    Episode 152 of Love At First Scent
    This was a UA-cam Live broadcast streamed on Wednesday 6th January 2021. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
    In this episode I reviewed the new Exclusif from Chanel, Le Lion De Chanel, composed by Olivier Polge.
    ***
    Apologies for the less-than-perfect audio in this broadcast. I can only think that this was caused by some issue at UA-cam’s end.

    Here's the blotter update:
    - I will definitely explore my many thoughts on this scent at greater depth in a blog post (to which I'll provide a link here), but for now, I'll say that the drydown remains in that heavenly territory somewhere between Shalimar and Cuir De Russie; the Coromandel vibe is perhaps less marked towards the end. The suede-like feel and the vanilla-labdanum remain in tandem with each other, projecting both ferocity and velvety comfort. Interestingly, the pine-like, lemony facet of the citrus accord remains noticeable too, and recalls Shalimar Eau Legere. The big question is: gorgeous though it may be, does Le Lion say anything new? And that's what I'll attempt to answer over on Persolaise.com in due course.
    Here you go: a link to my blog post with more thoughts on the scent -- persolaise.com/2021/01/chanel...

      Le Lion is excellent but would say that Coromandel is probably just a little more subtle, mass appealing and easier to wear. Le Lion is definitely very bold, strong and galbanum heavy - a statement maker and not for the faint hearted!

    I'm late to this. I am aware of some of the Exclusif line, but don't own any. The new Comete release made me go sniffing again. I decided to do a skin test of this one. I was impressed and as the day wore on, I was all things moved, hooked and captivated.... as I went to sleep, it was still in my wrist 12 hours later. There is a degree of unparalleled comfort and serenity only matched by inner strength that I find in this.
    My first les exclusif is coming.
    I thought it may have been coromandel or bel respiro, but they will have to wait!

    Finally got my nose on Le Lion. First Class. Shalimar is one of my all-time favorites. I also have the Ted Lapidus Pour Homme EDT that Ramsey, Rich Mitch love. Powerful. Perhaps it's a crude fragrance to some, but I think Lapidus has something there...maybe blended with Lalique Homme (the lion bottle), which will ligthen it up towards the citrus, could prove interesting, maintaining the vintage/timelessness. I'm also thinking of Guerlain Santal Royal, which also has that animalistic note.
    I'm sure no one needs my input but for me Le Lion is the perfection of the masculine Shalimar, and I have to have it. After that, I shud be guud...but now that I have a taste for Zaharoff...

Wearing Le Lion made me bust out my EdT version Shalimar, which pales in comparison to Le Lion. The dry down of this fragrance is my favorite part because it gets sweeter and drier. Love your initial thoughts! Can't wait for the blog post for more ...
    I've had a decant for a couple of months, and I haven't really gotten on with it at all. I wasn't reminded of CdR (need to keep an eye out for that birch!), but got the shalimar connection. I respect shalimar, but don't actually enjoy it. (L'Heure Bleue is "my" classic Guerlain). It seems to me that Chanel pushed their own boundaries-which even if I don't like the result-is refreshing in the current perfume landscape of safe releases (be it following trends OR staying in a lane, like Chanel usually does).

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  3 роки тому +3

      Kevin, thanks for writing. I think it was Sylvaine Delacourte who said that you're either a Shalimar person or a L'Heure Bleue person, so if you're the latter, I can understand why Le Lion might not appeal to you.

    • @kevinshiraldi8110
      @kevinshiraldi8110 3 роки тому +2

      @@Persolaise Yes! It also probably explains why I love Boy & Misia, so I still overall love Olivier's direction for Les Exclusifs. :-)
      I'm sure this isn't the case ... but if Olivier were looking to classic Guerlain for inspiration, you can see some L'Heure Bleue in Misia (powdery iris/violet), some Jicky in Boy (lavender fougere), and now some Shalimar in Le Lion (amber/citrus/incense).
      Next we need his take on a Mitsouko chypre! :-)

Definitely not a safe blind buy because these exclusif Chanel collection are expensive that it is best to try it on skin first before making a commitment to purchase the full bottle. After watching this I ordered a decant, just got it and wow, Chanel is really copying Guerlain if you ask me. I wear vintage Shalimar, Jicky and Mitsouko, have for years, (and I've got back ups)and this smelled so much like vintage Jicky and also Shalimar EDC vintage it was unnerving. I guess copying is supposedly a form of flattery, but really Chanel? The dry down is different of course. If people love this one, then that means the originals of those fragrances should make a comeback as something "new" and "modern", lol, it's about time I guess. So long "old lady" moniker! We are back in style!

    Recently picked up a 4 ml. bottle of Le Lion and have to say I'm very disappointed. People speak of an initial burst of lemon. On me I get an initial burst of insect repellant. It improves over time, but i've concluded that to wear le lion, you need to apply it two hours before anyone else will be exposed to it. For years my signature scent was Lagerfeld's K.L. Alas the bozos discontinued it, and I've been searching for a replacement ever since. Le Lion isn't it.

      Thanks :-)
      I really do rely on all of you to let me know about technical issues.
      This is one of the main drawbacks of being live, I guess. I don't have a producer in the studio to help me identify and deal with problems.

    You wrote in the blog:"perhaps their greatest success so far in the 21st century".. Does this mean that you put Le Lion in front of Coromandel and Boy 🙂?

    • @Persolaise

      Sotir, this is a very fair question. Personally, I would say that, yes, I like it more than Boy, and I place it in the same league as Coromandel.

    Like it but not impressed by the Lion from Chanel, not as impressed as I was with the tiger from Kenzo.
    To me same with you, it smells more of Guerlain-ish as Chanel. Not disappointed just felt like it easily being part of old vibe from Guerlain.
    Maybe... I was having my hope too high for something as a new classic vibe that can fit that Chanel image to my nose, as Ciur de Russie or Coromandel

    • @Persolaise

      This is a valid point: do we expect a brand to keep pushing in new directions, or do we consider it to be okay to revisit (and to reinterpret) old structures?

    I didn't know that we are supposed to shy away from using the word oriental. Does it sound offensive too nowadays?

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  3 роки тому +1

      Well, ‘offensive’ is perhaps over-stating it, although maybe some would find it offensive.
      I think it’s seen as being problematic, and also not terribly helpful. A descriptor like ‘warm’ or ‘ambery’ might be more apt.
      It’s certainly being seen as more and more of an issue in the industry.
