The issue really is deeper than this though which is what Sam and others usually dont really talk about. On this basis alone it is true. However it only answers one side of the duality i.e logic and reason. On the other side is its opposite which is largely the area of study that Jung found himself in with dreams. We all understand that dreaming is a necessary thing to stop from becoming insane. However, if we all lived by nothing but logic and reason and stripped belief from our lives then it seems straight forward to me that emptiness is created where the dreams begin to diminish. Definitely act in logical ways that fit reality but do not repress the underlying emotion which explains the reason why you should act logical in the first place. The two are the same opposite. There is an issue when people say their dreams are real things but also if you dont have dreams how do you strive for anything in the first place? Its a loop that no one sees or takes time to understand. Harris has explained it before in vague terms as 'Spirituality' which is a poor catch all term for 'we do not know what this feeling is'. God has been changed to mean leader power etc but is this really true? When Dawkins explains that the evidence of the knowing your wife loves you is not the same as knowing god does I agree with this. However there is evidence which is similar to a degree that something exists which creates the dreams. What is this? What does it really mean when people say 'I believe in x'? What is this feeling of god or spirituality that everyone feels? Do we claim it be nothing but mental delusion and repress this? He specifically points to faith as evil, that is faith in things that are not based on evidence, and that religion itself is neither evil nor good.

The issue at hand is sin and God’s nature of being just. Sin brings suffering (the pleasure is short term, and the suffering is long term-on earth and in hell forever). God brings Righteousness (may have short term suffering followed by long term pleasure- on earth and in Heaven). If you love yourself repent of your sins (lying, hatred, unforgiveness, sexual sins, taking the Lord’s Name in vain, stealing, dishonouring your parents etc) & believe in Jesus for forgiveness of sins. (Jesus died on the Cross as a sacrifice and defeated death by rising from the dead)

@@Cmustang22 not sure if you're arguing for or against religions here - but I think a difference is that scientists say they could show us the complete evidence if we want, while religions say they can't. I think you're right that we don't know either's claims for sure, but I think I'd find someone a lot more convincing who says they can show me proof than someone who says they can't. Think about it - a detective who is notoriously good at his job tells you he's got loads of evidence for a murder, and is willing to show you. A random man tells you he witnessed it and it was actually suicide, and the victim overdosed on a drug - when the evidence literally shows stab-wounds. Sorry if this isn't a great analogy, and I agree that we shouldn't just take things people say for granted, but I think it's that if I wanted to see evidence for scientific theories, I think I could probably look them up, and if I'm still doubtful, actually go see the evidence in person. Whereas as far as I know, if I ask a religious person to show me evidence for their religion's validity, I don't think they'd be able to, and I think that's because there isn't any.

First you will for sure find flat earthers and counspiracists. Second, many scientific certainties are been refuted over time, and many fundamental theories as about time and space and relativity are still debated actually. My argument about life laws and science as from each one's perspective is that for each fact that a person intuitivally considers a law (like that if i take a glass of water it will not turn into elephant by itself, that things will not start appearing and desapearing bythemself instantly, randomly and constantly, that i have to believe and trust at least a human on life like my parents when i m baby) this laws are in fact only statistical guesses and not 100% garanteed facts. Because you can for each of these ask the question "what if not".Science is defined by some philosophers in epistimology as: "The FAITH that future will behave like the past". I cannot live on life if i start suspecting any of these "laws" which are in reality only guesses. What i want to point is that this "evidence" is not that "perfect certainty". Many philosophers and even youtube videos exposes this if you want search about it.

By intition every human is trying to find meanings in life, but why not about the true questions of life (where i m from, how created, where will i go after). I’ve been a muslim my whole life, But since childhood, I’ve always questioned things that did not make sense to me. I was forced not to question the religion otherwise I was sinning. The more I grew up, the more I started rejecting the idea of religion. the world is better without it.

I was born and raised in a christian household, my father is a 5th generation pastor coming from a long lineage of chistrian ministry. Since birth I have been exposed to Christian teaching, Sunday services and lived in a home culture of fundamental christian values and teaching and I would like to share my experience in reply to the discussion regarding "Being raised catholic is worse than being sexually abused". My family have done nothing but expose me to what they believe and my father in particular has always offered open discussion regarding my philosophical and religious difficulties. I've been loved, supported and most importantly left to my own devices in order to figure out my "walk with god" as my dad would put it. From my experience, many people in similar positions to me in the Christian community experience nothing but love and support from their parents. I describe myself as agnostic and to this day still massively appreciate the lucky position I have in being able to learn so much and question so many difficult philosophical questions/debate so much with my father. Were not all brainwashed, nor are we victims. We're lucky enough to have stable parental figures who display hard work, respect to piers and good ethics through their faith, to compare that to sexual assualt is nothing short of a "God delusion" in itself. Dawkins is a smart man but sometimes he says stupid things.

