To be honest I’m not too disappointed when „cheaper“ lenses don’t have autofocus. To me it’s better when the manufacturer mainly focuses on the image quality and the build quality. It requires a certain budget that allows the manufacturer to implement a good and reliable autofocus. So a certain amount of your limited budget is spent on an autofocus system that probably isn’t fun to work with and will lead to unusable footage. And since professional filmmaking is all about manual focus, this should be no big deal anyway
Agreed - no AF is better than bad AF! Nothing is more annoying than extremely slow AF or AF that searches for decades so you miss the shot.
@@lolly166541 No kidding, I had the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 for Sony and that thing was a nightmare. My other Samyang lenses are great, the 35mm f/1.8 nails focus on the eye wide open for like 80-90% of shots. But that damn 14mm would get maybe 1/5 shots in focus and couldn't track a walking speed subject.

Meike has really stepped up their game in the last few years! I wasn't expecting the Sony to be that good, tho, I thought it would still show some CA and softness wide open

Really an unfair comparison really. I'm not surprised that an un adapted less than a year old pro lens was better than an almost 20 year old lens and a 300 dollar one that both were adapted. I'm not really sure what was the whole point...

@@mastaw of course it's obvious and that's why I don't understand the point. Especially when you give the Sony the unfair advantage and go on for two minutes exclaiming how much better Sony was... If this was a budget friendly, nearly same quality cheaper price sort of video, it turned out aweful. To me it sounded kinda biased not chosing a more suitable lens ( which there are plenty). My point to the original comment was to point out the disparity between the three options. He said he wasn't expecting the Sony to be that good. Well when you compare it to cheap and outdated equipment, really? What were you expecting?
I actually kinda dig the flaring on the Meike! It’s a stylistic thing and not perfect in all circumstances, but a cool look nonetheless

I've had a Canon 50mm f/1.2L for over a decade now and it's always been my absolute favorite lens for all its dreamy qualities. Switched to Sony a few years ago (A7III, A7SIII, FX3 but still use all my EF glass from time to time) and just recently picked up the 50mm f/1.2 GM. All I have to say is that it's the best 50mm I've ever used without a doubt. Incredible autofocus wide open, even with fast moving subjects (I film automotive racing for a living). Pretty much zero chromatic aberration, which is shocking after using the Canon version for so many years. It's a brilliant lens and I was hesitant at the price for a while, but the first time I used it I very much understood that it's worth it. That being said, I'm pretty impressed with how well the Meike held up against two legendary lenses. Definitely seems like a great buy for anyone on a budget!

This has NO affect on the effect of your movie/video (or MINIMAL).
Because it's the story and content that matters, not the F'in equipment (esp. those grossly HIGH-PRICED ones!)
Yeah the only time I've ever seen reviews comment on something the lens did in a movie were with the anamorphic flaring in some sci-fi films or if the bokeh is obnoxiously shallow like in "Army of the Dead". For virtually everyone else, you could shoot your videos on cheap or expensive lenses and nobody except cinematographers would care.
Assuming you at least can cover the range of focal lengths you want and can pull focus, you'll typically get more mileage out of upgrading your lighting, color grade, story, acting, production value, and even your camera body than by buying super expensive lenses.
For stills, if you want to make really big prints, I think high quality lenses are worthwhile though. If I'm going to hang a print in my house, I want to be able to pixel peep and still have detail.

