Absolutely agree with the importance of showing rather than telling, and how music can create an emotional connection. Recently, I've been trying to apply these in my vlogs on my other channel, plus I've been using boost app social, which gives me great content ideas in seconds. And I've seen great result!
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my UA-cam channel 9 months ago about self development. Now I have 1,312 subs and > 1,000 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
I stopped vlogging with my wife, everything had to be so perfect (my fault) “I needed a plan “ But what watching this video I realize I was so wrong , I missed the fun part of the process. Thanks for this video And happy for you vlogging Channel 🙏🙏🙏
I am the same. I use to vlog before and it was just natural, as I started to get more serious on UA-cam and learning more about video, I started overthink everything and stopped enjoying the process. Mumu wife in the other hand, she is free, she would do the most natural vlog while I am overthinking, I think that bring a balance if you look at it in that way. Anyways, this video and you comment helped me to remember why I like vlog in the first place! Document it!
“We’re not making a short film here” 💯💯💯 Thanks for the tips! I just started experimenting with vlogs and I’ve done professional video productions for my day job and I must say, Vlogging is not as easy as it looks. It’s a different beast!
Omg this is spot on. The whole “going from A to B full length film” is what almost every beginner does. Until we learn how overkill that is it’s just a thing we have to go through. 😂
Am a student nurse and been toying with the idea to start a vlog channel, then i thought, my life is boring. But after watching your video, i feel somehow confident. am gonna try it start tomorrow and am gonna mention you there for helping me come out of this shell!!!!Lots of love
OMG!! "Stop telling your viewer what you're going to do"...This...I needed to hear this...I feel that this will make things so much easier for me!!! Thank you for this advice!
I would say that there IS an argument in favour of verbally announcing what you are doing or going to do in a vlog. I personally enjoy being told what’s coming up when watching vlogs myself because it sets me off wondering how it will turn out and keeps me hooked to find out. Also, many of my viewers have told me they tend to listen to vlogs whilst doing their housework, rather than watching as it keeps them company plus I have several who have told me they are partially sighted. I also have people watching who are learning English, so for them it’s useful to hear a description of what’s happening as well as visual cues to help understand the meaning. X
Yeah I think it depends on what you announce! But when you announce “I am going to the supermarket” followed by a shot of you saying “just came from the supermarket” there is nothing interesting about it. It’s better to show you’re going to the supermarket instead of just talking about it. regarding the partially sighted comment: I didn’t think of that and I think you made a very fair remark.
@@lilafromyoutube oh yeah - I do both! Though sometimes you can’t film things, like today when I explained about a nurse practitioner coming to our house to train me to inject my daughter, and then updating the camera about what happened and how it went afterwards. Those sorts of things are essential to a life story but can’t be filmed. I think my audience are used to the near constant barrage of audio clues about what’s happening so my audience has grown around that, but the more visual stuff could go down better for different audiences. I think some people take in more visually and others take in more audibly. Thanks, Lila. X
These are all lessons I had to learn the hard way with vlogging. REALLY wish this video was around when I first started lol. It's probably the most helpful "how to vlog" video I've seen.
Honestly you are right about that vlogs are all done in the edit because when I was filming my trip to Taiwan 2 days ago I kept thinking that this entire vlog would be boring but once I started editing I just couldn't wait to finish the vlog and post it!!
Excellent advice. I think you're totally right that we feel like we need to be talking to the camera to keep it interesting, but that ends up making it more awkward.
Haha yeah. I made that mistake a lot of the times and I have to remind myself sometimes “don’t talk to the camera for the sake of talking to the camera - just do your thing!” :)
Best video I’ve ever watched about how to vlog. That’s makes me feel more excited about it and don’t to worry that much about what I have to say in front of the camera. Thank you much Lila… you and Peter should make more videos together you both are such an inspiration
I just started vlogging this year, and it honestly changed my life. My first (traveling to Malaysia) vlog even got 1k views in the first month! It's so much work, but honestly it feels like legacy building. So so glad I started this format!
Had to come back. So I shot a vlog about 9 days ago and haven’t had the motivation to edit it because I felt like it was too much and all over the place. But, this video motivated me to go back and knock out the edit. I got about 45 minutes of drone and handheld shots down to a 7 minute solid to the point video. Just wanted to say your content is helpful 👍🏽
It is so difficult to cut favorite clips, emotional attachments gets involved. But definitely you need to let it go and yes, less is more! Thanks for the tips Lila 💙
This is gold! Thank you so much! I filmed my whole trip and felt like I was lost on how to edit it and this just helped me so much on how to! So happy I came across your channel!! 🙏🏽

