When I see the sharpness of your face/body and quality of your video and many others on UA-cam I really think that I must have the crapiest cell phone on earth😂😅🤣😮🤪🥶😭😭😭😭😭 how am I EVER supposed to get good videos?!?!?! Also regarding background...uffff...I guess I'm just not the social media person/camera queen AT ALL!!!!☠️🫡...I wish I could do it better...
Hi I'm just getting started, as in just getting my camera, the whole nine yards. What lighting set up (lower price) would you recommend for a beginner?
@@rray98ring light with some kind of rgb back lighting
This was easily one of the most useful, practical, and informative videos I've ever watched about lighting a room!! Thank you so much for making this!!
😵💫
Great stuff, Lila! I learned the 3-point "Rembrandt" setup in film school as well. But fashion photographers and cinematographers have been using the "butterfly" setup for ages and it was a real eye-opener when I learned about that. Watch old romantic films from the 30s and 40s. The famous Marlene Deitrich portrait the was copied by Queen is an exagerad version of the butterfly setup. I've done a 'tiny' amount of fashion photography and straight-on light just above the camera is always a great choice - looks great on everybody. I also add a small bounce underneath to put a little light under the chin and neck. That's not generally practical for the average YT setup at a desk, though. Your setup looks great!
Sounds like you have a lot of experience to share ❤
Gizmo!
One of the most insightful videos you’ll find on lighting. I love the way you break it down in the most practical way. Hope to see more videos like this one. ❤️
thank you - planning on it! any requests?
Was expecting another dragged out lighting tutorial video, but this was great!
I liked how it was mostly focused on the tutorial but was well balanced with showing your personality, might model this video style 😊
Wow - that was sooo simple. I've been trying everything to get lighting just right. Just shot my vid for this week following your info here and I love it! Thank you!!!
That’s amazing Jeff! I’m so happy to hear that
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my UA-cam channel 8 months ago about self development. Now I have 1,140 subs and > 900 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
That’s awesome. Congrats!
Just reading this now. That’s amazing! Congrats!
@@ltldxy71 Whoever you are, I don't know you personally but I can say that you're one of the non-judgmental and open-minded people who is not fixated on tangible or external factors in order to learn from someone like me. Just because someone doesn't have a piece of paper as a credential, doesn't mean that person is not entitled to share personal experiences with the hope & intention to inspire others. Keep up with whatever it is that you're doing to improve mankind or improving your life even to a slight degree each day. This is just one part of a bigger puzzle for creating my UA-cam channel about holistic health. I literally could have died back when I was 14 years old due to major depression but here I am right now replying to you, a UA-camr, who's full of fulfillment and dedication to help others to be a better version of themselves. I ain't better than anyone else but my old self. That's all that really makes this UA-cam thing more meaningful and enjoyable. Thanks so much for your support! I am hoping that you can join me with this endless personal development journey! :)
So many helpful tips here, thank you so much Lila! It was great to see your setup behind the scenes, I love it when UA-camrs show their workflows or setups, it gives a lot of ideas and is also a great starting point. 😃
You are so welcome! so glad it was helpful
@@lilafromyoutube Also, I forgot to say Gizmo. 😆

I think I've watched this video at least 5 times. I can't stop myself from making my backgrounds too busy, but now I just watch the video because it's a good video.
Obsessed with the all black walls lol!
A Pro tip on glasses and reflections: Something we'll do often times is just tilt the glasses down slightly. So the backside is not sitting on your ears exactly but just slightly above, while the front is tilted down. This gets rid of all light reflection usually :)
Thanks for sharing this tip! 👏🏻 p.s. I need more black walls
@@lilafromyoutube what can i do to make my ring light softer? maybe place a light fabric on it to cover the ring and soften the light?
@@hnia0 you need space between the light source and the diffusion, so placing the fabric directly on the ring won't do. As an option you can improvise a frame for the fabric to be attached to (with a hole in the fabric for the lens to go through if that's what your setup requires), then a way to rig this frame some distance in front on the ring (it can be a separate stand or some extension allowing to attach to the same stand the light ring is on or the camera tripod). The amount of diffusion will depend on the thickness of the fabric and the distance from the light. Diffusing will always take away some of the intensity of your light source, you might want to take that into account. Experiment.

