    It really is something to see a little manufacturer like Samyang crush the much bigger brands with this lens.

    The more I see of these lenses the more I like them. Beautiful portrait lens and at the risk of repeating myself I don't mind manual focusing. These are a real alternative to native glass for me. Thanks for a superb review Dustin and If you don't mind me saying so, you sneaked some STUNNING shots in there. Hope to catch more soon. Gary.

    Dustin, one quick note about DxO and chromatic aberration (CA): when CA is measured objectively, only lateral CA is discussed. The CA that you are referencing is of the longitudinal variety and is not accounted for in DxO's scoring.
    This is further confusing for many as lateral CA can be corrected by RAW converters automatically without loss of image quality (at least for lenses that are only lightly or moderately afflicted), and thus is largely a non-issue in real-world photography, while longitudinal CA will stand out and glaringly so on lenses that are so afflicted, which is nearly every fast lens short of Zeiss and Leica APOs, Canon's BR-infused 35/1.4L II, and Canikon super-telephoto lenses.

    I am using Fuji and starting to enjoy Samyang, with 12mm and 85mm i really pleased with what they produce.. and then i see this new 85mm with lot of improvement. I am hoping others small manufacture could compete with the big brands by focusing in IQ first just like Samyang did. Thank you for your good review.

    I got one myself and I really love it. This lens is amazing in every way! Fairly sharp for any portrait work and color rendering is really good. Of course you'll have to deal with manual focus which can be pretty challenging with such a small dof but when you nail it it's just amazing! I had to choose between it and the sigma but there was that little something in the Samyang that caught my heart. I shoot @f2. most of the time and I get beautiful bokeh and sharpness. Sometimes I push it a bit to f1.8/1.4 and it always deliver. Great lens!

      Captain Zouave I didn't even consider getting one to be honest and I'm not that impressed by the milvus series considering the high price point. I don't know if it's even worth it since the Samyang is so sharp and well built for under 1000 euros which is twice as less expensive! if I had to go Zeiss, I'd reach for the Otus line, very best in class, which is sadly out of my league (4000€).

      O woow! Two of my 3 favourite photo gear reviewers in same place :DD Hello :D Dustin!!! Hello Scott :D!! I feel so connected :D. Re: My love for Canon f1.2II - I bought this Samyang 85mm 1.2 to achive canon 85mm f1.2 look on photos buy i only shoot one photo shoot. Was extremely excited about such a shallow DOF. how great performer overall this is and how awesome lens I got, second hand! for 650 Doll only! Used it with FocusPeaking on Sony. Unfortunately very little of my shots where in focus at all! I was not sure if this was a complete lack of my skill with F.peaking.. or the fact that this was adapted via cheap "Beschoi" Lens Mount Adapter (EOS to EF) I would of though focusing with an assistance on 7iii is a fairly easy for a guy who operate modern electronic on a daily basis.. Yet i was very calm and tried to be very precise. Most of shoot are ruined... and with simple back lit shoots toward the window (no even direct sun light) ghosting and lost of contrast was TERRIBLE. I experienced similar lost of contrast once with Tamron 70-200 G2 when shooting in purely white hacienda on a beach close to equator. Yet again Tamron shoot i did was not directly to sun same like with Samyang. Just ambient reflected from white walls. All this make me wonder that some time tests for flaring & artefacts when shoot directed toward the sun might not be the same thing on different geographic location and during different year periods or even different hours during a day. My observation is that sometimes lens can handle pretty well direct light say in north of globe like Germany in winter. But will not perform as good when shooting in white room in Bali during the summer. Yesterday I was taking a street shoot in well lit up ally around 10:00am in London with 85mm GM with no lens hood! Contrast was very good but artefact!! You will not believe this!!! There is a flare of rainbow in 2/3 of the frame. I will post a link below. & and find 85mm GM a solid performer! Anyway. I sold Samyang and got 85GM. What ever i know about lenses and gear i know from you Dustin from you Scott. So thank you very much for all you very good reviews :D so glad i was able to reach out to you today :) Link for that weird! artefacts on 85mm GM. www.amazon.co.uk/clouddrive/share/x0enH6yr8bcJvjgLqKRqHSeG3cImPaqVUM93IJbzIM1

