  • How Intermittent Fasting has helped me to lose fat, control my appetite, listen to real hunger queues, and not gain weight in periods of over-eating (for example during the Holidays.) Here are some resources to read about Intermittent Fasting (IF), pros and cons, and see if IF is right for you.
IF is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, underweight persons, or those struggling with any type of eating disorder. Please consult your physician if you have any health concerns to see if IF is right for you.

“I would definitely not recommend intermittent fasting for you unless you’re fully over [anorexia/bulimia/other eating disorders]” hi friends! Just remember that if you have ever had an eating disorder, you will almost never be fully over it. It can be a lifelong struggle and please don’t lie to yourself that intermittent fasting is okay for you because it works for people who haven’t had an ED! Always consult doctors or nutritionists before changing your eating habits!

I have had eating issues since high school, my weight is always been an issue. I have done weight watchers twice to loose the baby weight it worked but as I am about to be 40 that no longer works. Especially since I am only trying to loose a few pounds less than 10. However in less than 3 weeks doing the 16 hour fast I am noticing a huge difference. There has been a lot of science behind it and people who have disorders if they have a plan with their doctors can successfully to this.

Well this is kind of true, I had anorexia 15 years ago and have never had disordered eating since, but I never got over the mindset (feeling fat if I'm not at the very lowest number of my 'healthy' weight range for height, getting disgusted with myself for eating normally). But I've utilized intermittent fasting to healthy effect and found it can help reduce the obsession with food, another characteristic of EDs. You know when you're going to eat, you know when you aren't, so you aren't consumed by whether you should or shouldn't 'allow' yourself to intake calories at a given time in the day and get to focus on other things.

Love IF , i been doing it for the last 2 yrs or so, and its amazing. Initially i did it in combo with eating keto and i lost 35lbs in 3 months. Now I strictly do IF and eat as best as i can on top of weight lifting. I gained tons of muscle mass, i gained a few lbs of my fat back which is ok because i have so much more muscle now that its not as noticable. I still want to loose some more fat so i downloaded the app u have and want to try more prolonged fasting. Thanks for this vid, i hope more people get more educated in fasting, its a life changer!

I agree with your critique of the food industry but I would err on the side of caution in regards to the point about ancient peoples' diets. We need to remember we are biologically different from our ancestors with different gut flora and bacterial makeups. Plus our ancestors had different caloric and nutritional needs due to the environments, culture, and tools they had accessible. Also while we see examples of very old people in prehistory premature death and malnutrition was (and is) still common in indigenous tribes. The human body is extremely resilient and versatile and I think we can definitely take that knowledge from the way our ancestors lived, I just think it is a little dangerous to argue that ancient folks had healthier diets.
I'm not trying to nitpick and I think you gave so much good information. I love your channel and I love your work; you have been one of my biggest influences on youtube. Sending you all of my love.

I didn’t say it was healthier, but that the human body has evolved over thousands of years to survive for stretches of time with food scarcity without being adversely affected by it, if fat reserves are present.

I do believe we often have an unhealthy diet in the developed world though! Too many processed foods, too many pesticides used on produce, way too much sugar, and way too much obesity caused by overeating.

I have hypoglycemia and will get dizzy but after the first week my body adjusted easily. I stop eating at 6pm then I go to bed about 10pm. I get up about 6am with the kids and I do my cardio about 8am. By the time I finish my cardio and cool down its time to eat. Then I am good for the next 8 hours. I make sure I have a carb, fiber, and protein with every meal. This helps to regulate your blood sugar. You don't want to eat high sugary foods especially towards the end of the eating cycle. I try to eat the sweats in the middle of the day this way mu sugar doesn't spike. It takes 2 weeks to completely adjust. I am 19 days in and this is the first week that I am not starving late at night. Good luck, I am a foody and its been tough especially when my husband sits on the couch at 9pm with a big bowl of ice cream and I am fasting. My friends are already noticing the difference in my weight even though I have only lost 1lb. Its working. I dont feel deprived either.

Yes! Julia! I love this video. I started fasting back in Sept and have lost fat. I haven't done a 36 hour fast since November, but I do OMAD many days a week and sometimes just 2 meals.
I plan on doing an overnight fast soon as it's been a while. My clothes fit me better and I went down a size in my jeans.
We totally do not need to eat 3 meals a day. Fasting is SO healthy and good for us. There are people doing 3-5 days regularly and have friends who do 7-10 days all of the time. It's great!

Now i can't stuff myself 3 times a day and i feel really good. I once tried water fasting for 7 days and i learnt so much about my body and it gave me alot of confidence , i think everyone should try that once in their life.

