That portrait at 7:33 really made me sit up and take notice. Just fantastic . . . .
Thanks! I prefer 6:50 :-)
Nice early look at this, Christopher. That’s a beastly sized lens, but that resolution performance at f/1.2 is impressive. I found the rendering from the 1.2/85 from them to be lovely. I’m in the process of reviewing the Sony/Zeiss Planar 1.4/50. It’s a pretty special lens
Thanks Dustin - I'm really enjoying testing this lens! God bless.
Sigma's Art line and Samyang's XP line kills just about everything for their price point and optical performance.
I noticed they used one of your shots in the sample photo release at the launch of this lens, amazing!
Man Samyang has been killing it! I almost didn't notice you changed images between the 1.2/2/2.8 on the 6D, when normally there is an enormous difference.
I sold my fuji 16,F2.8, 23,35 and 50 F2 and replaced them with the Samyang lenses 16mm F2, 21mm F1.4, 35mm 1.2 and the 50mm F1.2. Never looked back to the Fuji lenses.
That's some very impressive optics!
Very good review, Christopher - nicely contrasting the impressive performance of this lens with its ginormous bulk. It's even longer and heavier than the XP 85mm f/1.2 and dwarfs my 58mm f/1.2 MC Rokkor, with 1200g vs 475g | 117mm vs 60mm (length) | 93mm vs 68mm (width) | 86mm vs 55mm (filter). Perhaps Samyang are reserving some space for a future AF system ... not!
Nice review! Can't wait for Tamron 24-70 G2!
Thank you very much for the review! 😄
The only things missing is Autofocus😭😭 everything else about this lens is justt perfect!! When will an AF 50 1.2 come!?😔
we are all waiting for it mate!
Well, nothing can be completely perfect, right?
As much as AF would be sweet, MF is amazing. The 50mm, 85mm, and the 35mm 1.2 lenses are outstanding. I use these regularly. All 3 are crazy heavy though. The 35mm is heaviest, then the 50mm, and then the 85mm. Use these on a 5D3 and an MC-11 on my A72. Still crazy outstanding. Don't forget the 135mm f2. Much success and blessings!
You have a best lens review! 👍 Thanks.
Great review!!👌☺
please do a image quality test for samyang 50mm f/1.4 compared to XP
WOW awesome I saw your pics on Samyang's website and was wondering when this video would hit :D. A shame about the distortion. Still though makes me want a full frame.
Hey, great review! I hope you'll make a new one when 35 1,2 will be out.
What adapter did you use?
I've found that Metabones is working with these but it's pricey. Sigma adapter has some issues with aperture setting with 14 2,4 Samyang.
Thanks :]
Got to love a fast lens!
Beautiful glass. Hopefully you can review the new Tokina 50mm prime due for release.
MrCochise71 tokina is an AF lens
Thank you for your review ! I've watch several of your videos, especially the 50mm comparisons ones, because I need a new one quickly, I also read some blogs but I can't find anyone comparing this lens to the Sigma Art 50 1.4 EF. I'd like to know which one is the sharpest ? I'm used to work on portraits with a macro lens so sharpness is very important to me. Thank you very much ! :)
Several years ago, I bought a Rokinon 85mm f1.4 lens, a very low priced manual focus, manual aperture Prime at $238. When I tested it against my Canon EF 24-105 f4.0L, that cost 5 times more, I was rather surprised to find that the Rokinon was clearly superior in image quality: tack sharp from corner to corner on my Canon 6D, and with excellent bokeh and color rendition. Samyang makes amazing lenses, if you can get by without autofocus or image stabilization. Since I use my Rokinon exclusively off a tripod for landscapes, the lack of image stabilization isn't an issue, and by using 10X magnification in Live View mode on the LED screen, I can almost always acheive the most accurate focus possible. The only time this lens can be hard to focus is in night astro photography. Unless there is a bright planet in the sky, like Jupiter, Venus, or the moon, it can be difficult to get the sensor to pull in enough light in Live View mode to show anything on the LED screen. Most lenses that I have owned have focus mechanisms that go past infinity, so you can't shoot night sky scenes by just turning the focus ring all the way to the stop, and this Rokinon 85mm f1.4 is no exception: actual infinity focus requires turning the focus ring about 2~3° backward from the end-of-travel stop. Anyway, your review has convinced me that this lens is well worth the $659 price tag; it's twice as expensive (and twice as heavy) as the Meike 50mm f1.2, but has much sharper image quality and internal focus, too, so there will presumeably be less trouble with dust getting sucked into the lens over time, a serious problem with non-internal-focus cheap lenses that I've owned.
I bought this lens (the new red ring version) and the EF mount of the lens has quite a bit of play in it. The aperture is also acting very erratically on both my MC-11 adapter and the BMPCC6K. It’s almost unusable on the Blackmagic.
