the knob" looks like a Big Boncc, as someone I know would put it. Just a good smack on a hard surface maybe? The chipping looks like blunt force.
Trogly, get former governor of the State of Minnesota Jessee Ventura,to ride in a Pontiac Ventura driving down Ventura boulevard, listening to America playing "Ventura Highway" while strumming a Ventura Les Paul !
Those were EMG Select pickups, which are passive, and also sound like absolute rotten dog turds. If you don’t like EMG’s you’ll reeeeeeeeeally hate their cheap junky pickups.
I had EMG selects in an 80's Epiphone Spotlight I think it was called. It had a Steinberger trem and it was neck through. Really good guitar, buy yes, absolute Dog doo pickups.
@@misterghee1 yeah, sure! Judging by the headstock and the gap at the humbucker that could fit a 24 fret neck, they really missed out on the marketing opportunity of having Stevie Wonder as a master luthier!
Watching made me thing of mine I have an 70's les Paul copy I think it had no name on headstock looks like humbuckers in it but are single coil!! I had to sand it because when I got it the paint work was damaged, it's a ply body, with really nice figuring on neck, (bolt on)I have no idea what it is can anyone help me?😁👍
Hi Chris, I had an El Degas bolt on white ply LP copy, gold plating, humbuckers. Pretty good. The guy I gave it to forty some years ago still plays it! If remembering correctly, I think I had heard that a manufacturer shipped the same model in batches to various companies and stores around the world who would then decal their own unique name ID on the guitars.
Hey man that's funny - I was going to bid on that bass - I tried to get him to come down on the shipping - he says he doesn't ship ground because he's had complaints that it took too long to get there 😉
What a fun episode to watch, lots of cool Les Paul's and IDK but that 82/83 Les Paul just seems like there's something fishy going on with that one, let the buyer beware!
You think maybe a Delorean and a reclusive Doctorate physics professor had something to do with that guitar? Oh look apparently the owner was one of those that used doritos chip picks to play. I'm with you on that LP. At $3500 I'd just as soon buy a new or used model that I know can be proven original Authentic. Lol That 78 3 pickup LP is gorgeous even with the little imperfections.
Most likely sites like aliexpress. From what I've heard they range from decent to absolute garbage. If you do buy one and import it make sure the headstock dosen't say Gibson or it might get seized by customs for being a counterfeit.
@@zaccds you will find the most of the good ones are starting out at the Epiphone plant in China. I currently have 3 and I know for a fact that 2 of them were built on the side by employees. Both have fret nibs and all Epiphone parts. They have Epi stamped on the Pro- Bucker pickups and all the hardware. Full size CTS pots, and very nice wiring. Unfortunately the last 2 , I custom ordered were seized by US customs . I invested between 2 and 4 hundred in each and have had many experienced players say how great all 3 play. Since I never intend to sell them I have no problem owning them. Had I purchased the US versions of these it would easily have cost 10,000 dollars. All 3 from China with upgrades are $ 1500. I also have 7 US made Les Paul's each costing $ 3000 or more, so Gibson definitely got there money from me. PS: the seller I delt with is no longer there.
Old does not mean vintage. There are a lot of old guitars that are just that...old. Doesn't mean they are bad or good, but they are not vintage & never will be. Reissues and copies are never going to be vintage. This is why a lot of people don't refer to most Norlin era Gibson's as vintage. I own a '70 Gibson SG. It's not vintage. It's old. It's a great guitar but it's never going to be vintage. I love your videos but you really need to stop throwing around the term vintage for every single guitar that is old.

It looks like he either rolled the finish on or dipped in a bucket with varnish and dirt. I think it is a fake.
“Select by EMG” is to EMG as Squier is to Fender, basically. Licensed copies, passive as others said.
I saw that on Ebay too. I was thinking "From what I've learned from Trogly, that can't be real"🤣
9:40 That's trapezoid, not parallelogram.
I love the lawsuit guitar stuff. You should take a dive into it because its a fun historical look into what was most peoples first guitars.
Whys the stop so far past the knobs
I loved the EBO, so worn, dirty, over modded but yet very cool. I see potential for that one!! Thank you Trog!!
I can’t find that on ebay, even on the sold one…

Haha same as Dutch Egmond (Martin company) you knew from 100 meters 1every hunderd where great even Jammn it👍😊👍
The volume knobs on that Gibson are the first tell-tale sign, no?
yep, the neck volume know is an inch too far north...close to the top of the guitar.
Austin, the arrangement of the knobs in relation to the stoptail is incorrect. Gotta be a replica.

it could be an employee in Kalamazoo using up parts before losing his job. being from the Kalamazoo area I've heard stories of guys doing that
That questionable Gibby, due to the placement of the neck, is it still a 24.75" scale or is it now 25.5"?
Thise are select by emg which are passive emgs which sound great in my experience
That B string is almost touching the tuning peg for the high E

Obvious to see where Hamer got the Sunburst and Special design, that Les Paul double cut.