Exactly!!!!! 💯 The t-shirt are just... perfect! Lol 2 way of thinking! Overthinking, is my biggest problem... but Peter had said that in his vlog, to just film and then in the edit, make a story out of it. That was a total game changer for me, on the way I saw vlogs. Agreed with everything you said. Bambi is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to music so I’m so happy I got to include her. There’s way more I might share in another video, who knows :) btw searchable content is like 20-30% on UA-cam - the rest is all recommended content which could be vlogs. But it’s definitely harder to make your vlogs pop because people basically need to be invested in your story or you as a person. Or both haha.
Great video Lila! Great tips! I keep doing the same thing ‘what I’m about to do’ thing - everytime I watch it back, I think damn I’ve just ruined the start of that shot!
Learning to use bits and pieces, sample, reverse, add reverb and delay, repeat, fade in and out of songs and sound effects really helped me step up my story telling. Using a low pass to duck the music when talking is a game changer, it literally tells the viewer "hey something is about to happen".
Thanks so much! Editing is really where it happens. Of course you need to have the footage but even a bad day can be turned into a great story when editing :)
GREAT ADVICE !!!!! Literally was just thinking to start changing things up for my channel to make my vlogs more soothinig and this was just what I needed ! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!
Wholly smokes Lila, this is one of the most helpful and encouraging videos I've seen on this topic. I may actually start now! It's only been six years of procrastinating...

Great tips Lila, it always fun being future you wondering why past you thought you needed to record this. But good news is can always use the other footage in the future if needed.

I wonder if you would still be entertained if I showed the entire cut, because I bet it would be a total of 1-2 minutes of me showing every step of me getting to Sweden
Hey Lila! I just wanted to say I really enjoyed this video and it's really helped me because i'm always worried people will be bored, and i'm always turning my camera on and off! so I'm gonna take your advice - will do a half and half thank you!!!

This was super helpful. Team Documenting for 2022🥳 Planning was something I felt I had to do aka what I thought was the "right" way. My content and ideas kept getting lost in perfection and I was not putting anything out. This video was super helpful (and liberating! Lol). Thanks for a great video 💕

@@lilafromyoutube hahaha that is also necessary sometimes especially after the holidays! It seemed like used the audio from one clip and said the same thing in the video. Kind of like a dubbed sync. It was cool to see

I went to Istanbul this summer and I was vloging there. Thru the edit I had so much footage that I really like to show it all through the whole song. After this video I saw my mistake and why didn’t had much attention from the viewers. Thanks Lila.
@@lilafromyoutube Well, the idea was to try to recreate radio shows from the 1920s. So far, the background sound effects work amazingly well. I'm just not all that good of a voice actor. 😁
It’s something we all do and have to stop doing haha. Sometimes it’s helpful to provide additional context but usually we dont need to spell it out like that
So this was awesome. I stumbled on you on Twitter and this was the first video I’ve watched of yours… it couldn’t have come at a better time in my journey. I’ve been wanting to start but have had these exact holdups keeping me from really going for it. Thanks so much for this video. ❤
Wow, thank you so much for this helpful video! Exactly what I needed to hear after I filmed my very first vlog ever this weekend and am now going to edit it. I briefly skimmed through all the clips I filmed and I also instantly noticed the problem of overexplaining things. I got so annoyed at myself for saying "Alright, so now that we have done X, we are going to head to Y, so let's go!" between every activity 😂So I told myself I would just show myself actually doing the things and if there was ever something that would require a little explanation, I could still just cut in a 4 second B Roll clip with a voiceover giving some brief info. But I totally agree that as beginners we tend to overestimate how much explanation people need for us driving somewhere, hiking somewhere, going into a cave, having lunch - people can tell from what they see 😂Also, I 100% agree that the story comes together while editing. As a photographer of many years I always tell people that nobody can see what's outside the image frame but I still have a hard time applying this to video as well. Not everything that happened or that has been filmed has to be in the vlog - actually most of the footage won't be. Compose a sequence of clips that makes sense and add the right music and it all looks so different from the weird individual clips you originally filmed.
Haha even some of the seasoned vloggers do that! I’ve seen plenty of big vloggers saying “ok I’m back in my car”… which we can see but thanks for pointing it out haha 😂 totally agree with everything else you said
@@lilafromyoutube Haha oh God, so guilty of that 🙈 I have about 5 clips from last weekend in or in front of my car saying exactly that 🙄😂😂😂 but hey, I guess I learned that one early, that's a good thing 😂
Definitely need to work on over explaining and adding too much of the in transit footage. Great tips, I’m excited to film again! And shot out to the man Peter!
Really helpful video, I feel like this would have been the perfect opportunity to pull some people over to your vlog channel. So much truth here on not shooting everything because then it’s a bear to watch and / or edit it all and also editing down to let the story tell itself.
This was honestly the most straight forward and helpful advice for anyone new to UA-cam like myself. I ended up closing all the other tabs I had looking up 'how to vlog' after watching. Also, great example for brand integrations, it was so nicely done! Oh, is there a hybrid plan/document team? I think I may be on that one 😂
Hey Lila, thank you super much for creating this awesome video. I am getting started into vlogging by looking into HOW to do it first and this gave me one of the key components of what I need to begin my awesome journey! Thank you! 😊
Loved this. Good tips and will definitely help. Saw your buddy Peter on Peter Mckinnons vlog. Then checked some of Peter's videos and the algorithm put you on my screen. Cool how that works.. and now I'm a sub.. Looking forward to more.