This was a good discussion, and i genuinely feel fullfilled by the outcome, as rarely ever is usually is. Mehdi was a very good host, but i was born a Muslim amd i know almost exactly how he thinks. Dr Richard Dawkins did an amazing job, even though he was under pressure. I know its old now, the video but nevertheless it was great.
It makes perfect sense because the entire atheist opinion on God is formulated using empiricism, which is the argument that knowledge/fact can only be stemmed from experimental science but rarely anything using experimental science can be proven to a degree of certainty therefore at very most an atheist could say it is very unlikely that the miracle occurred which in itself is a flawed conclusion since the original belief of religion and miracles is innate and metaphysical so cannot be proven or argued by worldly science anyway. In simple terms, it’s like trying to measure your height in kilograms.
Technically you can't prove that he didn't fly to heaven, but that's not how the burden of proof works. The inability to disprove something does not justify belief in it. I could just as well say that fairies and leprechauns exist, since nobody can disprove it and the scientific method cannot evaluate the existence of such beings. It's true that science probably can't answer certain questions, but that does not give anyone the right to say "Science cannot prove/disprove/evaluate certain things, therefore I can believe in [Insert irrational belief here]" Arguments like those are arguments from ignorance: "We don't know/can never understand certain things, therefore [Insert irrational belief] is true."

As a child, I was told that if i miss a prayer in a day, I would have to spend a few years in hell burning. I spent the next few days calculating my hell time based on my age and how many times i had missed praying (or actually prayed) in those years till then. It was bad. My parents who are believers discarded my calculations and said not to worry too much. I realized that people dont really believe in such things. They are religious just because they were born that way. But I chose to reject my religion due to many other such fears and chose to live with truth and common sense.
You enter Jannah through Allahs mercy, Allah is a merciful Lord and although we are to do the best we can to please Allah, He has made us imperfect creatures, meaning the best thing for us is to seek forgiveness from Allah for our shortcomings and believe that Allahs mercy is so great that he will forgive us when we make sincere intentions. Thats seems to be mandatory with religion. It's the minimum requirement for the believer to be unshakable in their ignorance and hostile to anything that threatens it. I have friends both muslim and christian alike you get really defensive. Obstinacy is bliss. "it is far easier to fool a man, than to convince him he's been fooled", it helps a great deal if you were not fooled in the first place. The issue really is deeper than this though which is what Sam and others usually dont really talk about. On this basis alone it is true. However it only answers one side of the duality i.e logic and reason. On the other side is its opposite which is largely the area of study that Jung found himself in with dreams. We all understand that dreaming is a necessary thing to stop from becoming insane. However, if we all lived by nothing but logic and reason and stripped belief from our lives then it seems straight forward to me that emptiness is created where the dreams begin to diminish. Definitely act in logical ways that fit reality but do not repress the underlying emotion which explains the reason why you should act logical in the first place. The two are the same opposite. There is an issue when people say their dreams are real things but also if you dont have dreams how do you strive for anything in the first place? Its a loop that no one sees or takes time to understand. Harris has explained it before in vague terms as 'Spirituality' which is a poor catch all term for 'we do not know what this feeling is'. God has been changed to mean leader power etc but is this really true? When Dawkins explains that the evidence of the knowing your wife loves you is not the same as knowing god does I agree with this. However there is evidence which is similar to a degree that something exists which creates the dreams. What is this? What does it really mean when people say 'I believe in x'? What is this feeling of god or spirituality that everyone feels? Do we claim it be nothing but mental delusion and repress this? Or do we seriously attempt to not reduce it but to understand what it happening here without the certainty of religion?
This is a general statement applying to all as individuals. It applies to Dawkins too. So for example he may quote religion as providing some absurdities but so has atheism. In the past atheist believed that vermin just evolved from rubbish. They asserted it to be true. It was only later that atheist realised what science said that vermin thrive in rubbish but dont evolve in it. Now in the 21st century the atheist hijacked science just as religions have hijacked nationalism. Neither religion pundits nor atheists have a right to hijack anything. Richard Dawkins talks like a prophet of atheism and has a religious cult following who cant grapple witht the basic pitfalls in the atheist arguments. Firstly, looking for a created god is itself a false premise. Then for people like stephen Hawkins to say that his god is replaced by his algorithms of his maths is arrogance in the extreme, They have blind spots that shows their cult mentality. The truth is that God is not part of the cosmos just as an artist is not part of the painting. But the only way a painting knows the artist is to study itself and look at the brush strokes. Atheist largely dont see the hand of the divine artist in the brush strokes of creation, It is their blind spot that they refuse to get acknowledge.