I love the colours you chose for the background Lila! I'm slowly adding more lighting options to my kit, and have been saving up to get something like the 120d II or 100d since those should be powerful enough for both photo and video projects.
My first Aputure light was the MC RGBWW LED. That tiny light really opened up a bunch of possibilities while in college and added pops of colour in an otherwise drab background. I'd love to grow my kit with more Aputure lights and those tube lights have been in my shopping cart for a long time. 🥰 I also love how you spoke with other female UA-camrs about lighting and included tips for glasses wearers (Mine always seem to catch reflections 😱).
Keep up the amazing work and thank you for being such an inspiring person Lila!
the 120D MII is pretty expensive so maybe the amaran 200d could be one to check out too!
Really enjoyed this simple and informative video. Really nicely shot too. I've developed my inventory fairly well but curious about the small amaran tube in the video.
Stunning tutorial. Short, precise and straight to the point. Thank you, will put some of those Tipps for sure to work on my videos
🙌🏻 have fun!
Loved it! Let me give you another video idea, “Lighting colors that work together”
You said its great to have a contrasting color but not like everyone knows the color chart so you could make us great combinations that works.
Kudos!
Great idea; thanks :)
@@lilafromyoutube still looking forward to it after a month
Gizmo!
I just love the way you explain videomaking. It's just plain, fast, clear and fun. Great job, waiting for the comparison - YES :)
Thank you!!!
This is a fantastic video. I came for lighting tips and ended up writing down 6 aspects of the video I thought were amazing for engagement. One of the most productive videos I've watched, thank you!
Thank you so much!!

@@Dmogul i hope you did all the things to enter the giveaway ;) if you lived closeby you could have the ikea lamp, i've had it for so long i can use something new haha!
u used all the lights in the world while the video title says Just 3 lights
She did use just 3.
The other light is for the next content hahaha
anyone know what colour the wall paint ??
@@user-rv6mi7mz7s she mentioned it was just black.
It's just basic three point lighting. She just didn't really give you a straightforward message. Also she didn't ID the back lights as backlight. So three point lighting... You have a key to the right. A fill light that is softer to the left. An a backlight to give you that cinematic highlight, Wich I think she over does with where she placed her backlight
Hi Lila!! Can I ask the link for the bulb charging base and cover? I really love it!!!! 🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍
Simple and effective. Great tutorial 👌 I love how you show the space "behind the scenes"
Glad you liked it! It was certainly underwhelming wasn’t it
@@lilafromyoutube hahah that’s the beauty of this all!
Statistically, Rembrandt mainly used "Rembrandt light" on men. With women he hardly ever used it, opting for Loop or Butterfly lighting instead.
Then you going go to spilt when you move in a video 😂
That’s not statistical.
This is fantastic! Thank you! Exactly the set up that I have in my studio at home. Definitely going to be trying these out asap!!! Thank you!
🙌🏻 good luck
I have complete jacked skin and when the light was at a higher angle like many suggest I was getting bummed out by the results. Your little tip of moving the light down from a higher angle to a more direct one made all the difference and helped dramatically. Thank you for that.
I’m so glad to hear the adjustment helped 🙌🏻
Really enjoying the black walls in the studio! Mind sharing what shade of black you chose to go with? It looks like it has a slight blue tint. I would also love to know if you decided to do your ceilings as well. Thanks Lila!
It’s actually anthracite, not black! But it looks black on camera. It’s a rental so my ceilings are still white as we don’t want to go through the trouble of painting it white again 😂
Gizmo, you rock Lila thank you for the inspiration and excellent tips. I hope to try some different lighting soon.
You’re so welcome! I’m glad to hear this
This is awesome. Short and too the point without being needlessly technical…thank you!
You’re welcome! 🙏🏻
I genuinely love the lighting in all your videos and also their crispiness!
..so finally I get to know the secret behind them! 🙃
thank you!!
I learned so much from this video 💜 Thanks Lila for posting 💚 Genius idea with the "gizmo" Easter egg 🤣🤣👍🏼👍🏼

Most helpful lighting video I've ever watched. It's the one thing I've struggled most with throughout all my years on UA-cam - definitely going to impliment these tips.
Let me know how it goes 😊
@@lilafromyoutube I will make a video when I get it all figured out (might be a while, lol...I'm kind of chaotic)
Very detailed video with easily accessible equipment, thank you Lila

Perfect! what lights are you using?
@@lilafromyoutube none! Haha! I don’t have any 😂
Oh shit 😂 well I hope some of my reviews will help with your first purchase if you’re thinking of buying a light.
Gizmo!
Ive always wanted a tube light and can never quite justify the cost of the higher end ones. They do give a sweet look, Love your setup!
they're awesome! good luck
gizmo!
haha what a smooth plug it was, but yeah the tube lights look great and also the glasses tip was very helpful.
Thanks for the commentary on moving the lighting head-on. I was having the problem of "extra character accents" on my face suddenly appearing with the lighting "ideal 45 degrees". I moved my lights head on and I feel like it works best for me in my set-up so I can concentrate on content. Not on facial features which suddenly have become movie stars on their own. Overall, this video is a wonderful change from the same old info we see everywhere. I do presentations often and I have been able to take better control of the lighting in various situations and make I'll make suggestions based on tips from this video. Thank you !
found you searching for a lighting video, I rarely leave comments, but you slayed this video. Nice work girl and thank you. Very helpfful.

