I was working on the White Penguin episode today when I got this message from a concerned buyer that was trying to sell a guitar that he bought from me 3 years ago! It Ruffled my feathers a bit that someone at a guitar store would think this Florentine is a fake so I thought I would use today's episode to raise awareness of the original Bantam/Florentine series. They're real!

Hey Trogly, what was the reason they were saying it was a fake? Everything I see is as it should be. I've seen alot of fakes running through the pawnshops where I live. The one sign that they all have had, if the owner won't let you go through and pick it apart is the serial number. The serial number is always stamped after the finish has been applied, where Gibson finishes over the serial. I'm not sure if you have come across that, but I've seen atleast 10 that had the serial done that way.

Austin is definitely one of the guys in this world whom you can trust. You can just tell by the way he does things that he's not out for a quick buck. He has a real inner-passion for guitars. You can tell he'd feel like he were betraying himself if he were to even consider a foray into douchebaggery.

Bingo. I worked in a shop that had a genuine 60's Les Paul used; people came in on a daily basis asking to check it out. The guitar was immediately impressive; I know this because they spent a VERY long time playing it. I would watch them jam on it for upwards of 15-30 minutes. They would then ask the price (well over a thousand), look closely at the headstock or the bridge or any other usually suspect part, and say--without any further careful inspection--"I can tell it's a fake....look at this, that, and the other. I'll give you $300 (or thereabout)." Sorry asshole; the owner of the shop was a Gibson expert and wouldn't have paid what he did with decades of knowledge to end up being duped by a fake.....

I think that the F holes and the recent Chibson invasion are genuinely throwing inexperienced people off. Questioning is one thing, dictating something is fake is another. There is zero indication that Patrick's experience is what happened in this situation. I am also surprised that the owner never researched his rare Gibson to know everything about the model and variations. If it were mine, I would be able to rebut ANY claims of fakery just like Trogly did here.

@@patrickkeenan6331 The best part about that is that it's illegal to knowingly sell counterfeit products. If anyone says "this is fake, let me buy it for this much," then the correct response is either "it's not fake; full price" or "if it's counterfeit, I can't sell it at all... Bye!" lol

I have one just like that, the red laquer is brighter. I took it to 2 different GC's and had their "experts" tell me it was a Chinese POS. So I took it to Gruhns in Nashville and had a complete evaluation and appraisal. They took it apart, checked everything and it was 100% legit... (so later I bought another one in "light old barn gray", gorgeous wood grains). So I went in with one guitar and left with 3 and a melted credit card. You cant be a collector and go to Gruhns without buying something. I have GAS.

Hey Austin, I don't think I ever told you but I was told that 2 of the ones you sold me were fakes. Well, technically it was 3 lol. That 87 SG special, That Fireburst and that 2016 blue studio. The Studio the guy thought it was fake because of the Epiphone pups that the previous own had taped into the quick connects lol. The Fireburst a guy thought it was fake because I kept saying Flame burst instead of fire burst so he couldn't find that model name. But the 87 SG I have to admit I started to really wonder about lol. First, it has a one piece maple neck, those were supposed to have 3 piece necks, secondly, the output jack is on the side not on the top, ALL 87 SG specials have the output on the top (front/face) and finally because the bridge pup is wired to the fore most volume control. I found out that some of the SG's are indeed wired that way, plus someone had put Schecter pups in it so they could have moved the bridge volume pot to where it is at. The one piece neck, The guitar was marked as a second and the neck could very well be why plus I did find others who had similar guitars, Les Paul's, ES styles and other SG's all were marked as seconds and all were supposed to have either one piece necks but had multi piece or supposed to have multi-piece and yet it had a single piece. But the output jack on the side, that was the real killer and the one that made me almost contact you lol. I must have spent about a week trying to find just one example of mid 80's SG special like mine but I could not find it. Then as I was looking back through the original pictures you sent me before I bought it, I noticed something odd. The output jack in all of the photos was on the top!! How in the heck did it get to the side then? Yeah, then my brain fart came to an end and I remembered that I was the one who did that!! Lol. I had installed a kill switch where the output jack was at and I installed a new jack in the side. But when I went to repaint it white I decided to do away with the kill switch since I found I rarely used it. But, if I put the jack back there I would now have a hole on the side. Knowing that a hole on the front is easier to fill and patch I opted to fill in the out put jack factory home and just leave the jack on the side. Plus I prefer it there anyway, Oh it sucks to get old plus be on pain medication 24/7, you tend to forget things lol.

The Guitar Hangar is a shop in Brookfield owned by my friend Rick Tedesco. I used to teach there. I've known Rick for 25 years. He deals in a LOT of rare and collectible pieces. I played the very first prototype of the Carlos Santana PRS there around 2001? 2002? And by Carlos Santana prototype, I mean, this was the very first guitar Paul built for Carlos! After building the guitar, he built a second one and THAT is the one he presented to Carlos. Paul verified the authenticity of the guitar and provided Rick a COA for the it. Rick also owned Mick Ronson's original Les Paul with the Sanded face and his Marshall Major. He sold them to a very wealthy Mick Ronson fan a few years ago. He still owns Mick's personal vinyl collection and pedals. You should definitely check out the Guitar Hangar.

Obviously I'm not seeing it in person so I can't say for sure, but I have done comparisons in person, and something I've noticed is that fakes typically do not go to the trouble to do the binding that way (with the binding raise at the frets so that the ends of the frets are made of binding) so that does suggest is it likely a Gibson.