      @@Skandalista_fotograf Thank you for your enthusiasm! Dustin probably has more expertise than I do here, but flare is definitely a tricky one because of so many factors like you said. It's easy to test to a certain point, but light angle, intensity, direction, atmospheric issues and so on definitely can play a role. I've found even the best can definitely show flare in challenging conditions, so the tests are more of a rough guideline :)

    To complete my previous message, if I had to choose a 85mm lens, my choice would be the 85 f:1,8 Sony, much more lighter. Or the 85 f:1,4 Sony if I look for a little bit more bokey. They both are more able to shoot fast and precisely.

      much sharper then Canon. Much less CA. Better contrast. Bokhe i really did not compared side by side like Dustin here and he will know better but some how i love the Canon its smaller it feel better in my hand. It will give you very nice effect and it has autofocus!! MItakon is super soft, difficult to handle, lens hood is terrible not sharp at all & expensive. IMHO lens need to be a good over all performer. I had 105mm sigma f1.4 a master lens for portraits! but so unrealistically heavy and big i could not use it outside the studio. Id go for Canon or Samyang 85mm AF if you are on a budget. not sure what camera you use.

    Dustin you are definetly the best photographic gear reviewer on the internet. Have you ever considered testing the portrait lenses against each other on doing the same portrait on a person? For example, i think it would make much more sense for us to see sharpness in a real world use of the lens, compared to other 85's. I saw many people asking you how is that lens compared to other lenses, and i think those questions come from not seeing a real wide aperture comparison on a same person eye. Thank you, and keep up the outstanding work, i am looking forward for your videos.

    Thanks Dustin. Great in depth review. Think I'll stick to the Canon though. Really don't like the buzzsaw bokeh on the Samyang 85mm 1.2 lens when you stop down. Canon doesn't have that. And the corners aren't as sharp edged when you stop down more on the canon. Also the Canon has autofocus, which really can come in handy when shooting certain subjects. Used it wide open the other day at Venice Beach skate park, I was able to achieve shots that would not be possible with a manual lens, especially since I was using a Canon 1V. Were you able to see a difference in bokeh changing from 1.2 to 1.4? Only difference I've been seeing is vignetting and exposure . Thanks sir.

    Dustin, thanks for the review. I recently purchased this lens, and am also shooting on a 5D Mark IV. This is my first manual focus lens, and I'm struggling with focus. I love the look at 1.2, but have read that focusing through the viewfinder is tough, since the camera (apparently) can't show you accurate focus at 1.2 I think I've read that you're looking through the viewfinder at 1.8 or so. Is this true? I find that often when it looks in focus to me in camera it is out in lightroom. Any tips for how to improve this skill? You mentioned Live View a few times. Does this overcome that problem? Thanks!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 років тому +1

      Live View does overcome it. And yes, visual confirmation in the viewfinder with a standard focus screen will not give you reliable results. Try this: focus past your plane of focus with the shutter half pressed, then start to focus. As soon as you hear the focus confirmation beep, click the shutter. This gives pretty consistent results once you learn the technique.

      I think this lens may have the nicest overall rendering of any of them. It's slightly behind the Milvus, ART, and Tamron in sharpness, but ahead of the Canon. Milvus has the strongest contrast, Sigma has the best absolute sharpness, and the Tamron is maybe the best mix of features and versatility. We are blessed to have so many great options compared to a few years ago!!

      Dustin Abbott Thank you for this confirmation. I was about to get the Otus and was intrigued with the Milvus bokeh rendition and I actually prefer it compared to the Otus. It's also a lot cheaper. I shoot with a 6D and I don't think the sensor has the resolving power of the optics provided by the Otus. I could care less about auto focus on fine glass especially at 1.2 and 1.4. In reality, the Sigma makes sense because of its optics, overall performance on all apertures and auto focus. Now I can't wait for their 135/1.8 Art!!!!

      That's not a simple answer. Optically there is give and take for both. The Sigma is sharper, but the Samyang has better bokeh and is also extremely sharp. If you are using a traditional DSLR, you will probably get more consistent results with the Sigma. Manual focus is difficult with DSLRs, and it looks like (from your other comment), that you are using an 80D.