Thanks so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying the wallpaper Robert!
I appreciated how you didn't *once* mention Amazon as a source at all. Refreshing!

Thank you for doing this video. It helps a lot, especially with the color contrast information!
I’m so glad :)
Thank you so much. I am definitely going to try these tips. So helpful. Does wall color make a considerable difference?
That was very helpful!! Some neat tips in this video! And the best tip i think was “stop making excuses about your equipment, start with your smart phone and progress from there”, which is what I am about to do for the moment, and I’m holding on to your video for future reference!
Gizmo! Thanks for everything you're doing, Your videos convinced me that filmmaking is much more fun and easier than I was thinking before, keep going! 🙂
it can be daunting but it's as easy as you want it to be
@@lilafromyoutube Well said, this could also work as a printed poster to keep creators on track just in case of harder days 😉
Thank you for such perfect explanation. Very useful.
Really good tips on this one, need to get me some of those light bars
"Is this professional? No." Oh my.
I've been on sets with pros lighting an interior of a house from outside (it was raining outside, but we needed a warm, mid-afternoon lighting feel inside) and while they paid all the attention necessary to safety, then to achieving the onscreen light, outside the tarps all gaff taped together were not a concern. I remember being out there with the two people doing the lighting and thinking, "well, this will be interesting" but they absolutely nailed the desired result.
I learned that "professional" looking setups or mounts don't matter. What matters is the onscreen product, and yours looks very professional. :)
You provide so much value in your videos ! Thank you so much
Thanks so much for watching!!
agreed on butterfly vs rembrandt! I also prefer that the light be mostly in front of me, rather than at 45 degrees. I think it's so much more flattering!
same! no shadows please haha

Originally came here while looking for lighting tips to help a friend. The quality of this video (and all your others) led to me jumping into video and the Sony world. About to purchase an fx3 next week, along with aputure lights. You're amazing lila
oh wow congrats on getting the fx3! Just FYI I film everything with my a7SIII but you can’t go wrong with the fx3! Enjoy 🫶🏻
@Lila yea after learning they have the same sensor and internals it was a no brainer. I'll still be able to take amazing pics too. But leaning towards video content so cinema camera won my heart over.
Looking forward to watching more of your videos to learn all I can
Haha that’s fair!! You’re not gonna regret it ☺️ hope you’ll enjoy the lights too

Also, I haven’t even considered the 45 degree angle rule when it comes blemishes and things like that. Definitely something I’ll start keeping in mind!
it's all personal preference at the end of the day :)

For the longest time I believed that natural light is the best light, but I'm learning more and more that knowing when to use what type of light is really the best way to go!
natural light is very helpful and affordable, but I have had many issues with clouds appearing in front of the sun which results in very inconsistent lighting. I'm glad this video helped!

I love that you gave us permission to use the key light straight in front instead of at an angle. I was really not wanting to use it at an angle. lol.
This set up is very simple. In fact I like this kind of set up because of how little space I have in my room for shooting.
I'll try your tips and see what I am able to come up with. Thank you Lila for your help.
Oh and Gizmo! (:
Hi Lila~ I stumbled upon your video! I like how you make this video easy to understand, and I feel rather inspired. I haven't actually started yet, as I'm trying to sort my room out. I'm thinking of working at the ┏ corner of my room, with me talking directly to the wall, and have space behind me just like in your video. I wonder how the face lighting setup would be in this situation, and what products would you recommend for a complete beginner with limited budget? :3
Thank You Lila for this video. You are such a gem.

This video was very helpful as i am trying to get better with lighting thank you soo much i love your channel!
aw thanks john!
I’m so happy I came across your channel. I’ve been watching all the men creators talk about lighting but your point about lighting women is valid (to me). I like the 45 degree thing but it’s something a little more flattering with the head on lights.
I’m glad to hear that! And I totally agree :) I tried the whole cinematic 45 degree thing but I really don’t like it on my face.
Great work Lila!