Very nice piece of glass i have hope in future for Nikon . Christopher very good wideo
Nice detailed information 👍
How would you rate this lens against Samyang/Rokinon 50/1.2 AS UMC CS version..
My goodness, Samyang really did it here; at F1.2! No autofocus motor inside so I guess there's more physical room for better glass. I also like how there's focus confirmation. It's MASSIVE though.. the thing indeed is for serious sessions.
I think the size and the weight are very good. Small and light. 50GM is around 800g and 50f14z is also around 800, as I know. This lens, I heard it's around 400 which is half. And the size of the lens is even smaller than 35GM
It is difficult to understand that the chromatic aberration never disappears when it stopped down, only because it changed from 20mp to 42m. I think the problem could be caused by a camera adapter.
Anyway, thank you for your detailed review.
Thx Chris
You can see corner sharpness in aps-c frame peaks at probably around f4-f8, but it's even better in the middle and f2 looks amazing on full frame. How much better is it than a sigma 50mm f1.4 art?
I bought one from Adorama for only 680 dollars, since it was a display model. I can't believe no one is talking about his lens.
An impressive lens. Given the heft of the lens, it appears to make the Sigma Art 50 1.4 , of modest weight and heft by comparison. Can others say how much you would believe autofocus wold add to size and weight. For a lens of this monster size, find it both very surprising and not at all appealing that it is not autofocus. Only use Leica and Voigtlander lens on Bessa Leica mount bodies and naturally , this is only for film. If the lens had AF, then may be of interest, potential use as am deciding whether to purchase Sigma Art 50 1.4 to team up with the Art 35 mm on my Canon 6D.
is there any plan for sigma 16mm 1.4 for a6300?...
The M3 actually has greater pixel density than the A7R II so I'm wondering what difference in the sensors caused purple fringing on the Sony when it isn't visible with the Canon.
I’m having trouble deciding between the milvus 85 or the Samyang 85&50. Then there is the new Sigma 105. Third party manufacturers have really stepped up their game.
Do I use this lens on canon m50 without adapter?
This is amazing performance on a 42mp camera wide open
If you can compare the new lenses 24-70. nikon, tomron g2, sigma art
The Samyang XP lenses seem very high quality almost as good as the Canon RF lenses with little purple fringing. Considering the Canon R5 & R6 new focus peeking for fast manual focusing, would you consider these lenses a bargain compared to Canon when it comes to image quality? Or would you be able to tell the difference? Thanks 😊
I picked up the lens yesterday (got an open box from Adorama for $630 tax incl.). I went straight to the park to take some photos and I can tell you it is SHARP and CONTRASTY. Also, Eye-AF and focus-peaking as well as the focus guide work flawlessly. The focus ring is taught, but very smooth so focusing is actually quite easy. I'm really looking forward to shooting with this lens this upcoming summer!
What adapter that u use for your sony?
Samyangs XP line is just insane. Wow!
Also: 35mm XP please.
I have a Rokinin f1.4 lens for mirrorless ..I'm not really impressed by Rokinon. Turns me off from buying this 1.2. But maybe I'll rent one to see if anything has changed
would you say the 85mm ist still sharper ?
Nice Review! Can you please take a look at the new Samyang 20mm f1.8 lens? This could potentially be an incredible fullframe wideangle lens!
Hopefully I will sometime soon!
I hope the color rendition is not green or yellow like the older models 😀
The problem with camera lens correction is that the camera applies profile of Canon lens, in this case the 50mm f/1.2 which will have different aberrations than the Samyang. We can see that on the distortion chart. Sigma announced lens corrections for Canon cameras for tnext week release and now I'm curious how they'll do it. You have to use Canon utility to load official Canon profiles to the camera over USB, it doesn't download it from the lens like micro4/3 ones do.
The Canon profiles don't correct distortion, so that won't be a problem
Oh right I forgot about that, it's even shown in the video, there's vignetting and chromatic aberration. But in newer cameras Canon added distortion too, like in my 80D.
Hi Christopher, where were you buy the lens?I did not find any where could buy yet.
Sikandina Via Samyang gave him this lens, so he didn't has to buy it.
Indeed, ridiculously big and heavy - and way too much distortion, especially on the corners - for a 50mm lens. But the sharpness and the contrast, even at F1.2 - are quite impressive!
Interesting lens. I wish they made an AF version. Wouldn't mind have a 1.2 for my A7RIII.
(Even though it'd be even larger)
The Emo Emu you could get any vintage 50, 55 or 57/8 mm 1.2 lens(of course without the perfectjon and bulk of the samyang) and use the techart af Adapter
man i feel forgetting how soft canon sensors are i was JUST about to call you out when you said its sharp in the middle and then i saw the sony pic .... gr8 review man .