Hi, Julia, I'm doing intermittent fasting for about 2 months. Usually I do the 16h fasting and it's working pretty good to me because I 'm the kind of person who hates so much counting calories!!! I started doing with my doctor's approval and I also do the low carb diet. At the beginning it was a little hard to just stop eating the snacks and the lots of carbs I was used to, but after 2 weeks I was addapted to it. Once or twice a week I allow myself do ear something I like, but with moderation and I don't have compulsive behavior about eating anymore, it just feels natural. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Kisses from Brazil! 😘

I was a bit iffy on trying intermittent fasting but your video inspired me to start! Did 20 hrs and just finished an 18hr one today! It really wasn't as hard as I thought! I'm borderline diabetic and have high bp and I've heard that it will help both those things significantly (with a low carb diet).

I started the 16/8h hour fasting the Sunday of New Years week. Its been 2 weeks. I have only lost 1lb but I have noticed that my back fat is going down and so is my tummy fat. I continue to run 3 miles 5 days a week and 45 min of weight training also 5 days a week. I have about the same energy, still sleeping the same, however I am no longer having the major cravings and eating less in my 8 hour time. I did make it 18.5 hours today but that was not on purpose it just happened with my schedule. I am just looking to drop 5lbs so I can fit into my clothes again comfortable. So far its working as far as my body is shifting the weight in my midsection. I just hope it continues.

i've been the biggest advocate for intermittent fasting since i started doing it about two years ago. i got some routine blood work done as part of my physical before christmas and my thyroid hormones are an absolute nightmare currently. now, it's hard to say exactly what the culprit is and it's absolutely possible i had a genetic predisposition and this could have just exacerbated it, but it has me reconsidering everything i've been doing. intermittent fasting has definitely been my biggest lifestyle change in the last two years so it's been hard for me not to immediately default to IF being the problem. i am 34 btw and i am assuming we are similar ages (+/- five years). btw i know eating and nutrition is very personal so do what you want; just make sure you're doing annual preventative maintenance with your physician.

    • @unprodigal87
      @unprodigal87 4 роки тому +1

I have Hashimotos Thyroditis, and i think we are not allowed to fast more than 12 hours, due to hormones disrupting! You can do around those hours theoretically, but no more than 12-14. That's what my doctors advised anyway. I agree with you that everyone should be doing regular blood tests!! I hope you regulate your hormones & go back to normal!! Best of luck David!

@@whutzat i find having debates with people over nutrition and fitness topics incredibly useless because everyone is generally entrenched in their particular beliefs. just make sure you're getting your hormones checked regularly, particularly if you're a user of starvation diets.

I have hashimotos, been doing 16 , 18, and 20 hour fast for 2 years. I do have a few non fasting days a month. My hashis has improved. However I can say that years ago (10 years) when my hashis battle started, I was not eating enough calories and exercising very hard. I also eased into IF, I did not just wake up one day and do it. It took 3 months to adjust. Dr Berg has great vids about it that really helped me.

Very interesting, this is something I´ve been doing without knowing it, I have one or two days (straight) every week, I can´t say that I have a good relationship with food, even tho I love eating, but I have periods that I just can´t eat, I don´t know if it´s due to my Autism/ADHD/Tourette or if it´s something else.
I was a binge eater before I got my diagnoses and before I started to workout, but then it changed, I use my fitness pal to help out with my intake, I make meal preps so I don´t have to think about how much I´m eating (really helpful for me) luckily I don´t like sweets and such, I prefer real food (and a good pizza every now and then)
I always have a meal replacement shake (105 cal) in the morning since I can´t eat breakfast and I have to have something since I´m taking a lot of meds, but, like I said, I always have (since I started working out and got my life back on track) a day or two that I just can´t eat during the day, I don´t even get hungry, and if I try to force something down, it´s like eating paper......
Hearing about this fasting method kinda calms me down a bit, I´ve been too scared to bring it up with my Doc of the fear of being forced fed, I know my body gets enough throughout the week, and I don´t have an eating disorder (at least I don´t think so)
I will read up on this method, but from what you´ve said in this video, maybe my body just wants it this way?
It never last more than two days, so, it can´t be that bad....my loved once always gives me an ear full those days and try to get me to eat, but now I might have something to refer them to so I won´t feel so ashamed everytime....
THANK YOU for sharing this! I will read about it, and I might even bring it up with my Doc next time :) 💜 this gives me hope!
(and I just want to add that I´m healthy otherwise, my bloodwork is good and all that, and my weight is on point)

I just had the stomach flu which made me legit not eat for 2 days (had like 15 crackers and one can of condensed soup in 48+ hours). While I don't recommend being sick as a way to do it, it did help me understand how much I actually needed to eat. I went safe today with real food and had unsweetened applesauce only. I was surprised how much I didn't need more than that.