I’ve been playing guitar since 1974, played music professionally for over thirty years and I now have a small guitar store myself. There’s SO many good fakes out there, everyone has PTSD in the buying guitars department, as well as me having it! I bought a nice 2006 Classic Les Paul the other day and looked it over hard before I paid for it. I bought a Chibson Yngwie Strat a few months ago because it was so close, no one has known it was a Fugazi until I told them. It’s not for sale, it’s just one of mine but if the guy hadn’t told me, I probably wouldn’t have figured it out right away. This one would be a pretty odd one to fake, it’s a little too rare I think. I'm so happy that theres a Gibson Expert out here that can verify this mess of fakes nowadays. It's scary for someone like me who knows no way near enough to separate them! My next purchase is gonna be a Paul Custom and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pay you to find a proper one!!!🤙🇺🇸🙏🎶🤘

I've heard similar stories of people asking a Rolex dealer about their vintage watch and getting told it's fake because the dealer has no clue about anything apart from their current models. The person then goes back to the small shop they bought it from saying that it's a fake watch, not realising it's actually a genuine one.

Always appreciate your reviews. Mr.T. But having no money I purchased three Chinese Gibson knockoffs for under a grand: Beautifully made and sounding Creme SG Les Paul Custom; A Green Les Paul Custom w/Quilted Top; and just arrived: A '61 ES-5 Switchmaster w/ Cherry Sunburst, Bigsby, and Abalone trim through the body, neck and headstock. And all three w/gold hardware. Playing each through my white Marshall half-stack and T.C. Electronics G-Major, I'm happy on a budget bro!

Ohh those custom florientine's...😍😍😍...the '97 and '98 ('96??) I was so close to buying one about a year ago on ebay. It was black, the listing was posted for a long time. There were only like 5 (kinda blurry) pictures on the listing. You may have even seen the post yourself. I think it was around $ 3k. My concern was because of how long the guitar was for sale. It seemed to me that there was something i didnt know because that guitar should have sold quick at that price and in as good of condition that it appeared to be in.

Not only is it real but it’s worth a buck. I can send you photos of 2 that I’ve owned as well as the Gibson sales brochures. The really rare ones are the ones called Bantam, the name they got before being told not to use it by Ludwig. They made them as standards with AMAZING quilts, customs, even diamond holes. After 1995/96 they kept making the custom version until 2000ish.

That’s crazy. You are definitely respected for your extraordinary knowledge of Gibson’s so I think it comes down to the consignment shop’s error or lack of knowledge. As other posters have said, I would also believe the owner would know more regarding their instruments details to be confident of what they had. What is the name of that consignment shop? Probably not a shop I want to do business with. 😀 Great post!

LOL I remember that guitar and thinking I would love to purchase it. I love the LPC Florentines, but find them to be a bit over priced. How would ANYONE accuse you of selling a fake Gibson? That in and of itself is funny, IMHO. They probably have no idea of the guitar. I have seen guitar shops where their experts are idiots, and that sounds like what has happened here. Anyway, during the video, I saw the 2014 LPC Florentine w/Natural Flamed Maple in Belgium and am putting an offer on it. Thanks for the video.

Yep! I’m somewhat new to your channel and I can say from your videos and your information you are legit! I never thought of buying any guitar from the internet because of fear of getting ripped off, so I have always bought my guitars from dealers like GC but after following your channel for some time and know that you sell guitars I would not hesitate to buy one from you. I hope your name gets clear and that you get an apology, at the very least.
    Cheers!

I try to live by these three words every day, learned as a native NYC guy: TRUST, BUT VERIFY...
To me, these three simple words can help to reduce or eliminate misunderstandings and identify outright fraudulent behavior. I also tell everyone I interact with that they should do the same with me and whatever I say or offer.
Of course, dealing with a fire-breathing mythical dragon is the exception to that rule. I've never met Sir Trogly, but if there was ever a guy who oozes honesty and veracity, its Austin. Unless of course Austin happens to be a world class actor. :)
As they say in the military....confidence is HIGH in Trogly.

What do you think could happen to come somebody took a Heritage Kalamazoo model and attached a neck with the Gibson brand and inlay on it?
I can't honestly be sure that I would purchase one of these, as unique and off the beaten path as they are. If I wanted a semi hollow body Les Paul instead of a b ES, I would go for one of the standard issue ones that came out a decade later.

I bought one of these in wine red just like that one in 2008. I believe it was also a 1996. I took it to GC to get it appraised, there 3 young gentlemen working all in their 20s. Obviously metal heads. They told me it was a fake because Gibson never made an F hole Les Paul. I knew better, I've been collecting Gibsons since 1972. I left thinking after seeing the tattoos and hair I understood, now if it had been a 80s Japanese Kramer they probably would have a vast knowledge of every screw on it. I went to 2 other local shops and heard the same thing. So I made a 5 hour drive to Gruhn's Guitars for a written appraisal. (This is very dangerous because everytime I go to Gruhn's I need help carrying stuff to the car.) Yes, it is 100% original, verified by surgery. It is true most people have not heard of these or ever seen one. Fantastic guitar, great jazz tones. Unfortunately it has a thick, fat, rounded neck which I cant play. I keep it because it's just too pretty to let go.

I remember these. Didn't make them very long. 3-4 years, I think. I only remember one famous guy who played them, and that was Paul Jackson, Jr. This seems like a case of 2 people going into a shop and seeing something they've never seen or heard of, so it must be fake. I admin a couple big guitar pages on Facebook, and the 'experts' always pop out of the woodwork with their 'fake' comments, but no justification why they think it's 'fake', or it's something that could've been changed or replaced over the last 45 years. Anyway, cool piece. Hope you got the confusion straightened out.

I own a 2014 Epiphone Les Paul Florentine and it's more than worth it. It resonates amazingly and has more low-end than your standard Les Paul. I think having a Gibson model would be great but I don't think it's worth $4,000 compared to the $650 I paid for my Guitar.
