Hey there! I'm the creator of Liminal Gallery and I absolutely loved this video. Kinda sad that you only saw Liminal Gallery 1 as it's the first map I've ever made so it's a bit generic and dated. You still made it really interesting with your commentary though so that's great! If you want to see something more up to date in quality, check out my 2 other maps: Liminal Gallery 2 and Melonade especially. I'd love to hear your comments on those. Great video overall, I really hope your channel grows big!

19:16 i think this is an in joke about a youtuber called 'the librarian' who does gmod explorations. the large amounts of watermelon and weird metal shape appeared in a map they covered in the past and then that map maker started putting them in other maps to screw with the librarian

In my personal opinion, modern liminal spaces are defined by them appearing to be man-made but has illogical architecture, as if it's made by something that knows what a human is, but doesn't understand human architecture, or architecture at all.

I think a good way to think of it is like, if an alien didn’t understand the difference between natural structures and man made structures, but still tried to create a false representation of the world. So most of the false man made structures would look right, kind of, if a bit off, but you’d occasionally get utter nonsense where the architecture makes no sense because if architecture was naturally occurring that would just happen sometimes.

here's some of my take that ive had over the years on how to define a liminal space:
the "transition" can also be literal and physical instead of just through time. hallways, doorways, spaces where you wait, etc. these are often pretty universally agreed on to be liminal to some degree. spaces that give off the vibe that you are not intended to stay here for very long, that you're not supposed to live here, that you arent supposed to be thinking of this space as a place for humans to do normal human activities in like cooking or sleeping or spending time enjoying life in. or spaces that do the opposite, that look like someone 100% should be living here and doing those things but for whatever reason there is nobody here and that the space gives off some kind of vibe that it would be wrong in some way to do so. its hard to describe that last bit, though.
another way ive looked at it is that a liminal space is a place where it appears like there _should_ be humans and/or that it was _made_ for humans, but there are none there. or, made for or should have something tangentially related to humans. this covers much more abstract spaces like infinite pool rooms or staircases or something along those lines. spaces that dont have very obvious human accommodations and have things that are clearly meant for some specific purposes but that without further context of people being there feel like it doesnt make sense... not sure if that really makes sense itself, i hope it does lol

To add to what you said about unreadable text in dreams, not gonna lie, I made up some fake brands in one of mine. It was about me on a road trip, visiting a gas station to grab food (was reminiscing about going to Yellowstone, and since I love camping, it was great to finally go)
I remember the layout was really cramped, like they had a few more shelves extra that they wanted to squeeze in to fit extra stock. I don't dream much recently, but I'll honestly try to write down whatever ones I get and whatever I do remember because I really think making my own dream map would be sick

Also, I'm not Own Doing but something that has helped me dream more, and remember my dreams more, is just writing them down as soon as I wake up. I think your brain tries to get rid of the memories as quickly as possible but if you write them down they can stick a lot longer.

The old windows background with the grassy hill. I remember looking at it sometimes and thinking "Where are we? Why is the grass so green and the sky so blue? What is out there?". I felt as though i have been there a million times but don't know when and where it was. Great stuff. You deserve more than 1.5 thousand subscribers.
You're very personal and you keep me feeling like i'm sat in the room with you while you describe what you're playing in the game.
You hold a parasocial relationship well.
And as you said, you do your due dilligance. I asked " is this guy really going to measure if this little pool has a lifetime supply of water in it?" And seeing the gallon jugs being placed across every measurable angle of it just solidified "yep. He plays games the way i WANT to play games"
I don't think a video sells the idea of making your own liminal space the way this one does. You really highlight the personal nature of the creator in each map and you do a much better job than other "creepy youtube guys".
No offence to them but their format doesn't hit the vibe as hard as yours does even if they vibe so well with it. "The librarian" comes to mind. It's almost all live voiceover and unedited so it drags on with minuites of silence without any context which just sends me into the realisation that i want to download and play the map without the youtuber.
Unlike that, you make it a joy to welcome your inclusion between me and the map.
Make more of these, i haven't seen any of your other content but you're aware enough of the appeal to independantly made videos in general that anything you make will have enough consideration to be worth watching.
And feel free to do this stuff live i just might not watch it.

I can't speak for everyone, but the algorithm dropped me in here and I gotta say, I would absolutely watch an entire series exploring and deconstructing these sorts of maps. It's always cool to take a look into someone's thoughts or feelings by looking at what they create.
The little segment of survival in such an open, yet secluded place, makes for a wonderful thought experiment, and can help function as a mindfulness exercise; getting the brain to focus on things it usually takes for granted. Overall, wonderful video with wonderful vibes. I look forward to seeing what you do from here!