I'd be super interested to see how the new Canon 50mm RF does. Hopefully the CA has been improved. Surprised at just how bad the Canon EF is in these tests
RF50L is far better than the old EF50L

For filmmaking the meike seems to do the job much better than the others. Mechanical manual focus, lens flares, softer bokeh, less sharp.
Expected more to see it against cine glass instead of photo lenses.
I'm not a photographer or videographer but I have a daughter that is. I like to learn about this stuff. I have learned a lot about lenses and actually how things are supposed to work. I learned about the F settings today. I kinda get it now.
I have the cheapest one, and it's absolutely great with a black Pro Mist filter and an anamorphic streak filter, it's not a super clean look but it's very stylized and I love it

I plan on getting a Meike prime lens, starting off with the 25mm, 2.2 stop. And I honesty think these comparisons presents the pros and cons obviously but shows how solid cheaper options are yet admire the quality of expensive options. Amazing video as always Gene!
Gosh this potato channel....I remember when i started out two years ago and was trying to figure out which gear to get for my UA-cam channel.
Almost every search I did had a Potato Jet video in the results. So I watched one video, then two, then ten etc...eventually i just decided to get an iPhone X, lav mic, tripod and a small cheap light off AliExpress..
This Potato Jet channel taught me so many tricks, do's, dont's, how to setup. I cant imagine how much more time i would have wasted trying to figure things out if I didn't find this channel. Ever since then I've been watching your video "almost" all the time if and when i come across any.
Fast forward two years, the channel I started did so well that i decided to start this one to teach the tricks/lessons I picked up.

I have to say tho I actually prefer the look the Meike gives. It's very soft and vintage feeling which I love. The characteristics it has makes it a great lens for more stylized looks.
I actually have some vintage lense that I pair with a couple of meike cinelenses for m4/3 and they match together very well. And I can ensure you that Maike are build like tanks, a month ago I drop one of them into the oak wood floor of my hause and it made a big and deep mark on it but nothing happened to the lens, it stills works fine without any scratch.
I’m a Sony shooter and immediately leaned towards cam B as the Sony. They have a look thats kind of darker and flatter. Canons always seem brighter for some reason idk. I feel like canon looks better on cam but Sony comes alive in post. But that’s just my opinion. Also that sponsor segment was actual genius making us watch the whole thing to get the comparison. Well freaking done

Curious how much of the Sony's performance is 'fixed' by the camera body as far as the aberrations go.
The g-master looks great on Red as well. Speaking from experience.
I just upgraded to the 50mm f1.2GM from the Zeiss 55mm f1.8. The Zeiss 55mm is an incredible lens, but I'm tired of having to edit chromatic aberration. the 50GM is SO clean 🧼
Sony really have come from nowhere and nailed the Mirrorless lens market. Really untouchable in my opinion!

Untouchable? The Canon RF lenses are generally superior or tied to Sony's equivalents, although it depends on the specific lenses. But with Canon you have options that are not available to Sony at all. There's obvious diminishing return and it's not like that should make you buy Canon over Sony, but saying untouchable is quite a reach.
Sony have come from nowhere? seriously?? sony has been producing digitals cameras since 1996, most of Nikon's cameras are using Sony's sensors. In 2006 Sony has bought Konica Minolta (company with a hundred years of history) with all their beautiful lenses and technologies and this is how they get theirs Alpha line and then has presented it's first mirrorless camera in 2010. So no, they defenitely didn't came from nowhere, it was the long way of evolution.
If sharpness is all you care about.
I have a couple of the Meike Cine Super 35 lenses. Really happy with what you get for the price, focus breathing, aberration, vignetting, all very controlled.
The 50mm f1.2 GM has amazing AF for video with the A7S3 and we always pack it in the camera case but we recently found ourselves really enjoying the new 35mm f1.4 GM. These new Sony G Masters are worth the money. Thanks for always giving us entertaining and informative content.
I actually returned the 35gm because idk if it was my copy or what but my focus breathing was TERRIBLE
@@Marlon-1224 the 35 GM is amazing for stills. Focus breathing is definitely an issue for some video applications and scenarios.

