- The Magnavox Odyssey was offered for sale in 1972, pre-packed with a collection of "cartridges" that were little more than primitive circuit boards and colorful screen overlays so you could see what you were supposed to be playing. This dinosaur is almost unrecognizable as a video game, but is still a critical milestone in gaming. Both as the first home console, and because one of its games is the very first video tennis game, pre-dating Atari's 'Pong' by several months.
In this video, the Nerd explores one of the remaining pristine-condition Odysseys, with his irritation tempered by respect for history. The game still sucks, though.

I'm 25, and my dad is 51.
My dad was 8 going on 9 years old when this console was released. He dusted off the Odyssey from the attic and played it with a friend when he was about 14, and he said it was outdated crap even back then.
This is our great-grandparent's electronic board game console.

imagine back then how hard it was to program the games for this.
You didn't even program games for it, per se. it existed before the days of ROM cartridges, so the different games were just circuit boards that changed the wiring to make different objects appear on-screen and to change how it registers input.
@@loanethetrash31 The Odyssey didn't even have a CPU. Everything was hard wired using very simple circuits. The "cartridges" just opened and closed different lines to change what the shapes on screen could do.
As someone with a little bit of experience in programming, one can only imagine.
It might be a time when C was deemed as a super-abstract-level language.

A bit of a disappointment, Odyssey promised big open sandbox-style worlds, and and intriging Capture mechanic. This looks like it came from the early Eighties or late Seventies. It dosen't even plug into the Switch, I mean come on.
Horrible game. Really was expecting something great. Graphics are horrible and gameplay is simple.
Also you can't buy costumes, your only stuck with being a white dot.

He reviewd big rigs, that was like two years after the release of the original xbox, heck he even looked at a gamecube game which came out the same generation as the original xbox., even if it was brief.
When he started the N64 was only 8 years old, the Xbox is more than 15 years old now. Over time, he'll slowly do more and more games from the 6th Gen and on.

This is probably one of my favorite episodes. It's amazing to see how games went from two lines and a projection sheet on the screen to hi-def graphics. Also, its weird to see the Nerd in a good mood. Well, good for his standards.

I guess I'll comment on this since it's Odyssey related. But we recently lost a legend. The gaming community has lost the Father of Gaming Ralph Baer. Truly a pioneer. Who knows if we would even be here if gaming weren't around.

Ironically enough, the box part of the console itself has aged pretty well, it looks relatively modern.
Confirmed: kids from the 70's had way more imagination, patience and determination than us.

Doom 2016 is made completely in the style of the original games. When they tried to make Doom 3 more slow paced like a survival horror, it wasn't nearly as good.

John Hahn I know that. That's not quite a "reset" button, but moreso a menu button, which is still great. I just meant why would someone want a button that directly resets the game instantly.
The only console example I can think of is that AtGames Sega Genesis console (that you can find in Wal-Mart or Walgreens) that has the reset button in the center of the controller _above_ the start button. That's pretty stupid design.
Basically, reset buttons are bad. Menu buttons are good.

To be fair. Who cares? Knowing the names or locations of states, counties, providences, doesnt really matter.
To me, intelligence is more about your ability to problem solve, not knowing useless information about where a fucking state is. Knowing the location of one state cannot be applied to anything else. However, understanding basic molecular rules, math, etc, can answer a lot of questions.

so fun fact, the odyssey's gun is actually the origin of the "point the Zapper at a light bulb to cheat" myth for the NES. The Zapper's patten includes a way to prevent you from doing so, also the original Zapper in Japan was literally a single action army even had a holster. The gaming historian has a great video on it.

I think this was a pretty good attemt back then, looking at all the other crap we have gotten 10-20 years later than this. This had originality and imagination, while still being extremely limited on technology and resources

When you used the gun you had to turn the lights off, it basically could sense if it was aimed towards a light, after a while you learned you could point it at any light source such as a nearby lamp that was on and impress your friends by never missing a shot. It came with 4 game overlays.