I just don't get it. Why does Samyang's manual focus lens always better than the FE autofocus version?
Because a lot of the EF lenses have lens designs from the stone age (the EF50/1.4's design is 35 years old, for example), so naturally they can't keep up with modern bodies.
Mike Theobald I was referring to the lenses Samyang made for the Sony FE mount, not the Canon EF lenses.
@@shang-hsienyang1284 Because they are a cheaper lens on top of having AF. Money went into the auto focus electronics so less went into grinding the optics. If you want best of both worlds then you will have to go with Zeiss.
by my standard its bokeh are already Amazing, and you have seen better,so the best bokeh lens are? im curise
Samyang XP is the best lens on marked.. But its only manual focus.
Hi Christopher! I wanted to ask you about the Samyang 20 f1.8. I can't find a decent review anywhere! Given your interest in Samyang glass would you ever do a review on this? If not, can you please share your opinion with me on the lens if possible? Especially for astro work.. Thank you in advance!
Hopefully one day I will. I'm a bit busy right now...
Is it just me, or is it more than slightly reminiscent of a Zeiss Otus 55mm?
SHOOTING FROM CLOSE RANGE. I have a question. Which lenses are better ?
Samyang XP 50mm f/1.2
or
Canon EF 50mm f1.2L USM
General or personal choice, I don't mind. I hope any answers on this or Christopher Frost,
Thank you for any opinion in advance!
The Samyang lens should be considerably sharper.
Can someone tell me how i can activate the lens correction with a 6D like shown in 5:52? My 6D only shows "35mm" although I registrated the canon 50mm 1.2L USM with EOS Utility Software. Many thanks!
They're different lenses, so you can't use the profile, I'm afraid
Cristopher, may I ask you, why you don't analyze microcontrast of the lenses ? It is more important characteristic than a sharpness.
I believe in looking at resolution, and contrast - it's those two things that make sharpness a reality. If you believe that something else called 'microcontrast' exists out there, and you can give me an /exact definition/ of what it is and how to analyse it, I will look into it.
@Christopher Frost Photography: Thanks for your great - and early - review, Christopher. But I think you really downplay the heavy purple AND green fringing which is impossible to remove automatically in ACR, you have to do it by hand and even then you can't get completely rid of it. Try your images at 8:14, 7:44 and 7:48 - I did and was shocked. I've looked at all currently publicly available images from this lens, including yours in hires from flickr and I was really disappointed, especially as my XP 1.2/85 doesn't produce any fringing @1.2 at all!
Add to that a weight of 250g more than the XP 1.2/85 as well as 10mm more length and this is a Samyang I won't buy ( i wanted to, of course) - and I really love their lenses, I own 7 of them. Just for the record : the AF 1.4/50 doesn't nearly produce as much CA as this beast and the AF 1.4/35 none at all. Imho Samyang don't do themselves any favor by selling a lens like that in their XP lineup.
To be fair, I have to say the EF85/1.2L II is even worse - I returned it after 3 weeks because CA like that is inacceptable in a lens at that pricepoint.
Thanks for the comment. In fairness, I make a clear note of all those issues in the review.
Lucky you :)
😍😍😍
Impressive but I get the impression that Samyang has failed to quite hit the mark with their fairly expensive XP nor their AF series lenses. Love their manual focus 12 f2 which is stellar and cheap ! 😎😎😎
Does the lens work with the sigma mc-11 on Sony bodies?
No idea...it should do
Seems every lens is looking like Zeiss Milvus range now days
what very cheap adapter can i buy to use this lens with the Sony A7iii? I can get this lens for 450 dollars
I can't guarantee that a cheap adaptor will work properly with the aperture mechanism. The Commlite one might be a good start, though
Hey i just bought this lens. Do you also have this very strong magenta cast on your lens? I have sigma 50-100 and sigma goes more towards greens where samyang is strong on magenda
And also does your Samyang 50 mm 1.2 also have this a bit loud apature change?
I didn't notice any VERY strong colour cast
@@christopherfrost Can you check my google disk i put there a photo where i compare sigma 50-100 and samyang 50 mm xp 1.2 drive.google.com/file/d/19cW-oX0MjZ6Iu5C8t_g_EzkB2UNddQic/view?usp=sharing
Color rendition is the Achilles heel of Samyang lenses. They make great optics, but the greenish/yellowish tint is a bummer, especially for portraits.
Didn't notice that in any of my pictures with this lens.
What camera do you use?
Diostillrocks I used several Samyang lenses on Sony A7rII, Sony A7ii and the original A7
Yasser Sultan as far as i know Sony's cameras have "horrible" color science, with skin tones going yellow and green. Nothing you couldnt correct after though
Romo Malo I don't have any problem with color using Zeiss lenses. Sony and Voigtlander lenses are also good. Only samyang lenses render dull colors.