    Thanks a lot for another great and unbiased review, Dustin.
    Looking at 9:40 it seems that your copy of the Rokinon has the same aperture problem which plagued the first batch of the FE 50mm f/1.4 AF: the aperture blades are not completely symmetrical. This focus ball shape @9:40 is definitely not normal @ƒ/1.8! Even the product picture of the 1.4/50 on amazon still shows that problem of the first batch of the FE 50 AF: www.amazon.de/SAMYANG-Autofokus-Objektiv-Anschluss-Mount-schwarz/dp/B01I7FI556 (5th picture)
    Could you do me a favor please and look at the lens from the front with the aperture closed down to ƒ/11 or ƒ/16? If you see something like the picture I mentioned above, this is the reason for that strange focus ball shape @9:40 above - especially on the bottom right. In the 50mm it lead to all kinds of problems, e.g. hunting as well as higher CA and flare if stopped down. Pete McWade was the first to notice this problem way back when: ua-cam.com/video/RMkpAqNp_RI/v-deo.htmlm20s
    I thought Samyang had overcome that manufacturing problem and didn't expect it to show up in their premium line :-(
    Of course Samyang will exchange the copy for a new one without any problems for people who encounter this phenomenon, but if review copies go out with it, the reviews don't look to flattering for Samyang if the reviewer isn't aware of that fact.
    Unfortunately my Samy XP 1.2/85 still hasn't arrived :-(

    • @mike_MKvipPhoto
      @mike_MKvipPhoto 7 років тому +2

      My Samy has finally arrived last Friday and I already love it.
      I had the French dealer check the aperture before sending it and I received a perfect copy with absolutely symmetrical blades: my bokeh balls are perfectly round until f/2, no 'buzzsaw' here:
      drive.google.com/open?id=0ByWsPMNI_F1fakw3Y2lMY0pIVXc
      And for all the commenters here who don't consider it sharp enough wide open here's a portrait shot at ƒ/1.2:
      flic.kr/p/R9P1v8
      and here is one at ƒ/2:
      flic.kr/p/Rah3VA
      Not really much difference - for me it's plenty sharp :-)
      And I agree with you, Dustin: the renderin is plain awesome and has much more character than the other ƒ/1.4 offerings and the EF85mm ƒ/1.2L II (which I owned).
      As far as manual focusing is concerned: it's a breeze with focus peeking on my Sony a6300. For portraits all you need is the red dot in the eye and focus will be perfect.
      For me it's well worth the price - especially considering what the Milvus, Otus and Canon cost...
      I guess my Samy 2/135 is not my prefered portrait lens anymore ;-)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 років тому

      I suspect you'll find the 85mm focal length more flexible for portrait work - I certainly do, though I do love a 135 in certain situations.

    • @kalali462
      @kalali462 5 років тому

      In June 2018, I used this Rokinon SP 85mm f/1.2, at its maximum aperture only, on an EOS 6D with the matte focusing screen, Eg-S, in an outdoor, environmental portrait shoot at a busy, New York City intersection. It was unsettling, no time for Live View mode, to use only the viewfinder and await post- to reveal which shots, if any, were focused just right.
      My computer monitor showed that, of the few dozen taken with this lens, most were focused right, except the tightest shots, a headshot framing. Of these, some half were acceptable-still none precisely, exactly right. Yet a couple of them were focused so nearly ideally to suit even professional work, since the sliver of a focal plane, and the otherworldly bokeh, dreamlike, make these photos timeless-portraits the model could hang on her wall and pass to heirs.
      Although I sold the lens before buying the a7R II and then the a7R III, my experience with these bodies suggests efficient and reliable-and, for me, even gratifying and pleasant-focusing with this Rokinon on another, such portrait shoot. And if the focus confirmation works on the Sony bodies-or on Canon's fullframe mirrorless bodies-the confirmation ought to be even more accurate than on a DSLR. Meanwhile, I'm confident that in a studio, the focusing would be a breeze.

    Tamron 85mm 1.8 $749 however is a radically different lens quality all metal construction weather sealing plus it has the addition of the stabilizer the vibration compensation and so an optically it destroys the Canon to Nikon shooters and Rokinon. Rokinon 85 SP 1.2 at 1.2 is too soft it has to be stop down to 2.8 to be sharp, what the point. It's really really important to me that I get the right shot because of those moments you will never get again.