I see this alot now and it really just ends with the furthest thing away from what is true. You cant really equate atheism with theism because they are opposites. What I mean by this is Religion usually comes from the sentiment standpoint. The why. Science usually comes the factual standpoint. The how. Neither can exist without the other and if either do then a problem is created. To know nothing is to understand the sentiment in a way that you are wise enough to use the information about the world I.E you're wise enough to see reality more clearly than others who are clouded with 'knowing'.

I used to watched Richard Dawkins as a Christian and thought he was an educated idiot. Now I'm agnostic and re-watching Richard Dawkins interviews and I now realize i was the idiot.
On a more detailed note, I actually understand Richard Dawkins when he says he does not attribute or care whether or not good done in the name of religion was in fact due to religion itself, just as the opposite should also not be said, that the evil done in the name of religion was not in fact due to religion itself. He specifically points to faith as evil, that is faith in things that are not based on evidence, and that religion itself is neither evil nor good.

You personally cannot prove every scientific theory that is existing without believing the work of other people (scientist) is true, or else you have to prove every bit of theory yourself. Like proving that the black holes exists. That other counties that you have not visited exists... And you can continue until denying every law which in other perspective is only a probabilistic faith based on your or others experience which you believe on (exept your existence maybe if you are not a simulation). In the same way you can deny the fact that some messengers were sent from god (with miracles) that people on their period had noticed and could definitely not contradict (for example jesus reviving and healing with gods will). You can as well deny the facts that it happened but in the same way as science...

I think you're right that we don't know either's claims for sure, but I think I'd find someone a lot more convincing who says they can show me proof than someone who says they can't. Think about it - a detective who is notoriously good at his job tells you he's got loads of evidence for a murder, and is willing to show you. A random man tells you he witnessed it and it was actually suicide, and the victim overdosed on a drug - when the evidence literally shows stab-wounds. Sorry if this isn't a great analogy, and I agree that we shouldn't just take things people say for granted, but I think it's that if I wanted to see evidence for scientific theories, I think I could probably look them up, and if I'm still doubtful, actually go see the evidence in person. First you will for sure find flat earthers and counspiracists. Second, many scientific certainties are been refuted over time, and many fundamental theories as about time and space and relativity are still debated actually.
My argument about life laws and science as from each one's perspective is that for each fact that a person intuitivally considers a law (like that if i take a glass of water it will not turn into elephant by itself, that things will not start appearing and desapearing bythemself instantly, randomly and constantly, that i have to believe and trust at least a human on life like my parents when i m baby) this laws are in fact only statistical guesses and not 100% garanteed facts. Because you can for each of these ask the question "what if not".Science is defined by some philosophers in epistimology as: "The FAITH that future will behave like the past". I cannot live on life if i start suspecting any of these "laws" which are in reality only guesses.
What i want to point is that this "evidence" is not that "perfect certainty". Many philosophers and even youtube videos exposes this if you want search about it.
In other terms you have to believe your guesses and on other people, have some confidence and not countinuous suspections if you want to live in life. By intition every human is trying to find meanings in life, but why not about the true questions of life (where i m from, how created, where will i go after). Just suppose you ve been told right now that you will be executed as an innocent for death penalty in one hour, won't you be frustrated trying maybe to understand what is happening to you, will you just disapear in vain injustly as innocent, no revenge no justice... let s see now what happened to people that died 10000 years ago, they lived a little bit we suppose maximum 200 years but then burried maybe 10000 years. Are you not concerned where you consciousness will be, what if your cousciousness does not disapear but stays inside your body, will you be confortable beeing in a grave for 24 hours... if you are concerned about where you will pass your next holiday or where will you take your dinner tomorrow, don't you think it is better to think where you will pass your next 100000 years ?
As i have to believe some of my guesses and believe in other people if i notice some kind of confortability and credibility by experience with them, in the same way i notice that monotheistic religions are all with the same pattern. Some human messenger claims that we have to believe in one god unique eternal creatater all-knower, that he created the world in harmony with scientific facts, that justice will be made after-life. But how can i believe that these messengers are saying something i can trust: they have miracles that are not logical, not according to my guesses, noticed by the people living with them and that did not refute them, all these people should have believed based on something they noticed. These miracles are nothing more than proof of truth of the messengers, not principles i need to believe will happen during my lifetime for normal people. In this way if i hear many monothestic religions saying similar ideas like islam relating all stories of previous messengers not denying any and claiming same ideas, i maybe think what if they are true, won't they give me in the same way an explanation about meaning of life, about my concern in after life. These religions (example of islam) just asks for believe and be good person in life, that will be ENOUGH as said in quran to save you in after life. The difference between Christianity & Islam is that we are not trying to earn our salvation by our works we are relying on the finished work on the cross and all God requires of us is to repent of our sins (change from evil to good) and believe in Jesus for salvation(your good works praying, fasting etc is an attempt to bribe the judge of the universe and God will not be bribed).