I still haven't seen anyone adapt these lenses for Sony mirrorless, and it disappoints me.
I love you bro
I want to See this with a good speedbooster on a fullframe Sony. The 35 and 85 1.4 nearly covered fullframe in a Video by nitsan simtov (or so)
Milan Tesic i know but you can do it anyways. Lenses With low vignetting often achieve this with an oversized image circle, Basically they are medium Format lenses sold for fullframe
Milan Tesic you can, in the same way AS crop lenses on fullframe sometimes work to an extend. Often for 5x7 crops. Always square
Joshua Mack: Exactly right. The Sigma 1.8/18~35 Art for example covers the complete FF sensor from around 24 to 35mm and the vignetting below 24mm isn't too bad, either. i tried it just for fun on my SONY a7II some time ago.
expensive but impressive
A pity there is no Nikon version....
It seems that the noticebly more CA in the Sony sample occurs due to the adapter you use to mount it on Sony.. Is it? Can you perhaps clarify that?
In addition, please note, on the M3 you said that the corners get as sharp as possible at f2 but when you move to f8 the corners were getting much sharper.
No - the CA is more noticeable because the Sony sensor is picking up so much more detail.
Why can't they make the AF lens this good with this 1.2. I dont get it. All they had to do was add AF to this lens for Sony but, instead, we get a 1.4 and they are not as good. I am tempted to get an EF version and just use my MC11. These lenses are soooo good.
The motors needed to move the large glass elements in an f/1.2 lens are probably a lot more expensive - that could be a factor
looks like a zeiss lens
Review request: please review the Samyang XP 35 F1.2. Thanks
It's a rare and very difficult to find lens
@@christopherfrost True. Specially on UA-cam.
There's only one review I could find, and that copy was defective in that video.
I'll still look forward to your review of that lens though.. whenever that happens. Thanks for the reply.
I own the 85mm 1.2 and am also really curious how the 35mm performs. Hopefully you get your hands on it Christopher.
There is more to image quality than sharpness and distortion. What about micro-contrast? I'm guessing that this lens has a high element count in order to achieve that corner sharpness wide open. However, lenses with a high number of elements generally have inferior micro contrast which can result in images, although sharp, looking flat and boring. It would be interesting to compare the image quality at f8 with that of a much smaller (and lighter) 50mm lens - e.g. the Canon STM EF 50mm f1.8. My guess is that sharpness would be roughly similar at f8 with the Canon lens having better colour saturation and micro contrast. Who really needs corner sharpness at f1.2 anyway as the corners would usually be out of focus.
You can see it in the video test shots.
I don't understand your point, except to muddy the review.
can you post your portfolio to show some examples of where micro contrast makes a big difference?
Micro contrast?
Gordon Hamilton F8 ? Are you kidding me ? Which idiot will by a 1.2 prime to use it at f8 ?
Great review - as usual I would say. Pretty interesting lens. But really heavy.
Have you ever tested the Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4? For me this 50mm lens is - at least- similar sharp but the bokeh as well as shooting against bright light seems to be even better, too. As motivation: check out my review on the Milvus: delightphoto.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/1/zeiss-milvus-50mm-f1-4-vs-canon-ef-50mm-f1-8-stm-10x-price-and-10x-better
I hear it's good :-)
I believe that all the photographers of the events are coolly waiting to compare Nikon's new Nikon 24-70 lenses and maneuvering, because I have no such lens and I want a professional to work with them. I believe that ten photographers like me expect you to check
I don't really understand what you're trying to say here...
Samyang needs to include auto focus in their lenses and that's it
Christopher Frost Photography auto focus*
I just love the size and weight of such a lens, too bad it doesn't have AF, otherwise it would be a no brainer along with their 85mm.
I wonder if the fringing is there on the 5dsr and isn't introduced by the glass in front of the sensor on the a7r2
Way more expensive than the Nikon 50mm 1.2 ai!
Yes. But a heck of a lot better
gift your 1 lens
Respected Christopher!
I recently bought this lens and tested it against a flat wall. The results were not quite what I expected, so I wanted to ask you if you had the same issues while testing your copy. I will leave a link here so that you can download them and see for yourself. Keep an eye out for the lower left corner (just near the edge) and the upper right corner (wider area). Thank you very much!

Why it's so fat? The front element seems to be significantly smaller, when i saw that i thought it might have AF.So, it's big, heavy, manual focus, it has distortion, i don't know about price but i think this lens is a fail.I would not buy it just because is sharp.People that will buy this will realize that after their wallet is lighter
You could say the same for Otus 55mm and be 10x times more truer
This lens maybe only get to the hands of hobbyist. It seriously need AF to get the attention from most enthusiast.
Bokeh not as good as the canon 1.2. I'll wait till it's on sale for half price to consider
