    Episode 54 of Love At First Scent
    This was a UA-cam Live broadcast streamed on Sunday 15 December 2019. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
    In this special episode, I went through some of the fragrances on the first part of my list of the best perfumes of the decade 2010-19. You can read the list here: persolaise.com...
    In the video, we sniffed:
    - Frederic Malle Portrait Of A Lady (at the 9:30 minute mark)
    - Ulrich Lang Apsu (at the 18:30 minute mark)
    - Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee (at the 35:30 minute mark)
    - Chanel Boy (at the 42:30 minute mark)
    - Etat Libre D’Orange The Afternoon Of A Faun (at the 50:45 minute mark)
    -
    It feels odd writing a blotter update for these, but here goes:
    - Portrait Of A Lady is just the most perfect incense-rose in its final stages, with musks holding the two notes in place for hours.
    - Apsu manages to remain optimistic and serene... and it even retains some pepperiness.
    - Trayee is now warm and enveloping: supple, creamy milk notes, cut through with spices and colourful florals.
    - Boy’s emphasis is on the herbs: an interesting bitterness contrasting with the musks. Admirably elegant.
    - The Faun is a dense forest - mosses, herbs, resins - enticing you to keep delving further in...
    [Samples of the Ulrich Lang, Neela Vermeire Creations and Chanel provided by the respective brands; the remaining two are from my personal collection.]

    POAL is, to my mind, best described simply as an act of sublime perfumery. My No1 scent, was mesmerised from first sniff, no more need be said.....

    This is quite an undertaking, Persolaise, and I'm glad it's you and not me choosing! Malle's Portrait of a Lady is one of my favorites and I adore Trayee and Galop too. I would have to include the unusual Vero Parfumo Naja (which of course brings Onda to mind for a place on the list.) Enjoying your critiques here and on your blog and looking forward to the next sections!

      Onda is pre-2010, so doesn’t qualify. But Naja is eligible... 😉

    I've been looking for a "florist shop" fragrance for ten years, apsu sounds like it could transport that flair I have in mind!
    Great selection of scents, Candy came as a bit of a surprise though. Definitely need to reinvestigate after reading about it on your blog.
    My personal favourite of the 2010s is actually a flanker - Shalimar parfum initial by Guerlain.

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  4 роки тому +1

      I wouldn’t say Apsu spells ‘florist’ but do check it out anyway.
      As for Candy, I like the fact that it’s a sugar bomb with brains.
      I seem to remember being quite taken with that Shalimar flanker, but it didn’t last long, did it?
      Thanks very much for watching.

      @@Persolaise I ordered a sample of Apsu due to your review. I really enjoy it, it evokes leaves and nature so perfectly. This is probably how people experienced Vent Vert in the 1940s.

    Clearly I'm quite late to the game here, but had to ask ~ Regarding POAL; Why not Une Rose? I don't question your taste of even your choice, but rather just literally wondering what is it that makes POAL so superior? I have not yet been able to try the Maille line! (Yes, I know, coming out from under my rock breifly!) Thank you for your channel, I always find your perfume conversations fascinating.

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  4 роки тому +1

      Well, when you write a comment as friendly as that, you can question absolutely anything you like 😊
      Why POAL and not Une Rose?
      That’s a very fair question, and I suppose much of the answer comes down to personal taste. I just prefer Portrait to Une Rose.
      But to try to give you something more substantial...
      Une Rose is closer to soliflore territory, and so maybe it’s a bit more predictable, a bit less surprising. It is a superb perfume, no doubt about it. But Portrait is so dramatic, so moving, so distinctive. It’s in a league of its own, I feel.