Were you using a Sony camera on all the lens tests? in-camera post-processing on the Sony lens perhaps? I have noticed that my Canon lenses don't look as good on my Sony camera and I think that might be the reason. Maybe every camera does some in-camera processing on their own line of lenses.
2:45 Knew the Meike lens would be the softer one. In the photography world it's actually frustrating to pick up a budget lens just to find out you can't use it fully open because the whole picture is kind of too soft. Such lenses often sharpen up at around f/2.8, hence they aren't completely worthless. Only way to go faster on a budget imo is to get a good deal on a used (maybe vintage) lens.

I am also really curious how the Canon Rf 50mm f1.2 would have done in this comparison. I am thinking probably as good as or better than the Sony lens. The EF version came out like 15 years ago so I am really not surprised that it did the worst in some of these tests.

Completely agree. I own the 50 and 85 1.2 RF and there’s no such CA. It’s definitely on par with the Sony, but I love the warmth of that canon lens

I've shot Canon for almost 20 years now and I never liked ANY of the Canon 50mm lenses. When the Sigma Art 50mm came out, it changed everything and that lens was attached to one of my cameras all the time. Now that I've switched to RF mount, I naturally had to pick up an RF 50L...and boy oh boy has this lens been a true delight to use. My obsession for 50mm has only grown thanks to this lens.
Tbh, you really should have tested the RF 1.2. the EF was released in 2006 and the Sony was released last year. Still a good video though and get the idea across.

I'm not a 50mm fan because I prefer 35 for wide and 85 for portraits. But I did try out the rf 50 (borrowed) and that beast is crazy good. Enough to make me think. The rf glass is just so so so amazing. No wonder they're all crazy expensive.
Yeah, I stopped watching the moment I realized you're using the old Canon 50mm. Everyone knows that lens was problematic for sharpness, and also that the new RF 50 mm F 1.2 is clearly superior. Gotta make it fair fight man
I think that its there for a middle ground item. If they had the RF mount one then it wouldn’t be much of a 3 way fight, it would just be a demolition by the 2k+ lenses
I think the main problem is the title. The Canon should be considered a middle ground (an outdated one though, I don't think it's the right lens for this comparison either way). But the title makes it sound that he's going to compare the best lens from Canon by mentioning the "L", while, although it's technically correct and it's mentioned during the video that it's not their best and most updated lens, it comes out as just as a poor value middle ground. But again, there's not really much more "middle ground" if you want f1.2. You want an autofocus 1.2 even with a poor value optically wise but can't reach $2000? There's not really other options, but I think that at least it should've been consirered more at second hand pricing. That value is much more reasonable. Or honestly, if you want a middle ground, sacrifice 1.2 for 1.4, as mentioned on the video. 1.2 is not worth that many compromises IMO.
It’s just now when you do the comparisons between lenses or cameras with Dylan being inside of it, I’m focusing more on his marketing ability that gets better everytime😂

I use the Meike 35 in PL mount (s35) and its shockingly good. Had Veydra before and the Meike kills it.

The chromatic aberration on the Canon looks so good
The dynamic range in the shadows looked a lot better in Canon I thought but I could just be imagining (compared to the cheaper lens)
The meike did much better than I think anyone was expecting, the only thing that’s a real flaw about it is the chromatic aberration but for the price it’s great for UA-cam stuff or no budget music videos

Typically, the big difference is build quality, lens coating (flare suppression), contrast, chromatic aberration, and other lens features (IS, AF, etc). Good video.

You can immediately tell which one is the Sony by the well controlled cat’s eye. It really only shows Cat’s eye at the very edges at 1.2 and by 1.6 the cats eye is virtual gone.
30 seconds in, middle one looks best, only second to Dylan against that windows XP desktop background.
Would've really been interesting to see how the new canon RF 50mm f 1.2 performs, as the new Lenses from Canon seem to pretty much all be realllly good.
My favourite 50mm for a long time was the old 1.4 Sigma Art on the D750 but now it’s the 50mm 1.2 G Master on the A9II.

Meike actually just released some pretty nice cheap cinema lenses which could make for a cool comparison video. I bought a 35 t2.1 lens for $999 and I love it!
