These sales are quarterly and bidding is usually in person or phone/email - sale over two days. All the prices you quoted are 25% higher after charges.

They have the sold prices on the website if you're interested in finding out what they went for. The walnut strat went for £1650 but you'd have to add on the Buyer's Premium and all the additional surcharges for absentee or online bidding, plus packaging, shipping, export/import duty, sales taxes and CITES.

Trogly, man, I love your show, but in the last month you've hyped the fender fmt with spalted maple top, and now the auction where I was trying to sneakily get one after being gazumped in the last seconds repeatedly on ebay since your vid... Used prices definitely went up after you posted. I've been hunting this holy grail for six months+, so I cursed you this morning when I saw this upload. I got it though, and for a decent price as well. Hooray!

The Burns brand is famous for The Shadows and also for making some replicas of Brian May’s Red Special, which has Burns elements from the start. You overlooked a Vista Squier that is way underpriced.

I only know of Hank Marvin, because he was such a hugh influence on Mark Knopfler. If The Trogmiester was more of a Strat guy, he might have heard of him, before now. I realize, here in the States, we don't get the mix of music that other countries get. It is a tad isolationist. It goes along with the fact, most people in this country, speak only one language and never make it, outside our borders.

I live in the UK and have been watching these guys for about 3 years. The estimates are reasonable but the good ones go for well above the estimated prices and by the time you add the 25% premium it's not so great.
There are deals to be had but the collectors market in the UK is strong.
Check out the sold prices in another video, it might be interesting to see, but don't forget to add that buyers premium.

@John Clark, I think you meant to say the EU, rather than the Eurozone. If you are buying from outside the EU then you will have to pay import duty, which is levied by the country of the buyer and varies depending on the type of goods and the country. Looks like they might also charge VAT on the buyer's premium, since that's a service charge and not a good, I guess.

I noticed you scrolled past one of those First Act Custom Shop guitars. They're hard to come by but these things are GREAT. Ik that sounds insane but they're USA made by a group of Luthiers and really are top notch. They usually pull a pretty high price tag tho. If you ever get the chance you should definetely try to get one on the channel. Not alot of people know they even exist so I'm sure it would pull in some good views out of curiosity, plus there's tons of models they did. At least 50 floating around out there. They're all handcrafted as well. I was in a music shop in North Carolina last year that had one, a prototype from Brent Hinds from Mastodon that Brent had sold for $6k in 2018 on Reverb, I got to play it for about 5 mins and man... such a quality guitar esp the tone and way it played. Had Kent Armstrong custom hand wound pups too. Was dated to 2008. Such an unique instrument. Please try to get one eventually!

Thanks Trophy, the Burns "Bison" was a big model in the sixties, the one pictured was a Burns "Marvin" named after famed "Shadows" guitarist Hank Marvin. The "Shadows" switched from Fender to Burns guitars about 1964. (?) Both the "Bison",and the "Marvin" where made til about 1980.The company is under new ownership at this point.Looks like they are aiming at 2021 to be back in business.

I have bought from this auction house before. Once you add in the selling fees and delivery costs the price rockets up. Plus, non trade bidders bump the price up to above retail. When the auction is over check out the final price, add on the fees and delivery and then see how insane the prices are. No bargains to be found here.

Hi Trogly, I’ve been to one of their guitar auctions, it is usually an in person auction. It’s an awesome experience. If you ever fancy a trip to the UK I’d recommend going to it, they usually do 1-3 guitar auctions a year and you can sometimes get a good deal. The burns are a British guitar brand, they declined when the import embargo from the US ended in the 60’s

The six course guitar is a classical guitar from the baroque era I believe. The frets were made from gut. They were adjustable as they were tied on. They also had 10 strings as I remember. Two strings weren't paired and were used to play melodies. It's old stuff.

    Het Troglodyte,
    Would like your opinion.
I was watching a famous blues, rock guy Joe Boss(can't remember how to spell his last name) he is a very well knowed and respected man in the music industry. He has old guitars and someone asked him what year certain models where, he could only guess. The other person doing the interview mention that he could pull the neck to find out the correct year. He said it didn't matter to him, and he said "when you pull a neck off to read signature and such, when you put the neck back on it never seems to play or sound the way it originally did" so he avoids pulling the neck no matter what. How do you feel about that. I mean he said it's never the same. Thanks and TAKE CARE

Gardiner Houlgate are an auction house not resellers, so I doubt they would do returns and you need to arrange your own shipping. I sat through this auction and thought “what would Trogly make of this” and here you are...they get some interesting stuff in and the estimates are reasonable but often placed to entice... some of the items went for big money, but there were some deals...The auction carries on tomorrow with amps and pedals... They hold these fairly regularly.

I could have bought the moto Strat and Twin Reverb set back in the 2000s for cheap. I wasn't into Strats yet at that point. Too bad as I could have afforded it painlessly.

Burns is a British Guitar maker that was founded in 1959. Unless you're a fan of Hank Marvin it's unlikely you'll have seen one. (The most popular guitar manufacturer in England at one time. :P)

@Harry. B. Renner. jr. they are made in the far East now but back in the 50s and 60s at least they were made in the UK.
The Marvin Model apparently came about because Hank Marvin of The Shadows was the first person to be able to import a fender into the UK but the frets were in the wrong place, making it unplayable.
He approached Burns to make a replacement because he'd just spent a fortune importing a defective instrument and needed a guitar that wouldn't be subject to import taxes, which were many times greater than they are now owing to there actually being manufacturing and industrial jobs in the UK back then.

There was a Japanese brand called Burns in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but they weren’t affiliated with the British Burns company. I believe the Japanese ones were intended only for release in Japan.

*Converting old Gretsches isn't such a bad idea. Because the type of celluloid binding they used it can rot and do all kinds of damage to the finish and the rest of the guitar, especially if you leave it in it's case where you trap the gases it emits over time you're gonna have a real bad time.*

Just watched some of the Auction. Who's buying these Guitars? There are some mad prices, particularly when you consider that you have to add fees and VAT, then you have to get it shipped. Maybe people get swept up in the event.

I was surprised you didn't know anything about the Burns. They were big when Cliff Richards and the Shadows had a string of hits. Brian May's homemade guitar used the PU's. At that time the Brits still had a very heavy tax on import U.S. guitars. They lifted in the mid 60's and Fender was the first to jump in and that killed Burns.

Vat is included in all prices in the uk

    • @PaulCooksStuff
      @PaulCooksStuff 3 роки тому

Not necessarily. Some auctioneers choose to sell VAT Inclusive (the bid/hammer price already includes VAT). Some don't. Some lots are zero rated. It's a minefield decoding the various lot codes.
The text he was reading from was actually about vat being applied to the 20% buyers premium. "The Buyer shall pay to the Auctioneer a premium of 20% of the hammer price together with VAT on such premium". Effectively a 24% buyers premium.
Though vat is all moot for non-EU buyers. They can claim it back when they export it.