I was born and raised in a christian household, my father is a 5th generation pastor coming from a long lineage of chistrian ministry. Since birth I have been exposed to Christian teaching, Sunday services and lived in a home culture of fundamental christian values and teaching and I would like to share my experience in reply to the discussion regarding "Being raised catholic is worse than being sexually abused".
My family have done nothing but expose me to what they believe and my father in particular has always offered open discussion regarding my philosophical and religious difficulties. I've been loved, supported and most importantly left to my own devices in order to figure out my "walk with god" as my dad would put it.
From my experience, many people in similar positions to me in the Christian community experience nothing but love and support from their parents. I describe myself as agnostic and to this day still massively appreciate the lucky position I have in being able to learn so much and question so many difficult philosophical questions/debate so much with my father.
Were not all brainwashed, nor are we victims. We're lucky enough to have stable parental figures who display hard work, respect to piers and good ethics through their faith, to compare that to sexual assualt is nothing short of a "God delusion" in itself.

It makes perfect sense because the entire atheist opinion on God is formulated using empiricism, which is the argument that knowledge/fact can only be stemmed from experimental science but rarely anything using experimental science can be proven to a degree of certainty therefore at very most an atheist could say it is very unlikely that the miracle occurred which in itself is a flawed conclusion since the original belief of religion and miracles is innate and metaphysical so cannot be proven or argued by worldly science anyway. In simple terms, it’s like trying to measure your height in kilograms.
Technically you can't prove that he didn't fly to heaven, but that's not how the burden of proof works. The inability to disprove something does not justify belief in it.
I could just as well say that fairies and leprechauns exist, since nobody can disprove it and the scientific method cannot evaluate the existence of such beings.
It's true that science probably can't answer certain questions, but that does not give anyone the right to say "Science cannot prove/disprove/evaluate certain things, therefore I can believe in [Insert irrational belief here]"

The whole joke of this conversation is that the interviewer clearly disregards the good moral compass of Dawkins. Dawkins only want, as all people should want, to see people act with good morals. If you carry on sinning, then you do not love God but are selfish like the devil so you will be joined to your father in hell or repent of your sins and believe in Jesus as God so Jesus adopts you as His child and you will join Him in Heaven forever.
As a child, I was told that if i miss a prayer in a day, I would have to spend a few years in hell burning. I spent the next few days calculating my hell time based on my age and how many times i had missed praying (or actually prayed) in those years till then. It was bad. My parents who are believers discarded my calculations and said not to worry too much. I realized that people dont really believe in such things. They are religious just because they were born that way. But I chose to reject my religion due to many other such fears and chose to live with truth and common sense.
You enter Jannah through Allahs mercy, Allah is a merciful Lord and although we are to do the best we can to please Allah, He has made us imperfect creatures, meaning the best thing for us is to seek forgiveness from Allah for our shortcomings and believe that Allahs mercy is so great that he will forgive us when we make sincere intentions. Allah says O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it.
I pray Allah guides you back to the straight path and grants you better experiences in your life so that you may come to love your religion, Ameen

Surely he would send a truth, and it is our duty to investigate what that truth is, for me I think the Book of God will not have errors, human errors, because God is the Almighty He does not make mistakes, so the Bible and Torah are not even something I would consider. To me, Islam just makes sense. Pure monotheism with a book that talks about so many scientific facts 1500 years before technology was even invented. Richard thinks that science is the best representation of reality but science can't even prove itself to be the best representation of reality. Science *assumes* that laws of physics are fixed, it *assumes* that there's no supernatural but it can't prove them because science has methodological limitations. Trying to answer those questions with using science is a foolish thing. Also science doesn't lead you to truth but only gives you workable models because you can always get new observations that challenge your previous theory.
I really hope for the sake of humanity that the Islamic community can change with the times and accept new ideas and attitudes to women's rights and non Muslims, they are a huge part of my country and I can see nothing but trouble for the future.
