Nope, the reason why you can turn the ceilings and floors off in "Gloom" is just because that's the most complicated bit to render. Think "Wolfenstein" versus "Doom" - Wolfenstein didn't have any texture mapping on the ceilings and floors. But, by the release of Doom, iD had nailed how to make that work fast enough. Basically, the walls are dead simple to render. They're always vertical, so the engine renders them in vertical strips and just scales those vertical strips to different heights. That was John Carmack's clever little trick - kind of a programming "cheat" - to make things look like true 3D, even though, in truth, these are all still 2D pixel copying techniques. The floors and ceilings, though, are a different story. Because you can rotate to any arbitrary angle and then there's perspective on top of that to account for, calculating the floors and ceilings is complicated. In fact, it's basically doing proper 3D texture mapping in software. That's why "Wolfenstein" didn't have any texture mapping on the floors and ceilings. It was too complicated - would have taken up too much CPU time to calculate and keep up a decent frame rate. By "DOOM", though, he'd both nailed a few optimisations to speed it all up and, well, PCs were also getting faster - in the battle of PC clone manufacturers to constantly outdo each other -and were now fast enough that you could reasonably expect people to have, say, a 33MHz CPU or whatever, which was now fast enough to do it all at a good frame rate. That's why the option is there. It's that they blatantly copied DOOM - and did get the floors and ceilings working - but they're no John Carmack, so it's like "okay, we've got the floors and ceilings thing in there... just about... but, to be honest, if you want the frame rate to stay steady, then turn them off, as this machine is desperately struggling to only barely manage it". The super-zoomed-in perspective of the game? The super-tight FOV? That's another cheat hack to give the CPU less to do, hoping to keep the frame rates up. Basically, they wanted to copy DOOM, then realised that John Carmack's a technical wizard, who was casting programming magic to make these things work at all, and they couldn't really pull it off on the CD32. Not properly. Not fast enough for a good frame rate. So they killed the FOV to speed it up and, even then, felt that it wasn't really good enough - so added the "remove floors and ceilings" option, as that's the thing killing the frame rates so badly.

You forgot to mention battletoads for the amiga cd32 (doesn't deserve to be capitalized) where the graphics were ripped from the NES game without music. Need I say more?
Problem with the CD32 isn't just that it was a bad console. It was actually a pretty capable machine, being basically an A1200 without a keyboard and floppy drive. Its biggest problems were that Commodore went bust less than a year after launch, and that it had virtually no third-party game publisher support thanks to that fact. And most of its hardware flaws came down to Commodore's lack of resources that late in the game. The paint can thing is also probably just because the poor thing is as old as I am. Point is, Commodore didn't collapse because the CD32 was bad, the CD32 was bad because Commodore's collapse was already inevitable by the time the console launched. It was doomed from the start. If you want to see some REAL unmitigated shit from Commodore, check out the story behind the Amiga 600.
I take one look at any of the games, especially Gloom, and think no this is not a capable machine. Any SNES game with an FX chip wipes the floor with this.
I honestly regard the ban on sales in the US pending payment of copyrights for previous crap as a GOOD thing. Had this pile of drudge hit the US market, the recovery from the Crash would have been delayed or outright aborted. There but for the grace of God...

Bad games, some move-licensed: Dangerous Streets, Oscar, Surf Ninjas,
Nonfunctional peripherals: Atari Jaguar CD
I like how James at the video store immediately starts rattling off trivia about Surf Ninjas
I had one as a kid and I liked kang fu. I knew as soon as I saw you had it you were going to rage about the loading bug. My dad raged about it for ages and called the store and they told him to read the manual. Yes, my dad was in his 30s and bought kang fu... For himself! Legend!
How did you reacted to the game over screen?

I grew up on these videos even from screw attack days and every single episode you never fail to impress. The quality of your videos has been the finest of all video game UA-camrs even to this day. I just cannot believe we are at 162 episodes of the Nerd. Thank you for putting up with all the shitty games. The world needs someone to experience them for us and no one is more qualified than you. I really hope you never stop creating such quality content.
Remember the time Commodore released a C64 without a keyboard where the pack-in game required a keyboard to even start?
Ah, the Commodore 64 Games System. That was a huge mistake.
I love the fact that all the unsold units were disassembled, put in "breadbin" cases and resold (with C64GS' game cartridge and hideous Cheetah Annihilator joystick) as Commodore 64G in Europe.
Hmm, it's weird too. x32. CD tray. Colored buttons. This thing is every bit of the Nintendo-Sony Playstation collab prototype, xept way earlier. Only thing it was missing was its true purpose, good games, the thing that launched the ps1 and Ps2 into space compared to Nintendo and Xbox.
Wow. Their decision-making process must have been fascinating! To have been a fly on the wall.
@@uriituw It s so fucking rare though.I doubt James bought one
The "adapting my swearing to British" gag at 2:36 is completely hilarious lol, one of my favourite recent ones from AVGN!
I loved that one. Haven't heard it done before. I forget how creative James is until I watch these things.
As being English I can confirm that we say these things on a daily basis
WANK! WANK!
this is such a good bit.

I like to imagine James and the Nerd are 2 separate personalities in the same body, so when they're talking in phone call he had to change clothes and go back and forth between the two rooms.
This literally happens in one of the last Board James episodes haha

Pretty nostalgic, indeed.
I laughed so hard with nearly all of the newest episode's punch lines; I really like this classic AVGN episode style :)

I was thinking that too
This is classic AVGN. I feel he's at his best when he's reviewing consoles because it allows him to talk about many different things at a quicker pace.
Honestly I wouldn't mind if he had a video (or several) dedicated to smaller shitty games that, on their own, wouldn't be worthy of a video that all came together to form one large video. Perhaps with a theme attaching them? Just my two cents.
TheMortalMan that's exactly what he did in some of his Christmas videos, so you are absolutely right
"It looks kinda like Doc and Marty if they were crossbred with the Minions."
Thanks for that image Nerd, now it will never leave when i'm sleeping.
Actually that could be in an episode of Rick and Morty.
He was spot on with that analogy. They do look exactly like that.
I love the Nerd's pronounciation of Ryu. James confirmed it was inspired by the original Japanese version of SF2 The Animated Movie
After some research, I have discovered that the buttons have names. the i32 button is "shuffle", the circle arrow is "repeat", arrow pointing down is "select", and the square is "stop" it's for the cd player command. otherwise the game manuals referred to the buttons by color (sorry colorblind folks)

He probably didnt have it
@@kumatheronin8961 yeah, that makes sense.
@Lassi Kinnunen no it isnt all are A600 isnt more sought after at all same amount of accels for them all
1000% right man. it is rather comedy, not fair review. I like cd32 and CDTV very much, it was popular in europe.
I honestly regard the ban on sales in the US pending payment of copyrights for previous crap as a GOOD thing. Had this pile of drudge hit the US market, the recovery from the Crash would have been delayed or outright aborted.