I’d love to go to Istanbul some day. I hope you’ll be travelling again soon so you can use these tips 😊
I love Epidemic! It's awesome for a plethora of content types. I use a lot of sound effects when reading my audiobook as well as the music.
Thats such a cool way to do audiobooks!
@@lilafromyoutube Well, the idea was to try to recreate radio shows from the 1920s. So far, the background sound effects work amazingly well. I'm just not all that good of a voice actor. 😁
Happy New Year Lila!
Thank you so much, you too!!
Helpful hearing the “you don’t have to show every detail between A and B” part. 👌🏼
🙏🏻
What a great video! I especially liked the tip not to tell people what we are doing while vlogging.
It’s something we all do and have to stop doing haha. Sometimes it’s helpful to provide additional context but usually we dont need to spell it out like that
Great video. Superb advice and tips
So this was awesome. I stumbled on you on Twitter and this was the first video I’ve watched of yours… it couldn’t have come at a better time in my journey. I’ve been wanting to start but have had these exact holdups keeping me from really going for it. Thanks so much for this video. ❤
I’m sure you’re going to crush it!
Hahaha 😂 to be fair, I haven’t vlogged in a while so i may make the same mistake again - good thing we can edit it out 😂
Learning from you now I got the job in video editing thanks lila love from India ❤️
I literally just started vlogging! This video is really helpful! Ima sub!
This is surprisingly reassuring, love it 🔥
Definitely need to work on over explaining and adding too much of the in transit footage. Great tips, I’m excited to film again! And shot out to the man Peter!
I have learnt a lot from your videos love it thanks Lila for sharing them
thank you for your suggestions its helpful for me .
Came here from Peter’s video and just got hooked to Lila’s channel! 🤩👌🏽
🙌🏻🙌🏻 thanks for coming over
This is such a great and simple explanation. Thanks for always inspiring me, Lila!
❤️❤️❤️
Really helpful video, I feel like this would have been the perfect opportunity to pull some people over to your vlog channel.
So much truth here on not shooting everything because then it’s a bear to watch and / or edit it all and also editing down to let the story tell itself.
Haha that’s true. It’s great to shoot everything if you want options though
oooh lila doing a vlogging tut and that editing issssss so fressshhhh! really enjoyed this video!!!
Thanks Justin!!
@@lilafromyoutube also i am mindblown that you and PG are friends! This is even more cool now! 😂
Hahaha
Hi Lila, This was very helpful! THX!
This was honestly the most straight forward and helpful advice for anyone new to UA-cam like myself. I ended up closing all the other tabs I had looking up 'how to vlog' after watching. Also, great example for brand integrations, it was so nicely done! Oh, is there a hybrid plan/document team? I think I may be on that one 😂
hahahaha I'll allow it - there's a hybrid team now!
@@lilafromyoutube perfect! 😂
I love your last name btw. I am a big sims fan haha
@@lilafromyoutube haha thank you! I'm a big fan of the sims too! I play the game and irl 😂
Hey Lila, thank you super much for creating this awesome video. I am getting started into vlogging by looking into HOW to do it first and this gave me one of the key components of what I need to begin my awesome journey! Thank you! 😊
Cool tips like the fact that less is more - you star and merry Christmas x
Happy holidays to you too hieth!
@@lilafromyoutube Take care and stay safe !
Loved this. Good tips and will definitely help. Saw your buddy Peter on Peter Mckinnons vlog. Then checked some of Peter's videos and the algorithm put you on my screen. Cool how that works.. and now I'm a sub.. Looking forward to more.
Love how this came together
Thanks :)
Lately, I'm really interested in vlogging. This helps a lot. Thank you!