On the weekends I can generally go 20 hours, but during the week around 13 to 18 depending. I have been doing it for years. It's just how I eat, but now I find just cutting out sugar helps a lot if I need to take off a few pounds fast. I use milk in my coffee and tea. I won't give that up. lol I've been the same weight forever. Christmas/Thanksgiving packs on a few pounds, too. I can't give up my nutroll and cookies. But right after holidays I can take it off quick by fasting and no sugar, chips, etc..anything greasy or sugary will blow it.

Yes! I do intermittent fasting, I've been doing it for over a year now. I've lost 10 kilos from doing it and the weight loss has been steady so I don't really have excessive skin either. I love intermittent fasting because its something I can and will do for the rest of my life. I started off with a 12 hour fast as before that, I was forcing myself to eat breakfast everyday even though I wasn't hungry. The need to have breakfast every morning is such a myth. Now I'm able to fast for around 15 hours without much issue, I can get to 16 hours easily if I have a busy day. Or else I will have a bulletproof tea to prolong my fast. For those starting off, I would recommend easing your way into it. I agree that calorie counting is so annoying and its not something you can easily do long term. I don't really watch my diet with intermittent fasting - I'm generally a healthy eater and drink plenty of water but I won't stop myself from having sweets every now and then. I'm glad that its working for you as well, Julia! I'm yet to do a 36 hour fast - maybe I'll try it sometime this year 😊

Sometimes I finish my last meal at 7pm and sometimes 8pm. But still I keep my fasting period 16hours. So my feeding time is depend on what time I start my fasting the day before.

I am practicing IF since last June. I usually do 16h fast. I am down 10 Kg, from around 65 kg to 55 kg in December. If you have no medical conditions(such as any hormone imbalance or iron deficiency or irregular period ) then IF is an exceptional way to reduce weight. Plus I feel like I enjoy the lifestyle. I keep my fast till 2pm. I break my fast with some protein and continue to eat till 7 or 8 pm. I can say it has life a bit more simple now that I don't have to worry about breakfast and what to eat till 2 pm. And also I do feel more energized and have more control of my actions.
But checking with you physician is recommended before doing this.

I thing that it was not only during the "cave man" times, but also very recently. The amount of food and the amount of food varieties we have now - we have it for...maybe last 50-100 years. I think that our grand parents did not have enough food all the time, especially if they were not rich. I did 12-16 hours intermittent fastong for many times without even realizing it. I have my dinner at 6 pm as last meal. I cannot sleep if I am full. And during weekends I sleep until 9-10 am and that is already 16 hourse without food.

You’re so right, it’s only in fairly recent times that we have started eating so much food! Our grandparents definitely ate much less...

Well I guess one could down an entire pizza within the allotted time.😛 Seriously, though, I think IF is very doable and customizable.

Yes I've been doing intermittent fasting for a couple years, doing 16 fast during the week and no restrictions on the weekend. It's helped me maintain my weight even when I stopped working out, like in the winter. I love it.

We were created to eat to live. Not live to eat. You’re so right. Constantly increasing our insulin by eating every 3-6 hours only causes issues. Inflammation and tiredness to name a couple. Thanks for this video!

A calorie deficit is all that is required for fat loss, not fasting. Eat less and move more = fat loss. 😀

Yes, and fasting puts you into that deficit usually naturally without having to count calories. I stated how that works in the video.

Not everyone knows what is required for fat loss. Some think just IF/keto/paleo, [insert diet here], is what caused the fat loss instead of the calorie deficit that one must be in. 🙂

Julia explained it well. Reducing meals and going longer periods of time without eating is a lot easier than trying to reduce calories and eating several times a day. It doesn't work for everyone.

Alrighty then, do what works for you. Good luck with your 36 hour fast! 👌🏻

Ah ok, I thought that was made clear by my explanation in the video. But another clarification can’t hurt! 😀

It blows my mind how popular fasting has become when for decades we Muslims were ridiculed for doing it and looked down upon for it. Other than Ramadan when we are obligated to fast, Muslims are encouraged (optional) to fast every Monday and Thursday. We do it because it is an act of obedience to God and God knows what is best for us. Yes there are many benefits to fasting, health-wise, emotionally, physically, socially, etc. We do it because God ordained it. So whether it is praised by scientists or society today, or whether they frown upon it in the future, we will always fast.