I explored the liminal gallery 1 map in vr and when I went to the really dark room that had deep water I literally closed the door to that room, laid on the floor and had a little bit of a breakdown. Love the map. (and the video)

I absolutely loved this video! This is the kind of thing I've been waiting a long time to see, and it was rejuvenating to watch. Strange and surreal maps like these simply enamor me, and I love to explore them myself as well.
Liminal Gallery was a map I absolutely adored when I explored it myself long ago, and you managed to make it interesting to revisit despite the map being the same as ever. The thought experiment you had with living in the map is exactly the kind of thing I find myself thinking about in hypothetical scenarios all the time, and you segued it perfectly into the bit at the end of the segment.
It's a wonderful thing to see someone share a similar passion for this sort of surreal user-made content and Gmod maps in particular, and your commentary remained both entertaining and thought-provoking throughout. It's also nice to see someone else appreciate the medium as a genuine art.
As for my last thoughts, I just wanted to mention that the map you showcased that you'd made when you were 12 was fascinating to me, and I loved seeing the somewhat crude construction of it with its blocky walls and open ceiling. It almost reminds me in a way of the beauty certain older games have where their limitations become mesmerizing parts of their artstyle much later on, though I suppose Gmod is getting to the point where it could probably claim that title itself.
Great video! Thanks for making it, and I'll absolutely watch more if you do choose to make them.

Just wanted to let you know that I loved the water math segment, the thought experiment of living there was a great addition, it’s exactly the kind of thing I’d think about playing a map like this.

Frankly, I'm all about odd videos like this. There's always just some maps that maintain this aura of a secreted away space that feels reminiscent of old dead games and servers that you just don't know if anyone's actually seen it in years or not. There's also an equally secretive audience who are all for seeking that vibe. Sometimes, it's not even the intentionally odd maps that nail this vibe. I remember this one underground town filled with neon lights, and tight spaces everywhere. By all means, it was a normal map, but you had to take a slow tram to get to the main part of the town, which was basically the only open part of it.

I always loved spending time just exploring these odd maps as a kid. Time seems to stop and stretch like an ocean rather than a depleting resource when exploring these vast, empty spaces. Even non-liminal maps in Garry's Mod always piqued my curiosity. I remember spending hours upon hours posing ragdolls, placing props, and crafting stories of my own using nothing but these empty spaces. I really liked that analogy you made about paintings and visual media compared to now, where we can now step inside of, and modify the painting, whereas our ancestors had to make do with admiring the visuals. I can think of so many maps I explored in my own time, going out of bounds on HL2 and CS:S maps I would play, gm_bigcity, any of the maps Fishke made, any variation of RP_(insert), but I remember rp_bangclaw was my favorite since by the time I was around, there were maybe only two or three servers still using it, it seemed more mysterious that the map was falling out of favor. Keep making these kinds of exploration-philosophocomedy esque videos, or don't if you don't want to. Great video man

I especially loved the "could I live in this map?" bit! 😊 Your way of Gmod map exploration has a different style/feel compared to most others (even The Librarian) that I've seen and it's great! 10/10

I'd love to see more of these. As a kid I played a lot of gmod. There was a point though when we had our internet shut off for a year or so (lived in the country so it wasn't all that necessary) and I had downloaded a buuuuunch of mods prior so I'd have something to play with. Rolling through empty Gmod maps sorta became a hang out spot for me. Also learned a lot of Gmod ins and outs during that time too.

  • @anaccount7032

Discrete Time Signal Processing is actually how we turn random noisy and chaotic data into something that is easier to understand by having computers record a data each instant (called sampling) and check that data for frequencies or statistics.
An example of where you would use this is if you want to clean up somebody's voices by turning a time domain signal into a frequency domain signal and making sure all the annoying background noises are cut, and then have the signal reconstructed, making it sound cleaner.
That's as best as I can explain it to somebody without overcomplicating it.

Absolutely love seeing both the exploration of these weird maps/places but I gotta say the more personal spin you give to it, to imagine if you could survive in these places and try to empathize with the person the dreamscape belongs to hit too close to home for this is the kind of things Id get derailed thinking about when I explore these places.
Please I'd love to see more videos in these styles of you have any interest in making more cause the charm it had is very rare to find!
And if im allowed to suggest any map for a potential future video or simply for you to explore on your own, Grandfather Galley was a very bizarre find that really left an impression

I think GMod's so filled at liminal spaces on the workshop is because it's mostly HL2 assets.
Nearly half of the game's chapters take place in City 17 which is by definition a liminal space. The combine's slowly decreasing the population and the city's falling to ruin or outright being destroyed, there's an eeriness to a city being so scarce of people even before the rebellion.
